The check engine light should illuminate for a few seconds with the key on and the engine off. If it doesn't the bulb is out. The check light will only stay on if the engine is running and the and there are diagnostic codes in memory or there is a current fault. If for instance, the engine cranks but won't start because the fuel pump has failed you will not get a check engine light because the fuel pump is not monitored by the ecm.

Is the check light not suppose to show on the dashboard when the ignition is turned on.
