Two people were confirmed dead while a nursing mother and her baby were seriously injured during a fire incident which razed a building on Sunday in Ekpene Ukim, Uruan Local Government Area. The fire which reportedly started at about 1am on that faithful day and lasted for hours, destroyed properties worth millions of Naira. “We woke up at about 1am when we heard a voice shouting fireooo, fireooo, fireooo…, and immediately, we noticed the flame of fire in the compound. when we got there, the fire had already taken over the entire building. Effort to quench it proved abortive as the fire has already surrounded the building,” an eyewitness said. The two victims who lost their lives during the incident were tenants in the compound and were from Ikot Akpanike in Nsit Atai Local Government Area. Further reports also revealed that the nursing mother and the baby who narrowly escaped death were the wife and child of one of the deceased. A source said that the owner of the house, whom he identified as Enoch Umoh, died about two weeks before the incident took place. Award-winning Nigerian singer, 2face Idibia, has championed the cause to protest against the Federal Government. Many Nigerians have joined him in the nationwide protest that will hold February 6, 2017 in Lagos and Abuja. But, since the artiste made the announcement, there have been several efforts by the FG to frustrate the protest in one way or the other. The first was when the Special Assistant on Media to the President, Femi Adeshina said that the protest is as a result of those that are aggrieved they lost the elections to President Buhari in 2015. As if this was not enough, Lauretta Onochie, also an aide on Social Media to the President confronted 2Face to go on live TV to give reasons for his protest and action. Also, on Wednesday, the Lagos State Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni said he will not allow the planned protest against the Federal Government slated for February 5 to hold in the state. Owoseni said: “Information reaching us revealed that some hoodlums are planning to hijack the peaceful protest. And as such, we won’t allow it to hold in Lagos. We know that Tuface do not have the capacity to contain such a crowd and we will not fold our hands and watch while things go out of hand.” But, really, why is the FG trying to frustrate the protest. Nigerian Bulletin compiles some of the reasons why this is so: 1. FG Believes 2Face Belongs To The Opposition: The Federal Government seem to believe that the artiste pitches tent with the opposition party – especially as it was in the news few days ago that Senator Akpabio, a PDP lawmaker is a sponsored party to the protest. The Senator however denied those claims. Well, this could be one of the fears of the government. 2. To Cover up the rot of the government: The Federal government wants to frustrate the protest as a measure to cover up for their excesses, and since the demonstration is to protest everything that is wrong in the government since inception. 3. This present government seem not convenient with confrontation: Have you not noticed yet? That the APC-led Federal Government seems not convenient with confrontation? Several attempts by labour unions, groups to protest wrong workings of the government have been silenced or quickly settled. Except for social media protest, no demonstration has been against the Buhari-led Federal Government since inception. 4. Activists bigger than 2Face May take up the protest: The federal government is fearful that renowned activists with higher status than 2face may take over the protest and it would be a messy situation for the FG. Already, renowned artistes have declared their support for the 'African Queen' crooner, and also a civic organisation; Enough is Enough Nigeria 5. The greater side of the populace is on 2face' side: Since 2face announced the protest, it has been the trending topic on social media with the hasttag: #iStandWith2Face #iStandWith2Baba #WeWillProtest #iStandWithNigeria. The larger chunk of the populace is on the side of the artiste and the massive movement is what the FG is afraid of. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/02/why-presidency-wants-to-frustrate-2face.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

David Agama Esse of Cultural Center was gruesomely killed in cold blood at his service apartment here in Calabar inside Cultural Center Complex. Instead of the government to fight this crime, they all they did was to send a foolish emissary to go on social media, and post false information, (as revealed by the blogger) , claiming to have "arrested three suspects who killed the chief security of cultural center " all in the bid to exalt themselves against the truth that was published by the young Democratic party (YDP). Well I leave all to God but the beast in me has just been released. It is even more painful that I have been mourning and expecting moral or otherwise support from the government to the state CID on the lead there may have to carry out their investigations in an attempt to bring the perpetrators to book. Instead, the CRS government is more interested in self glory under false stories. It is well. Who no get man to fight for am, get God. To God I pledge my dependence on this matter. Renowned Afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti, has urged celebrities and their fans to work with the government to help millions of people struggling to survive in Boko Haram-hit northeast Nigeria. The Lagos-based Afrobeat star said he wanted to raise awareness among young Nigerians and encourage them to demand a greater humanitarian response, having visited Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Monday. “People need to have a sense of the reality in the northeast – from people walking around hungry to mothers with malnourished children,” Kuti said, during his visit. “I hope more celebrities will visit and engage with their fans,” Kuti told the Thomson Reuters Foundation after accompanying the International Rescue Committee (IRC) on visits to local communities hosting the displaced and a health clinic. “Then, more people will see what is going on, share it on social media, and put pressure on the government to do more.”Boko Haram’s insurgency has killed about 15,000 people and forced more than two million to flee their homes since 2009. The Nigerian army, backed up by neighbours, has retaken most areas held by the Islamist militants. Yet the jihadist group has stepped up attacks and suicide bombings in the past few weeks as the end of the rainy season facilitates movements in the bush. While calling on more support and aid for people in the northeast, Kuti said he was struck by the generosity of local communities towards those uprooted by the insurgency. “It is heartening to see so many displaced people welcomed into the homes of local families … and community elders offering to give up land to displaced for farming,” Kuti said. In Maiduguri, which has seen its population almost triple to five million in recent years, there are signs a sense of normality is gradually returning to the city. The curfew has been pushed back to 10p.m. from 6p.m. and clubs are packed and pulsating as DJs play the tunes of artists like Kuti and his late father Fela, the 1970s Afrobeat pioneer. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/01/photo-femi-kuti-visits-idp-camp-in.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44

Rangers International FC, Enugu has revealed that it will start rolling out its branded bread called “Rangers Bread’’ and other flour confectionery products in Enugu metropolis. Rangers’ Marketing Manager, Ignatius Okafor, made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu. Okafor said that the move was meant to shoring-up the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the club to prosecute a successful 2016/2017 football season. He noted that the branded bread and other confectioneries from the club would be sold at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu during matches as snacks to spectators. “The nutritious Rangers bread and other confectioneries will also be sold daily to the teeming fans of Rangers residing within Enugu metropolis and its outskirt for a start. “And we will be glad to extend our supplies to other areas or states where our fans want them to come to. “I believe that apart from getting IGR, the initiative will go a long way in making Rangers a household name and brand in most families, neighbourhoods and communities within and outside Enugu State,’’ he said. He noted that the club would not rely solely on the state government but has decided to go into partnerships and businesses that would generate funds. Okafor, however, noted that the club needed more funds as it would be going for continental derbies as well as defending its 2015/2016 Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) trophy and Federation Cup in the current season. NAN recalls that Rangers will be visiting JS Saoura of Algeria on Feb. 10 for its first leg of the CAF Champions League. It will host the Algerian club on Feb. 17 in Enugu for the second leg. The Cathedral -Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu – has a seating capacity of 22,000 spectators. The stadium is expected to be filled to the brim during Rangers’ continental ties as it is normally seen during important national football derbies. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/01/enugu-rangers-to-produce-rangers-bread.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

Weeks after controversial pyramid scheme MMM Nigeria gave way, placing the financial life of thousands of people in chaos, a similar programme has emerged, calling itself "MMM Naija." Promising a return of 50% of staked funds for participants, MMM Naija doesn't appear to be founded by Sergey Mavrodi, the convicted Russian fraudster who created MMM Nigeria and a host of others. A message on the homepage of MMM Naija describes the programme as, ...the only thing that can break the financial chains, release us from continuous slavery, and save us all. The Fed will be expunged from power, and they will no longer be able to cultivate social inequality. The banks as we know them will simply disappear. Good luck to people who are still going to lose their money to this one. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/01/mmm-naija-surfaces-after-crash-of-mmm.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), is set to commence of sale of the 2017/2018 admission forms for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE). This agreement was reached at the national headquarters of the Board in Abuja on Tuesday, January 24, after a meeting with National Examination Council (NECO), West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Business and Technical Examination (NABTEB) to harmonize the timetable. Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the head of media and information, in a statement said that the harmonized examination timetable, will solve problems arising from overlapping of examination dates, which has disenfranchised a lot of candidates. “The bodies agreed that for the purpose of the 2017 UTME, JAMB will shift its examinations to allow students face WAEC, NECO and NABTEB,” he said. In another development, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, the registrar and chief executive of JAMB, has said that candidates, who wish to sit for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, will take the examination under the surveillance of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras. The registrar while speaking during a briefing in Abuja said the measure was necessary and that it is aimed at preventing examination malpractice during the UTME. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/01/jamb-to-begin-sale-of-2017-utme-forms.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom state has threatened to sue Senator Nelson Effiong for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Effiong, who represents the Akwa Ibom South District, dumped the opposition party during the Senate plenary session on Thursday, January 19. The Akwa Ibom PDP made the comments via a statement released by spokesman, Ini Ememobong. The statement reads: “The People’s Democratic Party Akwa Ibom State has received with mixed feelings the announcement of the defection of Senator Nelson Effiong, who was elected on the platform of our great Party to represent the people of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District.” “The Senator who had been in the eye of the storm recently for his below par performance in and out of the Senate, cited the division at the National Level of the party as his reason for defecting adding that “any politician worth his salt will not stay back in a Party that is sinking like the PDP.” “The State Chairman of the Party, Obong Paul Ekpo has directed the Legal department of our Party to commence the process of recovering the mandate freely given to Nelson Effiong and manifestly mismanaged and corrupted by him. “We however note that his actions and statements are indicative of a drowning man, who in his speedy descent into an abyss, holds on to any straw within sight and seeks to take with him anything willing to follow. “The People’s Democratic Party is not and cannot be a sinking party, even Nelson Effiong recognized so during the last enlarged stakeholders meeting of the Party held in December 2016, where he spoke glowingly about the party. “We urge our party faithful , especially those from Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, to remain calm and continue to support the party, knowing that we will do everything within the ambit of the law to reclaim the Party’s mandate. “We agree with Abraham Lincoln’s postulation that “nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character give him power”. As a party, we gave Nelson Effiong the power to speak for his people, but his character showed up and now the whole world can judge him. “We must continue to hold fast to our strength and convictions conscious that “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”-Martin Luther King jnr. We are certain that this season of political trial will soon pass.” Effiong had said, in a letter sent to Senate President, Bukola Saraki, that the PDP is a sinking party he doesn’t want to be associated with any longer. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/01/pdp-to-sue-senator-for-defecting-to-apc.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

The Lagos State Government has said that there is no one cap fits all model for the implementation of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) initiative of a-meal a-day Home Grown School Feeding Programme, adding that there was the need to domesticate the implementation and act locally. Speaking at a workshop to determine how best the FGN a-meal a-day school feeding programme can be implemented, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, who was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Adesina Odeyemi, stated that the present administration will take cognizance of the staple foods of the locality, nutritional value of meals, logistics, mode of selection of vendors, orientation, tradition and culture of the people amongst others in its implementation of the scheme. According to her, “Every Nigerian child deserves the same healthy start as children born in Asia, America and Europe and should have a healthy start in life and a fairer opportunity to fulfill their potential for themselves, their families, and the nation.” While stressing that the School Feeding Program is a veritable way of raising our literacy level, Adebule maintained that the introduction of the scheme is expected to create new jobs, increase food production by up to 530,000 metric tons per annum, as well as attract fresh investments up to N980bn. She explained that improvement in our food growth for self-sufficiency and food security will receive a boost as there will be ready market for their products, noting that the current collaboration between Lagos and Kebbi on rice production is a testimony. Adebule, however condemned the postulation that the country’s population is too huge for the successful implementation of this program, saying that countries with bigger populations than Nigeria have successfully implemented similar policies. The Deputy Governor reiterated that the success of policies and programs depends largely on the cooperation, commitment and dedication of the workforce, the human personnel that would translate the concept and dream of policy formulators into reality. She therefore, enjoined stakeholders in the education sector to painstakingly look at the program holistically to ensure that all issues are addressed to ensure a hitch-free implementation. Earlier, the National Programme Manager, Home Grown School Feeding, Mrs. Abimbola Adesanmi, coordinator of the programme at the National level, said the overall objective of the programme is to improve Children’s nutrition and education, fight food insecurity and disease and also link local small-scale producers to markets (Schools Agriculture production and development). She disclosed that the vision of the federal government is to see a sustainable school feeding programme that will establish a safety net for the poor and eradicate malnutrition in school-age children while stimulating the national economy. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/01/lagos-set-to-domesticate-school-feeding.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, CACOL (formerly Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders) has condemned arrest of Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, yesterday by police. The Executive Chairman of CACOL, Debo Adeniran, in a statement, described role and attitude of the police as inappropriate and unacceptable. Adeniran said, “This development is reminiscent of the dark days of the Military rule when journalists were hounded, intimidated, tortured, harassed, detained and assassinated on regular basis. It is unfortunate that the Police are still living in that age and time, when arbitrary arrests and detentions were the order of the day. And this is in spite of our country being in a democracy.” “Let us assume without conceding that Sowore is guilty of the trumped-up charges of defamation, blackmail and threat to life; and if the Police had a petition on the matter, we should ask the Police if previously they had invited the journalist for interrogations. If they did, what was Sowore’s response, that is, did he honour the invitation? If he didn’t, what did the Police do? Where should it be the petitioner that had to carry-out the arrest on behalf of the Police?” Adeniran alleged that the so-called petitioner was linked to laundering money for Femi Fani-Kayode in infamous arms deal scandal perpetrated under last regime when money meant for arms were diverted for political campaigns, saying that the motive of this occurrence was not far-fetched. He said: “There were two obvious evil machinations in this illegal arrest of Sowore; first is the connivance of the Police in the episode and secondly, but more fundamentally, corruption fighting back voraciously. We all know the impressive role SaharaReporters has been playing in terms of exposing the corrupt elements in and out of government in Nigeria in particular and Africa generally. Sowore is actually a ‘thorn in the flesh’ of oppressors and the kleptomaniacs in our country which is why he is now been hounded. Nigerians must realize this; we must be vigilant as we can all see from this incidence that corrupt elements will go to any level including violence just to kill the anti-corruption mode the country is already in.” “We demand an immediate halt to the harassment of Sowore, he must not be detained under this circumstance or any other one unjustly. He must be allowed to enjoy his freedom of expression, movement and all the other fundamental human rights to the fullest.” http://www.metronaija.com/2017/01/cacol-condemns-sahara-reporter.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church (RCCG) of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye’s recent announcement that he is stepping down as the Nigerian Overseer of the church was top on Google search this week. Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for Anglophone West Africa, made the disclosure in Lagos on Thursday. He said the search was from January 4 to January 11. Adeboye stepped down as the Overseer of RCCG, Nigeria and appointed his former Special Assistant on Finance, Pastor Joseph Obayemi, to take the office. The spectacle of Mike Eze-Nwalie Nwogu aka Pretty Mike, parading girls in chains at a wedding party, Indigenous People of Biafria (IPOB)‘s leader, Nnamdi Kanu‘s secret trial, and the first death in Nollywood were also on the list top searches this week. Adeboye’s announcement is the result of the controversial corporate governance code of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria. The code stipulates mandatory office tenure for general overseers of all registered churches in the country. Mike was in the news again with his not-too-pretty scene in a wedding. Mike, who was rumoured in December last year as being in a relationship with Snapchat sensation, Bobrisky, was recently seen attending a wedding with two ladies chained at the neck. Mike was on Wednesday arrested by the Lagos Police and made to sign an undertaking that he will not repeat the “dehumanising” act. He has also apologised for his actions. The death of Toyin Majekodunmi, Nollywood’s veteran Yoruba actress, popularly known as Iya Kike also dominated Google search. Before her death, the actress worked with the Lagos State Ministry of Information for many years. She was married to a fellow actor, Solomon Majekodunmi, popularly known as Baba Kekere. The rumoured assassination of the Gambia’s President-elect, Adam Barrow, also got people’s attention online. “Gambia’s President-elect, Adama Barrow has not been assassinated, contrary to rumours that went around on social media. Barrow, whose election result was challenged in court by the sitting President Yahya Jammeh, awaits the resolve of leaders from the ECOWAS mediation initiative as they try to persuade Jammeh to step down from power. ECOWAS has given Jammeh up till January 19 to quit office to allow the swearing in of Barrow on January 20,” the Google image maker said. The secret trial of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, also got people’s attention online. Kanu is being held for an 11-count charge as well as the operation of an illegal group and the operation of an unlicensed radio station. He was arraigned at the Federal High Court which held a secret trial for him and three others. There was heavy security presence within and around the court premises, and even relatives of the arraigned, could not gain access to the court. http://www.metronaija.com/2017/01/pastor-adeboye-pretty-mike-nnamdi-kanu.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |

The Supreme Court in Nigeria has given the Lagos State Government approval to file an appeal against the judgement of the Appeal Court which released Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, the former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha. In a ruling delivered by the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onoghene, the apex court granted the request of the Lagos State Government following a motion argued on its behalf by Miss Oluwayemisi Osusanya, a Senior State Counsel in the Lagos State Ministry of Justice. Justice Onoghene says the time within which to appeal against the verdict of July 12, 2013, had been extended for Lagos State government till Thursday. He, however, conceded to the motion and ordered the Lagos State government to file a notice of appeal within the next 30 days. Major Al-Mustapha was released by the court on July 12, 2013, after many years of standing trial for the alleged murder of Kudirat Abiola in 1996 http://www.metronaija.com/2017/01/lagos-gets-approval-to-appeal-against.html cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
