A teacher, Olakunle Oladeji, 33, who allegedly defrauded four students of their West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE) fees totaling N151, 000, was on Wednesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos .

The accused, who resides at No. 38, Ewupe Road, Sango Alagbado, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a five-count charge bordering on stealing and obtaining money under false pretence.

The prosecutor, Insp Abiola Adewale, said Oladeji committed the offences sometime in March 25, 2017 and April 25, 2017 at Rapid Bright Tutorial Centre at No. 18, Arigbanla St., Alagbado, Lagos.

He said the accused, who presented himself as a West African Examination Council official collected N151, 000 from the four students on the pretext of assisting them to register for WASCE.

“Oladeji fraudulently collected various sums from four students on the pretext that he would register them for the examination and converted the money to personal use,” the prosecutor told the court.

Adewale said that the accused collected the money from Mubarak Lawal, Sheun Adegboye, Blessing Oderinde and Damilola Yusuf, and had failed to refund the money after deliberately swindling them.

The offences contravened sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 314 prescribes 15 years jail term for obtaining money under false pretence.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adamawa State has recorded its first case of death from the viral hemorrhagic fever, popularly known as Lassa fever.

The victim was an official of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, identified as Gabriel Ambe from Numan, Adamawa State.

Ambe, who was reportedly serving in Gembu, Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State, died last Thursday at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola.




The Head of the state Rapid Response Team for Infectious Disease, Dr. Batulu Mohammed and another medical consultant, Dr. Sati Awang, who confirmed the development on Saturday, said the deceased tested positive for the viral hemorrhagic fever.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Fatima Abubakar, said the death was the first recorded case of Lassa fever in the state.

Abubakar said other health experts in infectious disease and representatives of the World Health Organisation were trying to identify individuals who came in contact with the deceased to contain its spread.

She maintained that since the deceased was suspected to have contracted the disease from Taraba State, the commissioner for health in Taraba State had also been contacted in order for both states to contain the disease.

Relatives of the deceased took to Facebook to pay tribute to the late officer. said Ambe was also an artiste- Producer, photogragher and IT/ digital guru

The Federal Government disclosed on Sunday that a week-long ceasefire was declared from March 19 which enabled the insurgents to drop off abducted Dapchi schoolgirl without attack by military.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed disclosed this in Lagos at a media briefing to give update and clarifications on the release of the schoolgirls in Dapchi, Yobe state.

The minister said there were no conspiracy theories as to how the insurgents were able to return the schoolgirls to Dapchi un-attacked despite troops presence,

“Unknown to many, we have been in wider cessation-of-hostility talks with the insurgents for some time now.

“The talks helped to secure the release of the police officers’ wives and the University of Maiduguri lecturers recently. And the talks did not stop thereafter.

“Therefore, we were able to leverage on the wider talks when the Dapchi girls were abducted.

“As I said earlier, the insurgents decided to return the girls to where they picked them from as a goodwill gesture.

“All they demanded was a ceasefire that will grant them a safe corridor to drop the girls. This is not new.

“Even in larger war situations, safe corridors are usually created for humanitarian and other purposes.

”Consequently, a week-long ceasefire was declared, starting from Monday, March 19. That is why the insurgents were able to drop the girls.

“This counters the conspiracy theories being propounded in some quarters concerning why it was so easy for the insurgents to drop off the girls without being attacked by the military’’.

The minister reiterated that the government neither paid ransom nor swapped any Boko Haram member to secure the release of the girls.

“This is a fact, irrespective of how a section of the press has tried to spin the story.

“The insurgents brought the girls back to the location of the kidnapping themselves as an apparent gesture of goodwill.

“This follows relentless efforts by the Government to find long-lasting solutions to the conflict,’’ he said.

He recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had directed all security agencies to do everything possible to bring the girls back unharmed.

Mohammed said the President’s directive dictated the method adopted -Back-channel talks with our international friends as mediators, and the result was the release of the girls-.

The minister said unlike the abducted Chibok girls, the Dapchi abduction ended about a month after it occurred and most of the girls were freed because of proactive action by the government.

“As I have said time and again, there is no government that will not face tragedies. What makes the difference is how such tragedies are managed.

“President Buhari put this in perspective when he said the response of his Administration is a marked departure from the attitude of the preceding administration in the aftermath of the kidnap of the 276 Chibok girls in 2014.

“Whereas it took that administration 18 days to even acknowledge the kidnap of the girls, the current administration was responsive and was not in denial.

He said that no stone was left unturned to secure the prompt release of the girls. (NAN)

Except he reports to the police on or before Wednesday, 28 March, the Nigeria Police has threatened to declare Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, wanted.

The Kogi State Police Command had written to the senator to appear before it to answer charges of gun running levelled against him by two suspects in police custody.

Jimoh Moshood, the Force Public Relations Officer, in a statement issued on Saturday, disclosed that an invitation and a court summon had been issued to Senator Melaye, both of which he did not honour.


He said the senator is wanted on grounds of criminal offences of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, Channels Television reports.

According to the PRO, Melaye’s summon follows the arrest of two men in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, on January 19, after they confessed to having committed various crimes such as kidnappings and armed robbery.

They also disclosed that the Senator had handed them a bag containing firearms.

The Nigerian military today reopened up the Maiduguri-Bama-Banki road, a major road that links the two local government headquarters in Borno state. The road had been closed for over four years after it was seized by Boko Haram terrorists.



Speaking at the reopening ceremony, the theatre commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Nicholas Rogers, said

''I will recall that on the 1st September 2014, the Maiduguri-Bama-Banki was closed due to the activity of the insurgency which affected the economy of the area. And in the course of the insurgency, together with our Cameroonian counterparts, we have been able to clear the road up to Sambisa forest. So it is time our people should start thinking of going to Bama. I am happy that these roads have been opened in the first phase of our operation, and that also gives our people the leverage of resuming their commercial activities along that axis and also giving them confidence and hope. We implore the commercial road users to kindly abide by the code of conduct that we have given them, so that we can ply the road with some level of safety. That does not mean that we are not going to have some challenges. We envisaged that the miscreants may want to lay one or two mines on the road. But we must developed the courage and confidence to use this road until they are worn out,” he said

Olusegun Obasanjo at the 14th annual lecture of the Women in Management, Business, and Public Service, held at the Eko Hotels and Suites on Thursday, stated that his daughter Iyabo Obasanjo is a no-nonsense kind of person.

Obasanjo made this known while advising women to play more roles in politics.

The Nigerian Army said its troops killed four armed militiamen in Ningi Local Government Council of Bauchi State.

Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu, the Director, Army Public Relations, via a statement issued on Sunday, said that nine militiamen were also arrested.

Chukwu said that troops of 33 Artillery Brigade of Operation “Lafiya Dole”, on patrol on March 17, were attacked by the militia group at Burra Junction in Ningi.

He stated that the militiamen fired at the troops on patrol.

Ckukwu added that the troops, thereafter, engaged the militias, killing four of them.

He explained that the troops also recovered five dane guns, 38 motorcycles and nine bicycles.

The army spokesman said that one soldier was wounded in the attack and referred to a medical facility for treatment.

“Troops of 33 Artillery Brigade, in the ongoing operation Lafia Dole, on March 17 at about 12:30 p.m. encountered members of a militia group, massing up at Burra Junction in Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

“The militiamen on sighting the troops, opened fire on them while the troops reacted immediately by engaging them.

“At the end of the encounter, four militias were killed, troops recovered five dane guns; 38 motorcycles, nine bicycles and nine militiamen arrested.

“One soldier, who sustained gunshot wounds is stable, having been evacuated to the hospital and receiving treatment,’’ Chukwu said. (NAN)

The Majority Leader, Abia State House of Assembly, Chief Chinedum Orji has led other youths in the State to endorse Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for a second term in office.

Chief Orji was addressing a mammoth crowd as the Chairman of the Abia Mega Youths Rally Grand finale held at the Umuahia township stadium. He led thousands of Abia youths to pass a vote of confidence on the Governor and adopted him as the sole gubernatorial candidate in 2019.

According to the law maker, justice demands that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu completes his two tenures as other former Governors from Abia North and Central did. He called on Abia youths to get their Permanent Voters Cards, saying that the card is their power.

In a reaction, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu commended Abia youths for being enterprising saying his proud of them. The Governor said he is confident that the crop and number of youths supporting the administration would outweigh those opponents who thrive in carrying ballot boxes during elections.

He challenged those who would want to contest against the ruling party in the State to paste their posters on the projects they have done for ABIA people, warning that nobody should paste bills on the projects done by him.

The Governor also congratulated the awardees of the Abia Mega Rally.

VICE President Yemi Osinbajo has said that despite the sectoral challenges, the federal government will complete major projects that will improve the power sector in the country and also implement a plan that will provide solar energy in a number of universities in the country.

He disclosed this on Friday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, when he received a delegation from the African Development Bank (AfDB) led by the bank’s Vice President for Power, Energy, Climate Change & Green Growth Complex, Mr Amadou Hott.

The Vice President noted that the present administration, through various projects, is making more efforts to ensure there was improved power supply nationwide.

One of such projects, Osinbajo noted, was the Federal Government’s Energising Education Programme (EEP), which is a key component of its Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) and Power Sector Reform Programme (PSRP).

The project, which is being carried out through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), is expected to power Federal Universities and Teaching Hospitals with Solar energy.

The first phase of the project will include nine federal universities and one teaching hospital.

The Vice President said it was an important project for government as it would “improve general satisfaction and create an atmosphere where academic activities can thrive and go undisturbed.”

While noting that the Federal Government has made budgetary allocation to fund the project in some of the federal universities, the Vice President said the Bank’s support would also be welcome.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says there is no attempt by the commission to under-register the South-East.

National Commissioner of the commission, South-East, Prof. Ibeanu Okechukwu, made this known while inaugurating Information Communication Technology/Continuous Voter Registration training centre in Enugu on Friday.

“I cannot sit in a zone where there is an orchestrated attempt to under-register the zone

“Enugu is one of the best performing states in the continuous voter registration in the country,” he said.

Okechukwu said that aside the 17 registration centres in the local government areas, 18 additional centres were created, bringing total registration centres in the state to 35.

On National Assembly’s re-ordering of 2019 elections time-table and President Muhammadu Buhari’s decline of assent to amended Electoral Act, he said INEC was not involved in anyway.

“The process of law-making and amendment is very clear. INEC is not involved in law-making; it only implements the law.”

On possibility of transmitting election results from polling units to collating centres electronically, Okechukwu said that INEC did not at anytime, promise to transmit results electronically.

He disclosed that the commission had been test-running how best to deliver electoral verdict, adding that the “idea was to get the most robust result transmission mechanism”.

According to him, the Electoral Act is clear on result management. It is essentially manual.

Earlier, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Mr Emeka Ononomadu, had said that Enugu registered more voters than most states in the country in ongoing CVR.

Ononomadu said that the commission had distributed 10,000 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to registered voters in the state, adding that 120,000 PVCs were still unclaimed in the state’s 17 local government areas.

“We have also upgraded some data capturing machines and distributed 11 new ones for improved CVR.”

He assured that INEC would continue to do its best to ensure that 2019 elections in Enugu State were exceptional.
