Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, has congratulated the Liberian president-elect, George Weah, for his victory. In a statement from the presidency, Mr. Buhari also congratulated the outgoing Liberian leader, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, for the peaceful conduct of the elections. Read the full statement by the Nigerian leader below: On behalf of the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari warmly congratulates George Weah on his election as the next President of the Republic of Liberia. President Buhari also commends the Liberian people on the peaceful conduct of the historic presidential run-off election, stressing that “this is another plus on Africa’s democratic scoreboard.” The President equally applauds the efforts of the National Election Commission of Liberia, as well as regional and international observers who have contributed immensely to the electoral process and the strengthening of post-conflict democracy in the West African country. Describing Mr. Weah’s victory as an affirmation of the will of the Liberian people to remain united, peaceful and prosperous, President Buhari pledged Nigeria’s readiness to work with Liberia on issues of mutual interest at bilateral, regional and global levels for the benefit of citizens of both countries. The Nigerian leader also commends outgoing President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, under whose 12-year watch Liberia had transformed from being a pariah state to a country doing remarkably well on many fronts such as, women and civil rights issue, peace building and consolidation, ECOWAS and the Mano River Union. President Buhari also notes that President Sirleaf deserves special commendation for the statesmanship she has shown in ensuring free and fair elections that will pave the way for a peaceful transfer of political power from one democratically elected leader to another for the first time in 73 years. Wishing President-elect Weah and Liberians a peaceful transition, he reassures them of Nigeria’s determination to sustain the current cordial relationship with Liberia. http://www.metronaija.ng/buhari-congratulates-liberias-george-weah/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
Mararaba Grade 1 Area Court, Aso Pada in Nasarawa State, on Friday sentenced two labourers to six months imprisonment each for stealing 50 tubers of yam. The judge, Upside Yaqub, however, gave the convicts, Habibu Kabiru, 25; and Salisu Hamidu, 22, both residents of Old Orange Market Mararaba, an option of N5, 000 fine each. Yaqub warned them to desist from committing crimes and ordered that the tubers of yam be returned to the owner. The convicts had pleaded guilty to a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, trespass, mischief and theft. Following the guilty plea, the Prosecutor, Agabi Auta, urged the court to try them summarily under Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. Earlier, Auta had told the court that the complainant, Utume Clement of Kudu village, Mararaba, reported the incident at the ‘A’ Division Police Station, Mararaba, on Dec. 22. He said that the convicts and one Musa Iliya, now at large, went to the complainant’s farm at Kudu village, Mararaba, and harvested 50 tubers of yam. The prosecutor said the convicts were apprehended while trying to put the yam in a sack and were handed over to the police immediately. He said the offences contravened Sections 79, 347, 348 and 287 of the Penal Code. http://www.metronaija.ng/2-men-bag-six-months-imprisonment-stealing-yam-nasarawa/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44 |
A Muslim community group has visited a series of churches in a major Nigerian city to show their solidarity with its Christian population. Members of the Islamic Movement, known as locally the Shia after their religious denomination, visited three major churches in Kaduna. The city in the country’s north west, has seen widespread religious violence in the past. Nigeria has an almost equal number of Muslims and Christians but Islam dominates the north while Christianity is strong in the south. Despite being part of the Muslim north, Kaduna has a significant Christian minority. The area has witnessed religious violence in the past. Although, it remains relatively segregated after riots between February and May 2000, that began over the decision to implement Sharia law across Kaduna State. Almost 1,000 people died in the violence, which also saw a number of homes and businesses destroyed. It only ended when the Nigerian army intervened to restore calm. Christians and Muslims came together to celebrate Christmas at several different churches (Islamic Movement of Nigeria) A 2003 report by Human Rights Watch found Christian and Muslim residents originally lived together but after the riots increasingly began moving away from members of different faiths as a “survival tactic”. But Dr Shuaibu Musa, the leader of the Shia group, is keen to promote tolerance and diversity. Addressing the congregation he vowed to protect every church in the city, the Vanguard newspaper reported. He said: “We are here to [make] merry with our Christian brothers on the birth of he whose return has been foretold by our Prophet to herald the appearance of the awaited one Imam Mahdi. “I will protect their religion and their Churches wherever they are found. We therefore hold these covenant that...Christians are not our enemy but our brothers and neighbours.” His words were echoed by the pastor of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Reverend Sule Mashan. He said: “Together we can champion unity among all religious people and take unified stance against aggressive leaders. The Church should join the struggle against oppressors and tyrants right away.” Another local Christian minister, Yohanna Buru, thanked the Shia group for joining them and said the number of Muslims attending Christmas services was rising every year. http://www.metronaija.ng/photos-shia-muslims-visit-churches-celebrate-christmas-kaduna/ cc: lalasticlala mynd44
