Politics › Mko Abiola Last Interview With BBC On The Day He Was Arrested. by Michael004(op): 1:29pm On Aug 29, 2017
This interview was conducted via phone by BBC in June, 1994 and has been written out below by us
BBC: What is happening at your house? Are you being arrested?
MKO: I’m being arrested, I’m just going out now with the police (National anthem being recited in the background by his supporters hence, a momentary pause in conversation) MKO (continues): There is a large crowd here and I am being escorted out to detention by singing the national anthem
BBC: Why are they arresting you?
MKO: They are arresting me on the allegation of felony and treason or something like that (his voice becomes low and he
continues) they are not doing anything they are just taking me away. Please let me go, you know I’m delaying them.
BBC: and so where are you now? Are you in your car? MKO: I’m in my car now
BBC: is the police with you in your car or are they escorting …..
(MKO cuts in) MKO: The commissioner of police is in the car with me and my senior wife (Kudirat Abiola) is in the car with me.
BBC: Why are they letting you talk on the phone to the BBC while in the midst of arresting you?
MKO: (chuckles) they’ve come to arrest me not to arrest my mouth
BBC: You sound very cheerful about it chief Abiola
MKO: of course you know(chuckles on) it is all part of democracy here
BBC: And you are happy to go to the police and await whatever charges they’re going to file against you
MKO: I’m not in any way disturbed by it, ANY SACRIFICE IS IN ORDER if it will bring democracy, peace and prosperity to Nigeria.
BBC: Is it possible to talk to the commissioner of police who’s with you in the car
MKO: I don’t know if the commissioner of police is authorised to talk, he cannot talk to the press.
BBC: what is your advice now to your supporters many of them we heard a moment ago?
MKO: I told them before I left home to just stay calm! It is very very important that they stay calm
BBC: So you are appealing for calm you don’t want them to take any direct action in your support
MKO: No, no, no, no
BBC: You still say you’re the president of Nigeria but it’s no much good if you’re going to be in jail
MKO: well, Mandela was in jail for 27years, Kenyatta was in jail. I suppose that is one of the qualifications you need in this part of
the world, don’t worry yourself my friend ……. *End of phone interview. Mko, You are a really brave man, may your spirit continue to rest well............ embarassed

the Anambra igbo is not greater than any igbo, there is no caste system in igbo unlike Yoruba land, secondly I created that Ebonyi thread that you are quoting so thanks for quoting another of my thread.

thirdly I don't give a damn about igbos yorubas or hausas or any tribe, I created my threads just to enjoy myself.

but you remember the akintola wars before the civil war and the speech he made that "Let's all find a common ground in hating the igbos if that will bring us unity"

yes he said it.
And you are too lazy to bring the video where he said that. Must you always act stupidly?

the real topic of this thread is

[b]THE ONLY THING UNITING YORUBAS IS THEIR HATRED FOR IGBOS [\b]

We know that in Yoruba land, the Ijebus look down upon osogbo and other beggarly yoruba sub-set(even shymexx here on NL believes Ijebus are superior yorubas to other ragtag subset). Many other yorubas consider Ijebus stingy and greedy and won't even marry them. Many Ijebus evenprefer Igbos) Modakeke people are still at loggerheads with Ife people. The general yoruba tribe are confused about who's greater between Oni of Ife and Alafin of Oyo. Ife people no gree for Oyo and vice versa. Many yorubas despise yorubas in kwara

The Nigerian project helped the yorubas and gave them unity, Akintola and Awo simply helped them channel the hatred they had for each other towards Ndiigbo, in Igbo hatred, they were united, that was the purpose of the Yoruba Ronu speech by Akintola!

They are scared of Nigeria's disintegration, cos they will lose their object of unity ie Ndiigbo, they will also lose their Igbo hatred as Ndiigbo will no longer be part of same union with them and probably channel that hatred towards each other as in the days of old, they will likely fall apart and return to their pre Nigerian Kiriji wrestling match days.
[/s]Is that why an anambra Bishop cannot lead in imo? Is that why an anambra man consider himself as greater than other igbo, is that why other igbos consider ebonyi igbos as lowlife igbos. Why don't you remove the log on your eyes first before removing from another people eyes. You keep shouting they hate igbo, let me ask you, is it possible for someone to hate you if you don't hate the person first? You can't allow other tribes to rule in your land but you want to have a say in other people land and when they refuse, you start crying a victim cry on how they hate you. When you are selling a Sandy goods, you did not know, but it is when they are paying you a stony money that you carry your mouth up like 'na my dog kill am'. Oga ade, your tricks don't work anymore, maybe you can try another one. It is in your land I heard anambra men saying they can't marry ebonyi women. Go and sleep, think about your problem before talking about other.
Romance › Re: Any Man Who Thinks All Women Want From Men Is Money, Has Low Self Esteem. by Michael004: 6:58pm On Aug 28, 2017
[s]
DouglasH92:
I have read comments from a lot of Nigerian men on this forum and other platforms on social media that basically assert that all women want from a man is money. These men believe that the only concern the average Nigerian girl has when dating or looking for a man to hook up with, is the size of his pocket. But is this really true? Of course not.

In my opinion, anyone who thinks this way has so stripped himself of any modicum of self worth or self-value and has heaved all this worth and value unto money, something external from himself. Such a person believes himself and his qualities not adequate enough to interest, intrigue, gratify or satisfy a woman, so he finds a savior in money to answer to all these needs.

Like let's be realistic here. Women are humans just like men are, and as humans women have needs other than monetary needs. They have qualities that they find attractive in the opposite sex that can interest them and satisfy a need, and cause them to invest themselves in such person. Money isn't everything. And I am not saying money isn't a criterion women look out for, but money isn't the only criterion like most men think, and most times it isn't even among the most important criteria. To be honest some women don't even place money high on their priority list when evaluating a man. There are other qualities that matter more and these qualities are subjective. There are women who would invest themselves in men that are intelligent, or men that are confident and hardworking, or men that are good looking and well groomed, or men that are highly skilled in a field that interests them, or men that are funny, witty or good with words, or men that are adventurous and well exposed, or men that know how to please a woman sexually. There are lot of qualities.

A relationship is a journey of different courses and there are women that love to explore these variety of courses based on their interests and likes. But when a man nests a flawed notion of women as just wanting a man that has money, then his reality begins to manifest just as he believes, and invariably these are the kind of women that he'll meet.

In my opinion, any man that thinks this way is either extremely ignorant or has low self esteem because he doesn't perceive himself as having qualities that can attract and keep women besides money. I mean for fucksake there are men who are being taken care of by their girlfriends. There are men their girlfriends would be willing to do anything for, whether monetarily or otherwise. In such cases it is definitely not money that's keeping her, then what is? Obviously it's other qualities the man possesses that she values higher than money.

Rarity is what separates the most sort out for from those who aren't sort out for. When you possess something that is valuable to someone, and that thing is rare to find, you will become extremely valuable to such person. Many people have money. Finding a man who has money these days is the easiest thing to do. Having money doesn't separate you from the crowd. What separates you from the crowd is the qualities you possess and to the degree you possess them. Instead of coming online to whine about how women only care about money, why not try developing your best qualities and use them to attract women. No one can love you if you don't love yourself first. No one can value you if you don't value yourself.

Afenifere is very right, this is pure double or even triple standards. FG is supposed to have locked up all Afenifere leaders a long time ago for collecting millions of naira from Goatluck Jonaddaft to help him rig the 2015 presidential election. You will all recall that even Olu Falae of the the leaders of Afenifere admitted collecting about 100 million naira from ATM-Dasuki Sambo / Nemadi Ester in order to work for Goatluck during the 2015 election.

These idiots called Afenifere did not shout nor scream marginalization and restructuring when Goatluck was looting and sharing money with them. After Goatluck lost election and also errecction, they now remember marginalization and restructuring. Old foolish rags. Tinubu the Lagos thief taught all the old fools a bitter lesson, Tinubu defeated them home and away and rendered them irrelevant and turned them to begers begging Goatluck Jonaddaft for contracts and money.

If Afenifere likes, they can change their tribe to Ibo, it is allowed, I even suspect them to be Ibos because only Ibos can sell their parents for money the same way the Afenifere rags are doing. The next time that DSS comes for Nnamdi Cownu, let Afenifere rags go and stop DSS, they will all be given mass burial which will save their families money.

Politics › Benue May Share Similar Culture, But We’re Not Igbos At All – Jerry Agada by Michael004(op): 9:31pm On Aug 27, 2017
Professor Jerry Agada, one time Minister of State for Education, and former National President of Association of Nigerian Authors speaks with John Charles on the purported parts of Benue being part of the eastern states

Your community shares border with communities in Igboland can you briefly tell us about your ancestry?

I am from a place called Orokam in Ogbadibo LGA of Benue State. Orokam, as you know, is a border town. Obolafo is the next eastern town. In fact, there are some areas in Orokam that our people and some Igbo people almost sweep our compound together because of the nearness at the boundary. That is my ancestral home. And you know, Orokam came to be as a result of migration in the very old days when Kwararafa kingdom came to settle in that place.

But there are some communities in Ogbadibo, your local government, Ado, Okpokwu and Obi council areas, the Ezza, Izzi, Effium Ai Aroga that are dominated by Igbo?

These communities exist in part of the areas you mentioned but I would talk about my own boundary. Let me tell you that because of living across borders, somebody like Aaron Akor is a chief somewhere in Eteh now, but before, we thought he is one of our people. In fact, we thought his people are Orokam people. But when he became chief of that place, we said but this man is one of our people. When people stay together, go to the same primary schools, the tendency to enjoy things together is there, even in such a way that they enjoy scholarship in the state. You see that some people from Eteh come to collect state scholarship here because we are together.

It happens in all boundary areas. Remember when I contested governorship with former governor Suswam and others, somebody wrote in the paper that, in the first place, I was not an Idoma man, that I was an Igboman and that it was during the civil war that I came to Benue because my father was selling across the border, after the war, he settled in my place. Meanwhile I was born and brought up in Orokam, my village in Ogbadibo. So because of intermarriage, we live together and we interact together. Igbo come to our own stream to fetch water, they come to our markets. Remember the case of Bakassi in Cross River, that is the similarity between our people and the Igbo.

Who are the Arogas in Ogbadibo? Are they mostly Igbo?

That’s what I am telling you. They are part of Owukpa in Ogbadibo. You cannot say they are mostly Igbo but they share everything together. The interaction became so permanent that you think they are Igbo. People tell you if you go there, there are so many Igbo there. But that is as a result of living together for so long.

That part of the state has similar culture with the Igbo and even share words. Why this common practice if they do not originate from the same place?

Let me tell you how these similarities came about. When you went to settle in those boundary areas, at least you intermarry and even go to same market. We were doing things together. Then, there was this feeling among our people that because we had come to that place as a result of migration, we must prepare and fortify ourselves so that people would not overrun us as a result of war again. So, the Igbo person from the boundary would tell our people ‘bring this type of Juju and use it so that nobody can overrun you’. As such, at that time, our people adopted their type of Juju called Okpa.

Apart from Okpa, there were other types and even one called ‘’Onmabe’’, which is a type of masquerade. Then, according to them, they believed with the masquerade, you wouldn’t have any form of accident. It was the Igbo that owned the masquerade then. But because of the interaction between our people and Igbo, they also mounted the ‘’Onmabe’’ in our areas so that if you come to our place here, you would see the ‘Okpa’ and ‘Onmabe’ and if you cross to the East in Obolafor, you would see same thing. That would make you think we have the same culture. There was a day our community decided to collect all the ‘Okpas’ and all the ‘Onmabes’ and dumped them in the east across the border. Any one that remained, we set them ablaze and we did away with that culture.

But in a way, the typography in Ogbadibo, Ado and Okpokwu are similar to Igbo land?

Well, that is true. If you are coming from the north down this area, by the time you get to Ogbadibo, the vegetation like palm trees, trees, typography and the setting are like the Igbo.

And now, those agitating for Biafia are laying claiming parts of Benue originated from them due to some of these common practice, even the language…

If you know history of languages, you would discover that all nations in the world have similarity in language and even in pronunciation. Go to Congo , our Tiv people, Yorubas and even people of Cross River , sometime, there is element of common pronunciation of words. Sharing same language or words does not make us Igbo, the similarity of language pronunciation is all over the world and you can’t use it to lay claim to the area. There is symbiotic relationship among people of the world.

Do you think those who live around the borders are being marginalised either by the Federal Government or Benue State?

Am I not occupying sensitive position in government now ( Chairman, Benue State Civil Service Commission) and I’m from the border town? I was once a minister, Audu Ogbe is also a minister from that axis. That is why we have certificate of origin because you know where you come from. The main fact that you are living around the boundary does not exempt you from occupying certain position which is not a hindrance. Benue and Idoma do not originate from Igbo at all and that is my submission.

What is your thought about the Biafra agitation?

Well, if not that you are asking me, I do not give it any thought as such because the first time I heard about Biafra was during my geography class in secondary school as a form one student. If you look at the map of Nigeria down extreme end, they wrote ‘Bite of Biafra’. I don’t even know what that means till date. I didn’t bother to think about it because I believe it is not Nigeria map. The time I started hearing about Biafra was the time of civil war. Remember the civil war started in 1967. When the war started and the Igbo were moved away from Otukpo, the Igbo who were in school with us were moved, then the Idomas, Tivs and other northerners who were in schools in the east, they were also moved from there to the north. The war started from my village and we were not moved but the Igbo were moved out of the border in our village. We were not part of Igbo and if we were part of them, why did the war start from the boundary in my village?

If Nnamdi Kanu visits Benue State, will you welcome him, because some of the youths said that if he comes, they will welcome him?

Well, you know madness; there is no yardstick to measure it. People are just like that. The youths who are saying that they would welcome him did not see Biafra war. This is democracy; anybody can exercise his or her right. So if Kanu comes from wherever he wants to come and if anybody from this side wants to give him himself, his mother, wife and children, then let them go ahead and dash Kanu because they want to play to the gallery. It is entirely your business; Agada can’t question you. But as for me and my family, there is nothing like Kanu and Biafra. He is only promoting what he heard or is it because he was detained and the Federal Government is promoting him. Who is Kanu? Many of the people, the MASSOB and IPOB have not seen war, they only heard and that is why they are making this noise.

If Kanu succeeds in his struggle through referendum, would you and your people go with Biafra?

I am not going to be part of Biafra. I will exercise my conscience and I will tell my people what I know. Is it an offence to live around a boundary, so why would they extend the referendum to us? What is the basis for asking us whether we want to join them?

But Kanu is laying claim that parts of the state belong to Biafra and you corroborated by your initial statement that you saw something like ‘Biafra Bite’ in Nigeria map way back in your form one in secondary school…

I have never seen a map of Biafra with Benue on it and I don’t know what the Bite of Biafra means because it is along the coastline or maybe it is a foreign name.

What kind of restructuring would you subscribe to?

The type of restructuring I will subscribe to is the one that will give all the federating units that sense of belonging so that they are on their own. I am not looking out for restructuring that you would want to restructure us out of Benue. We are talking about the restructuring that the centre should not be too powerful so that all the federating units can have their own self-actualisation that would augur well for their own system.

What is your view on the quit notice by Arewa youth that all Igbos should vacate the north by Oct 1?

Sometimes, I sit and I say everybody including me is mad. Again, I ask myself if I am still alive. On what basis are such declaration making. Who are these youths? For me, I don’t recognise them and their type of leadership. But then, I talk of general madness, some people would play to the gallery in such a way that once they hear about something like that and because they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, on that day, they will come out massively and start killing people saying there is quit notice.

You would think it is a joke but before you know it, hundreds of people would have been killed. That is my fear because somebody has mentioned it. However, I see it as a way for Arewa people to be looking for trouble just as Kanu is assuming every power and has attained a status that they are fighting for Biafra.

Crime › Jungle Justice: Why People Are Quick To Mete Instant Justice On Suspects by Michael004(op): 9:12pm On Aug 27, 2017
Recently, cases of mob action popularly called jungle justice resurfaced in parts of the country especially Lagos where several suspects were killed. OLALEKAN OLABULO writes that several factors could be responsible for this, even as police move to nip it in the bud.
IT is not uncommon these days for Nigerians to open their whatsapp platforms and be inundated with all manners of graphic pictures and videos, mostly offensive, involving cases of mob actions in which alleged suspected kidnappers and other criminals are set on fire or beaten to death.

Mobs blame suspects for the fate that befall them, while police blame the mob for taking the lawminto their own hands, even as rights groups and legal practitioners sometime blame the failure of the legal system for the perpetration of mob actions which have failed to abate.

Less than 72 hours after the police arrested about 30 suspects in connection with the killing of two suspected ritualists in Obadeyi Area of Ijaiye, Lagos recently, two other suspects were killed in similar mob actions at Ile Zik Area of Ikeja and Mosalasi Bus Stop along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in the state. The timely intervention of anti riot policemen had prevented further mob action from residents who sometimes defy the presence of heavily armed policemen.

As gory as most of the scenes are, one will always find several people recording them with their mobile phones. Unfortunately, sometimes, the alleged suspects turned out to be innocent. Examples of such misguided acts include that of the Ikorodu murder of a young comedian, Chinedu Paul, popularly known as Think twice.

In different parts of the country, scavengers, mentally-challenged people as in the case of a young girl in Borno State mistaken for a suicide bomber, including okada riders, had been mistakenly lynched for offences they never committed.

Late last year, a commander of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority was murdered by an angry mob who accused operatives of the traffic agency of causing the death of a motor boy. In another gory incident, four suspected land speculators in Adamo area of Ikorodu were killed after some people raised the alarm that they were members of the dreaded Badoo group. It took the intervention of heavily armed policemen to douse the tension resulting from the backlash in the Ikorodu community as colleagues of the slain land speculators went on the rampage, setting ablaze three houses and motorcycles. Unfortunately the damage had been done and could never be remedied.

The issue got to a head recently at the height of the kidnap saga in Lagos when a tunnel supposedly being used by kidnappers was discovered on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. Even the police in Lagos State had cause to worry and raised the alarm over the spate of mob killings. Lagos State police commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, had to make use of different fora to warn residents to desist from actions that constitute taking the laws into their hands. In an apparent attempt to discourage the act, the police arrested no fewer than 80 suspects in connection with some of the incidents of mob actions in Ikorodu, Obadeyi, Ikeja and Alagbado areas of the state.

Why it is happening

Some of the residents, who spoke with Sunday Tribune blamed corruption in the police and the judiciary for the resort to jungle justice. The residents unanimously alleged that several suspects often regain freedom after they might have been handed over to the police or other law enforcement agencies.

A resident of Agric Area of Ikorodu, Toba Olorunfemi, believes that feelings of revenge sometimes form the basis of mob actions and that it will be difficult to stop.

“It (jungle justice) is very difficult to stop. When you witness some of the atrocities perpetrated by these criminals, one would be forced to join in determining their fate.

“Imagine a scene where a family of about six people is wiped out by Badoo members and one of them is arrested. What would naturally come to the mind of an average person is to give the suspect a dose of his own medicine.

“When you also consider the fact these people have sponsors who are very wealthy and influential, you may have no choice than to resort to jungle justice. Some of the people that were arrested in the past and handed over to the police were released and that is even more dangerous to the people that arrested them, “he said, adding that the criminals want to live on the fast lane without working for money.

The police, however, disagree. They averred that cases of jungle justice occur as a result of lack of trust in the police and the judiciary which shouldn’t be. The security force however lay the blame solely on pervading anger in the country, occasioned by economic hardship, illiteracy and lack of public enlightenment.

A senior police officer who spoke under the condition of anonymity said “I want to blame some of those incidents on rumour-mongering. If you look at the Obadeyi story, there were many unfounded rumours and yet no single track of ritual killing in that area.

“There were rumours that they saw the ritualists dragging a woman into the drainage. I searched the drainage thoroughly and there was not a trace of any killing or any woman. There were also rumours that there were underground link to Agege abbatoir, Ayobo and other places… these claims were unfounded. Some of them even said that they brought out TVs, generators and other appliances from the drainage,” the senior policeman said.

He also blamed illiteracy for the rising cases of jungle justice, saying: “I want to describe that (the act) as the height of illiteracy. How can you just kill and set somebody ablaze after an accusing them of being kidnappers or committing other crimes. I strongly believe that well-educated people will not indulge in such things.”

The officer police called for strong and effective orientation of the people on the position of the law on jungle justice.

“There is anger in the land. Some are merely taking advantage of the economic situation in the country to vent their anger on any accused person, “he noted.

He was however quick to admit that lack of trust in the police is also a major reason for jungle justice but pointed out that the problem goes beyond the police.

“Yes, these people don’t have any trust in the police but they don’t have any in the judiciary as well. What people quickly forget is that the police can only arrest, they cannot commit criminals to prison,” he said.

Faulty justice system?

Speaking on the reoccurring cases of jungle justice in the country, the Executive Director of Access to Justice, Joseph Otteh, pointed out that the resonance of jungle justice is the failure of the criminal justice system to hold people accountable for the crime they commit.

“The state of our criminal justice system is weak, disoriented, and not reliable. The primary operatives of the system have clearly not lived up to expectation; they constantly perform below par and many times offer bail for justice.

“The criminal justice system is slack; there is nobody to hold anybody accountable for performance. When you report a case to the police and that case is compromised at the police level and there is nothing to say to those who are involved in the investigation to account for how they performed in relation to their duty (and the case at hand) that means there is problem,” Otteh said.

Way Forward

Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, Olatunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, while speaking on what the police in the state are doing on rising cases of jungle justice said: “we are trying as much as possible to curtail the situation.

We embark on training and retraining of our officers from time to time. You can see that we made some arrests recently. We are not limiting our efforts to that; we have embarked on enlightenment exercises to many communities. The CP had been in some communities in Ikorodu and other places and warned them to desist from jungle justice.”

Azeez Bolaji, one of the coordinators of the Ikorodu Ambassadors a socio-cultural group also condemned jungle justice.

“Absolutely, we as a group never supported jungle justice; albeit, the crimes being perpetrated in Ikorodu and its environs these days, have created fears in the minds of the locals. However, there are several agencies that are trained and given the mandate to ensure our safety, therefore, when a criminal is apprehended by the locals, we are duty-bound to hand him or her to these law enforcement agencies. No matter our level of provocation, we as law abiding citizens and esteemed members of Ikorodu Ambassadors, should never be found amongst those breaking the law or throwing caution to the winds,“ he stated.
