- No fewer than 21.4 million Nigerians have been registered by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) - Aliyu Aziz, the managing director of the commission said this was in line with his goal to register 28 million Nigerians by December, 2017.He also said the commission has continued to record growth in the population of the database The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says it has registered no fewer than 21.4 million Nigerians into the National Identity Database and issued them the National Identification Number (NIN). Mr Aliyu Aziz, the managing director of the commission, gave the figure on Monday, September 11, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. Aziz said that the new enrolment figure was reached at the close of work on September 2016. According to him, the commission has also set up more enrolment centres across the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, bringing the number of such centres to about 805. He said that with the deployment of additional enrolment centres, NIMC was currently active in 556 local government areas. Aziz said that the commission was also working to activate the dormant centres in the remaining 218 councils to expand the enrolment coverage. He said that this was in line with his goal to register 28 million Nigerians into the database by the end of December, 2017. The managing director of NIMC said that the commission has continued to record exponential growth in the population of the database, in spite of the challenges facing the commission. He recalled that the commission had little above seven million NINs in thedatabase when he took over the mantle of leadership in November, 2015. Aziz said that in spite of the challenges and constraints, he remained undaunted. The NIMC chief said that he had continued to manage the scarce resources to ensure that the database was populated before the enforcement of the mandatory use of the NIN for all identity-based transactions. He said that the commission had issued a token for the citizens and legal residents to assert their identity , the federal government announced that as from January 1, 2018, no Nigerian will obtain or renew international passports without having the National Identification Number (NIN). Mohammed Babandede, the comptroller general of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), while addressing state house correspondents on Tuesday, August 1, said the development is part of efforts to have a centralised database for Nigerians and to also improve the business environment in the country. A group , Buhari Support Organisation , Enugu State Chapter , on Sunday demanded the resignation of the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Aisha Alhassan , for saying that President Muhammadu Buhari promised to stay in office for only one term. Alhassan recently declared that she would back a former vice president , Atiku Abubakar , for the presidency in 2019, rather than the incumbent, Buhari . Claiming that Buhari had earlier vowed to serve only one term , the minister promised to quit if the President decides to seek re - election. Reacting to the development , the pro - Buhari group , Buhari Support Organisation , said Alhassan should, without any delay , resign her appointment as a minister in Buhari ’s cabinet. Chairman of BSO , Enugu State , Chief Anike Nwoga, in a statement made available to journalists, said the minister was not loyal to Buhari ’s administration . “ We know Atiku Abubakar is her godfather but it is difficult for us to comprehend why she should make such an outburst against President Buhari . “ Her outburst clearly shows her disloyalty to the Buhari government and so we see no reason why she should remain in office as minister . “ She should be honourable enough to resign and face Atiku Abubakar ’s 2019 campaign ,” Nwoga said. The group went ahead to declare that Buhari never told Nigerians that he would only stay one term in office .Nwoga noted that Buhari requires two terms in office in order to effectively address the problems in the country , which he said were created by the Peoples Democratic Party . “ Before the 2015 presidential election , there was no day the issue of one term was discussed. “ Rather, from day one , we had always known that the rot left behind by the successive Peoples Democratic Party regimes was deep and that President Muhammadu Buhari needed eight years in order to cleanse the Augean Stable. “ He needs to consolidate the war against corruption address insecurity in the land and also consolidate the foundation for economic prosperity. “ Women Affairs Minister , Alhassan , has the inalienable right to support anybody of her choice for president in 2019 but President Muhammadu Buhari should complete his second term ,” the group added . The Buhari Support Organisation , in the same vein, faulted former VicePresident, Abubakar ’s claims that he was sidelined , after contributing to Buhari emergence as President in 2015. Nwoga pointed out that Abubakar nominated several persons in Buhari ’s administration . “ How could Atiku Abubakar say he was sidelined when he nominated HajiaAlhassan and a host of his loyalists intothe Federal Executive Council and other important offices ?” the group wondered. |
Oil- markets on Friday saw Brent crude supported by Saudi Arabia hoping to cut October supplies, while United States crude was curbed by refinery - outages due to Hurricane- Harvey damages , which dented demand . Focus was shifting to three other hurricanes that are currently tearing through the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico . Brent crude futures rose to 54. 57 dollars a barrel at 0735 GMT , with the benchmark for international oil prices earlier marking its highest since April at 54.79 dollars a barrel. Saudi Arabia will cut crude oil allocations to its customers worldwide in October by 350 , 000 barrels per day, an industry source familiar with Saudioil policy told Media on Thursday . The United States West TexasIntermediate crude futures were at48.98 dollars a barrel , 11 cents below their last settlement. Traders said that the dip was a result of low refining activity following Hurricane Harvey, which hit the U.S . Gulf coast two weeks ago . It knocked out almost a quarter of the country ’s huge refinery industry, cutting demand for crude oil refining lifeblood . “ Most refineries are restarting and we expect a near- full recovery by month - end,” U.S . investment banker, Jefferies said. Harvey’ s impact was also felt in oil production. U. S. oil output fell by almost 8 percent, from 9 .5 million barrels per day to 8. 8 million bpd , according to the Energy Information Administration. Port and refinery closures along the Gulf coast and harsh sea conditions in the Caribbean have also impacted shipping. “ Imports (of oil) to the U.S . Gulf Coast fell to levels not seen since the 1990s ,” ANZ bank said. Traders said it would take weeks for the U. S. petroleum industry to return to full capacity , and that under the current conditions it was difficult to identify fundamental market trends . As the oil industry continues to grapple with the fallout from Harvey , a much bigger Hurricane was lashing the Caribbean islands and heading for the United States. Hurricane Irma, which has become one of the biggest storms ever measured , on Friday hit the Dominican Republic and Haiti, heading for Cuba and the Bahamas . It was predicted to hit Florida by Saturday. The U.S . National Hurricane Center(NHC) said that Irma was still a Category 5 hurricane, with wind speeds of 160 - 185 miles per hour (260 - 295 km / h). On Irma’ s heels , Hurricane Jose isheading for the Caribbean Leeward islands , which have just been devastated by Irma , with wind speeds of 120 mph (195 km /h ).With storm Katia about to hit the Mexican Gulf coast, there are three major hurricanes currently active in the region.

- Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has never hidden his passion for small businesses in Nigeria - A new law was recently passed to strengthen Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSME’s) - The Senate President is determined to ensure that with the new law, small business can compete favourably in the business environment Nigeria's Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has said the new legislations, Secured Transactions in Movable Assets Act and the Credit Reporting Act passed by the National Assembly in June and and signed into law by then Acting President Yemi Osinbajo will support the growth of MSME’s in Nigeria. The Senate President stated that this will be possible through increased bank lending and reduce bank exposure to loan defaults through pre-examination of credit worthiness for would be borrowers. NAIJ.com gathered that under the law, potential borrowers can now register assets other than land and property as collateral to secure a loan from banks. Saraki has always advocated for the development of small businesses in Nigeria. Photo credit: Nigerian Senate READ ALSO: Misau: Spokesman of Nigerian police lied on national TV - Senate Securing financing through loans has long been a problem for Nigerian entrepreneurs in the past as most MSME owners rely on personal savings or loans from family and friends to launch their business ventures. The new law, also known as the Collateral Registry Act, allows banks to increase lending to MSME’s, while not negatively impacting their balance sheets. Saraki who hailed the passage and the opportunity for economic and MSME growth the new laws afford Nigerians stated that "this is a win-win situation for our economy and society”. He continued: “The private sector, the federal government and the National Assembly worked together to create the enabling environment for MSME’s to grow, diversify the economy and increase employment. “We should all be proud of delivering a law that will allow many people to provide for their families and community.” The Credit Reporting Act, allows credit information sharing between credit bureaux and those companies that lend money or extend credit for goods and services. Under the Act, companies will have access to the credit history to review whether there is a history of loan defaults or other financial blemishes. This extra layer of protection will serve to reduce lending risks, while preserving credit services to borrowers with good credit histories. “Combined, the new laws make good economic and business sense. Already bank lending to MSME’s has increased and is expected to grow considerably for the remainder of the year and in 2018.” “In both developed and developing economies small business growth is the engine of the economy and employment growth. With a high unemployment in Nigeria, the growth and support for MSME’s is critical. “The National Assembly will also be looking to see what existing support programmes are working and can be created to help MSME owners to better understand the use of credit, management skills training, mentor relationships, marketing and how to pursue government procurement contracts” Saraki added. Meanwhile, the federal government has kick-started plans to establish a public beneficial ownership register. In a meeting held on Wednesday, September 6 in Abuja, key agencies of the government fine-tuned strategies for the implementation of the policy. The meeting which was held under the auspices of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) had in attendance the representatives of the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE), the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Federal Ministry of Justice, Civil Society Organisations amongst others.

Its actually true, Effiong was killed but his deceitful boss was spared and celebrated back. |
The vice president of the defunct Republic of Biafra, Late General Phillip Effiong, may have died with regrets - This indication was given by his kinsman, Elder Enefiok Ekefre - He urged the federal government to give the Effiong family the same privileges given to Late Chukwuemeka Odimegwu family after his death A chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom state, Elder Enefiok Ekefre, has alleged that the Igbos abandoned Late General Philip Effiong who he said died a Biafran rebel. Ekefre made the comment in an interview with Vanguard, even as he chided the Igbos for abandoning the Late Effiong. He lamented that Effiong, the vice president of the defunct Republic of Biafra who died in 2003, was not given the amnesty accorded to Late Ojukwu by the federal government. General Effiong was the vice president of the defunct Biafra Republic. His words: “The Igbo are expecting support forgetting that they all looked the other way and allowed General Effiong who made the historic declaration that ended the bloody civil war to live and die a Biafra rebel while Ojukwu died a Nigerian Army General. “General Philip Effiong, an Ibiono Ibom man, was the vice president to Ojukwu. Mr. M. U. Akpan, the Secretary to the Government of Biafra (SGB) was also from Ibiono. General Effiong signed the instrument of surrender but when the Igbo were talking of payment of gratuity and pension, they only presented General Ojukwu and refused to mention General Effiong. “He lived and died a Biafran military officer but Ojukwu’s rank was restored with salaries and gratuity paid from 1966. Today, the Igbo are complaining of marginalization and oppression, forgetting that justice and injustice should not be selective.” Ekefre appealed to the federal government to make adequate compensation for the family of the late General Effiong in the spirit of true reconciliation and justice. He said the agitation by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) was ill-timed, stressing that “the Igbo had President Goodluck Jonathan from South-south, Senate President from South-east, Secretary to the Government of the Federation government, minister of finance and General Azubike Ihejirika as Chief of Army Staff, and they could not ask for their republic then.” He also lamented that the south-south, south-east and south-west regions are not united. Meanwhile, Nigerian novelist, Chimamanda Adichie, has debunked quotes attributed to her which gave the impression that she was in support of the Biafran agitation in some news websites.
