Mr Ochiba, while handing over the seized drugs to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, commended the inter-agency collaboration between sister agencies and the Nigeria Customs. “Let me use this medium to commend the Nigerian Navy for their support to the anti-smuggling drive of the command and also the NDLEA, together with other sister agencies, for their support. “This seizure is a symbol of the cordial working relationship with sister agencies and also depicts that the security agencies have no overlapping functions in the discharge of our statutory responsibilities,” he said. The NDLEA Area Commander and Assistant Commander, General Narcotics, Samuel Gadzama, while receiving the seized drug items, acknowledged the synergy and cooperation between the Nigeria Customs Service and the NDLEA. He commended the Service for their continued support and the improved working relationship, particularly since the new Chairman of NDLEA Buba Marwa assumed office, charging them not relent but intensify their efforts for the good of the nation. https://dailynigerian.com/nigerian-customs-intercepts-6/ |

Ace banker and Group Managing Director of FBN Holdings, Urum Kalu Eke (UK Eke), has emerged winner of the prestigious Zik Prize in Professional Leadership Award for the year 2020 in recognition of his strides in the banking industry. Announcing the choice of Eke for the award at a virtual press conference yesterday, Prof Pat Utomi, chairman of the selection committee and member of the Board of Public Policy Research and Analysis Centre (PPRAC), organisers of the award scheme, said he was after a rigorous review process by the board. Utomi described Eke as a consummate Banker with close to 4 decades experience in Financial Services, Audit and Capital Market operations across various financial institutions, who is credited with helping develop First Bank businesses within the Public Sector, Retail and Private Banking Groups. “He is being celebrated for his unblemished record of service and enormous contributions to the development and growth of the African Financial services industry,” he said. An honour to whom it is due Utomi said Eke, 56, who has had nearly four decades in the banking industry, and continues to make tremendous impact, especially in his capacity as Managing Director of FBN Holdings, where he has led the institution on the part of profitability, is one of Africa’s finest bankers whose records speak for “so eloquently.” Utomi’s views are shared by many industry players who told Business Hallmark that the honour to banker is most deserving. “It is a very good choice and an honour well deserved. It is a recognition of professional excellence,” said Mazi Okechukwu Unaegbu, author and former president of Chattered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria. “U. K Eke has done well as a banker. And as GMD of FBN Holding’s, he has made his mark. Those who made the choice did a very good job. Rather than look for politicians who carry money about, they decided to honour someone who has contributed meaningfully to the economy.” For Mr. David Adonri, Chief Executive Officer of Highcap Securities, no one else could have been more worthy of such recognition. “UK Ekeh has done well. I remember at the time he took office, the bank faced very serious challenges, principal of which was the position of the non-performing loan which had set the bank on the part of losses,” he said. “As there were statutory provisions that had to be made, the losses that accompanied this were such that the bank could not pay dividends. In fact, within that season, the dividends that the FirstBankGroup was barely able to pay to shareholders were not coming from the bank but the subsidiaries. “It is to his credit that he has been able to complete the management of those provisions for the bad loans exposure due to the overexposure of the bank to, most notably the petroleum industry. He has successfully written off those bad debts.” Eke who spent about 19 years in the defunct Diamond Bank Plc where he rose to the position of Executive Director, seeing to the bank’s rapid growth to emerge one of the leading banks in the country within the period, eventually left for First Bank to serve as Executive Director, Public Sector, South before moving up to become the Group Managing Director, FBN Holdings Plc in January 2016. At FBN Holdings, he has continued to prove his mettle. While the holding company had ended 2015 with gross earnings of N503 billion, it moved to N583.006billion in 2016, his first year as MD. Going further, it was N598.184billion in 2017, and by 2018, it was N587.406billion and then N590.4 in 2019. In 2020, however, the impact of the pandemic caused a marginal 1.9 percent drop in the earnings to N579.4 billion. In terms of profit, Eke’s reign has also coincided with a period of rapid growth. FBN Holdings profit grew from N12.24billion in 2016 to N37.7billion in 2017, N58.23billion in 2018, N73.66billion in 2019 and N89.7 billion in 2020. https://hallmarknews.com/wp-content/plugins/phastpress/phast.php/c2VydmljZT1pbWFnZXMmc3JjPWh0dHBzJTNBJTJGJTJGaGFsbG1hcmtuZXdzLmNvbSUyRndwLWNvbnRlbnQlMkZ1cGxvYWRzJTJGMjAyMSUyRjA5JTJGaW1hZ2VzLTIwMjEtMDktMjNUMTk0MzIyLjg1Ny02NDB4NDAwLmpwZWcmY2FjaGVNYXJrZXI9MTYzMjQyODY3Mi0yMDU2NCZ0b2tlbj1iODU4Nzc3MmYyODg2ZDM1.q.jpeg UK Eke https://hallmarknews.com/top-banker-uk-eke-wins-year-2020-zik-prize/ |

The Managing Director, Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company (NMCR), Kehinde Ogundimu, says over N30billion has been spent on housing schemes in Ogun and seven states. Ogundimu said this after inspecting the Prince Court Estate, Kobape financed by the company through Gateway Mortgage Bank Limited. Ogundimu said the states, including Ogun, Lagos, and Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had accessed the fund in the last four years. He said the NMCR recently provided N1billion to over 200 Ogun civil servants to participate in the state housing scheme. He said the NMCR was ready to provide more fund for the second and other phases of the project. He said: “For us, we have done about N30billion nationwide, but we have done N1billion here in Ogun. We have done it in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun Rivers; we have done around the country. About eight states have benefited from N30billion in the last four years. We decided to partner Ogun State because of the foreclosure law that it has passed. It becomes more comfortable, but I think the most important thing is that it reduces the cost of houses. Once a state has foreclosure law, those risks are reduced, he added.” The Managing Director of Gateway Mortgage Bank, Olawale Osinsanya, said the N1billon had been disbursed to over 200 beneficiaries who have been screened and found qualified for the housing scheme. Osinsanya said the beneficiaries had 15 years to pay the debt which had 11 percent interest. The Commissioner for Housing, Jagujmolu Omoniyi, said the state the government had completed the first phase and was almost completed the second phase. https://thenationonlineng.net/abuja-eight-states-access-n30b-nmcr-facility/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime says it will help thousands of Nigerian refugees in Chad and the Niger Republic. Specifically, Sadiya Farouq, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, stated this in Abuja when a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva paid her a courtesy visit in her office. “Being the coordination agency, the Ministry has facilitated the adoption of National Policies including the IDP policy which incorporated the provisions of the Kampala Convention,” the minister stated. “The policy is an overarching framework that guides operations while ensuring a coordinated and coherent approach.” The minister added that the federal government “is presently hosting a large number of refugees from neighbouring countries, and we are working hard in collaboration with UNHCR to provide adequate protection to the refugees and the asylum seekers.” The leader of the UNHCR delegation and Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, Raouf Mazou, commended the Nigerian government for the tour of IDP camps in Maiduguri. “This visit is first, to express our solidarity. This is a difficult situation. In Borno particularly, there are close to three million internally displaced persons,” said the UNHCR boss. ”From the Humanitarian point of view, this is a very serious problem that the country is facing, which requires the support of the international communities.” Concerning the Nigerian refugees, the UNHCR official noted, “We also came to discuss with the state government of Borno on the return of some refugees. In the Niger Republic, there are 170,000 Nigerian Refugees and 16,000 in Chad. ”Some of them may want to come back to Nigeria, so how do we ensure that they can come back and what form of support systems and security needs to be in place for them to come back.” https://gazettengr.com/buhari-regime-to-repatriate-186000-nigerian-refugees-in-chad-niger-republic/ |
The UK government says it has awarded scholarships to 50 Nigerians to study in London through its Chevening Scholarship Programme. Boma Amieyeofori, Chevening Programme and Communication Officer in Nigeria, disclosed this during the pre-departure event held for 2021/2022 Chevening scholars in Lagos. Mr Amieyeofori explained that the scholars would be fully funded in their various scholarships programmes in the UK, where they would get world-class education to come back to Nigeria to make an impact. “We had over 8000 Nigerians who applied for the scholarship, and 50 scholars were selected, which includes 5 people with disabilities,” said Mr Amieyeofori. “It is extremely important that people with disabilities are selected because the UK always have them in mind, and they are top priorities in all ramifications.” She noted that Chevening had over 50,000 alumni globally, which helps in networking. Ben Llewelyn-Jones, British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, urged the scholars to take advantage of the opportunity. “I urge all the scholars to make use of this opportunity and ensure that when they are back into the country, they can impact positively and make the change that is required,” said Mr Llewelyn-Jones. John Momoh, Channels TV owner, urged the scholars use the opportunity to proffer solutions to Nigeria’s problems. “Go there and be your best and make the UK, your university, and the one year that you spend there should be used to impact your life and make it special,” said Mr Momoh. “It should also be used to fathom solutions to the problem Nigeria is facing because the country needs problem solvers, and you can be one of them.” https://gazettengr.com/uk-awards-50-nigerians-chevening-scholarships/ |

The Bauchi Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday claimed that 129 of its members in the zone were being owed salary arrears ranging from two to thirteen months by the Federal Government. The claim was made by the Bauchi Zonal Coordinator of the Union, Professor Lawal Garba Abubakar, while addressing journalists shortly after its meeting at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, ASUU secretariat. The affected members, according to the zonal coordinator, were from the University of Jos, ATBU and Federal University, Kashere. He informed that 95 lecturers from UniJos, 16 from ATBU and 18 from Federal University, Kashere were affected. He attributed the problem to the Integrated Personnel Payment System (IPPS), declaring that what the Federal Government is doing is deliberate stealing of its members’ salaries. Abubakar claimed that since the introduction of IPPIS in February 2020, ASUU members were continuously being omitted from the payments of salaries on monthly basis. “The inconsistencies observed in the application of the IPPIS in the payments of salaries, remittances of third-party deductions have continued in all the Federal Universities. “Since the introduction of IPPIS in February 2020, our members have continued to be omitted from the payments of salary on monthly basis. This is the situation across all the Federal universities in the country. “Every month when salary is paid, a different set of staff will have their names omitted from the payment for that particular month. “As we speak now, about 95 lecturers from the University of Jos are being owed salary arrears of two to 13 months. It is the same situation in ATBU,16, Bauchi and Federal University of Kashere, 18,” the Bauchi zonal coordinator said. He added that the development is deliberate victimisation of ASUU members by the IPPIS office to frustrate the UTAS payment system agreed upon by the Union and the Federal Government. “This is deliberate and amounts to the victimization of ASUU members by IPPIS Office as a ploy to force them to enrol, thereby frustrating the implementation of UTAS as agreed before the strike was suspended in 2020,” he submitted. Prof Abubakar said the Union was holding the Minister of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige, responsible for the lingering crisis in ASUU, claiming that the minister has refused to act to end the crisis due to reasons best known to him. Abubakar while demanding to know if some persons were feeding fat on consultancy and maintenance fees on IPPIS, informed that some categories of lecturers were being been forcefully retired by IPPIS He said this was being done through the abrupt stoppage of their salaries in clear violation of the Universities Miscellaneous Act of 2012. “The questions that need answers here are: Are some individuals feeding fat on the high cost of maintenance and consultancy fees on IPPIS as against the freely developed and more efficient UTAS that has taken care of the university peculiarities, in line with extant laws? Could this be the reason for the foot-dragging by FGN to deploy UTAS in the universities?” “One other disturbing trend we wish to bring to the public domain is that Professors and Readers (Associate Professors), who are supposed to retire at the age of 70 years, are now being forcefully retired by IPPIS through the abrupt stoppage of their salaries in violation of the Universities Miscellaneous Act of 2012.” While informing that salaries being paid to lecturers are not commensurate with their ranks based on the prevailing salary table, Abubakar said, “what we have been suffering is a theft on our salaries; others call it amputation.” He further claimed that lecturers’ promotions are not implemented in time, adding that even when implemented, arrears are not easily paid. The zonal coordinator also drew the attention of the public to the failure of the Federal Government to implement the Memorandum of Agreement it signed with the union in 2020. “We are pained to bring these issues to the public because more than nine months after suspending the 2020 strike, the government has again reneged on the FGN-ASUU 2020 MoA. “The union is now left with no choice than to activate its procedure of resuming the conditionally suspended strike in the event that these issues are not addressed before we conclude our internal processes.” https://dailypost.ng/2021/09/14/129-of-our-members-owed-13-months-salaries-ASUU-in-bauchi-claims/ |

Kwara state in North Central Nigeria is the latest state in the country to commence the development of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority’s Integrated Farm Estate which is aimed at achieving food security and creating job opportunities for youth and women in rural communities in Nigeria. The farm estate in Kwara is located on a 100 hectares land in Agbeyangi Community in Ilorin East Local Government Area of the state and it targeted at engaging over 2000 farmers in farming activities and animal husbandry, the estate after completion is expected to generate millions of Naira annually. The Executive Secretary of NALDA, Prince Paul Ikonne while addressing residents of the community, highlighted NALDA’s plan for the farm estate saying it would be one of the biggest in the cultivation of yam, cassava and maize and a portion of the land would be reserved for goat, rabbit and grass cutter rearing, processing and packaging. “We are here to inspect and accept officially the 100 hectares of land donated by this community for NALDA’s integrated farm estate which the president mandated us to develop in all the senatorial zones to achieve food security and create Job” “The contractor has done a very good job in clearing the provided land and the community as well is willing and ready, to be engaged in this commendable landmark of the federal government. This also has afforded us the opportunity to educate the community that this project belongs to them.” Prince Ikonne noted that the farm estate would also boast of an irrigation system that would enable all year round farming, saying the project would engage not less than 2000 people in the various sections of the farm. “This will empower the youth and women. The desire of the President is to ensure that our youths are engaged and attracted into agricultural business. Everything that is needed to start this farm is available, ” We will have all year round production. We will produce enough first for the community to have enough to eat, then it goes out to the state then to other states, the benefits are beyond the community. FARM ESTATE NOT RUGA On the fears being expressed in some quarters that the Integrated Farm Estate being established in the country is same as the infamous proposed Ruga system the NALDA boss said project is aimed at achieving food security and has nothing to do with Ruga as it is community based. “This project is not for political reason the president because of his passion wants to achieve food security before leaving office; he does not want to leave Nigeria the way he inherited it, so he wants to use agriculture to reduce unemployment. “It is something that every community that has land should key into for their benefit, you can see that the place is opening up, it can no longer be a hiding place for criminals when there is development there is hope for the people.” He said He urged communities to key into the project, saying “the project is not supposed to be used for politics or to distract people from getting involved, rather am encouraging every community to key into it like this community has keyed into it”. Ikonne noted that if a state does not show interest no matter how willing the community is to give the land, it will be difficult for Federal Government to come in. He said that with the presence of the Farm Estate in the community, it would first develop the community, create jobs for the people, increase their incomes through agriculture, and increase the GDP such that their standard of living would improve greatly. VISIT TO COMMUNITY HEAD Earlier the NALDA boss and other officials visited the palace of the traditional head, the Alangua of Agbeyangi, Aliyu Baba, to brief him of NALDA’s activities and how it would benefit the members of the community. Responding on behalf of the community, Mr Mohammed Abdulkadir said the land was donated to NALDA by Agbeyangi and Eleyode community so that can be put to use for the benefit of the community and by so doing, end poverty, unemployment, food insufficiency, disease and insecurity from the community and other communities in kwara state. He said a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed to activate the implementation process of the project. According to him, the land provided for the project is a plain terrain with rich soil with potential to access surface and subterranean water supply to galvanize all forms of agricultural practices slated for the achievement of the project’s development objective. “This community promises its cooperation with the government through the NALDA in areas of providing protection for the plant and equipment to be installed to ensure its success.” Residents of Agbeyangi Community were seen jubilation as they chant songs and dance celebrating the dawn of a new day. https://von.gov.ng/2021/09/13/kwara-joins-states-with-farm-estates-donates-100-hectares-land/ |
The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Abdulrasheed Bawa has disclosed that the commission recovered over N72.8 billion, and 30 Real Estates from corrupt Nigerians since he assumed office six months ago. According to him, since he took over the chairmanship of the anti-graft agency on March 5, 2021, the commission has recovered over N6 billion, $161 million, £13,000, €1,730, 200 Canadian dollars, CFA 373,000, ¥8,430 and 30 Real Estates. Bawa disclosed this on Friday, September 10, at the 38th Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime, organised by the Center for International Documentation on Organised and Economic Crime (CIDOEC), Jesus College, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Sambo Mayana, the EFCC boss said the agency also arrested over 1500 internet fraudsters in the period under review, many of whom are being prosecuted. At the level of the EFCC as the central agency coordinating the fight against economic crime in Nigeria, Bawa said the agency has been up front in tackling corruption with tremendous successes, noting that as at August 2021, the EFCC had made over 3408 convictions. Meanwhile, Bawa said Nigeria lost about N5.4 trillion to tax evasion by multi-national corporations operating in thecountry from 2011 to 2021, asid e from the theft of resources in the nation’s oil and gas sector. He said the country has so far spent over N6 trillion in the war against terrorism since 2008, noting that all hope was not lost as the country, under the present administration, has demonstrated commitment and political will in dealing with the issue of economic crimes through several legislative and institutional reforms. Also, Bawa called on world leaders to rise to the challenge of fighting corruption to boost the global economy and security. According to him, economic and financial crimes including corruption, which manifests in various forms in different nations, are at the foundation of global development and security challenges. Bawa said resources that could support the development of a country are lost through criminal acts like corruption, tax evasion, money laundering, and others. The EFCC chair noted that the absence of substantial improvement in the living condition of people in Africa and other developing countries, despite their rich natural resources, can be blamed on pervasive economic crimes. Citing a report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development OECD, he said, “The “spoiler” effects on countries’ development processes are diverse and particularly severe for fragile states. “Economic crime, including illicit financial flows, diverts the much-needed resources to rebuild countries’ public services, from security and justice to basic social services such as health and education. “The incidence of illegal mining, smuggling of goods, tax evasion, illegal oil bunkering, illegal arms deals just to mention but a few does not allow the government to receive the full accruals from the continent’s vast resources that are needed for development. “The revenue generated are embezzled by government officials and their collaborators in the private sector. This does not allow for economic growth and by extension a hindrance to development.” https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/efcc-recovers-over-n72-8bn-30-houses-from-corrupt-nigerians-in-six-months/ |
The court sitting for the trial of some Bureau De Change operators arrested in March 2021 for allegedly sponsoring the Boko Haram terrorism in the country has been scheduled for Friday, September 17, 2021. SaharaReporters learnt from competent court sources that the hearing will hold at Court Room 4, Federal High Court Abuja at the Federal Capital Territory. A source said, “I just confirmed their next sitting. It will be on 17th September, Court Room No 4, Federal High Court Abuja, behind the Federal Ministry of Justice. Time: 10am.” The court hearing comes six months after a letter written by the Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABDON) requested that those who are being detained by the Department of State Services be admitted on bail, pending the conclusion of the investigation. The source who spoke to SaharaReporters said the court first sat on the 18th of August but the DSS refused to come to court with the defendants. He said the lawyers of the operators requested that his clients appear in court during the next sitting which was on September 2. However, the hearing could not hold due to the ailing health of the presiding judge. The defendants, it was gathered, were not brought to the court. He noted, “The association of bureau de change operators hired a barrister for their members. They went for a court sitting and the barrister wanted the DSS to bring his clients for the next sitting. “The judge asked the DSS to bring the clients. But even during the second court sitting, the operators were absent. The DSS asked the judge to give them extra days but he said no that they already had enough time to carry out an investigation. “The hearing was scheduled for September 2 again but the DSS did not come to the court with the operators and the judge was not feeling well so it was rescheduled again.” In March, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said the Nigerian government arrested the Bureau De Change operators who were facilitating the transfer of money to Boko Haram terrorists. He had said some Nigerians transferring money to the sect from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were working with the BDC operators. “Bureaus de change are facilitating money to terrorists. We have already worked with the UAE. Convictions have been achieved of Nigerians who are transferring money to BokoHaram terrorists and this also happens domestically. And I tell you that by the time we finish this investigation, the shocking details will surprise many Nigerians,” Shehu had said. Dozens of persons have been arrested by security agents in an ongoing nationwide crackdown on suspected financiers and collaborators of Boko Haram. Those arrested are being kept in military and DSS facilities in Abuja and other places. Multiple sources said the closely guarded operation is being coordinated by Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). http://saharareporters.com/2021/09/11/court-fixes-date-trial-bureau-de-change-operators-arrested-financing-boko-haram-terrorism |
