Should the British Museum return its priceless collection of Benin Bronzes? For years, the museum has stood firm in its refusal to hand back artwork looted from the ancient kingdom of Benin, in what is now southern Nigeria. In doing so, it has defied the trend set by regional institutions in Britain, such as the university of Aberdeen.https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/should-the-british-museum-return-its-benin-bronzes-

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, said on Saturday would mount relentless pressure on security operatives to track down suspected killers of Olajide Sowore, younger brother of Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore. Olajide, an undergraduate student of Pharmacy at the Igbinedion University, Okada, was killed by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen along the Benin-Lagos highway in Okada, Edo State, on Saturday morning. The minister stated this in a condolence message to the co-convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement. He wrote: “It is quite regrettable that such a young man would be cut down in his prime by criminal elements. “I and other compatriots would be pressurising the law-enforcement agents to track down these killers without delay and bring them to justice. This, and many others around the country, must be checkmated with all arsenals at our disposal. “I urge you to take heart and remain committed to helping the nation to find a lasting solution to some of these numerous challenges.” The Edo State Police Command had in a statement said the attackers also kidnapped five people from the scene. https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/i-will-mount-pressure-on-security-agents-to-find-your-brothers-killers-keyamo-tells-sowore/ |

Ifeanyi Okechukwu typifies the assumed qualities of a Lagosian; smart, sharp and lively. Born and bred in Bariga, one of the areas in the metropolis, the 33-year-old has in time blended so well with the dynamics of Lagos life. The thought of being caught up in the web of city life hardly crossed his mind. He is always on top of his game as he navigates through the length and breadth of the coastal city. But in June last year, fate played a fast one on him after his horrific encounter with ‘one chance’ — a brisk robbery of passengers in vehicles disguising as commercial ones. That Saturday around 11am, he left home for his workplace at the Ogun State suburb in Arepo, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Hurrying to meet his resumption time at noon, Okechukwu hopped on a yellow commercial bus at a park around Motorways. Within five minutes, the 10-passenger bus was filled up and the vehicle took off without any further delay. Some two kilometres into the journey, the vehicle made a U-turn and headed towards Ikorodu Road. Before Okechukwu and other five passengers could fathom what had gone amiss, five men clustered around them suddenly and threatened them with guns. “Robbers! How come? I entered the bus from the park,” the ICT expert thought to himself. Alas, Okechukwu had indeed entered ‘one chance.’ What was more; the hoodlums were kidnappers. He stated, “It was on a Saturday afternoon. I was on my way to the office. I boarded a public bus at Motorways en route to Arepo. The bus turned by the Federal Road Safety Corps office along the road. We thought there was traffic and the driver wanted to go through Alausa to connect Berger. Instead of going through Alausa, the bus headed back towards Ikorodu Road.” The bus was speeding. Okechukwu and his co-passengers were at loss as there was no escape route at gunpoint. “We initially started shouting at the driver until two guys brought out guns and asked us to shut up. That was when we knew we had been abducted,” he revealed before taking a deep sigh. “Immediately, our eyes were covered with pieces of cloth and all we knew was that we were on a long trip until we got to a destination and we were asked to alight and taken to a bush.” The operation was in two phases, beginning with dispossession of the victims of theirllected belongings ranging from phones, laptops, wrist watches and cash. Families groan over incidents of one chance, kidnappings, missing persons in Lagos despite govt rebuttal Okechukwu stated that one of the victims dealing in a poultry business was robbed of N250,000 he wanted to use for a fresh supply of livestock and eggs. They thought they had lost all to the robbery and the gang would free them but they were wrong. The kidnappers saw Okechukwu’s identity card showing that he worked with a reputable company and made moves to demand a ransom. As a smart Lagosian that he is, Okechukwu quickly pulled up a fast one on the kidnappers. He narrated, “I told them I had resigned from the company and did not submit my ID card after I left. I told them I was using the ID card to escape police harassment on the road.” His gimmicks worked but not without a two-day harrowing stay in the bush. “We were only given sachet water to drink throughout. We were released on Monday when nobody showed up to pay a ransom,” the native of Anambra State said. Stuck in between sorrow over lost valuables and celebration of freedom, Okechukwu and other victims trudged on a long distance to the roadside; stranded. He added, “We were told by passersby that we were in the Agbara area of Ogun State. It was some motorists who gave us a free ride. It’s a terrible experience I don’t want like to remember.’’ https://punchng.com/how-one-chance-bus-landed-me-in-kidnappers-den-for-two-days-ict-expert/ |

Residents of Jos metropolis, Plateau State, on Saturday, cried out over the shortage of food items and other essential commodities in their areas following the re-imposition of 24 hours curfew in the area, Daily Trust reports. The residents also complained about the hike in prices of food items after the directive. The 24 hours curfew was re-imposed by the state government following the killing of members of the Anaguta ethnic group on Tuesday in Yelwa Zangam community of Jos North LGA. Residents who came out to look for food complained about the situation. Yakubu Busari, a resident of Janta Adamu, said people in the area were finding it very difficult to cope with the situation, saying the curfew, though important, had resulted in hardships in the area. He said, “Getting the food is problematic. Many people don’t have money because they have to go out before they can get some money to buy food. “Recharge cards are not available because many shops are not operating. “The situation may result in theft and other criminal activities within the community.” Peter Azi, a resident of Laminga, said, “The curfew is seriously affecting residents of my area in all aspects of their life. People can’t go to town to access health care services. “Food items and other essential commodities are very scarce because sellers of the items often go to the town to supply them and the town is locked.” Hamza Musa, a resident of Anguwan Rogo, said, “To me, the government by now should relax the curfew. People are hungry and should be allowed to go out and source food to eat. “When hunger becomes unbearable and people decide to go out, the government may not control people.” While calling for the lifting of the curfew, many residents urged the government to deploy security personnel at all flashpoints to protect lives and property. http://saharareporters.com/2021/08/28/24-hours-curfew-plateau-residents-decry-shortage-food-items-rising-prices |

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has threatened to penalise taxpayers in Rivers who refuse to pay their value-added tax (VAT) to the agency. Abdullahi Ahmad, the FIRS spokesman, advised in a statement on Sunday. He noted that the FIRS issued the directive following numerous inquiries after a recent judgment obtained by the Rivers government at the Port Harcourt Division of the Federal High Court. The court had on August 9 ruled that the Rivers government, not the FIRS, was the rightful authority to collect VAT. Following the judgment, Governor Nyesom Wike, on August 19, signed into law a bill that authorises the Rivers government to collect VAT in the state henceforth. The FIRS spokesperson explained that since the organisation had already appealed the judgment, seeking a stay of execution order, and that the status quo ante should subsist on VAT collection, taxpayers should continue to pay their VAT to the FIRS. “The attention of the FIRS has been drawn to the trending report that on 19/08/2021, the government of Rivers state took steps to enact a Value Added Tax Law for Rivers state following the judgment of the Federal High Court Port Harcourt Division on August 9, 2021, in suit number CS 149/2020,” stated the FIRS spokesman. The suit was about who has the constitutional duty to collect VAT and personal income tax in Rivers. “We wish to inform the general public that before the above-mentioned steps taken by the government of Rivers state, FIRS had lodged an appeal against the above judgment,” Mr Ahmad added. According to him, FIRS has also filed an application for stay of execution of the judgment “as well asking the court for an injunction pending the determination of the appeal.” The Court of Appeal has not ruled on the appeal, and the federal high court has yet to deliver a ruling on FIRS’ applications for stay of execution and injunction. Mr Ahmad urged the public to continue to comply with their VAT obligations until the appellate court resolves the matter. https://gazettengr.com/vat-firs-threatens-taxpayers-amid-face-off-with-rivers-government/ |

The arrest of a suspect, Ntuyi La is from Cross Rivers State and Mother from Cameroon, with 38 raps of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and recovery of one International Communication Equipment ‘Thuraya’, from him in Uyo, by Police Operatives of the Intelligence Response Team, formed the highpoint of the parade of 39 criminal suspects by CP Frank Mba, Force Public Relations Officer in Abuja on Monday. The Force Public Relations Officer was supported during the parade by the Commander of the Special Tactical Squad, DCP Kolo Yusuf and the new Commander of the Police IRT, DCP Tunji Disu. Also recovered from the 58-year-old suspect who was described as a Secessionist arms supplier of explosives, arms and ammunition to Cameroon Secessionists by CP Mba, were over 216 rounds of live ammunition all meant for a movement to Cameroon. The suspect claimed that he sells a carton of the explosives for #70, 000 each. Another suspect, Joseph Okala, 78 years old native of Agatu in Benue state but resides in Makurdi who was arrested in possession of two Rocket Propelled Grenade Launchers claimed one of his friends asked him to keep the weapons for him before he was arrested. Also paraded was 46 years old Zakaria Yahaya arrested by the Police Special Tactical Squad who confessed that he is the head of a gang of cybercrime crooks who goes after sim cards and phone numbers of innocent people or unsuspecting members of the public. “They engage in snatching of phones through pickpocketing. They are not interested in the phone, no matter how expensive. All they are after is the sim card. Once they get the sim card, Zakaria will reset the sim card, trace the bank account details of the person and steal the money found in the account”, the FPRO said. Asked how many people his gang had defrauded or whose account had been broken into using their stolen sim card, Zakaria said they are too numerous for him to remember adding that in one of the operations, he stole #800, 000 from an account. He said the banks that favour them, which were easier for them to break into using his resetting skills were First Bank of Nigeria and Access Bank adding that the gang so far have been operating in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Plateau and Kano states. CP Frank Mba urged phone users particularly those who had used MTN sim cards and were not loner using them, either because they travelled or are no longer comfortable with the numbers, to go recall the numbers because it is these dormant numbers they look out for and use in perpetrating the crime. Disclosing that a total of 13 AK 47 rifles, 2 RPG Launchers, 750 AK 47 live ammunition, 11 AK 47 magazines were recovered from the suspects, the FPRO said arms and ammunition recovered from criminal suspects are treated as exhibits and used for forensic evaluation. “We register them as exhibits. They are used for investigations and later for prosecution. They are used to establish cases against the suspects in a court of law. Once the cases are over, what we do with the arms and ammunition are tied to the outcome of the judgment of the court”. On the proliferation of illicit arms, CP Mba said, “The Nigeria Police Force deserves commendation for the way it has gone about mopping up of small and illicit arms and ammunition across the country. The challenges are however challenges of border control activities of arms merchants, destabilization of the Sahel region, the collapse of Libya which is making arms available to insurgents and bandits”. “But we have dismantled a lot of international arms syndicates. We will strengthen inter-agency cooperation with sister security agencies like the Custom and Nigerian Immigration Service towards checkmating arms inflow into the country. On the situation in Jos, Mba said “the Inspector General of Police on Monday deployed a Police helicopter to conduct surveillance patrols, while order assets of the force were also deployed adding, “We have been able to stabilize the situation while scores of suspects arrested are already being profiled.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/08/police-nab-78-yr-old-with-2-rocket-grenade-launchers-58-yr-old-secessionist-arms-supplier-to-cameroon-with-38-ieds/ |
