EPISODE 6
I turned on my new mattress lazily, I love it. Then, the second alarm rang. It's 6:00am and I have class by 7:00 am. I threw aside my blanket.Tinu is awake, smiling and typing on her system. I took my towel, I need to have a quick shower. 'Good morning' I said and entered the bathroom without waiting for her reply. I took cornflakes to suppress my hunger and I went for class.
PUL 101 is always a large class and it's difficult getting a seat if you are late. One of the reasons why I miss Tolu, she always keep space for me but she has gone home now. She received a call that her mother is sick. Luckily for me, I got a space to sit. I crossed my legs so that I can sit comfortably since the seat is such a small one. I almost fell someone. I quickly apologized without looking at the person's face. I know it's a guy but he didn't even move an inch or say something. He stood there arms akimbo like the mannequins found in boutiques.
'You didn't tell me you are also wicked' he said laughing. The voice sounds familiar, I was surprised with who I saw.
'Seyi!' I screamed and people turned in our direction. He moved closer and I thought he was going to hug me but he only whispered 'don't let us create a scene,we will talk after the class.' I kept smiling to myself till we finished the class. I am so happy to see him once again. I wrote few things in the class, I will make my own note later. I stood up immediately the lecturer left and clung to Seyi like a baby. He led me out of the class.
'Let's get some snacks at Rotunda' I followed him. He got some snacks and drinks, I offered to carry them but he insisted on carrying the things we bought. We walked for a while and he was going towards a direction I do not know. 'Where are we going to?' I asked. He only smiled and winked. I followed without saying anything else. He stopped beside a building and said 'have a look.' The place is really beautiful, it looks like a small garden. The flowers there are nice too, it's such a cool environment.
'How did you discover this place?'
'Don't worry about that, Just sit.'
I sat on the floor next to him.'Tell me about it, I insist'. He told me he always looks out for me in class everyday but he isn't always lucky to see me. He was just trying to take a stroll round the school on one of those boring days when he discovered this place and he promised himself to bring me here anyday he sees me . I listened to him because he has a lot to tell me, the girl who wishes to be his girl, a birthday party he attended, the guys who wants him to move with them and the list goes on and on. I smiled at something funny he said, I have some comments to make on what he said. I tried saying everything within me and I am glad he understands. I teased him about the girl who wants to be his girlfriend. He laughed, that was when I knew I can make someone laugh.
'I want to tell you something' I said.
'Go ahead'
'I miss you' I was surprised at how the words came out easily. I do not really talk to guys while growing up but he seems so different. Yes, he is different.
'I miss you more' he drew me close to himself. I love the smell of his cologne and I rested my head on his shoulder. 'But I gave you my number, why didn't you call?' The truth stared at me right in the eyes, I didn't call him. Not even once! I felt ashamed, I have been busy with academics and the devil I call a roommate that I forgot about every other thing.
'It's a long story'
'I want to hear it'
I told him everything. How rude and inhumane my roommate is. How I have been living my life away at the library just to avoid her. How I feel so lonely and odd in that room. How she had been a pain in my neck. I felt relieved the moment I told him everything, I haven't had anyone to share this with.
'Everything will be fine dear' he said hugging me tightly.

EPISODE 5
Tinu started keeping malice with me since I gave her a piece of my mind. She looks at me awfully and doesn't respond when I greet her. I am not bothered about her behavior but how can I have just a roommate and we won't be on speaking terms? When it comes to being patient, I am very good. I didn't let whatever she was doing affect me. I go on with my day to day activities, just that I haven't seen Seyi since the day we became friends. I prayed silently because I really need to see that guy.
...........................................
It was one of those days when we have tiring lectures. I feel so tired and I dragged my legs to the hostel. I knocked on the door without a response, though I could hear voices. I opened up with my key and I received the shock of my life. Tinu was on my bed with a guy atop her. They didn't even notice I entered, they were kissing and smooching. My mouth was wide agape, for that moment I forgot about Hunger and every other thing. I slammed the door so that they will know there is someone in the room with them. Tinu raised her head a bit but told the guy to continue. I was fuming with anger, which planet is this devil from! I went in search of the hall warden and I found her inspecting some of the rooms.
'Good afternoon ma'am' I said trying to hide my anger.
'Afternoon, what can I do for you?'
'I am Kemisola Kelvin.... She interrupted me by screaming like a Kid 'you mean the same Kelvin?' I nodded and went on with my complaint, I hate it when people know who I really am. I told her everything that has been happening in that room, I left no stone unturned.
She cleared her throat to speak 'My child, I understand everything you said but there's nothing I can do about it.'
'Excuse me ma'am?'
'You heard me well, her father is very influential. Both you and I will be punished if we do anything. I don't want to lose my job.'
'Change my room then'
'I'm sorry that's not possible too, there is no space anymore. Just bear with her'
'Ok ma but please change my mattress, I can't imagine sleeping on that one anymore.'
She granted my request and I managed to smile. It's really not easy living with the devil himself. She ordered a staff to carry the mattress since she knows who I am. My heart pounded against my chest as we got to my room. 'I've gotten to the battlefield again' I thought. The man changed the mattress and left with the former one. The sight of the room makes me sick. I wasn't hungry anymore, a lot was going through my mind. I decided to sleep but I wasn't even sleeping. Everything I saw isn't easy to erase from my memory. 'Who knows if they had sex when I went in search of the hall warden?' I thought as I managed to close my eyes.

EPISODE 4
I found it difficult to locate the lecture theatres after my resumption. Tolu and I got lost on various occasions. The first day I went for lecture was a bad one. I nearly walked round the whole school. Tolu had left the hostel before me and her number didn't go through.I would have called her to ask for direction.I dare not ask anybody for direction because I learnt you can be taken advantage of. They mislead Jambites,as new students are called intentionally or make jest of them. The painful part was that I got to the lecture theatre twice that day without knowing I have reached my destination. I left since it doesn't have the structure of a lecture theatre. I slept throughout the day as I was really tired. I was only lucky lectures have not started fully. I've heard stories of how cumbersome lectures can be.
I kept having issues with lecture theatres since I cannot always go out with Tolu. Then,I thought of something. I heard there's an hostel mate who is spending her third year on campus. She eventually helped me out with locating lecture theatres. We went on a walk on a Saturday morning and she tagged it 'A walk around the campus.' She showed me the various lecture theatres and the spots I need to know on campus. I laughed at myself when I discovered the silly mistakes I made while searching for lecture theatres. The one I will not forget easily is taking a bike to a walkable distance. Rather than explain to me,the man took me round the campus to make it look like a long distance. Sometimes it's fun to be a Jambite but I know I'm once beaten,so I'm twice shy.
*******************************************
Living with Tinu has been a kind of hell. She comes home with a lot of guys. They do a lot of rubbish in the room. She is always disturbing, most times she does things so that we can quarrel but do I even have her time? At least she comes to the room with four guys at a time and they talk as if they will bring the whole hostel down. I am not comfortable with it but I felt talking to her about it will make her adjust. I waited patiently for an hour after her visitors left.
'I want to talk to you about something'
'Go on' she replied chewing gum like the street girls.
'I am not saying you shouldn't have visitors but there should be a limit to everything. How will a guy be here since 4pm and just leaving by 10? I am not the type that feels comfortable when a lot of guys are around and I can't sleep when a lot of people are talking. Please, I am appealing to you.'
'I don't understand what you are saying'
I looked at her like I should slap some sense into her. I couldn't believe people like her still exist. I cautioned myself and explained everything to her. She just looked at me and didn't say anything again. I continued with the novel I was trying to read, Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, it's such an interesting book. The rest of the day was boring since I didn't hear from my friends.

EPISODE 3
'Are you going to buy something?' I heard a voice say behind me and I turned around to see a guy. He is tall and cute. He is an handsome guy with dimples. A look at him melts my heart, I only kept walking because I wouldn't want to transfer aggression to him. He followed me and kept talking, I wasn't even listening. All of sudden, he held me by my side. My eyes widened in shock.
'Excuse me, you can't touch me like that.'
'You finally talked'
'What?'
'I have been talking to you for the past fifteen minutes but you didn't even say anything'
'I'm sorry, I was absentminded.'
'It's okay.'
We sat close to the flowers and he started talking again. He told me about himself, cracked some jokes which I find funny but he didn't even laugh. He told me a lot of stories and through our discussion, I got to know he is my coursemate. He asked about me too and I told him the little I know. I really do not know myself, father had died even before I was born. Mum is the minister of Education and has everything at her disposal. Growing up wasn't really fun because I am always alone which made me to be too reserved.Mother is the only relative that I know. If mother is not at work, she would be somewhere in the country controlling her business, I do not say much things but I always have a lot going through my mind. He didn't mind that I do not have much to say and that I am not an extrovert like him. He continued talking. 'This guy must really be a talkative', I thought.
'So you think I talk too much?' he said
'No,I....
I was at loss for words. I looked at my feet because I was a little bit shy. How did he know what I was thinking?
'It's okay', he said raising up my head. 'I talked this way just because I like you. Don't see me as a talkative or someone with a loose mouth. I am only free with those I like. We are friends, right? Hi-five! He said with his palm raised and we hi-fived. Tolu came around just then holding a nylon, I heaved a sigh of relief because I have been searching for her by looking at everybody that passed by us. My new friend greeted her but her response was not really cool. Time checked, 9:55pm,he needs to leave because all guys must leave female hostels latest by 10pm.
'Kemi, I think you might need this. I will see you another time.' He slipped something into my hand and walked away. He didn't even take a second look at me. Tolu sat down and stood up immediately as if she was stung by scorpion. I guess it's because my friend just stood up from that spot. She looked pissed off.
'Have you met the guy before?' she asked.
'No, he is a new friend'
'You don't know anybody around here and you are already talking to people. How come you feel so comfortable with him? Come on, let's go to my room.' That instance, I knew she is possessive and a little bit jealous. I followed her and we talked for a while before I left for my room. Her room is just two rooms away from mine.
Tinu was asleep when I got to the room. I was glad because I am not ready for any trouble with her. I lied down on my bed trying to plan my movement for the next day. I remember I am still holding something, I checked the paper and it wasn't a flyer for tutorials like he said, he wrote his name and phone number on it. I just smiled at myself. I am so poor at communicating, I didn't even ask for his name with all the time we spent together. I picked up my phone and saved the number for future purpose.

EPISODE 2
I got to my hall of residence and did the necessary registration. It didn't take much time since the queue is not long. I struggled with my bags because there's no one to help me with them. I packed a lot of things as if I won't go home anymore. It was indicated on my hostel card that I will stay in block S. I hate hostel life but I don't have a choice since home is too far from school. I dodged the hostel registration since the first day of resumption praying silently that Mum would allow me to come from home. I got surprised when she drove me to school that morning telling me to do the registration and she left.
Azikwe hall is such a big one with cool environment. It's beautiful with different types of flowers around. I love the serene environment and I thought of sitting at a corner once in a while just to meditate. I was still admiring the environment when a young lady approached me.
'Hi, I'm Tolu.can I help you with your bag?
I simply nodded, then she took the bag. She carried it joyfully as if she had known me all her life. She said a lot of things but I wasn't even listening. I am just surprised about her generosity. She stopped in front of my block and turned around to see I was still far behind. I really hate carrying things, she rushed towards me and took the bag from me.
'So tell me, which one is your room?'
'105'
She led the way and I followed closely behind struggling with the other bag. She knocked the door and entered. She dropped the bag on the floor and came to help me with the other one. The room is too spacious for two people. Each person with her own wardrobe, kitchen cabinets and fridge. The room was decorated with blue,my best colour. I looked at the side of my bed and I found a teddy bear.My goodness, I love teddy bears! The fragrance of the room is nice, I love it. I was busy admiring my own section of the room when Tolu turned to me.
'You haven't told me your name.'
'I'm sorry, I'm Kemisola'
'Nice name. Let me step aside so that you can arrange your things. I will see you later tonight'
Tolu left and I decided to arrange my things. I can't wait to talk to my roommate because she has been sleeping since I came in. I unzipped my bag and brought out few things, then something struck my mind. My roommate's back view looks like that of someone I have seen before. I couldn't see her face and I don't want to disturb her because first impression lasts longer. I shrugged and continued arranging my things. I finished unpacking late and went to the bathroom to take my bath. My roommate is awake but her eyes are glued to her side of the wall. I didn't feel like leaving the bathroom anymore after my quick bath. The bathroom had been set up and various toiletries are put in place. I stepped out of the bathroom only to find my roommate's eyes on me.
'You again?' she murmured under her breath
I walked to my bed without saying anything. It's been a long day and I can't even imagine arguing with such a rude girl. I took out my nightgown then I heard her burst into laughter. At first I thought she was reading something on her phone, little did I realize she was laughing at me.
'What's funny?' I managed to ask
'Can't you see you wore it the wrong way?'
I took a look at myself, trying to search for what she said. I hissed when I discovered it was a joke. She came closer and I saw something in her, she looks like my grandma. I dismissed the thought, probably I was just hallucinating.
' I am Tinuade wisdom, just call me Tinu. It's my first year here too and I have been chosen to study Medical rehabilitation. What about you?'
'Kemisola Kelvin, I have been admitted to the faculty of Law.'
'That's nice, I hope our stay with each other will be a lovely one. I hope you won't be a pain in the neck. I don't tolerate stupid things. Welcome to my world.' She said stretching out her hand for an handshake. I stared at her like I just saw a sign of Lassa fever in her. I refuse to shake hands with her. She is such a proud person. I stormed out of the room in search of Tolu, though I do not know her room, that's the only thing I can do to suppress my anger at the moment.

EPISODE 1
It's such a sunny afternoon and we have been on the queue for a long time. I stood patiently under the sun hoping it will soon be my turn, I dare not leave the queue or else, someone will take my place. I feel so famished and tired. This is the fourth day of registration since I gained admission to the University. The annoying part is when you are the next person to be attended to and you hear 'sorry,we will continue from here tomorrow.' You will feel like hitting the person with a stick just to restore his factory settings.
'Next person, please' The man in blue shirt said. I don't need to look up before knowing the person that talked. His appearance is hilarious,he is round in shape with a protruding belly like an eight month pregnancy. His pair of glasses must have been gotten from another planet, it looks so thick that I am sure it can not be broken unless you smash it with something. The frame is ancient and the glasses itself looks like the old coke bottle. Everytime I see him, he is always carrying things and no matter what you say, he won't let you help him. I guess he is acting according to his name, Mr Ajagbe!
The guy in front of me moved forward and gave the necessary documents to the man. He adjusted his glasses frequently just to check out the credentials. His face beamed with a smile and I am sure the result must have been a very good one. He said something which made the guy smiled, then he beckoned on me to come forward. I adjusted my bag before climbing the stairs when a lady bumped into me. My credentials fell off my hand then I started picking them up, she stood there like I do not matter.Rather than apologize, she insulted me. I was going to give her a piece of my mind when Mr Ajagbe made a sign that I shouldn't talk. She hissed and walked away.I was so angry, Who does she think she is anyway?
I stretched out my hand to give him my documents,he told me to move closer since he wants to show me something. He only whispered 'sorry about that, she's one of the spoilt brats around. Arguing with her will only get you into trouble.' Then he raised his head up and smiled.I smiled almost immediately too, I guess he has a contagious smile. He brightened my mood.

Things started to fall apart when father lost his job. He had made mother resign some years ago, making him the only one catering for the whole responsibility. Father was a secretary at the Railway Station. My sisters had to stop schooling since we hardly feed from hand to mouth. As the only boy in the house, I offered to be a bus conductor.
Father disagreed, 'My only son can not do that' Mother cried out her eyes insisting I won't be a bus conductor. I agreed and decided to watch as events unfold. Hunger has shown us the other part of life,it takes grace to eat twice in a day. Ronke became an apprentice at the tailor's shop, Funke decided to hawk oranges and Seyi concluded she will learn hairdressing. Yet,things didn't really turn out the way we expected.
Without my father's consent, I became Ajigi's bus conductor. I go out of the house under the pretence that I am going to see my friends, give flimsy excuses or disappear into the thin air before I can be questioned on my destination. Ajigi accepted to give me 500 Naira per day, it's a whole lot of money, at least it will feed my family. I turned to a liar because I want to take care of my family. I innocently hand over 450 Naira to father almost everyday and when he asks for the source, I tell him I met a good Samaritan or come up with another lie. Mother in turn cooks delicious meal for us and we eat till we are satisfied. The reason why mother left her job is unknown to us and each time I talk about it, she changes the topic.
I finished the day's job and I was heading home when I saw father in a beer parlour. I hid behind a pillar and decided to see things for myself. Father spent extravagantly and even had a small girl beside him looking at him seductively. My anger rose, here is father living away his life while we are suffering at home. I made up my mind to give the money to mother and not father anymore. He seems irresponsible. I wore a fake smile as I entered the house. I met mother picking the beans we bought the other day, I joined her and handed over the money to her. I trust mother, she will save for the rainy day.
It was one of those days when I sat with my sisters at the backyard, gisting about the day's event. They are the only ones aware of my job as a bus conductor. Seyi just finished sharing her experience for the day and Funke was making the fire when we heard someone scream. At first, we thought it's from the next compound but it became nearer. I instructed my sisters not to move an inch and promised them to be back in a jiffy. I headed towards my parents room because it seems the noise is from there. I made to open the door but I just stood at the entrance, I decided to listen. Mother talked like someone under pressure and she wasn't so audible but Father's voice was loud enough.
'Where did you get all this money from? You think I won't find out?You have started sleeping around with men again! I stopped you from working because of your infidelity, now where did you get this from? Answer me!'He ranted without waiting for her response and descended on her. I could see them through the key hole.
Everybody knows father has insecurity issues, little did we know he stopped her from working because of that. He has never trusted mother even when it's obvious mother is a saint. She has never cheated on father, I know and she will never do that. So father has been beating her, no wonder her eyes were like overriped avocados the other day. She had told me she hit her face against something. Then, father has been the cause of our suffering. I grabbed the door handle as I was determined to save mother from him. Father has gone mad again.
