A Chinese woman survived after her car was crushed by a giant container.The woman who was driving alongside a lorry carrying the huge, orange box, which suddenly fell off the side of the lorry, flattening the top half of the car which came to a halt on the road in Zhangjiagang in the Jiangsu Province of China.
Rescuers and members of the crowd which had gathered were then astounded to hear a voice from inside the car shouting for help. They were able to cut the car open with tools and pull the woman, who had sustained no serious injuries, to safety.

Prison Break star Wentworth Miller has declined an invitation to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, saying that as a gay man he disapproves of the Russian government's crackdown on homosexuals.

Miller had been invited to appear as a guest of honor at the festival. "As a gay man, I must decline," he said.

The actor, 41, whose sexual orientation has been the subject of speculation in the past, came out in a letter he sent on Wednesday to festival organizers.

Wentworth's letter, which is posted on GLAAD's website, thanks festival organizers for an invitation but states "I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government."

"Wentworth's bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians, who are facing extreme violence and persecution: you are not alone," said a statement from GLAAD representative Wilson Cruz, who is also an actor (My So-Called Life).

Miller's announcement comes amid international condemnation of Russia's recent crackdown on homosexuals. Stringent new laws prescribe fines for people accused of spreading "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" to minors. Gay pride rallies are banned, as is the adoption of Russian-born children by same-sex couples. And foreign visitors suspected of being gay can now be detained for up to 15 days, which has raised concerns worldwide as Russia prepares to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The Maryland State Police Department, USA, yesterday confirmed the arrest of the Executive Chairman of Udim Local Government in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Nse Ntuen, for smuggling $82, 000 into the United States without declaring it with the Customs officials both in Nigeria and the US.

Nse Ntuen, was arrested on Friday by operatives of the Maryland State Police Department at the BWI International Airport, Baltimore. According to the Police, he declared only $5,000 before the rest of the money was found in his bag.


He later admitted he truly smuggled the money into the country with the aim to use it as donations at the just-concluded Annual International Convention of the Akwa Ibom Indigenes in the United States and Canada which was held at the Marriot Hotel in Washington, DC on saturday. He was later released after 5 hours in custody and the money seized.

The end to the present strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be in sight as President Goodluck Jonathan has approved N400 billion for the infrastructural development of Nigerian universities.
The document to this effect is expected to be made available today at the meeting of the presidential committee on implementation of the NEEDS assessment in the universities with the leaders of the four university-based unions – the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The President of SSANU, Samson Ugwoke, made the revelation while addressing his union members at the SSANU National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the weekend at the University of Abuja.

Ugwoke, briefing the SSANU members on the activities of the NEEDS assesment implementation committee, led by Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam. He noted that the fund was different from the N100 billion Governor Suswam had raised from donor agencies and big companies to tackle the problems of Nigerian universities in 2013.
The labour leader said: "Let me give you a tip on what the NEEDS assessment committee is doing. The president has approved that within the next four years; N400 billion would be expended in infrastructural development of Nigerian universities, to transform the universities to international standard.
"N100 billion has already been raised by Suswam committee out of which 61 universities have been pencilled down, as contained in the NEEDS assessement committee. The N100 billion is expected to address needs of the universities in the areas which include re-furbishing and renovation of lecture theatres and lecture halls, re-furbishing and renovation of laboratories/libraries and the renovation of hostels.
"The second category is building of new hostels of international standard, self-contained rooms, the latest model in the world. That is the standard to be built in every university, and also the state-of-the-art laboratories as well as classrooms, lecture theatres and the halls."
Ugwoke pointed out that the money had been shared and out of the N100 billion, N96 billion had been sent to universities.
He added: "The committee is meeting again on Monday, and by Monday (today), the document will be out. This time around, it is not only by giving university money, but it will be monitored to ensure that the money is used to transform the universities, to bail universities out of the present situation and developed to an international recognized university standard."

Because I was getting late for everything, they immediately forwarded my invitation letter and other documents to facilitate my VISA application. Can you relive your early days?

Growing up was smooth, very encouraging because my folks were very accommodating and friendly. We related as friends because my mum was close to me and there was nothing I didn’t share with her. I grew up in a Christian home on the Island, Tinubu Square precisely. The fact that where I grew up was a bit rowdy, a lot of activities would be going on, but at the same time we were on our own. It’s like a white pot in the midst of black ones. My family was very supportive during my childhood. There was nothing I told them I wanted to do that I was never encouraged.

As a youth, did it ever occur to you that you would one day become a known actress? And who was your role model then?

No, I never thought I would be an actress, not even for once. But I knew that I had passion for acting. I never thought of opting for acting as a career. In secondary school, I used to participate in school dramas. I was always being given one role or the other to interpret because of my looks and the way I talked. I was never afraid to express myself. But I honestly never knew that someday, somehow I would be a big actress that everybody would be looking forward to watching her movies. Then for who my role model was then, I could remember gluing to the TV at home watching such soap operas as ‘Behind the Cloud’, ‘Mirror in the Sun’, ‘Cock Crow at Dawn’, ‘The Palace’, to mention but a few. I had such role models as Joke Silva, Ego Boyo, Uncle Bob Manuel. These folks were fantastic. Then, I hadn’t pictured what it was to be an actress, maybe because I was shy but I really admired them.
Do you mean you were shy then?
Yes, I used to be shy and even till date I’m a very shy person. It’s hard for people to believe this but it is true. When it comes to work, I don’t know, somehow the shyness would just disappear and I would do it. But in real self, I’m a very shy person.

Can you define your style and why you chose the design of tattoo on your arm?.....

Background
My name is Anna Banner. I am 18 years old. I am the current Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria. I hail from Bayelsa State. I am the first girl but last child of my parents.
I had my secondary education in Port Harcourt last year and in the last Unified Matriculation Examinations, I scored 214 and was waiting to write post-UME. I applied to read communications at University of Port Harcourt. I worked partly at an oil company in Port-Harcourt because I didn’t want to be idle.
Support from parents
I had the support of my parents. Initially, I did not tell them about the auditions. I thought that I would not make it to the final. It was only after I scaled through the audition process that I informed them and they were happy. There were even at the finals to cheer me on.

Winning the crown
This is my first attempt at a beauty pageant. I had always wanted to participate in a pageant but I never got encouragement until a friend advised me to buy the form. I went for auditions and saw so many beautiful girls. I felt intimidated and did not even expect to make it to the grand finale. I won due to God’s grace and not because I was the prettiest or had the loudest applause. It is not because I am from Bayelsa. My victory was purely on merit.
I remain my old self
I am still Anna Banner; it is just that I am wearing a crown. Adjusting to my new status has not been easy because a lot of things are new to me. For instance, I get more calls from well wishers, my Facebook page has been bombarded by requests but in all, I am grateful to God. Sometimes, I feel I have been robbed of my privacy but I know every queen before me experienced same and I am handling it all.

He is the youngest pastor to be installed at 26 years old and is now the shortest term pastor in Mt. Salem's 109 year history.

On Saturday, Mt. Salem voted him out for attending a local Rick Ross concert.
With a vote of 11 to 3, the 14 deacons met at 11pm Saturday night to discuss and come to a conclusion that they did not need his services anymore. Rev. Wills arrived to the church the next day for Sunday morning worship service and notice his parking sign taken down and his name removed from the office door.
The deacons even asked another minister from the community to officiate the service that morning. "We cannot have our leader supporting people of this world who are tearing down the kingdom of God." said Deacon Miles Langley.
According to Deacon Langley, this is not the first time Rev. Wills has attended a concert while pastoring Mt. Salem. 9 months ago the diaconate board met with Rev. Wills when word was given to them that many youth and young adults spotted the pastor at a Lil Wayne concert.
"We know that many saints will have mixed opinions from our actions, but this is not how we do things here at Mt. Salem. We cannot have a pastor praising the world one minute then praising the Lord the next. Period" said Deacon Langley.

Last week tuesday 30 July, Policemen at Bode Thomas division of Lagos State command, arrested a woman who allegedly set her 11-year-old house maid ablaze in Surulere area of Lagos, for stealing a piece of meat from her pot of soup.

The maid identified as Ita Bassey-Eno has been at the Burns and Trauma Centre of the Gbadaga General Hospital, with doctors battling to save her life.

Although her mistress, a staff nurse at an undisclosed hospital in Surulere, Mrs Nkese Iroakazi, reportedly denied the allegation at the police station, the ailing girl was said to have managed to state that she allegedly poured kerosene on her before striking a stick of matches to set her on fire.


The incident, as gathered, occurred two satudays ago at 7, Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, after  Ita rushed out of  the apartment with fire on her, apparently in an attempt to plunge into a gutter. Unfortunately,  she reportedly fell before she could get to  the gutter.

One of the residents was said to have succeeded in putting out the fire with the aid of a fire extinguisher, before she was rushed to the hospital.

Eyewitness account

A resident who simply identified herself as Morakinyo said: “I was just alighting from the bus when I saw people gathered in front of the building. When I got there, I saw Ita whom we all call Eno on the floor. Then, the flame had been put out.

“Two men who attempted to carry her into a car could not because the skin at that time had peeled off. They had to get a slab, placed her on it and rushed her to the hospital. From what I gathered, the girl has spent barely one month in Lagos before the incident.

“She was brought from her village in Akwa Ibom State last month alongside another girl called Happiness. Since then, we have not seen either of them going to school.

“We heard that while Happiness was in the sitting room, there was a cry from Ita in the kitchen and before she (Happiness) knew what was happening, Ita rushed out of the kitchen and straight to the road shouting for help.

“How could someone who has children of her own treat another’s  like this? It was even the residents that alerted policemen who came to pick Mrs Iroakazi.”

As at tuesday last week, a doctor who spoke on condition of anonymity  expressed fear about the  victim’s condition, revealing that she suffered  95 per cent  burns.

“It will take a miracle for her to survive. In any case, we are trying all we can to ensure she gets back on her feet. That will entail some surgeries because her private part was badly damaged.

“Currently, she wears pampers and that area needs immediate surgery after the injuries would have healed.”

Ita was sighted with bandage all over her body, except her face and feet. When a nurse approached her to administer the day’s treatment, she groaned in pains.

The suspect was transferred last Tuesday to the state Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba  for further investigation.

And now unfortunately for the poor maid, the inevitable has happened to her, she died two days ago(August 1st, 2013)

A 47-year-old Nigerian man, who is believed to have been assaulted in E5 on Wednesday 10 July has now died. Shortly before 16.10hrs on that day, police came across an injured man on the pavement in Upper Clapton Road, Rossington Street, E5.

Officers attended to the man, who had suffered a serious head wound following a suspected assault. The London Ambulance Service also attended and the man was taken to the Royal London Hospital in a critical condition. His condition deteriorated and he died on Sunday 28 July at 20:00hrs. He has been named as Bakre Yesufu, 47 of Rossington Street, E5

A post-mortem examination has been conducted on Bakre Yesufu and the cause of death was given as pulmonary embolism.

Two men were arrested in connection with the investigation on 10 July and 19 July and subsequently charged.

An incident room has opened at the Homicide and Serious Crime Command at Hendon – any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call 020 8358 0300 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A ‘Kenyan socialite’ is claiming she slept with the young Nigerian singer this past weekend while he was in the country for a performance at the Bombaata Festival which also featured Nigerian artiste Ice Prince, singer Victoria Kimani and some other Kenyan acts. Staciey Brianar popularly known as Pendo is alleging she got to have a sexual encounter with the Davido hours after the concert ended, claiming to have hooked up with him at a Kenyan night club ‘Galileo’. But Davido’s manager Kamal has denied the story and explains that they were actually warned by the show’s publicist about the girl. He insists that Davido did not have any contact with Pendo.

Christian Benitez, who played for Birmingham City in the Premier League, has tragically died after suffering a heart attack. The Ecuador striker died on Monday morning after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest, less than a month after signing for Qatari club Al Jaish.
Benítez was admitted to hospital with severe stomach pain hours after making his debut against Qatar Sports Club in the Sheikh Jassem Cup but died shortly afterwards. He was 27.

Strange but true. Hell was let loose at Umualianya kindred Umumpe, Umuevu Okirika-Nweke in Ahiazu Mbaise LGA of Imo State last Monday when a man, Mr Mathias Nwoko and his female Cousin, Angela Ihuoma Anyanwu, met their untimely death while making love to each other. Sources in the community say that the late Mathias, 45, had returned home from his Onitsha base to attend the priestly ordination of his kinsman, Rev. Fr. Anayochukwu Onuoha, held at Mater Dei Cathedral, Umuahia, Abia State last Saturday June 20 2013.
It was learnt that all through the ordination ceremony, Mathias and the late Angela were literally tied to each other, with the latter taking the front seat of the former’s jeep. Their entanglement was said to have continued the next day, Sunday, during the ceremony marking the first Holy and Thanksgiving Mass at Holy Ghost Parish, Umuevu Okirika-Nweke. The deceased were also seen together at the ordination reception and later at the compound of the new priest where they were dancing to the music coming from Mathias’ car’s loudspeakers, while he occasionally was shooting gunshots from his pump action gun as Angela fed him with cartridges.


Interestingly, the deceased cousins were among family members who received prayers from the new priest, who earlier enjoined the people of the community to shun hypocrisy, atrocities and other iniquities if they must avoid God’s anger. The late Mathias who was said to have been married for 13 years without any child, however, returned home with a young girl as his fiancée who he left in the house.It was gathered that while the fiancée was home watching videos and waiting for Mathias, he only returned around 11pm and told her to go to sleep while he collected torchlight to see Angela off to her house. But that was not to be as the duo diverted to Mathias’ semi-completed building.

Worried by her daughter’s non arrival to the house, Angela’s mother called her phone line but Mathias was said to have answered the phone telling the woman that her daughter was with him. Also, alarmed by Mathias’ absence in the house up till Monday morning, his fiancée began to look for him within the house and was shocked to have stumbled on the naked but entangled bodies locked in death. She immediately alerted Mathias’ family members who could not believe their eyes. Also, Angela’s mother who was returning from Morning mass was simply speechless at the sight of the deceased.

The lady who was on top of the man had her blouse on but naked from the waist region while the man had his singlet on his neck. The two were dead.Their bodies were removed and deposited at Holy Rosary Hospital, Ogbor Nguru in Aboh Mbaise LGA. When contacted, the state police public relations officer (PPRO), Mrs Joy Elemoko, promised to call back to inform our reporter about the outcome of police investigation.

So when Nigerian Breweries’ very own premium beer brand Gulder decided to organize a mega club party known as Club Ultimate in PortHarcourt, it made sense that they also decided to take the famous Lagos party experience to Port Harcourt.

Tipped to be one of the most entertaining events to happen in 2013. Club Ultimate is scheduled to hold this Friday 26, July 2013 at the Aztech Arcum, stadium road, Port Harcourt by 10pm.


Leading the Party train of celebrities from Lagos to Port Harcourt are Channel O VJ; Denrele Edun and Dj Humility. Denrele will be lighting up the red carpet event with his amazing personality and charm. He’ll also be hosting the main event. While Dj Humility will be battling Port Harcourt’s very own Dj Kelvin for the entertainment of the guests

Part of the main highlights for the event is a series of performances by mystery guests from around the world whose identities Gulder is not yet willing to reveal to the press. Senior Brand Manager Onyeka Okoli says, “It’s a surprise. Port Harcourt city should expect more fun than they can handle”
