Politics / Rivers Crisis: Assembly Leader On The Run by mikegbali: 4:23pm On Jul 17, 2013
There is fire in the Rivers State House of Assembly and the leader, Chidi Lloyd who is incidentally one of those that ignited the fire is on the run.

But the state police commissioner, Joseph Mbu has declared him wanted in connection with last Tuesday’s crisis in the Assembly. Lloyd is being wanted in connection with his attempt on the life of his colleague, Michael Chinda.

Chinda is currently receiving treatment abroad for injuries he sustained as a result of the beatings he received from Lloyd on the floor of the House, the day some lawmakers made efforts to sack the speaker, Otelemaba Amachree.

Ironically, after he nearly killed Chinda with the mace, Lloyd was to run to a private hospital from where he told the world that he just escaped death.

All the video clips currently on display on social networks and on national television only show how Lloyd hit Chinda on the head many times with the mace. Blood oozed out freely as Lloyd pursued him and hit him the more.

It was feared that the hitting may have affected Chinder’s skull. For his actions, the police are out to prosecute Lloyd who is being accused of attempted murder. He has been on the run since July 9

Politics / Northern Governors, Soyinka Stoned At Port-Harcourt Airport by mikegbali: 5:50pm On Jul 16, 2013
Four northern governors were stoned at the Port Harcourt International Airport as they arrived the state capital for a solidarity visit on the governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

Also stoned was Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka who was also visiting the state for the umpteenth time. Incidentally, Soyinka has been a very frequent visitor to Rivers State in the recent past.

The youths who came together under the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI) may have laid ambush for the convoy and started raining stones on the convoy as they were to move out of the airport vicinity.

The affected governors are those of Niger, Babangida Aliyu, Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Jigawa State, Sule Lamido.

A member of the GDI said the youths were angry that the governors, like the others who have been visiting the state since the crisis started, were coming to take away the state’s money that would have been used for development.

According to him, the youths were also angry that Soyinka was becoming a regular guest in the state. Only recently, Soyinka was quoted as saying that the president should be held responsible if anything happened to Amaechi.

The youths said Soyinka’s frequent visits were suspicious, hence their reaction, which they said would stop more people from coming on similar visits.

Politics / Orji Kalu To Amaechi: You Can’t Win Battle Against Jonathan ..... by mikegbali: 4:40pm On Jul 16, 2013
A former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu has written to the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, urging him to retrace his steps and make haste to reconcile with the President, Goodluck Jonathan, rather than continue in a battle he cannot win.

In fact, Kalu said in the letter that Jonathan as the commander-in-chief had the capacity to ground him and make life very miserable for him.

Kalu said: “this is the time to wear your thinking cap and beat a retreat fast. There is no need squabbling with the President, because it is a battle you cannot win. The office of the President of Nigeria carries enormous powers, and when these powers are evoked it crushes anybody in its trail. You should not look at the President as a former deputy governor and vice president. Level has changed. He is now the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He has an unfathomable capacity to make life miserable for you. Forget all the noise your supporters are making: they will desert you the moment you cease to be governor. From the support you have received from the state legislature, members of the National Assembly from your state and other groups, it is certain you are liked and very popular. But that is so long you remain the governor and control tangible financial resources.

Bear in mind that the forces massed against you are formidable..Your priority should be to leave lasting legacies for which generations unborn will remember you. That being the case, you should choose between your personal interest and that of the Rivers State people.

They accuse you of harbouring a vice-presidential ambition. Though there is nothing wrong in that. Nonetheless, you should dump that if it makes some people uncomfortable. Think about your future, safety of your family and the welfare of the people of Rivers State who would be collaterally affected should anything untoward happen to you. God forbid! God has been gracious to you – raising you from grass to grace.

You had been a councilor in Port Harcourt[correction, mine],Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly during the tenure of Peter Odili as governor, and now a two-term governor. What else do you want? If it is the will of God you would be vice president or president, nobody can stop you.

They said you contested for a second term as chairman of NGF against your party’s directive. If that is true, then, it was wrong. So long you remain a PDP governor you must subject yourself to your party’s directive. If you want to do things your own way the proper thing to do is to found your own party or resign from PDP. Your suspension is a prelude to a stiffer action against you, which you may find unpalatable.

As your name ‘Chibuike’ (God is my strength) goes, all will be well with you if you hearken to the voice of reason. God will desert you the moment you fail to listen to the small still voice..Now to those that fuel the crisis in Rivers State: You should search your conscience and desist from fomenting trouble. If you love President Jonathan as you openly profess then you have a responsibility to make him succeed.

And one of the ways to attain this objective is to make peace between him and his perceived adversaries. You should, for once, bury your selfishness and work for peace in Rivers State..Let me make it very clear: the crisis in Rivers State will not lead to the victory for either President Jonathan or Governor Amaechi or their teeming supporters; rather it will end up tearing the entire nation apart, because those involved in the fight are too powerful and connected to be ignored, and their tentacles stretch to as far as Damataru and Jigawa in the north, Lagos and Ogbomosho in the west, Abakaliki and Awka in the east, and Calabar and Yenagoa in the in the south. I rest my case and pray God to intervene in his own way.

Politics / Umeh Remains APGA National Chairman-appeal Court by mikegbali: 1:47am On Jul 16, 2013
About five months after his removal by an Enugu High Court, Victor Umeh was on Monday returned to his position as national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA).

Umeh’s lead counsel, Wole Olanipekun had urged the special panel comprising Justice Paul Galinje (Chairman), Kwasami F.A. and Tom Yakubu, to set aside the judgment of the lower court, arguing that the respondent, Jude Okuli, who filed the suit had no locus to file the case abinition

According to him, the respondent was expelled from APGA before he filed the suit in the lower court, adding that he did not go to the lower court to ask for reinstatement before the trial judge reinstated him.

While noting that the lower court delivered a contradictory judgment, Olanipekun said the fact that APGA was not joined as a party could be fatal to the case and has rendered the matter incompetent.

He said the trial judge made himself a plaintiff counsel by extending the case of the respondent (Okuli) and posing questions himself and answering in favour of the respondent.

Mr Olanipekun noted that even when the judge found out that the parties in the matter sharply disagreed over affidavit evidence, he did not call for oral evidence as required by the court and went ahead to deliver judgment.

He had said that the lower court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter since it bothered on the internal affairs of a political party.

Lead counsel to the respondent, Onyechi Ikpeazu had argued that the case could not be defeated by reason of non-joinder of APGA, for the main reason that the complaint was directed to Mr Umeh, personally based on his arbitrary conduct.

Mr Ikpeazu said it wasn’t really an APGA matter but a grouse between individuals within the party, just as he contended that the appellant didn’t make the issue of locus standi the main grouse in the appeal.

Politics / Reps To Take Over Rivers Assembly....seeks Removal Of CP by mikegbali: 10:11pm On Jul 10, 2013
The House of Representatives has passed a resolution for the takeover of the affairs of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The motion followed a motion by Mr Andrew Uchendu. Uchendu's motion came following the crisis that rocked the Assembly leading to the fictionalization of the House.

If this comes to stay, it means the House of Representatives would have the duty to make laws for Rivers State.

It also means that the Rivers Assembly would not be able to do anything against the governor, Rotimi Amaechi who is currently facing the battle of his life as his party is yet to recall him from suspension.

The House had also passed a motion calling for the deployment of the police commissioner from the state.
