Nairaland / General / Don’t Use Inflammatory Language Against Government’ – Matawalle Warns Nigerians by mikkywebs(m): 10:30pm On Feb 16
Bello Matawalle, the minister of state for defence, has strongly warned Nigerians not to use derogatory words against their government.

In a statement released by the ministry's director of information and public relations, Mr. Henshaw Ogubike, Matawalle issued the warning in Abuja in light of some remarks made without caution emanating from certain regions of the nation because of the security issues there.

"These remarks are sharp and harmful, and they have the potential to heighten tensions and spark violence in our dear country," he declared.

He said that in addition to having the ability and political will, President Tinubu is working nonstop to improve and safeguard Nigeria.

The minister also listed the different measures the government had implemented to safeguard citizens' lives, liberty, and property in addition to reshaping and modernising the country's economy.

According to him, the president has prioritised citizen safety by providing the Nigerian military with the tools it needs to perform at its best. The service chiefs have also been tasked with restoring the security services' capacity.

"The president recently gave his approval for the formation of a committee comprising federal representatives and state governors to investigate, among other things, the potential for creating state police to assist in monitoring criminal activity," he continued.

Nairaland / General / President Tinubu Orders Police, SSS,NSA To Go After Food Hoarders by mikkywebs(m): 3:40pm On Feb 16
On Thursday, Nigeria Police, the State Security Service (SSS), and National Security Advisor Nuhu Ribadu were given orders by President Bola Tinubu to pursue food hoarders.

In response to the nation's rising food prices, Mr. Tinubu made this request during a meeting at the State House with 36 state governors.

"We have read reports about widespread food hoarding in some warehouses from Kano," Mr. Tinubu stated. "The Director-General of the Department of State Services, the Inspector-General of Police, and the National Security Adviser (NSA) should work closely together to ensure that security agencies in the states inspect such warehouses and take appropriate action afterward."

"We must make sure that speculators, hoarders, and rent seekers are not allowed to undermine our efforts in guaranteeing the widespread availability of food to all Nigerians," Mr. Tinubu continued.

Saying that his administration "would rather support farmers with the schemes that will make them go to the farm and grow more food for everyone in the country," the president rejected the idea of importing food.

Nigerians were forced to take to the streets last week in protests in the states of Niger, Kano, Osun, and Lagos due to skyrocketing food prices brought on by economic inflation.

The Northern Traditional Council, which is chaired by Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, issued a warning last Wednesday, stating that the nation's growing poverty, hunger, and instability may soon drive people to overthrow Mr. Tinubu's administration.

According to a market survey conducted by Peoples Gazette on Wednesday, since Mr. Tinubu took office in May 2023, inflation has driven up the cost of most food goods.

Nairaland / General / Nigeria Needs Urgent Spiritual Help To Solve Economic Hardship’ – Pastor Adeboye by mikkywebs(m): 5:18pm On Feb 12
Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, or RCCG, stated that Nigeria urgently needs spiritual help to solve its current problems.

Adeboye gave a speech in Kaduna on Sunday while visiting Uba Sani, the governor of the state.

"I'm thrilled to be here again," he murmured. When the former governor and I visited this place around two years ago, I came to pray for some of my members who had been kidnapped and had thankfully been saved. I arrived to urge their relatives to reassure them that everything will be alright.

This time, I've returned because it's becoming increasingly evident to us that the issue facing our country is not only political. We will need to find some spiritual help to our difficulties.

"As a nation, we are blessed with a wealth of resources, intelligent people, and a variety of other blessings, but we also face a great deal of challenges," he said.

Nairaland / General / Leaked! Plane Crash Which Killed Late Army Chief, Attahiru Wasn’t Accident by mikkywebs(m): 4:47pm On Feb 12
According to Major-General Danjuma Ali-Keffi, the former General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army’s 1st Division, the air mishap that claimed the lives of Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru and around ten others on May 21, 2021, was caused by an explosion that occurred in midair.

He revealed the startling assertion in a THISDAY exclusive interview.

Ali-Keffi urged President Bola Tinubu to launch a quick investigation into the regrettable tragedy, stating that the crash is directly related to those who finance terrorism.

The retired Major claims significant information regarding the incident was purposefully withheld and voiced his misgivings about the official inquiry.

Politics / President Bola Tinubu Trying To Fix Economy Buhari Destroyed – Reno Omokri by mikkywebs(m): 4:25pm On Feb 12
During his eight years in power, former President Muhammadu Buhari is accused by former presidential adviser Reno Omokri of wrecking Nigeria's economy.

Nigeria's debt had nearly doubled from 18% to 35% of GDP by the time Buhari's term ended in May 2023.

The legislator from Daura left inflation at 22.4%.

President Bola Tinubu's government has seen ongoing economic hardship, which has been exacerbated by the elimination of fuel subsidies and a volatile currency rate.

Furthermore, Reno Omokri thinks Buhari should bear the brunt of the blame because, in his words, he managed a criminal organisation rather than a government.

Monday morning, Omokri wrote, "Buhari Destroyed The Economy," in a post that he published on X. Tinubu is working to bring it back. That is the veritable truth. Because Buhari sold our oil in advance and kept the proceeds for himself, even our oil sales are now worthless to us.

This is due to the fact that he borrowed more than all previous governments put together, to the point where even China stopped lending us money due to our high debt service to revenue ratio.

Each month, $1.5 billion was used to support the exchange rate. The value of Naira was not what you saw at the time.

"Buhari misrepresented our foreign reserve status to you. Loans and purchases had been secured by such monies. To put it briefly, if Dr. Jonathan had done half of what Buhari accomplished, he would have put President Jonathan in jail. Buhari did not lead an administration. He oversaw a criminal operation that made his nephew, who had previously sold recharge cards, an overnight multibillionaire private jet pilot.

"As the opposition, we are aware of this. However, some of us are using it for political purposes because they did not win the 2023 election, and in their opinion, Nigeria must fall apart if they did not.

Nairaland / General / Food Will Become A Net Export From Nigeria – Bola Tinubu Assures Amid Hardship by mikkywebs(m): 3:57pm On Feb 12
According to President Bola Tinubu, his administration is working nonstop to turn Nigeria into a net exporter of food.

After visiting Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday, a delegation from the Global Tijaniyya Movement, led by Khalifa Muhammad Mahe Niass, revealed this in a statement. Ajuri Ngelale is the President's Special Advisor on Media and Publicity.

Through a number of programmes, including as increasing farmlands, giving farmers low-interest loans, and making large expenditures in irrigation infrastructure, he pledged to increase agricultural production.

"We are committed to furnishing hospitals with state-of-the-art equipment, training medical personnel, and guaranteeing social welfare for all citizens, which includes full health insurance coverage.

"Food will become a net export from Nigeria." We have thousands of tractors coming with us. Aggressive mechanisation will result in a significant increase in food production. As a people, we have to be productive. That is the Sunnah and what I was taught as a child," he remarked.

The assurance from President Tinubu coincides with Nigeria's skyrocketing inflation and growing cost of life. The National Bureau of Statistics reports that food inflation was 33.93 percent in the December consumer price index, while headline inflation was 28.92 percent.

Politics / Anambra 2025: Gov. Chukwuma Soludo Faces Tough Hurdles Ahead Second Term Bi by mikkywebs(m): 3:30pm On Feb 12
When elections are held later in 2025, a number of variables will come together to oppose Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, from being re-elected by the Anambra people for a second term.

Though Soludo has only been the governor of Anambra for a little over two years, politicians and opposition groups have begun expressing interest in unseating him.

Despite having the legal right to run for office a second time and the widespread belief that he won't decline it, Soludo has not yet announced his desire to do so. Most people think he'll run for re-election.

Even though Soludo is the current incumbent—a position that is considered to provide advantages—it is anticipated that he will have a very difficult time winning re-election.

This is due to the fact that elections are typically contests, rather than just the fact that he holds a prestigious position that many people envy or that Anambra has been called a "A" list state that parades people with enormous pockets of cash from private enterprise or minds full of ideas.

A portion of the obstacles will stem from the governor's miscalculations, which have earned him adversaries. This implies that in addition to people with interests and political parties that exist to win elections, there are institutions that, in general, ought to be impartial and may choose a side because they have been insulted or believe they have been offended in some way by the governor.

Politics / Tinubu Stopped Cabals, Deities From FX And Fuel Subsidy Scam - Hope Uzodinma by mikkywebs(m): 2:54pm On Jan 29
President Bola Tinubu, according to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, prevented "cabals and deities" from profiting from differences in foreign exchange and fuel subsidy payments.

According to Uzodinma, Nigerians' economic problems are the result of cabals and gods.

Speaking on Channels Television's Sunday Politics, Uzodinma claimed that foreign exchange and gasoline subsidies held the keys to the nation's sudden success.

Uzodinma claims: "I tell you, based on my research and comprehension of the nation, there are cabals and deities that need to be worshipped before dollar business can be done.

"They are the ones funding fake media, they are the ones funding oppositions to come with negative propaganda and blackmail against a very adaptable, private sector-born president who sincerely intended to make amends for the wrongs of the past.

"A group of cabals who became extremely wealthy over night benefited from the fuel subsidy that was recently removed, which was detrimental to Nigerians." In the name of subsidies, some billionaires have constructed palaces all over the world and purchased private jets.

TV/Movies / Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Stereaming Live/ Mp4 Download by mikkywebs(m): 3:46pm On Nov 10, 2022
OVERVIEW
In a bid to forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba), engages on a mission to fightto safeguage their nation from world powers' intervention during the time of King T’Challa’s death. The heroes must collectly work in union with the assistance of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) as anticipated by Wakandans who strive to embrace their next chapter.

The maiden edition of “Black Panther” movie came live sometime in February 2018, meanwhile, several things have changed since the first release. This is so for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that of the non-superheroes are compelled to inhabit.

The biggest hit and most consequential and tragic was definitely the demise of Chadwick Boseman in 2020. Chadwick Boseman performed as King T’Challa. This seemed to signal the unveiling of a franchise-defining new star.

According to the New York Times, 'before this development, the Marvel/Disney corporate strategy was shifting into a post - “Avengers” phase, as the known heroes were 'dispersed into a multiplatform multiverse of stories', many atimes formed by alternative versions of themselves. And of course, here in the real world…'

Moreso, the political sphere in the fictional African nation of Wakanda is deemed so complex.

Ryan Coofler is the director of In “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. Ryan gives his own imagination mixed with the grief by the public and coined it all into the storyline. This featured stories of family loss and group mourning and also opened into a sense of disorder which follows in the time of a unifying and charismatic leader.

Interestingly, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) as T’Challa’s mother, has assumed the throne, at least for the meantime. His younger sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright) who is the scientific prodigy, did everything to honor her brother’s memory and fill his shoes.

Though the kingdom seems vulnerable, as the outside world conspires to gain access to Wakanda’s reserves of vibranium, a rare mineral with daunting military and industrial uses. The seems to be hope for the nation.

'The benevolent global order that T’Challa led his nation into has given way to one based on deceit, subversion and exploitation.'

This interesting movie hits the cinemas November 2022.

Meanwhile, the online version of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever goes live today and testing for movie lovers.

Religion / Enough Is Enough: A Critique Of Fundraising Modalities In The Nigerian Church by mikkywebs(m): 9:35pm On Oct 02, 2022
Paper presented at the 2022 General Assembly of the Archdiocese of Abuja, Sept 23, 2022 By Rev. Fr. George Ehusani, Executive Director, Lux Terra Leadership Foundation.
After the major scandal and embarrassment that attended the unfortunate massacre of 13 worshipers inside the St. Philip's Church, Ozubulu, Anambra State, on Sunday August 6, 2017, I addressed a memorandum to the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria, pleading that they consider it a matter of priority to come up urgently with clear guidelines on what manner of fundraising can be considered suitable in our Churches, and especially within liturgical and paraliturgical settings. It was the case of a young man with no known pedigree, no known qualifications, no antecedents in business, etc; but who came back home from South Africa, throwing money around, single-handedly building a Church and dedicating it with fanfare, and no one asking any questions. It was alleged that many among the clergy and laity in that part of the country knew that the young man could not have made such stupendous wealth in any legitimate manner, and that many even knew for sure that he was a drug baron.

Yet, the Ozubulu case of an alleged drug baron who single-handedly built a Catholic Church and had it dedicated with fanfare, is not an isolated one. These days, rogue public office holders, known treasury looters, corrupt civil servants, and kidnappers, are now celebrated in our Churches, considered Pillars of the Church, decorated with Knighthood, made Patrons of pious societies, and are regularly encouraged to come up to the sanctuary, told to mount the pulpit and given the microphone to address the congregation at Sunday masses, at funeral masses, at wedding ceremonies, and at the anniversaries of priests and religious, etc., in anticipation of some donation towards our Church building or mission house projects.

These days some (so-called powerful) priests have made themselves expert fundraisers, going from diocese to diocese, getting invited across the country to preside over harvest thanksgiving and bazaar, or some other fundraising events, and it is even alleged that some of these fundraiser priests do request for a percentage of the funds theyhelp to raise - using the most unorthodox, irreverent, distasteful, if not nauseating and perhaps sacrilegious methods.

Not long ago, after reading the Gospel passage of the Widow's Mite, I shared my honest impressions with those gathered in Church about the conduct of harvest thanksgivings and bazaars, as well as the conduct of fundraising in general in our Churches these days. I told them how embarrassed and distressed I have become with all the cumbersome announcements and elaborate arrangements that precede harvest each year, whereby for many weeks or even months, precious worship and religious instruction time is expended on preparing Church members for the harvest thanksgiving and bazaar day, and the largest billboards and banners displayed in the parish are often those of the annual harvest, as if annual harvests have become the most central or the most critical liturgical celebrations of the year. In the process however, the sanctity, integrity and solemnity of the traditional Catholic liturgy are often violated, and the vanity and vainglory of the people are not only accommodated but celebrated as if they have become Christian virtues - and all these, just so that more money could be raised for God's work. Sometimes secular comedians as well as fans of such football clubs as Man United and Chelsea or AC Milan, are brought in to ginger the Church members, so they may contribute more.

Crime / Burning Of Eke Ututu: Remember, Gov. Uzodimma, Power Does Not Last Forever by mikkywebs(m): 1:45am On Sep 28, 2022
The lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has reminded the Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma that “Power is transient and does not last forever.”

Barr. Ejiofor was reacting to the burning of the ancestral market, shops and houses of the people of Orsu Ihiteukwa community in the Orsu council area of Imo state, allegedly carried out by men of the state-owned Ebubeagu Security Outfit, on Saturday night, September 17.

Ejiofor disclosed this to newsmen in Owerri, Sunday Sept. 18, while condemning the act.

He described it as an obvious crime against humanity and impoverishment of the people by destroying their economic activities.

However, he called on the international community to intervene to end the issue of insecurity and alleged destruction.

On how it happened IPOB lawyer, alleged that “Orsu-Ihiteukwa is a community in Orsu Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State. According to verifiable and credible eyewitness accounts, this hitherto peaceful community was this weekend, invaded by the combined team of Governor Hope Uzodinma's Ebubeagu Security outfit and the Nigerian Army.

“It is heart-rending that at this period of economic downturn, the only available daily market in the community, where the downtrodden go to for communal trade, in search of their daily bread was completely razed to the ground, and homes burnt by these evil monsters acting on behalf of the state Government. Indigenes of the community were thrown into this unexpected horror, and out of fear, they fled from their very own ancestral homes. Right now, Orsu-Ihiteukwa is a ghost town.

“We are asking the Governor of Imo state – could there be any justification, whatsoever, under any known law in Nigeria, as well as the international jurisprudence, that sanctioned this oppressive, barbaric, wicked, soulless and evil destruction of the lives and properties of his people that he swore to protect?

“Furthermore, if the overzealous Security Agents are in hot chase of targeted criminal elements, can't they profile and define their targets? Can this oppressive conduct occur in any other region or part of Nigeria?”

“Remember, Governor Hope Uzodimma that power is transient, it does not last forever! You must not also forget that you will give an account of your stewardship someday and one day, very certainly, before the International Criminal Court of Justice. These monumental atrocities, genocidal killing of innocent lives, destruction of properties, and obvious crimes against humanity, brazenly perpetrated and superintended under Governor Hope Uzodimma's watch with reckless abandon/impunity are extremely cruel and the evidence abounds.

Nairaland / General / Prelude To Nigeria-biafra War: Colonization by mikkywebs(m): 11:31pm On Sep 27, 2022
The British temporarily landed troops on shore but resistance was stiff. Eventually they retreated in their boats, one of which was captured by Kosoko's forces. At this point, only the HMS Victoria was still afloat. HMS Sampson and HMS Penelope in the first place were too big to manouvre in the Lagoon. HMS Victoria came under heavy fire but was eventually rescued by Lieut. Corbett, who was seriously wounded. The next day, the HMS Teaser, which was refloated, and HMS Bloodhound moved up to the area between the present Tinubu Square and the Bridge, from where they opened fire on the town. Soon the town was on fire and Kosoko fled with his fighters to Iddo Island. The total British casualties were two officers and thirteen men killed; five officers and seventy men wounded.

Akitoyi, Kosoko's rival, who had been waiting with his forces during the British attack, now entered and took possession of Lagos. Four days later on 1st of January, 1852, Akitoyi formerly signed a Treaty with Great Britain to abolish the slave trade and stop the practice of human sacrifice. Later the same 1852 Benjamin Campbell became the first Consul for the Bight of Benin and Beecroft went back to Fernando Po to supervise the Bight of Biafra. The New Consul Campbell was still faced with the rivalry and violent struggle for power between Akitoyi and Kosoko's followers. Akitoyi died in September 1853 and was succeeded by his son, Dosumu. In January, 1954, Campbell succeeded in making peace between Akotoyi and Kosoko factions: recognition of the house of Akotoyi as chiefs of Lagos and house of Kosoko as chiefs of Palma and Kekki.

Unfortunately, Dosumu who succeeded his father Akotoyi, was unable to stop the slave trade; at least, according to British assessment. The British now took a decision to annex Lagos to stop the trade permanently. On the 6th August, 1861, Dosumu signed a treaty giving the port and island of Lagos to Great Britain. It was a complete and absolute transfer; the British Consul became Governor of the Colony of Lagos, as it was called from that date. In return, Dosumu was placed on pension equivalent to what he received as revenue from trade at the Lagos port. Though the Treaty initially only referred to Lagos and its immediate bordering areas, soon neighbouring towns – Badagri, Palma, Kekki, etc – were gradually added to the Colony of Lagos. The pacified area grew gradually inland into a Protectorate of Lagos.

It is interesting to note that after the Colony of Lagos, no other part of Nigeria was declared a colony; instead they were described as 'protectorates'. What were the British up to? By definition, the inhabitants of a British 'colony' were British subjects in practically the same way as are the British themselves. On the other hand, a British 'Protectorate' was an area administered by Great Britain and defended by her. British Government would take up all responsibilities of government in a protectorate. Overall, on paper it would seem as if a Protectorate was a much looser form of ownership than a colony, but in practice there is very little difference. May be the British used the term 'Protectorate' to dilute legal obligations of the British Government to the new territories.

Southern Nigeria Protectorate
Southern Nigeria Protectorate came in phases. To under-stand the staggered accretion of territories to form this protectorate, there is need to remember that the influence of the kings and chiefs in this part of the country was highly localized, rarely extending beyond a town or a river. The British were particularly interested in the rivers as they offered the best form of transportation and communication then. As earlier mentioned, the first area to come under British Protection was Oil Rivers Protectorate which expanded to become Niger Coast Protectorate and eventually Southern Nigeria Protectorate, with administrative capital in Calabar all through.

It was typical gunboat diplomacy of the super powers all the way. They claim to come in peace, but when they fail to have their way, the guns would speak. Some of the notable historic characters that played a role in the creation of the Oil Rivers Protectorate were Chief Pebble of Bonny, King Jaja of Opobo and Chief Nana. The British recognised the capacity of rulers of the Rivers and, in fact, treated them as acting on behalf of the Consul. When such chiefs were not co-operating enough, they were usually deported. For instance, in 1854, the British Consul Beecroft estimated the value of goods and ships in the Bonny River at about £500,000. King Pebble's annual income from shipping dues and other activities was £20,000. According to Bureau of Labour Statistics consumer price index, today's prices in 2020 are 3,187% higher than average prices since 1850. By 2020 standards therefore, the annual value of trade on Bonny River was about £16 million or N8 billion. King Pebble insisted on having an upper hand on the trade which angered the British, the trading boats and other stakeholders. In January 1854, Beecroft facilitated Pebble's deposition; initially exiled to Fernando Po, courtesy of a British warship; next, sent to England to enjoy more comfort; later allowed to return to Bonny as a private person in 1861 where he lived till he died in 1866. Beecroft himself died on June 10, 1854, just about five months after deposition of Pebble.

King Jaja of Opobo (1821-1891) was also typical of the coastal chiefs who maintained a tight grip as 'middle-man' in the trade between the British and the interior. Jaja was born in Amaigbo in Igboland and was bought as slave at the age of twelve. Jaja was initially a slave in Bonny who later got his freedom and thereafter amassed enormous wealth. In 1872 he went to Opobo where he was recognised as an independent chief. Opobo, during his reign, dominated the regions lucrative palm oil trade; so much so that Opobo was hosting fourteen out of the eighteen trade houses. Jaja not only blocked the British from trading directly with the interior but also traded directly with Britain by shipping palm oil directly to Liverpool, independent of British middlemen. Before he fell out with the British, he was honoured by Queen Victoria and was given power to resolve trade disputes. His war canoes were armed with cannon and flew the Blue Ensign of England. In 1884, he signed a treaty by which he came under British Protection. This development not withstanding, Britain would still not tolerate Jaja's continued taxing of British traders.

Henry Hamilton Johnson, a British vice consul, invited Jaja for negotiations in 1887. When Jaja arrived, the British arrested him and tried him in Accra, from where they took him to meet Queen Victoria in Buckingham Palace, London. An allowance of £800 per annum was made for him in exile. Obviously not succumbing to British pressure, he was exiled to Saint Vincent in the West Indies. In 1891 Jaja was granted permission to return to Opobo, but died at sea, allegedly poisoned with a cup of tea.

In summary, between 1880 and 1885, practically all the Coast chiefs had signed treaties with the British. Further emboldened by the Berlin Act of 1885, which recognised the present coastline of Nigeria as being British, the latter in 1885 proclaimed a British Protectorate over the coastal area called 'Oil Rivers Protectorate'. The area was generally the present eastern coast of Nigeria. Benin and the area west of it towards Lagos were not part of the protectorate. Though this protectorate was proclaimed in 1885, it was only in 1891 that it came under a firm administrative structure headed by a Commissioner and Consul General who lived in Calabar. By 1893, as the Oil Rivers Protectorate expanded further inland, the name was changed to Niger Coast Protectorate.

The British persevered in pacifying more territories inland and westwards, progressing by typical gunboat diplomacy; those years, the firepower of muskets and rifles was 'everything', while the added firepower of steel cannons was 'everything else'. It would be recalled that from the 1850s, the Royal Navy had added steel jacketed cannon to her war chest, courtesy of the two inventors: William George Armstrong and Joseph Whitworth. The British could accurately bombard rebellious towns from the safety of their ships, leaving the befuddled Africans no other option than to surrender or flee destruction. Once the rebellious chiefs were captured, they were neutralised by settling them with a pension or exiling them, or both. The stories of King Nana, who controlled the Benin River, and King Overami, the Oba of Benin, were typical of what happened to varying extents during the pacification battles.

Sir Ralph Moore, acting Consul General, tried in vain to meet King Nana to stop slave trading activities. When he arrived with HMS Alecto at Nana's headquarters in Brohemie, they met with resistance from Nana's forces. Four naval ships had to bombard the town from the sea across the swamps, forcing the defenders to flee. When the British captured Brohemie, they freed 5,000 slaves. Nana escaped and surrendered in Lagos. He was deported to the Gold Coast until 1906 and died in 1916. Similarly, Brass People in 1895 attacked Niger Company in Akassa, citing several grievances. When negotiations could not resolve the conflict, the British attacked from the sea. After initial successes by the defenders, the British finally successfully bombarded and destroyed Nimbe and Fishtown.

Pacification of Benin again followed the same pattern. During this period, slave trade was not only active in Benin but there were tales of human sacrifice, especially during some festivals. Europeans were personae non gratae, totally not welcome in the Benin Kingdom. In 1892, the British Vice- Consul, Captain Gallway, signed a Treaty with Oba of Benin to stop the slave trade and come under the protection of the British crown. By 1896, none of the agreements had been fulfilled by the Oba. The Acting Consul General, Mr Phillips, decided to pay a friendly visit to the Oba to remind him of the terms of the treaty. It was the first formal visit of a British Official since the proclamation of the Protectorate over Benin. Mr Phillips' visiting team consisted of eight Europeans (six officials of the Niger Coast Protectorate and two merchants), two clerks and 230 servants and carriers. There were no armed escorts. The team landed at Ugwato, the nearest point on navigable water to Benin on 3 January, 1897. From Ugwato, against the advice of Chief Dore of Ugwato, the Phillips' team commenced the difficult march through dense forests and swamps to Benin, completely unarmed. Close to Benin, the expedition was attacked. Phillips was hit in the first wave of attack and got fatally wounded. When the attack was over, only two of the Europeans managed to escape with their wounds. All the carriers and servants were either killed or captured.

Expectedly, the Benin massacre got a commensurate response from Britain, supervised by Sir Ralph Moore, the Consul General. A naval squadron of nine ships and a hospital ship converged on the coast while a total of 1,200 men were mobilised from Calabar, the Gold Coast and even Sierra Leone. Nowhere in the archives is their record of the British assembling this number of soldiers. The Punitive Expedition was led by Rear Admiral Rawson. He captured Benin on the 18th February, 1897. The captors unveiled extensive evidence of primitive barbarism. Juju shrines were running with human blood and decomposing bodies. The Oba and his juju priests initially escaped but were subsequently captured. Those concerned directly with the massacre were tried and executed while the Oba was deported to Calabar where he died in 1914.

The pacification of Benin was the last official function of the government of the Niger Coast Protectorate. On the 1st January, 1900, the Niger Coast Protectorate became the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria. It incorporated territories administered by the Niger Company south of Idah; Lagos still remained a separate colony with its own government. This is not to say that the proclamation of the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria meant that the entire territory had been pacified. Far from it! The Aro were still alleged to be instigating conflicts and wars among their neighbours so as to 'harvest' the war captives, who were sold profitably as slaves. As the Aro ignored warnings from the colonial government, military action became inevitable. The centre of controversy was the Long Juju shrine of Aro Chukwu. In 1902, British military columns arrived from different directions and bombarded Aro Chukwu, leading to their surrender to British rule. In 1902 Lagos joined the Southern Nigeria Protectorate and the seat of government was moved from Calabar to Lagos, though Lagos continued to retain its status as a Colony with an Administrative and Legislative Council.

At this point, the only missing territory in what is today Southern Nigeria was Abeokuta. By the treaty of 1893, Sir Gilbert Carter had guaranteed the independence of the Egbas. Up till 1906, they were still independent, with a government headed by the Alake of Egba and the Egbas were in charge of the various offices instead of Europeans. The Egbas raised their own revenue and collected taxes. Eventually the people rioted in 1912 to resist what they saw as extortion by the Alake administration. In 1914 the Alake unconditionally accepted to come under the Protectorate Government. That was the last bastion of resistance in Southern Nigeria.

Education / ASUU Strike: No Sir, We're Not Resuming - IMSU Lecturers Tell Management by mikkywebs(m): 9:19am On Sep 26, 2022
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Imo State University Owerri chapter has dismissed the announcement made over the radio and newspaper on behalf of the management by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Raph Njoku-Obi, ordering staff and students back to campus to begin academic activities with effect from September 20.

Reacting to the announcement, the union Chairman in the university, Comrade Odinakachukwu Ejiogu in a press release on September 20, said that the ongoing strike is part of a national struggle for the survival of public universities in Nigeria and the welfare of their members, that ASUU-IMSU is not on 'sympathy strike' with the national body, but is part of the national struggle because they have concrete stake in the issue that are in contention.

Comrade Ejiogu said that the conditions of service as academic staff of public universities in Nigeria, were centrally agreed on and it anchored on the universal nature of the university where an academic or a professor in a state university is not different from an academic or a professor in a federal university.

"The Treasury Single Account (TSA) operational in Imo State is equivalent to the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS). As we demand the deployment of University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) in place of the discredited IPPIS, we also request that IMSU be pulled out of the TSA in Imo State", he said.

Comrade Ejiogu identified some of the local problems the union is currently facing in IMSU which the branch was mobilizing for a local strike action before the commencement of the national strike. They include, non-payment of the February 2020 staff salary, non remittance of pension deductions from May 2016 to December 2020, non-payment of some members' salaries in line with their recent promotions (2016 and 2017), undue delays in staff assessment and promotions since 2018 to present, among others. "ASUU is still on strike until the issues in contention are addressed by the government".

The ASUU-IMSU chapter threatened a local strike action by members after the national strike ends, if the IMSU management and the visitor to the university fail to address the numerous local issues before them.

Nairaland / General / ASUU Strike: FUTO Don Knocks FG …says Varsity Proliferation Fuelling Crisis by mikkywebs(m): 10:15am On Sep 25, 2022
As the industrial action embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) continued to drag amid federal government's persistent refusal to implement its agreement with the academic body, a don at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has waded into the matter with scathing remarks at Nigerian politicians.

Dr. Laz Uzoechi, lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering FUTO, expressed sadness that the federal government had not given adequate attention to the nation's universities, but only bent on massaging the back of Nigerian politicians by increasing the number of existing high institutions across the country.

“Every politician in Nigeria wants to have a university in their village,” said Dr. Uzoeshi, while baring his mind on the crisis that paralyzed academics since February 14.

“If you go to the National Assembly now, there're not less than 250 requests for federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. And our lawmakers are granting these requests.

“This is madness,” he stressed with pains, reminding that the federal government had not been able to manage the already existing institutions yet was busy creating new ones.

Reacting to the call from some quarters that universities should be self-sustained, Dr. Uzoechi, who is also ChairmanBy Pastoral Council, St. Michael's Catholic Church Amakohia Uratta Owerri, said “There's no place in the world where universities fund themselves.

“This self-sufficiency thing is an erroneous idea many people habour in Nigeria and that's the reason our government continues to act in its ugly manner.

“So, my take on this matter is simple – If you're the owner of a university, it's also right you take up the responsibility of funding and as well providing infrastructure.

“When these are done, the lecturers can now use the basic infrastructure provided to look for Research Grant that will sustain what was already provided by the institution's owner.” The don, who further buttressed his point with a picture of what he termed an unfortunate recent scenario at FUTO, where his faculty was unable to attract an international Research Grant, due to its failure to “show sufficient equipment for the job,” observed that “there's growing competition among universities in the world and each university must show credentials before the world will listen to you.

He maintained that “before one talks about self-sufficiency, there must be basic facilities on ground, which include capital projects like hostels, equipment, subventions, among others.

Asked if there were plans for ASUU to mellow down on its demands for the sake of students, Dr. Uzoechi replied by regretting the lingering strike but noted that it would be called off when the “federal government does the needful.”

He also commented on the social situation of lecturers, lamenting that lecturers were no longer relevant in the country.

“How can somebody who is being owed salary since 2009 still be relevant in the society?, he asked, adding “most of us have refused to do nonsense, hence we no longer meet our basic needs. Yet we have our families to carter for.”

Dr. Uzoechi, who was recently elected President National Alumni Association FUTO, made his feelings known penultimate Saturday at the sideline meeting of Old Students, Owerri Chapter.

Crime / Burning Of Eke Ututu Market: What Have Orsu People Done To Deserve Such Treat by mikkywebs(m): 9:56am On Sep 25, 2022
Mourning and weeping are the best terms to describe the mood of the now- deserted Orsu-Ihite Ukwa in Orsu LGA and its neigbouring communities following the military expedition and burning of their popular Eke Ututu Market Saturday September 17.

Recall that on that fateful day the Nigerian Army invaded those communities including: Awo Idemili and Orsumoghu, a border town in Ihiala LGA of Anambra State. They were said to have invaded the community with combatant vans, three helicopter gunships, two adorned in military colours and the other in a white colour hovering at very low altitude dropping bombs, supposedly to flush our criminals. It was the same community the military invaded on August 6 this year.

Addressing the press in Owerri, Wednesday September 21,the spokesperson of the community, Barr. Chidi Ibekaeme on behalf of the victims of the destruction and the leadership of Orsu-Ihite Ukwa, lamented that: “We lost everything including our youths, our homes, our heritage and our market… “It is with a deep sense of agony that we gather here today to mourn the destruction of our community Orsu-Ihite Ukwa, Orsu LGA in the light of the sustained military attacks, bombing of our communities, killings of defenseless civilians and youths, and devastation of Eke Ututu Market”.

“We have borne the pains, anguish and losses occasioned by incessant bombardment of various segments of Orsu-Ihite Ukwa by combined team of security operatives with equanimity, hoping that the hostilities would one day end”.

According to Barr. Ibekaeme, the people are predominantly farmers, craftsmen and traders whose reliance on the largest rural Market in South East Nigeria called Eke Ututu Market predate the modern Nigerian history. He said that the net worth of the Market is over N100 billion in goods and properties.

Stating the position of the community in the crisis rocking the community, he noted; “Much as we as a community do not promote, accommodate or support criminality, we take exception to the current measure being taken by the government by sending soldiers who would not isolate defenseless and unarmed youths, women, children and the aged in their fight against perceived miscreants”.

“It is a well-known fact that even in war situations world over, there are areas that are kept sacrosanct that fighting/bombing should not be extended to even if earring elements are found in such places and government knows this.”

He said that government should therefore take responsibility for all losses in human and material causality of this military invasion in Orsu LGA.

Religion / Nigeria Continues To Bleed – Archbishop Ugorji by mikkywebs(m): 11:09pm On Sep 19, 2022
Most Rev. Ugorji who is also the Archbishop of Owerri, lamented that, “The country has continued to bleed endlessly as a result of the ungodly activities of insurgents, bandits, militant herdsmen, unknown gunmen, kidnappers and trigger-happy security agents. Nowhere seems safe anymore. Homes, farmlands, markets, highways, places of worship and presbyteries have all been turned into kidnapping and killing fields.

“Innocent citizens are butchered with savagery and brazen impunity by criminals who lack a sense of the sanctity of human life.”

He stressed that the best way to guarantee security in a nation was through good governance that aimed at the common good, noting that “lack of good governance results in extreme poverty, unemployment, hardship, crime and violent conflicts.

“In these difficult times, we cannot but stress that the first responsibility any government owes its citizens is the security of their lives and property. Nigerians have the right to live in a secure and safe country. This is basic; every other thing flows from it.

“After the heavy annual budgets on yearly basis and after repeated assurances by government that it is on top of the matter, our country remains plagued by insecurity. This is a shame.”

On migration of Nigerians and concomitant brain drain facing the country, Archbishop Ugorji said: “The rising insecurity and worsening economic situation in the country are resulting in migration and brain drain.”

Crime / Fulani Terrorists Not IPOB/ESN by mikkywebs(m): 10:38pm On Sep 19, 2022
As far as we know, insecurity is still a major problem in the South East and elsewhere in Nigeria. So far, we have not seen the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. But at a press conference in Abuja, Monday, Chief of Defense Staff, Bashir Magashi, told us that the worst is over. He said “Peace and security are gradually returning to the land!” But we are not convinced. We recall that Boko Haram was said to have been “technically defeated,” some years ago yet it waxed stronger in the North East. Now that it is clear that ISIS/ISWAP and Boko Haram are partners, the army needs to do more, perhaps free all those in captivity including school children, the remaining Chibok girls and Lear Shuaibu - to convince Nigerians that the worst is over.

Nevertheless, we congratulate Magashi and his team for the much they have achieved, including “neutralizing 66 terrorists,” recently. But it is not yet Uhuru! At the press conference, Magashi said Nigeria's insecurity consisted of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping in the Northeast/Northwest, cultism, armed robbery and sundry crimes in the Southwest and Separatist violence and Crude Oil theft in South East/South South. He said also that the biggest security challenge in the Southeast was IPOB and ESN. We beg to differ.

It is insensitive to reduce the security problems of the South East and South-South to Separatist Violence and Crude Oil theft. The powers that be have totally ignored the kidnappings and the onslaught of terrorist Fulani herdsmen on our farmers, travelers and communities. Whether or not the Federal Government likes to hear it, our people know who is attacking us. The biggest security threat to the South East is terrorist Fulani kidnappers who want our land, as they have often told their victims and whose criminality has surpassed those of local criminals. They are killing and kidnapping priests, students, waylaying private and commercial vehicles and abducting people for ransom.

Those who secured their freedom after paying ransom have testified that their captors were Fulani. We must not forget the testimony of the Methodist Bishops kidnapped at Lokpanata along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Express Way some months ago, who regained freedom after paying N100 million. The Fulani terrorists told the bishops they use the ransom to buy weapons and would occupy the South in due course. How come these things are not investigated? There have been other incidents since then yet no Fulani has been arrested. Every crime is blamed on IPOB/ ESN. We are not excusing them but we smell a rat!

We are aware of raids being conducted in the forests and bushes of Izombe, Orsu, and environs to smoke out ESN/IPOB. No such thing is being done around the Owerri-Okigwe axis, Owerri–Enugu, Lokpanta, haven of the Fulani kidnappers. Recently, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, alleged that armed Fulani herdsmen cannot be brought to book for violent attacks on agrarian communities across the country because the Federal Government had given orders prohibiting such. The Presidency denied it, accusing Ortom of spreading a “divisive lie”. If Ortom is lying and those released on ransom in the South East are also lying; our question is what is the truth Mr. President?

Religion / Catholic Bishops Lift Suspension On Knights Of St. John International by mikkywebs(m): 7:55pm On Sep 19, 2022
Catholic bishops of Nigeria, on Tuesday September 13 lifted the suspension placed on the activities of Knights of St. John International (KSJI) since February 16 this year.

This cheering news to the members of the Order was contained in a letter dated September 13, 2022 and signed by the President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, Archbishop of Owerri and Secretary, Most Rev. Donatus Ogun, Bishop of Uromi.

The decision of CBCN to lift the seven-month suspension took place during the 2nd Plenary Meeting of the bishops held at the Sacred Heart Pastoral Centre Orlu from Thursday 08/09/22 to Thursday 15/9/22.

The letter addressed to all members of the Knights of St. John International and their Ladies reads in part:

“You will recall that on 16 February 2022, we, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), suspended the activities of the Order of the Knights of St. John International (KSJI) as a Catholic Organization in Nigeria for its failure to comply with our 10-point directives issued at Enugu on 26 August 2021 as a way of resolving the lingering crisis in the Order.

“Considering that the KSJI has now complied with those directives, we hereby lift the suspension and beseech you to fully implement the agreements that have facilitated the much-desired peace process.

“Whilst commending you to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, we earnestly urge you to shun the spirit of division and rancour so as to strengthen the bond of love that holds you together as a family and members of the body of Christ.”

Reacting to the news of the lifting of the suspension on KSJI, the Grand President of the Owerri Grand Commandery of the Ancient and Noble Order, Brg-Gen (Noble) Moses Ajeka on behalf of members expressed gratitude to God and to the CBCN.

He called on Knights and Ladies to be focused on living exemplary Christian life. The Grand President made his feelings known when he was addressing an emergency meeting of Grand elected officers, worthy presidents, district and regimental commanders at the KSJI complex Owerri on Thursday.

He stated that wherever people gather, whether in the family, village or community there is bound to be misunderstanding from time to time. But what matters is the ability to forgive and forget.

In her remarks at the occasion, the Grand Respected President, Noble Sr. Patricia Obi emphasized on the need to learn the necessary lessons from what happened so as to avoid a repeat and to rebuild the Order's good image by looking inwards to x-ray and address those acts of commissions and omissions.

Religion / Toddler Steals Spotlight From Govt House Choir by mikkywebs(m): 7:44pm On Sep 19, 2022
Little Jaedon Chukwunonso, grandson of Imo State Deputy Governor, Prof. Placid Njoku drew a pleasant stir on Sunday August 21, when he was sighted conducting adult choir at the Imo State Government House Chapel at a Eucharistic celebration presided by Rev. Fr. Dr. Gilbert Alaribe, Chaplain of the Catholic worship centre.

It was a normal adult Sunday Mass and Chukwunonso's grandparents, Imo Deputy Governor and wife, Mrs. Bola Njoku were present as well as a couple of other top government officials.

The Chapel Choir, comprising male and female young adults had started well, animating the Mass with a series of soul-lifting liturgical renditions, conducted interchangeably by three adult choir masters.

This was the trajectory up until the prayer of the faithful, when the about six-year-old Master Chukwunonso mounted the choir podium with gusto and mesmerized the congregation, particularly new worshippers, as “Hear our humble prayer” was sung.

Elated by the adult-like performance, The Leader cornered the Chaplain after Mass, who disclosed the identity of the “Special Choir Master.”

According to him, “Chukwunonso is a member of our Chapel Choir and he enjoys singing and conducting at Mass.

“He's not the only toddler in our Choir though,” the priest stated, adding “there're also others at his level.

“They instill happiness in our minds each time we see them in action,” the Chaplain stressed.

Fr. Alaribe had earlier at the Mass reflected on day's gospel, where he referenced the “narrow door,” as spoken by Christ.

Noting that the scripture is dotted with the imagery of “the door”, the chaplain cited how Church of Nativity in Jerusalem was built with miniature entrance, saying “even till this day, whoever makes use of the door must however stoop low.”

While contextualizing his homily, Fr. Alaribe, opined that “doors do not only signify opportunities in life, but also can mean barriers.”

He called on the faithful to strive and make good use of (doors) opportunities at their disposal, clarifying “even when God open doors, it does not mean that these does will be problem-free.”
