Many Audi owners complain about drivability problems with the CVT transmission specially after a repair work was performed. The transmission still not drives perfect. there are very few garages or transmission shops that are experienced with the CVTs. To many shops and people work on the CVT transmissions and don't understand the concept of it or not even have the proper tools to work on it. Servicing and rebuilding this units requires special tools.

The Maine difference between the Audi CVT-transmission and many other CVTs is, the Audi cvt have NO torque converter. CVTs without a torque converter are typically driven through a dual mass flywheel or a torsional damper plate that connects the crankshaft to the input shaft. The BMW Mini Cooper VTlF, the Audi A6/8 01J and Honda Civic CVTs are examples of this design. To prevent a stalling condition when the transmission is placed in gear or when it comes to a stop in gear, a clutch inside the transmission must release. The VTlF and 01J CVTs release the forward or reverse clutch, while the Honda Civic CVT releases a start clutch in both Drive and Reverse. These clutches are pulsed on and off very frequently and are susceptible to failure. This can cause a variety of complaints, such as chatter on takeoff, sudden slipping or neutralizing conditions, unusual idle fluctuations or a loss of hill-hold function.

Audi offers an update package that increases the forward clutch from six frictions to a seven-friction stack-up, but it must be accompanied by a computer reflash that changes pressure and apply strategies. If the reflash is not performed, the updated clutch pack will be damaged in fairly short order.

Relearn procedures are very important on CVTs that substitute a clutch inside the transmission for a torque converter. If relearn procedures are not performed after any repairs, drivability problems and transmission failures will absolutely occur. Be aware that these procedures exist and that they must be performed.

Audi not only has a clutch relearn procedure, but also a special procedure for changing the fluid. All four wheels must be off the ground a minimum of 8 in., and each wheel must be able to be rotated freely by hand. While observing the Tiptronic indicator, step-shift the CVT from its lowest ratio to its highest (six or seven speeds), accelerating moderately after each shift but never exceeding 35 mph. Shift the transmission back down to 1st gear and gently apply the brake until the wheels come to a stop. Once the wheels are stopped, place the transmission in Reverse, release the brake and moderately depress the accelerator to a Reverse gear speed of 12 mph. Once again, gently apply the brakes until the wheels come to a stop. Return the selector lever to Drive and repeat these steps five more times. When completed, place the selector lever in Park and turn the engine off. Now you can change the transmission fluid. When you're done, repeat these procedures before placing the vehicle on the ground and doing a road test.

CVT Audi Multitronic Transmission

The most calls for help we receive is from shops or mechanics after the worked on the cvt transmission.
It is a complain of " hesitation in the accelerator process"
here bear in mind after a repair an Adaptation or learning process has to be performed. The hesitation on the acceleration is the reason that the clutch values from the computer are not recognized and have to be relearned, you perform this process in the time you test drive the car and activate the brakes and simulate a Torque of 15 Nm on the clutch. Also many Audi owners with the CVT Multitronic transmission calling for help the experience some problems when the Car comes to a stop, the car shakes and hesitates and seems Not to respond to the accelerating pedal anymore !
The problem only exist in the D or S gear selection.
Way? Because this problem cannot occur in the Tip selection, because here the unit shifts earlier in the first gear!
In selector position D or R the Rpm doesn't rise up anymore and the car won't move at all, he is NOT responding to any accelerator pedal.
After one drive cycle, this means, one turning of ignition and turned on again, the car resets itself and will drive again.

The dirty oil with particles in the oil cause a sticky valve body with hydraulic malfunction. Instead of a smooth movement of the reaction valve, a high pressure rises up on the sticky reaction valve and forces the valve to close with a bang shortly before the car comes to a stop and should shift in the first gear, but he doesn't !

It is Important to check your transmission fluid, if you have metal particles in your oil, in the size of one millimeter or more, save your time and money, you need to replace your transmission. If the oil has a burnt smell, it is likely that your frictions are damaged and need to be replaced with a new filter, oil etc,

To find out now, if your Valve body or something else is the problem in your transmission, let me give you the following hints, this is more for the professional mechanics with the proper tools.
Before the test drive, read out the value Block 65, write down these values and then turn off and on the ignition and perform a test drive with a minimum of twenty stop and go cycles (really stop to "0". Read out again the Value block 65. If the result is smaller or 0 at on the first reading, you have no problems on your valve body,-is it higher you need to replace your valve body.
The value Block 65 counts the reaction of the safety valve (SIV) by known hydraulic malfunctions, to reduce the clutch pressure in the shortest time. After too many counts, you have to reset the computer (value Block 65). For this reason you have to cycle your ignition on and off. By the earlier CVT transmission to 2003 after this year a new valve body design with self flush capability is designed.

Some Audi owners with the CVT Multitronic transmission experience some problems when the Car comes to a stop, the car shakes and hesitates and seems Not to respond to the accelerating pedal anymore !

For cars after 2003 with the new design valve body for the CVT transmission, the computer tracks the value block 65 and resets itself when you will and he activates a self flushing process and cleans the whole valve body by itself. A successfull cleaning is stored in the value block 65 he counts all cycles. This is too complex to explain here, look in our help section.
