A resurfaced video of the late Ooni of Ife, Alayeluwa Oba Okunade Sijuwade, has stirred renewed conversations about traditional authority in Yorubaland. In the footage, the monarch boldly declared that his throne was superior to that of the Alaafin of Oyo, stressing that even the Oba of Benin ranked higher than the Alaafin.


In the clip, Oba Sijuwade is seen addressing guests in his palace, where he referenced colonial documents and historical records, including remarks by Governor Sir Hugh Clifford and a Federal Government Gazette of 1904, which, according to him, confirmed his claims

The monarch criticized Reverend Samuel Johnson’s account of Yoruba history, describing it as misleading and biased in favor of Oyo royalty.

“The Oba of Benin is superior to Alaafin. I will provide you with all the necessary pictures as proof; you can take them away. You can hear him (late Oba Adeyemi) saying Oranyan, he was wrong. Oranmiyan is the correct pronunciation. He was tricky; there was nothing like that,” Oba Sijuwade stated.

He further said: “On Samuel Johnson’s book, the Nigeria governor in 1924, when the Prince of Wales was visiting, said Johnson’s book is fake. He said Johnson was an Oyonman who wrote a book to boost the ego of his people. Yes, it is in the archives. I will provide supporting documents. Alaafin is nowhere around Ooni at all. A Federal Government Gazette of February 28, 1903, revealed that when the Governor of Nigeria invited my grandfather, the Ooni, to settle rifts among kings in Lagos, it was because the Ooni was the owner of the crown and the only legal authority to speak on it. Ooni told the governor that none of his predecessors had ever travelled out of their palace.”

Lagos-based popular socialite, Olaseni Johnson Olayinika, popularly known as Abu Abel, has been arrested by the police over his alleged involvement in a ₦447 million (four hundred and forty-seven million naira) land scam.

Abu Abel was arrested by operatives of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Alagbon, led by CSP Taiwo Oyewole, on the orders of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Margaret Ochalla.

The popular socialite, who had reportedly been on the run for several weeks, was arrested at a residence in Victoria Island, where he had allegedly gone into hiding to avoid arrest and frustrate ongoing police investigations.

According to police sources, the arrest followed a petition filed by Doyin Investment Group of Companies, alleging that the suspect fraudulently sold them three plots of land situated at Augustina Orji Street, within Ojomu Chieftaincy Family land, Oke-Arin Village, Mayegun, in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos.

The company, through its lawyers, claimed that in 2023, the suspect falsely represented himself as the legitimate owner of Plots 1, 4, and 10, measuring about 1,800.311 square metres, and convinced them to pay ₦447 million for the property. A Deed of Assignment was duly executed between both parties.

However, following the transaction, the company discovered that the land was already encumbered and subject to a third-party claim.

When confronted, the suspect admitted he was aware of the issue and promised to refund the payment.

He began making partial payments and refunded ₦230 million in total before defaulting on the outstanding balance of ₦217 million.

According to the petition, the suspect became evasive and began threatening officials of the company.

On January 11, 2024, the suspect signed a written undertaking, pledging to repay the balance or forfeit his property at Block C, Plot 22, Oba Amusa Adebambo Avenue, Lekki, in the event of a default.

Despite this, he failed to honour his promise of repayment and instead filed a fundamental human rights enforcement suit, which police authorities described as a ploy to obstruct justice.

Following weeks of coordinated intelligence gathering, the FCID Annex Alagbon Tactical Team traced the suspect to a hideout in Victoria Island, where he was arrested without resistance.

House of Representatives Mourns the Passing of Deputy Chief Whip, Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga

Abuja-FCT | Wednesday, January 15, 2025 – It is with profound sorrow that the House of Representatives announces the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, who, until her demise, served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State. She passed away earlier today, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.

Representative Onanuga, born on December 2, 1965, was a dedicated public servant, a visionary leader, and a passionate advocate for her constituents. She was first elected to the House in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During that tenure, she served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly, where she championed policies to empower women and advance social welfare.

Re-elected in 2023, she was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, a role in which she demonstrated exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to legislative discipline, particularly during parliamentary sittings.

Affectionately known as ‘ _Ijaya_,’ Rep. Onanuga’s intellect, passion, humility, and drive for excellence earned her admiration among her colleagues and constituents alike. Her impactful contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape reflected her passion for creating a better society and her tireless dedication to public service.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, associates, the Government and People of Ogun State - particularly the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency - and the entire membership of the National Assembly. On Friday, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde approved the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.

Makinde communicated the approval to the general public via Dotun Oyelade, the state’s commissioner for information and orientation.

Owoade succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi who died on April 22, 2022, aged 83.

Interestingly, the announcement came a day after five kingmakers in Oyo Town rejected a directive issued by the governor to initiate a fresh selection process for the Alaafin of Oyo throne.
