Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he was shocked over calls for the 2019/20 Premier League season to be made null and void due to the coronavirus pandemic.

West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady first came up with the idea of the Season being declared null and void which would strike off all of the season’s results, goals and points from the record – barely 24 hours after the league was halted back in March.

And commenting on reports about cancelling the Season, Klopp in a chat at a remote talk for German football’s DFB Academy, via Goal.com: “There was talk that people wanted to declare the season null and void. So you thought: ‘Huh? We have played 76 percent of the season and you just want to delete the thing?’.

“That would have been something that I personally would find unfair, to just say that it didn’t happen.

“We are first in the home table, we are first in the away table. It is a season in which we should become champions.

“Dealing with the crisis is the most important thing. But that doesn’t mean that certain things are of no importance at all just because they are less important.

“I think there are worse things in life than not becoming champions. A lot of people around us have big problems. People die, it always happens, but at the moment because of a virus that we all didn’t know and for which nobody could be prepared.

“We cannot prepare for everything, but also have to react often. That’s the biggest part of my life, reacting to things that I didn’t expect.”

On Monday the Premier League clubs approve stage 1 of Project Restart, with Liverpool returning to training in small groups from Wednesday.

Klopp thinks that talk of a resumption is natural, and believes Premier League training grounds will be safe environments.

Klopp continued: “People say: ‘How can you think about football, in moments when people are dying out there?’ Nobody does that, but like every other branch of business, we have to prepare for the time afterwards, because it will come of course.

“When it comes to football, that means that we will start training at some point and to make sure everyone is safe, unique measures are taken.

“As they were made in Germany, they are now being taken in England.

“The training centres of the English professional clubs will be the safest. There are no places to be infected at all.”

Odion Ighalo wants to finish his career at Manchester United, according to the forward’s personal trainer.

United are allegedly seeking to extend his stay at the club with the forward due to return to Shanghai Shenhua at the end of this month.

“He’s a wonderful athlete, I’ve never seen someone more passionate about their job than him,” Ighalo’s trainer, Ekemini Ekerette told Goal.

“I think he’s in excellent physical condition. He loves the game. He just wants to train. Even if the league wasn’t going to played in the next three months he would keep training every day. He is so disciplined.

“His future was not making a difference to his intensity in training. He is just always focused on making sure he’s doing what he needs to do and then pushing himself even further.

“He’s a team player and has been talking about [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial, [Mason] Greenwood, and how fantastic they all are, so he’s looking forward to hopefully getting to play with Rashford. He wants to stay and loves United, Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and the fans and he would love to be a Red for the rest of his life.”
