Nairaland / General / Are Fibroids Really More In African Women??? by MIsurgical(f): 11:36am On Oct 21, 2021
Uterine fibroids are benign lumps that grow on the uterus. Symptoms may include heavy periods, cramping, painful sex, and an urge to urinate. Treatment options include hysterectomy, embolization, and hormone therapy.
Uterine fibroids, which your doctor may call leiomyomas or myomas, are muscular tumors that can grow on your uterus. They rarely turn into cancer, and if you get them it doesn’t mean you’re more likely to get uterine cancer.

Fibroids can vary a lot in size, shape, and location. They can show up in your uterus, uterine wall, or on its surface. They can also attach to your uterus by a stalk- or stem-like structure.
Uterine fibroids usually appear in women of childbearing age -- generally between 30-40 years old, but they can show up at any age. They’re more common in African-American women than in white women, and they also tend to show up earlier and grow quicker in African-American women. Doctors don’t know why that is.

Risk Factors of Uterine Fibroids
A few things can raise your chances of developing uterine fibroids, such as:
1. Age
2. Race
3. Getting your period at a young age
4. Birth control use
5. Vitamin D deficiency
6. Eating too much red meat and not enough green vegetables, fruit, or dairy
7. Alcohol
8. Family history
You’re more likely to get fibroids if your mom or sister has had them.

Nairaland / General / What Causes Fluid In Uterus?? by MIsurgical(f): 1:42pm On Aug 30, 2021
The cause of fluid accumulation in the uterine cavity is age-related.
In premenopausal women, fluid accumulation in the uterus is often associated with pregnancy, if not its complications.
As a woman ages, her cervix is more prone to cervical stenosis.

*Menopause
Women found to have intra-uterine fluid accumulation are already experiencing menopause.
Previous Endometrial Ablations
A history of endometrial ablations can cause the cervical opening to become stenosed.

*Fibroids or Tumors
The presence of fibroid or benign tumors in the uterine wall has also been found to cause constriction of the cervical opening.
Foreign body-like intrauterine devices, meant to control pregnancy, may get infected and result in the accumulation of fluid in the uterus.

Health / Fibroids by MIsurgical(f): 3:29pm On Jun 15, 2021
Uterine fibroids are often described based upon their location within the uterus.

Subserosal fibroids are located beneath the serosa (the lining membrane on the outside of the uterus), it extends beyond the wall of the womb and grow within the outside surface of the uterus tissue layer or may be attached to the outside surface by a pedicle.
Submucosal (submucous) fibroids are located inside the uterine cavity found in the muscle beneath the inner lining of the uterus wall.
Intramural fibroids are the most common type, located within the muscular wall of the uterus/womb.
Pedunculated fibroids grow on a stalk of tissue known as a pedicle (like a mushroom), it extends inside or outside of the uterus cavity.
Symptoms

Once a fibroid develops, it can continue to grow until menopause. After menopause, the estrogen levels fall, which makes the fibroid shrink in size gradually. Most fibroids produce no symptoms. Fibroids are often found during a regular pelvic examination.

When women do experience symptoms, the most common are the following:

-painful periods, increase in menstrual bleeding known as menorrhagia, sometimes with blood clots
-anemia as a result of increase in menstrual bleeding
-pressure on the rectum, resulting in constipation
-pelvic pressure, lower abdominal pain
-lower backache or leg pain
-pain during intercourse, known as dyspareunia
-pressure on the bladder, which may cause frequent urination
-pregnancy/labour problems
-constipation
-discomfort in the lower abdomen (feeling full) especially in the case of large fibroids
-infertility issues
-multiple miscarriages
-If fibroids are large, there may also be weight gain and swelling in the lower abdomen.

Fibroids are treated in many ways. They can be treated by medications and by surgery. The removal of fibroids (myomectomy) can be done by laparoscopic surgery where we remove the fibroids through small incisions on the abdomen. Fibroids can also be removed hysteroscopically, where the submucosal fibroids are removed through the vagina without making any incisions on the abdomen.

Health / STDs by MIsurgical(f): 3:19pm On Jun 15, 2021
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are spread via sexual contact or exposure to bodily fluids. Some examples of STD’s like gonorrhea, chlamydia can be treated with simple antibiotics while STDs like HIV or hepatitis C are more chronic in nature.

STD symptoms are usually vaginal or penile discharge, abdominal or pelvic pain, redness, fevers, or chills. There are tests to screen for STDs which involve either giving blood or urine or doing a vaginal or penile swab. We recommend young adults get screened for all STDs at least once before a new relationship or marriage. We will be happy to speak to you in more detail on this topic. Health / Vaginal Discharge And Its Causes. by MIsurgical(f): 2:32pm On Jun 02, 2021
Vaginal discharge usually begins around the time a girl gets her first period. It can start up to six months before you have your first period starts in adolescence, then it stops after menopause.
Vaginal discharge serves as an important factor(s) in the system, as the body undergoes many hormonal changes, menstrual cycle, pregnancy, infections.
Vaginal discharge is a clear or whitish fluid that comes out of the vagina, depending on the time in your menstrual cycle. Discharge is perfectly normal most time, but changes occur in the amount, consistency, color or smell which could indicate an infection or other problem.
Fluid made by glands inside the vagina, uterus, and cervix carries away dead cells and bacteria in a woman’s body. This keeps the vagina clean and helps prevent infection.
The vaginal discharge gets thicker during (ovulation) in the menstrual cycle, during breastfeeding, or during sexual arousal
Signs and symptoms of vaginal infections include.
The vaginal discharge becomes abnormal when there are changes from its consistency of fluid, discharge texture, color, smell, or if you have other symptoms in your vaginal area such as vaginal itching, swelling, burning, itching, or pain which possibly may be a sign that you have an infection, a sexually transmitted disease (STD), or other health conditions that includes:
• Vaginitis
• Yeast infection
• Trichomoniasis
• Gonorrhea
• Chlamydia
• Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
• Yeast infection
• Vaginal Bleeding
• Vaginal Dryness
• Bacterial vaginosis or candidiasis which can lead to changes in discharge appearance.

Other causes of vaginal discharge
Many things can disturb the balance of a healthy vagina, including:
• Douching
• Feminine hygiene sprays or deodorants
• Foreign Body (Tampon)
• Hormonal Changes
• Antibiotics
• Bacteria in the vagina
• Diabetes mellitus
• Pregnancy
• Infections
• Cervical Polyps
• Cervicitis
• Chemicals found in certain soaps or bubble baths, detergents, softeners, ointments, body or inner creams and contraceptives which may irritate the skin in the vagina area.

Health / Blockage Of Fallopian Tubes,symptoms,causes,diagnosis,treatment & Possibilities by MIsurgical(f): 1:22pm On May 26, 2021
Fallopian tubes are muscular finger-like structures in female reproductive organs that connect the ovaries and the uterus as it processes the movement of an egg from the ovaries to the womb (uterus) and the sperm for growth or maturity.
However, the fallopian tubes play a major role in the process of conception. If an egg or multiple eggs is fertilized by sperm, it moves through the fallopian tube to the uterus for implantation.
If a fallopian tube is blocked also known as tubal occlusion, it prevents the passage of the sperm to get to the eggs for fertilization in the uterus. This can occur on one or both sides of the tubes and is one possible cause of female infertility.
Common reasons for blocked fallopian tubes include scar tissue, infection, and pelvic adhesions.

Symptoms of blocked fallopian tubes
Blocked fallopian tubes do not often present cause or symptoms other than having difficulty in conceiving. Many women do not know they have blocked tubes until when the find it difficult in conceiving within a year or more.
A blocked fallopian tube may cause some women to experience symptoms.
For example, endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease, which may cause painful-heavy menstruation, painful sexual-intercourse and general pelvic pain. This pain might happen regularly or be constant and increases the risk of blocked fallopian tubes.
In some other cases, blocked fallopian tubes can lead to mild, regular lower abdominal pain and unusual vaginal discharge in a type of blockage called hydrosalpinx. Hydrosalpinx is when a blockage causes the tube to dilate and been filled with fluid. The fluid blocks and affects the egg and sperm. It also prevents fertilization and pregnancy but not every woman will have these symptoms.
Sometimes, a fallopian tube can cause an egg from not fertilizing as it gets stuck. This is known as an ectopic pregnancy.
An ectopic pregnancy may not always cause symptoms and is usually detected during an ultrasound scan. However, some women may experience signs of pregnancy, such as pain on one side of the stomach or vaginal bleeding. Any woman who suspects such symptoms should seek urgent medical attention.

Causes of blocked fallopian tubes
Blockage of fallopian tubes can be caused by many reasons, but the most common cause of blocked fallopian tubes is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which is a sexually transmitted disease (STD’s).
In the absence of PID, previous history of PID or pelvic infection can increase the risk and chances of blocked tubes.

Other potential causes of blocked fallopian tubes includes
Current or history of an STD infection, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea
• History of pelvic and uterine infection caused by an abortion or miscarriage
• Endometriosis, which is a condition that causes the lining of the womb to grow outside of the uterus
• Hydrosalpinx, which is swelling and fluid at the end of a fallopian tube
• History of a ruptured appendix
• History of abdominal surgery
• Previous ectopic pregnancy
• Previous surgeries involving the fallopian tubes, including tubal ligation

Diagnosis
Blocked fallopian tubes can be difficult to identify. The tubes can open and close, so it is not always easy to tell if they are blocked or just closed.
Here are some key tests to diagnose blocked fallopian tubes:
• An X-ray test, known as a hysterosalpingogram or HSG is used to examine the inside of fallopian tubes to help diagnose blockages. During HSG, a doctor introduces a dye into your uterus and fallopian tubes. The stain is visible on an X-ray. If the fluid does not spill into the fallopian tubes, means tubes are blocked
• Keyhole surgery, known as a laparoscopy, can be done for further evaluation. Laparoscopy is when a surgeon makes a small cut in the body and inserts a tiny camera to see into the fallopian tubes. If the doctor finds a blockage during the procedure, they might be rectified.
• An ultrasound test, which is similar to the HSG test, known as a sonohysterogram can also be done.
Treatment and surgery
If your fallopian tubes are blocked by small amounts of scar tissue or adhesions, it may be possible to open both tubes laparoscopically but If your fallopian tubes are blocked by large amounts of scar tissue or adhesions, treatment to remove the blockages may not be possible.

Surgery aims to repair or open damaged fallopian tube is carried out by surgeons using laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) with one of the following methods:
•removing scar tissue

Health / Importance Of A Well Woman Exam And At What Age Can It Be Done by MIsurgical(f): 2:49pm On May 17, 2021
An annual well woman exam is an exam offered to women to review some basic elements of their reproductive health. It is recommended and advisable to be done once a year for all women starting from the age of 18years and above. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, if you’re over 21 but under 29, you should have a pelvic exam done once a year. This yearly visit should include a General Women’s wellness exam which comprises of breast examination, a pelvic examination and a pap-smear for cervical screening but may also include other procedures like cancer screening, health screening, sexually transmitted diseases, concerns about sex, weight control, issues with menstrual period and preconception counselling.

The Pap smear is the test we use to find pre-cancer cells in the cervix before cancer develops…. Most gynaecologists recommend having a Pap smear every three years if their patients’ previous screening tests were normal.

Health / How Does Abortion Affects Fertility by MIsurgical(f): 12:34pm On Mar 02, 2021
Many women who have done abortions hope to have children later in life. Since having an abortion is just about the literal opposite of having a baby, it's natural to wonder if a past procedure will have an impact on future fertility. Abortion doesn’t have any effect on fertility and doesn’t stop a woman from becoming pregnant in the future. There are two types of abortions namely; A medical abortion, which is done by taking medication and has no effect on future pregnancies while a surgical abortion is done by putting instrumentation into the uterus to evacuate the uterus.
Multiple episodes of instrumentation can cause scarring in the cervix area even if it’s not an abortion procedure. However, women with multiple abortions might have the same risk of abnormal placentation like women who have had multiple cesarean sections.

NOTE: Unsafe, Illegal abortion or any other procedures can lead to permanent damage involving your reproductive organs, so ensure a healthy reproductive future. Speak to your gynecologist on this issue. For more questions on this topic or any gynecology related topic visit us at www.miss.com.ng or call us on 08177788223,08177788224

Health / Blockage Of Fallopian Tubes,symptoms,causes,diagnosis,treatment & Possibilities by MIsurgical(f): 1:30pm On Jan 13, 2021

CAUSES OF BLOCKED FALLOPIAN TUBE
Blockage of fallopian tubes can be caused by many reasons, but the most common cause of blocked fallopian tubes is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which is a sexually transmitted disease (STD’s).
In the absence of PID, previous history of PID or pelvic infection can increase the risk and chances of blocked tubes.

Other potential causes of blocked fallopian tubes include
• Current or history of an STD infection, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea

• removing scar tissue
• opening the fallopian tube from the inside to remove the damaged part and connect the two healthy parts.
• making a new opening on the outside of the fallopian

PREGNANCY POSSIBILITIES
Fallopian tubes surgical repair is not always the best option, but it is possible to get pregnant following treatment for blocked fallopian tubes. Your chances for pregnancy will depend on the treatment method and severity of the block.

A successful pregnancy after surgery is more likely when the blockage is near the uterus but if the blockage is at the end of the fallopian tube near the ovary, getting pregnant becomes difficult.

The risk of ectopic pregnancy is higher after surgery to treatment of tubal blockage and the chances of getting pregnant after surgery for tubes damaged by an infection or ectopic pregnancy is small. It depends on how much of the tube must be removed and what part is removed.

Blocked fallopian tubes also causes infertility, but it is still possible to have a child through In-vitro fertilization (IVF) considering if the woman is healthy enough.
