I have been having series of goosebumps of recent, the first I had was the last time I spoke to my mum alive.

I couldn't explain it then, but I feel within me the appearance of that was a way of my mum assuring me of her presence- her love.

Aunty Maggie, had been such a great friend to my mother, her loyalty to my mum is unwaivering even in death.

As she gently pulled the pillow off my face, I couldn't bare to look at her, those eyes of hers made my pain unbearable.

she didn't say anything for a while, she cleared her throat and wiped her eyes with the back of her palm, she asked I look at her.

I did.

I notice the seriousness, I knew within me she wanted to tell me what I have always avoided to hear - reality.

I didn't say a word as she spoke, I made my face expressionless. I just watch as she spoke, in almost a whisper.

I paid attention to her physical appearance, I had to do that, so I could be bold and not cry.

I noticed her aging face, her very visible drooping eye bags, her wrinkled face, the stretch mark on her arm, her discoloured face, I had myself comparing her to my mum who was very pretty, with a nice dentition.

Aunty Margaret, might not be very physically attractive but she had got a gold-plated heart.

I watched as she dug her hand in her bra and brought out some squeezed currencies, she counted them and gave me some for my upkeep.

I murmured a 'thank you', as she made to the door. I went back to my bed and nippled on the bread she brought I reminisced on the words she said.

"you have to grow up fast, this world isn't a bed of roses".

I didn't know exactly why she said that but my intuition knew something was up.

I picked a scarf and wrapped my emaciated body, I went close to the door.

"Sara, it is me" I heard from the outside.

I knew the voice, so well for it reminded me of my pain, my loss.

I knew it was Maggie, my mother's only friend, she had done so much for me already, especially during my mothers burial.

"Sara, you dey inside?, open the door" the voice outside said.

it been three days she came last, she had come to comfort me and force me to eat, she assured me of her presence in my life.

even though I was inconsolable, and couldnt utter a word,I knew she understood to an extent the pain I was passing through. I saw she hurt too.

Another knock on the door and I opened it.

I mumbled some words I didn't even understand and fell on the bed, using the pillow to cover my face.

she sat close to me and held my hands, for the first time, I heard her weep loudly- unashamedly.

I knew she wept for what I have become, a sorry replica of who I used to be.

I knew she wept not because of the pain I was in now, but because of the greater pain I would pass in future.

we sat in silence, but we seem to communicate with our minds.

I heard her speaking to me, trying to pull me out of my misery but my ears where shut by my worn out pillows that smelt like my mum.

she brought out freshly baked home bread and hot akara.

my stomach rumbled, a clear indication of hunger. my I knew no matter how much I satisfied my belle, I can never satisfy my grieving heart or replace it loss.

All of a sudden I had goose bumps over my body.

if you followed the story well, u'd notice the story was told to the daughter by the mother, it was only vividly narrated by the writer.

bringing the daughter into focus, doesn't mean you won't get to know all that transpired in the mothers life, it just the means the writer chooses to merge the both characters.

keep reading and thanks for following the story.

CHAPTER TWO

SARAH'S DIARY.

its been six months but the memory is still fresh and the pain fresher.

I never knew emotional pain could hurt this much. The pain I feel is indescribable, I hurt so much I feel my soul bleeding.

I ask myself why me?

why is the one thing that means a lot snatched from me?

some children were born into wealthy homes.

some children have siblings.

some have both parents.

but me,

I have no dad.

No brother or sister.

I have no extended family.

I got just one person, who I love and who loved me with all of her being.

when people sneer behind us, call us the dung of the earth. she smiled and assured me that we can conquer the world.

we agreed and still lived happy.

my mother was a prostitute, I never looked down on her, I loved her and saw a strong courageous woman.

why then was she taken from me?

life! why are you so cruel.

I cry harder, as i heard my bones jingling against themselves.

I have lost hope.

in the world, in man.

I feel her presence, even now. I wish so hard to see her face.

for her smile.

for her to walk through that door, towards me and tell me I have been dreaming. that she was with me forever.

I hear her voice again.

this time, faintly.

I picked myself up, towards the mirror and stared at my reflection.

I saw the tear slid down my cheek, down to my lips.

the tear tasted salty and bitter.

I hear a knock on the door.

I said softly, mummy is that you?

the day it happened, she killed what was left of her conscience. she picked Sarah and in her smile she saw herself, she was going to do what was best for her child irrespective of what the world thought.

even if she would die, there was hope of a better life, a life she hoped to live in her innocent child SARA.

she walked through the major road that linked the city, market and the ghetto were she live. she didn't take a vehicle, she trekked for a reason.

she wanted to stare at the faces of the product of the world, the faces of men, women the rich and the poor alike, to see if there was any compassion in them.

she stared so hard their minds questioned and doubted her sanity, she smiled as they looked at her with repulsed.

their attitude proved a singular fact, no one cared for anyone, she has to do what was needful.

use her body to quench the taste of atrocities in men.

Well said my good man. Well said.

It will interest u to know tha even the church will not go ahead with a marriage until the bride price has been paid.

And like u said, every good custom and practice will suffer abuse and corruption. That doesn't make it bad.

I can't imagine a man refusing to pay a woman's bride price in one way or the other. A woman he professes to love? That man ain't worth his salt. And that woman isn't his wife.

the traditional marriage rite can hold, without the groom paying any sort of money to the bride family as a price for her.

Gifts can be exchange between the both family.

As said by some already, bride price is a culture that has been in practice aeons ago and although not in support of it I'm not against it either. The bride price praxis in itself isn't a problem, the problem is the list that's attached to it. Those tubers of yams, kegs of palm wine, drinks etc should be scrapped. Those items shouldn't be mandatory but voluntarily.

Many keep saying that bride price has been reasonably reduced to 5k or less in most places but that to me isn't the problem. The obscene and irrational list is the problem.

what is the essence of the '5k' or other monies paid, if I may ask?

how about countries that do not practise bride payment? the name in itself is not right 'bride PRICE',.

You started well, but couldn't help twisting the facts as you bring your post to conclusion.
An abusive man doesn't need bride prize to abuse his wife.

Before a woman crosses that great chasm of marriage where she leaves her father's home for good and cling to a new home and culture, where she would bear children who will be the future generation, children who would be kings, presidents, leaders and teachers, children who will trace their lineage through their father, it is right that certain rites ought to be fulfilled.
A young unmarried girl belongs to her father and her father's family to an extent.

Bride price is both a physical and spiritual ritual as far as African culture goes. It is the appeasement of both man and spirit. It is also the fulfilment of manhood and a testament of financial responsibility on the side of the man that he is capable of taking care of his family.
As far as Africa goes, until a bride price is paid as stipulated by the girl's father, she's not properly married. The spirits won't recognise such a marriage even if it were conducted in a church by the Pope himself or in a court by the chief judge of the federation. Until a father's requirements are met in the traditional marriage setting, she remains not properly married. Only he has the privilege to give his daughter out.

Bride price does not in anyway depicts the trading off of women. Like every good custom and practice, it is bound to suffer abuse and corruption.

what an intending couple need is blessings from both parents and it is not tied to
tubbers of yam, kegs of 'kia-kia, rolls of tobacco & snuff and money to be paid to the bride parent, even if the groom can't afford it.

The essence of bride price is to show the woman's value.
And it's not just our (African) culture.

All over the world to woo a woman you have to bring gifts. Weather its a single rose or 10 tubers of yam, you just can't walk into a woman's family and take away one of their children.

No matter how emancipated women have become they are still women. They will not lose thier ability to bear children neither will they suddenly become physically stronger than men no matter how much they earn. Women are nurturers of the human race and should be treated with a certain respect and dignity and should be given the value they deserve when being made a part of a man's family.

Hence the bride price.

if a man want to show appreciation to the bride family by bringing gifts, it very okay, likewise the lady.

but no piece of paper should be presented to the man to pay certain amount of money to the family, even if the man can not afford it.

A lady's value is not on the money the man pays to her family, but expressed in the way he respects and treats her and her family.

i have always being a pro bride-price, i was brought up to understand that bride price is the pride of every woman. perhaps, bride price was a thing of pride centuries ago where women were to be seen but not heard, where a woman's primary duty was to produce children and take care of her husband and home, it was no surprise that men then acquired and married so many women as they were commodities of machandise.

things have really changed now, women are no longer shadows in their matrimonies, they now merge their primary responsibilities and their careers.

women in some homes are now co-bread winners in their , some help their husbands when in need financially.

what is the real essence of the groom paying money to the bride family? some bride family marriage list consists of varying prices for the bride ranging from skin complexion, to intellect, to educational qualification, the higher these variables the higher the money to be paid.

since the groom was forced to pay through his teeth, he regards his wife as his property for life, her opinion in the house are not important, she must perform the reason for her purchase, she must be ready to endure him and pray harder when he cheats, she must be ready to pray and fast even harder when he sexually, emotionally and physically abuse her, little wonder why men support the phrase 'no rape in marriage'.

the bride price culture was propounded by men themselves, because everything on the list and even the monies paid go to their pocket.

As every other culture that is archaic and have been scrapped, the culture of bride price should follow suit.

what do you think, does bride price enslaves women or liberate them, should it be scrapped or maintained?.

Politics / Re: Eyewitness Account Of Fulani Attack In Enugu State......(photos)...Greatiyk4u by mizquote(f): 7:43pm On Apr 27, 2016
greatiyk4u:
It is with profound pain that I type this information, I am previously aware of the Biblical sayings that the HEART of man is desperately evil but I think the heart of the fulanis is that of the devil himself......

Over the years, we have lived harmoniously in "partial" peace with the Fulanis in the South-East until things started falling apart since early 2011 when they started being torn in our flesh......their wicked act predates Buhari's regime but the only major difference between then and now is publicity, believe me the media is not helping matters at all.

How on earth will the national dailies reel out conflicting numbers of victims in the same incidence? Are they that lazy to stay in their AC office and grant fictitious interviews to anonymous persons even when in this case every body is authorized to speak? Punch wrote 20 dead, sun-15 dead, Nairaland written by deluded FKK and his cohorts, 40 ,100 and even quoting 200 dead.......hmmm, to put the record straight so far about 6 dead bodies have been discovered and deposited at the Bishop Shanahan mortuary.

I must and also encourage you to commend the resilience and courage of the youth of that NIMBO community in Uzor-Uwani Local Govt. Of Enugu state.......they showed they were not cowards by doing everything within their powers to resist their attackers............the crux of the matter is that the Fulani herdsmen numbering around 50 took them unawares at around 3am in the morning, on sensing the impending danger, they rang the town bell when unknown to them the Fulanis had laid ambush, the men on hearing the bell started coming out to the village square to know what was going on.

On sighting people coming out for the meeting, the herdsmen started shooting sporadically and the people initially scampered for safety.....in the dark early hours of the day, they scared away many of them and set 2houses, car and some motorcycles ablaze, they continued till around 6.30am when the men came out from their hiding places and assembled to arm themselves and pursue the Fulanis who hard ran away through a neighboring Kogi village.

Shortly, the police and Army arrived the scene and foiled the attempted revenge mission, they surrounded the village and shoot sporadically into the air to calm down the saturated atmosphere...the people relaxed, corporated with them and started looking 4 the dead and injured victims to rescue. As at monday morning, 5 dead bodies with many injured ones were taken to Nsukka, the sixth corpse was discovered in the bush yesterday when the Governor visited.

As usual, many Nairalanders propounded many theories about the incidence to cajole the public into what they believe in.................one wrote that the Governor called Buhari but He refused to answer, does it mean if the Governors immediate family was involved that he will wait for Buhari to order police for rescue?........why don't they wait for Buhari's order before going for mass arrest of unsuspecting members of the public whose only offense is that the Police needed bail out money for their selfish greed?

Again, that some of the displace villagers are taking refuge in some primary schools in Nsukka, which is a blatant lie,no body was displaced that much, the people of the community went about their normal Business yesterday, and that was why the Governor was able to address them in the market area where normal trade was going on or were they transported from the IDP camp to meet the Governor? As a result the whole community of Fulani ran away from the Local Government and the neighboring towns, and the villagers had a crucial meeting meeting where they agreed on the way 4wrd before seeing the Governor. However, after crying yesterday, the Governor promised #100k to each family of the victim and #5mill to the traditional ruler to cater for the injured.....

For sending the commissioner of Police, GOC 82Div, the state Governor and the IG of police to the scene within 48hrs, I think the federal Government has shown concern which will remain cosmetic concern till the perpetrators of the pogrom are brought to book

Nigeria is my country and
Buhari is my president

op, if what you wrote is a letter short the truth, may same fate befall you.

the next day was better, it was endurable because she had hope, a hope to eat, a hope to get a better apartment, hope of Sara having a better fabric over her skin.

her friend was happy over the money and called her a 'sharp girl', a 'fast learner', . she had never had that much money, she couldn't believe it was hers.

they scouted round the town in search of an affordable apartment, they both searched until they were referred to a man who was leaving his room.

she met with the man whose real name was 'amadu', fortunately he was her customer, a recruit in the military, he was willing to sell off his properties to her for a 'give-away' price, the offer was nice, a great opportunity until she realized the money she had wasn't enough.

the man was nice to her and even wanted to have a short- service with her but she declined because she was still spotting.

the man was kind enough to give her a deadline of seven days to raise the money or he would give the room to the next bidder who of course would pay better.

she really needed the room, she needed to make quick money, the thought of going to 'area-mama', crossed her mind but her spirit was strongly against it.

there was just an option that was sure to make her quick money.
she tossed all through the night thinking of what to do, how to raise the huge amount of money to add to the one at hand.

she decided to do it.
she had no other avenue of making such amount of money within a week even if she slept with ten men daily.

she spoke to maggie who kicked against her idea but her mind was made up already.

what was she protecting?
dignity?, womanhood, she had none of those. if she could sleep with all manner of men, if all type of men including men who were likely mentally deranged, psychos, assassins, kidnappers got into her vagi.na by mere flashing of rumbled-looking naira note what else was there to protect? she convinced herself.

A night digging other creatures won't harm her, even if it did, it would have no effect on her for she was damaged.

all she wanted was to protect her innocent baby from the contamination of the world, to let her daughter off the corruption of life, to bear the shame her parent couldn't bear for her sake.

she looked at her baby sleeping peacefully and renewed the vow she had made earlier, it was stronger this time, she vowed she would die trying to give her child a better future than she had.

her mind was made up.
Maggie couldn't dissuade her, for the first time ever, Maggie saw her determination and eagerness to do what's was wrong.

she spoke to her client.
they negotiated.

a date was fixed for her,

her slot was with a monkey, which was to lasts for 25minutes.

she was startled but tried to maintain a straight face.

" em, em, I have never done that before" she said.

Area mama looked at her for a while and opened her stumpy thighs. Sara mum watched her as she went to her cupboard, brought a pack of sliced bread, two sachet of margarine and a thin of sardine, she ate for a while before speaking up.

" you no say, I be area mama1 of this relaxation palace, na me be the general overseer of this asha.wo joint, nothing dey pass my nose. I don dey monitor you tey tey, before i bring up this business plan, I reason you wella. this business, you no go kill anybody o, na to join us for bus dey lure passengers wey we go sell to some big politician boys".

***"""""*************************************##*
she left with the pretense of giving the business proposal a thought. she knew exactly what area mama wanted, she and her baby was to be used to lure people at night into taxis especially females as they are more comfortable to use a taxi with a female and a baby in it.

though, area mama didn't spill it all, she deciphered that it was a ritualist cum kidnapping syndicate business.

the thought of been paid fifty thousand every week was quite tempting but she needed to tread carefully as her hands were soiled with blood already.

things were changing rapidly for her. she has a child now, stole from her customer and now this.

some hours later, Maggie came, looking tired. she smelt badly of alcohol, she was drenched in and out.

Intuitively, she knew what her friend had done, what she did. it was the newest trend in the brothel, se.x patronage was low and girls needed money to pay their rents, feed and maintain their selves. she knew Maggie did that because of her and her baby.

she wept inside, when the trend began, at first she thought it was a rumour, but more and more girls indulged in it. she saw the big, nice, tainted jeep come to pick the girls.

she swore by her child never to indulge in that acts, but she realized as she watched her friend that she wasn't better, see her contemplating on being part of a ritualist gang because of her greed.

she wasn't better she thought.
better than the girls who slept with the politicians animals for stipends.

what wouldn't she do for money.
life was indeed unfair she thought.

she was deeply worried. she squatted and pushed, nothing happened.

she was nervous because she didn't feel the cotton ball in her.

someone knocked.
she ignored it and tried pushing harder.

the knock persisted followed by a voice
"who dey inside baff room, na piken u dey born abi na man you dey straff, I don siddon hear for past five minutes and you never comot".

she opened the door and was face to face with 'area mama', she knew the woman was troublesome and she didn't want to join issues with her.

"Haa. 'area mama', sorry o, I no no say na you dey my back, abeg no vex" she said and turned to leave.

"heeyu', come here, I been wan yarn with you but first and foremost, wetin you dey do for baffroom?, I been think say you siddon for man Pri.ck?

she was uncomfortable with the fluency of 'area mamas' vulgarity, though she's a sex worker, she was uncomfortable in saying certain words freely with temerity.

"I dey try check something" she said.

area mama was a funny sight to behold, she was short, with protruding stomach and large legs, she cared less about her weight, all the money she made, she spent on food.

she believed one lived once, which is today, thinking of tomorrow was unnecessary. she believed one basic need was 'food', which she didn't joke with.

she was the most patronised sex worker, thanks to her secret Fulani recipe 'kaya mata' a.k.a 'kpekus sweetener', she use it before commencing 'show', with her numerous client, who become addicted to her and are ever willing to die inside her. Her sweetness was legendary.

Sara's mum, had no choice than to open up to 'area mama', who laughed and ask her to follow her to her room.

she laid, back to the ground, face to the ceiling, legs apart and feet on two buckets placed upside down.

her tear hadn't healed well.
she felt unbearable pain as 'area mama', hand went in.

the pain she felt was nothing compared to labour pain.

she closed her eyes and gnashed her teeth.
she was used to pain but this feeling was worst.

she opened her eyes when she felt 'area mamas' hand withdrawing.

the room was consumed with the stench from the lost-but+found cotton ball. it was nothing like wool, it looked like a lump of beef.

she was happy. thanked her saviour profusely, cleaned up and was about leaving when area mama asked her to stay, that she had a business proposal to offer.

she sat. her private on fire and her temperature running.

"you fit thief"? area mama broke into her thought.

she blinked.

the issue was settled, as she convinced everyone that the man was drunk to stupor and may have misplaced the money before coming into the brothel.

she couldn't believe her luck as people bought her thought, even though her heart raced as she spoke.

the man left, his hands on his head, looking dejected.

A Lady, wearing a yellow and green gown, and a funny, badly drawn eyebrow, said in a funny accent, " I pray i pick da kine money for ground, as market dull like this, if I see customer money i go carry yam, I swear by my grand mother grave".

she didn't want to leave immediately to avoid suspicion, so she sat and tried to join in the gist, but words were heavy to utter, she wondered why she was still shy after being here for up to a year there.

the topic later got to the gist of the sales of used condoms, one lady who obviously wasn't new in the game started it by saying" abeg who notice say our customers now don the wise up, all of them the insist on the package after the show, how dem take know say we dey sell am"?

A lady puffing a cigarette and sipping from a bottle of stout, wearing an anklet came in and announced that an old woman was outside and wanted to return a baby to one of them.

she was thankful for that opportunity as she left.

she couldn't believe her fortune as she counted the money when she got to her room,it was a sum of fifty thousand naira, in clear, crispy-minted notes.

she smelt the money and hugged her baby.she had never in her entire life touched such an amount of money.

she was restless as she waited for Maggie. different scenarios played in her head, what if the man invades the brothel with police?

what if the money was a trap?

she laid her sleeping baby on the bed after feeding her and hurried to the rest room to relieve herself.

because the toilet was soiled, she stood up instead of bending to urinate.

she was shocked as her urine colour was red, she later realized that she had a cotton wool down there, she had forgotten due to over excitement. she needed to get it out.

she deep her finger, one, followed by the next into her womanliness she couldn't retrieve the soaked wool.

she tried again and again, she couldn't.

she became alarmed.

she approached him, he was not aware of her presence, he was focused on the bottles of beer on the table.

she sat on the next available chair, close to him.

"good evening sir"

he mumbled a response she couldn't discern.

he took another bottle of beer from the crate under table and opened it with his teeth.

she didn't know what to do,she knew instinctively that he was a big catch, for a drunk man would not care where his manhood enters.

she began to massage the mans leg, slowly and meticulously. she started from his knee cap and went further to his groin area, he seem to enjoy it and it encouraged her.

she grabbed his private and asked if they should get a room.

he nodded.

she felt happy and hurriedly book a room for 'short service'.

when they got to the room. the man removed his cloth and fell on the bed, he was dead drunk.

she noticed something.
A black bag was under his armpit, even in the man state of drunkenness ,he was careful with the bag.

she crawled unto him, and tried to pick the bag, his grip tighten on it.

she tried again, he held strongly to it.

An idea struck her.

she pulled his trouser off and climbed on him.though, the man was drunk, he enjoyed what was happening and made funny sound.

she tried again to pick the bag, this time it was successful, she couldn't believe her eyes on what she saw.

the content of the bag was hair clipper, shoe spray and a bundle of money. she didnt think twice.

with shaky hands, she took the money and hid it in her bra.

she quietly left.

An hour later, she heard voices and someone crying and talking loudly. she heard the managers voice saying.

"this place is a respectable place, we no dey harbour criminals here, Iyanu go call the girl for me"

when she heard that, her heart sank.

they were discharged and certified free to go home.

but, they both didn't want it, they wanted a little time, so they could think of what to do, where to go to. they knew it wasn't proper to show up in a brothel with their tiny bundle.

it wasn't right nor proper.

she was deadly broke, Maggie was too.

Maggie was angry but tried to control it, she thought her friend was sensible enough to plan herself well, but it obvious she wasn't.

she became angrier, when she knew her friend couldn't meet up with men until a while.

who will take care of her baby? Maggie thought.

they needed an apartment off the brothel as it was offensive to other customers and her colleague for her to bring a baby over.

Maggie knew instinctively that her friend was unfit to work, so she would be the one fending for the three of them.

she loved her friend dearly, she hoped her friend wasn't making a mistake by keeping the baby.

they both thought on how to sneak the baby in, so her colleagues wouldn't know, they needed time to sort themselves out and gather money for a new apartment.

***""""***************************""*#**********"
the baby was successfully sneaked in, and they pleaded with the management to allow them a few weeks to gather finances.

For a week, she survived by eating bread and water, she felt dizzy when her baby sucked at her dry breast.

she felt for her friend who struggled to fend for them and pay their outstanding rent, she knew things were bad economically and only few customers patronized them.

her baby didnt have a single cloth, she wrapped her in a wrapper and fed her tap water when she cry out of hunger. At exactly one week later.

she knew she couldn't let maggie bear the burden alone, she was breastfeeding but due to inadequate food, her breast milk production was low.

it pained her whenever she looked at her baby and realize that she was suffering from hunger , it broke her heart and made her feel wicked.

seven days later, she took her baby, wrapped in an old cloth to an old woman that sold 'agidi jollof' opposite the brothel.

she needed money, she desperately wanted a few change to buy food and some cloths for her poor baby.

the old Mama collected the baby, she was once a prostitute herself that had a child ten years ago, which she wrapped in an old nylon and flung into a ditch. she never forgave herself after that.

she saluted the mother for keeping the child.

Sara's mother knew she was still bleeding, no man will want to have sex with a prostitute on her period.

she looked thin and malnourished, her hair struck out from the piece of cloth she used in covering her hair.

she prayed for wisdom, and an idea struck her immediately. she rushed to the chemist and bought a ball of cotton wool on credit, she went to the toilet, her legs apart, she shoved a large junk in her vagi.na, she used her finger to drive it deep and deeper.

that would stop the bleeding for a while she thought.

At the corridor where she sat, she noticed an old man who was visibly drunk.

she approached him, and her fortune changed.
