Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, on Monday vowed to resign if Nigeria continues to import fuel by 2019. Mr. Kachikwu stated this during an interview on BBC World Service programme, HardTalk, anchored by Stephen Sackur. In the interview, which lasted 23 minutes, Mr. Kachikwu promised to deliver on the completion of the refineries, noting that he was committed to delivering a future for oil in Nigeria. On Nigeria’s over-reliance on oil, the minister said the government plans to diversify into agriculture and other sources of revenue. He said, “Oh, yes, clearly over- reliant , but whether that is dangerous… I look at the positive side of oil also in terms of what it’s done to a country over the years . But when the price slumps, it’s dangerous. “But we will love to see a lot more diversification, a lot more efforts going into agriculture, emphasis on tourism…” When asked when the country was going to be self-sufficient in terms of refining petroleum, Mr. Kachikwu declared that 2019 had been set as the target. “2019 is the target time… I target 2019 . If I don’ t achieve it, I will walk…I put the date and I will achieve it,” the minister said. He, however, did not clarify if he meant early 2019 or the end of 2019 with the current administration’s tenure set to lapse in May 2019 unless re-elected. When probed about President Muhammadu Buhari ’s health, the minister noted that he didn’t know the details of the president’s medical treatment. “He is in London; he’s undergoing hospital treatment. I don’ t know the details of that. I obviously wouldn’t know. But…he’s back in London, he ’s continued some levels of meetings. “He has a very efficient vice president who is sitting in for him in his absence,” he added. Commenting further, Mr. Kachikwu explained that he had delivered on all his promises, stating that he made the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, a profit-making organisation. “I have delivered on all that I have promised when I came into office,” he said. “First, I took Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and made it a profit- making organisation. “This is the first time such is happening. I reshaped the organisation. I removed cash call deficits of over $ 6 billion and renegotiated it. I will deliver on the refineries and I’m committed to it. I will deliver a future for oil that makes sense for Nigeria. “I can ’t pretend that we’re going to solve in one day all the problems that happened in Nigeria in the past,” he added. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/231897-%E2%80%8Ei-will-resign-if-nigeria-continues-to-import-petrol-by-2019-kachikwu.html |

A 20-man group of aged Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) under the aegis of the Justice Reform Project (JRP) on Tuesday said Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen’s resignation is not enough in view of “the grave nature of the allegations” against him. The group said justice should run its course in the Onnoghen matter, and also urged the Nigerian Government to sanction other judges whose legitimate earnings are not commensurate with their wealth, According to JRP, extending the anti-graft exercise to other judges will restore confidence in the Judiciary and debunk the impression that the former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) was being victimised. The group, set up to push for reforms in the judiciary/legal profession, is led by one of the oldest SANs, Ebun Sofunde, with Jibrin Okutepa, Dr Babatunde Ajibade, Prof Ernest Ojukwu, Osaro Eghobamien, Mrs. Funke Adekoya, Kayode Sofola, among others, as members. In a statement, JRP said it noted Onnoghen’s resignation “with concern”, but added that the matter should not end there. The group said “his resignation/voluntary retirement is not an answer to these allegations", adding that it expects that justice, which is no respecter of persons or position, will be allowed to take its course". JRP urged the Federal Government to look beyond Onnoghen for three reason main reasons. It said: “Beyond Honourable Justice W. S. N. Onnoghen, however, the JRP believes the revelations that have been made in the course of this affair necessitate that urgent steps be taken to identify and sanction all other Nigerian judicial officers who are found to possess inexplicable wealth that cannot be reconciled with their legitimate income or their asset declarations, two of the allegations made against Justice Onnoghen. “These steps are necessary for a variety of reasons. First, to restore public confidence in the judiciary and disabuse the notion that all judicial officers in Nigeria are corrupt and that justice is for sale. “Second, to disabuse the notion that Justice Onnoghen’s travails are a mere witch-hunt motivated by ethnic and political interests rather than the result of a genuine concern for sanitising and reforming the Nigerian judiciary. “Third, to eliminate the suspicion that the Executive arm of government is using the information it has access to by virtue of its control over the apparatus of the state to take selective action only against those judicial officers that fail to do its bidding.” Besides, the group said Onnoghen’s response to allegations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before the National Judicial Council (NJC) raises significant questions about how heads of courts manage judiciary’s funds. “Without prejudice to the legitimate clamour for increased budgetary allocation to the judiciary, its financial independence and improvement in the working conditions of service of judicial officers, all of which JRP wholeheartedly supports, there must be better management of that which is currently allocated. “The JRP calls on everyone with a stake in our judicial system (the public, the Bar, and the bench), to report their concerns, if any, to the relevant regulatory agencies so that they are investigated. “The legal profession is a self-regulating one, so it behooves all its members to take an active interest in maintaining the standards of rectitude and integrity expected of judicial officers and legal practitioners. “In making this call, the JRP merely exhorts every member of the legal profession to act as they are expected to act. If the profession does not regulate itself effectively, incidents such as those involving Justice Onnoghen will remain a fixture in our judicial system.” On Thursday, the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) will give judgement in the trial of Onnoghen for a six-count charge of fraudulent declaration of assets. http://saharareporters.com/2019/04/16/20-elderly-sans-warn-buhari-onnoghens-resignation-not-enough?fbclid=IwAR0VAkiJfjlEQYYI3_k8eJKhQt2xfLbCW1fPI1QzuiAWNahs6rz5ypmj-XE |

The party is supreme. And all members who won election on the party's platform need to respect its decision as long as it was done with good intention. Allowing what happened in 2015 to re-occur again will affect the policy and programme implementation of Buhari administration. |

Senate Leader Ahmad Lawan has officially declared his intention to contest the office of the Senate President in June when the 9th Assembly will be inaugurated. Lawan has been in the news as one of the contenders for the seat, but he did not officially declare his position until Friday night in Abuja during a session with journalists. The Senate Leader, who was APC’s choice candidate for the position in 2015, said, however, that he was ready to respect whatever zoning arrangement that the national leadership of the party would come up with. He said he has since commenced contacting his colleagues in the APC, PDP and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) to gain their support for his aspiration. Lawan said he believed the APC had learnt its lessons from the 2015 experience when one of its then senators, Bukola Saraki, defied the party’s wishes and aligned with PDP senators to get elected as Senate President. Lawan said: “I am a loyal party man. I will respect the decisions of my leaders and the party. We need the cooperation and support of everybody. I also believe that if we want to work with the Executive in such a manner that we can deliver good governance, first we need to achieve unity amongst ourselves. “We are senators who believe in party supremacy. We believe in the leadership of our party. But the leadership we are seeking is leadership of the Senate and the National Assembly. So, it is very critical and crucial that we talk to our colleagues and convince them that we are the right people to lead the Senate and the National Assembly. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/ahmad-lawan-declares-for-senate-presidency.html |
