Politics / Boko Haram Killed 17 Soldiers, 2 Policemen In Yobe Military Base Attack by mmb(m): 6:43am On Dec 26, 2018
Seventeen soldiers and two policemen were killed in a fresh Boko Haram attack on military base at Kuka-reta village in Damaturu, Yobe state. The attack happened on Monday 24th December 2018.

A security source told Daily Trust that seventeen bodies of the dead soldiers were recovered at the Monday’s evening attack at the base located 20km from Damaturu.

“17 bodies of dead soldiers were recovered, Kuka-reta JTF camp destroyed, 2 military trucks burnt down completely and looted equipments and drugs from the medical centre in the area,” he revealed.

A resident, Muhammad Lawan, said that heavily armed fighters stormed the village around 5pm on Monday and attacked the soldiers in the location.

“They arrived in eight trucks and 2 motorcycles and open fire on the military. We all scampered to the nearby bushes for safety.

“Later in the night, we saw some of the wounded soldiers. I personally called the soldier to come and pick one of their men that lost his hand, and had bullet wounds but they refused to come,” he said.

A source from Damaturu Specialist Hospital said the soldiers have deposited 18 corpses at the morgue.

“The corpses were brought here and deposited very early in the morning today but we cannot confirm whether they are all security operatives,” he said.

However, of the 17 security operatives killed, the Orderly to the Aide De Corp (ADC) of Governor Ibrahim Gaidam was among the dead.

Daily Trust gathered that the orderly, Inspector Ahmad was killed by the insurgents after picking the governor’s son from Maiduguri International Airport.

“On arriving at Kuka-reta, there was hold up on the highway and he decided to clear the way, not knowing that the insurgents were attacking the base. Unfortunately, they shot him dead, while the governor’s son and the driver narrowly escaped,” he revealed.

Politics / Maiduguri Residents Protest Against YEDC For Supplying Them 24-hour Electricity by mmb(m): 7:20pm On Dec 18, 2018
Maiduguri Residents Protest Against YEDC For Supplying Them 24-Hour Electricity Daily

Residents of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, have kicked against the 24-hour supply of electricity to their communities.

According to the residents, the constant electricity supply has increased the amount they pay for electricity and has led to "outrageous billings".

They accused the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) of giving them high bills and called for a reversal to the 12-hour electricity supply they previously enjoyed.

Speaking with NAN, Ibrahim Suleiman, a resident of Bolori Layout, said: “YEDC should go back to the former supply system where electricity was supplied for 12 hours and not 24 hours recently being enjoyed. I work from 7am to 4pm, so I do not need any electricity until I get home. But in this case whether you consume power or not, you will be billed to pay for it. I think this is not fair."

Esther Chukwuma, another consumer, referred to the billing system as "frustrating", saying: "My bill indicated that I used 605 units in November and they charged N14,000 as against N6,500 for September where I used the same units. They are charging me for what I did not consume because during the day, I spend most of my time in my shop.

"I only use the electricity at night at home. I have a prepaid meter in the shop and I don’t spend more than N2,000 in a whole month. So how come I am not staying at home and I am being asked to pay N14,000. I am here in their office, demanding an explanation."

On her own, Fatima Musa, a widow, said: “I was given a bill of N15,000 monthly instead of the N5,000 I used to get monthly. I strongly disagree with this outrageous charges given without any explanation."

According to Mrs Musa, electricity consumers, especially those without prepaid meters constituted a higher percentage of those affected, as the billing process was “opaque and lacks transparency”.

Malam Abdullahi Bako, who lives in Gwange, accused YEDC of charging between N9,000 and N15,000 for electricity supplied to a one-room apartment in a month.

“We are being forced to pay for electricity we never consumed; this is extortion, we demand for transparency in the billing methodology,” Bako said.

Addressing the issues raised, Alhaji Usman Wakta, the YEDC Maiduguri Business Manager, said: “These complaints may be as a result of the commissioning of the 330kV transmission line which now supplies electricity 24 hours. On the average, we now supply electricity in the town for a minimum of 22 hours in a day, which simply implies that the consumption of energy by residents in the state have multiplied or even tripled itself.

“We took a simple study from our prepaid meters users and we found out that the people that usually came to buy unit of N2,000 or N3,000 in a month now have to spend N15,000 or N20,000 because of their energy usage. One thing we notice about the consumers is that they waste energy. People have this habit of leaving their lights on even in the afternoon.

“Go to some super markets or filling stations, you will see more than 200 bulbs on in the afternoon. So the more you load you use the more energy you consume."

Responding to the allegations of "outrageous billings for those without prepaid meters, Wakta said: ”We go to people’s home to do load assessment based on the gadgets they have in the house and bill them accordingly."

Politics / Kwankwaso Set To Return To APC by mmb(m): 7:31am On Dec 17, 2018
Barring last minute change, former Governor of kano state Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have concluded plans to return to the All Progressive Congress (APC), from the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Our reporter learnt on good authority that the Senator representing Kano central Kwankwaso, have been sending Emissaries to the Presidency to pave way for his return into the fold of the APC again.

It would be recalled that Kwankwaso alongside 12 other Senators in July, 2018 defected to the PDP. Kwankwaso vied for the office of the Presidency under the platform of the PDP and finished 4th in the presidential race. Impeccable source in the Kwankwassiyya camp told this newspaper that, the Senator is not happy with some developments in the PDP and feel uncomfortable.

The sources added that as at the time of filling this report the PDP Presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar hasn’t not release a dime to campaign in kano, noting that Kwankwaso had allegedly submitted a proposal of over N1 Billion to Atiku. Since the request was tabled, Atiku have kept mum, after series of reminders were sent to him by Kwankwaso. Kwankwaso is equally angry, Atiku didn’t appoint him campaign cordinator in the North-west, considering his wealth of experience. “ I can confirm to you that Oga is not happy about so many decisions that are not going his way, I don’t see him staying in PDP”. Miffed by this the former Governor have consulted widely and have concluded to return to the APC.
The source revealed that the only obstacle on his way back to APC is the insistence of those in the Presidency that he (Kwankwaso) should ‘ go and mend faces with the state Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.’ Kwankwaso is said to be very upset with that decision which he perceived as condescending low to plead with a man he installed who he felt betrayed him. Another factor troubling the former Presidential aspirant is the disquiet in his Kwankwassiyya camp, since he allegedly imposed his brother in-law Alhaji Abba Kabiru Yusuf as the PDP governorship candidate.

Many of his allies are not happy with the alleged imposition of his In-law, which has since led to the exit of his staunch supporters of the duo of General Idris Bello Danbazzau (RTD), and Hajiya Balaraba Ibrahim who joined the APC recently. Our reporter gathered reliably that many of his close allies are on their way back to the APC, which include the national chairman of Kwankwassiyya movement former Secretary to the State Government Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, former national treasurer of the APC Alhaji Bala Gwagwarwa, former Deputy Governor Hafiz Abubakar among others all on their way back to APC and may soon be received by President Muhammadu Buhari. To this end, political pundits in the state are of the view that Ganduje’s re-election bid look like a walk in the park.
