The police said, in Lagos, on Monday, that they have arrested a 30-year-old man, who allegedly cut off the hand of a co-tenant over an unpaid N100 electricity bill.

Frank Mba, the state police command's spokesman, stated this while parading the suspect, a bricklayer, in Ikeja. He said the suspect was arrested on September 16, at 5, Aboru Street, Iyana-Ipaja, a Lagos suburb, after he had allegedly severed the right hand of a tenant, Koya Arowosegbe, with a cutlass.

According to Mr Mba, one of the occupants in the 12-room tenement was given a bill of N700 to pay for electricity consumed by her; out of which she paid N600. "The landlady, after waiting for about two days without her paying the N100 balance, decided to disconnect her room," he said. "The disconnection did not go down well with Arowosegbe, who spearheaded a fight on behalf of the woman in a bid to reconnect her room. During the fight, the suspect claimed he intended to scare him with a cutlass, but unfortunately, he cut off the man's right hand."

Mr Mba said the victim was receiving medical attention at a private hospital in Agege, adding that the suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.
