Euphorbia plants (Euphorbia spp.) also go by the easier to say, but less elegant, name of Spurge. They are a family of plants that may be grown as houseplants or occasionally outdoors. There are many varieties of Euphorbia plants, with fascinating forms that range from shrubs, herbs, or cactus-like .

Growing Euphorbias is easy and some are hardy in temperate climates. These are easy to start from seed and propagate from cuttings. Learn how to cultivate a Euphorbia plant that will start conversations and cause second looks.
About Euphorbia Plants Euphorbias occur naturally in many parts of the world, but most notably Africa, Asia, Europe and North and South America. The variation of form and size provide a spectacle of plant life. Some are as large as trees and others range as small ground covers. There are over 2,000 species, many of which you will find familiar from interior commercial plantings.
Crown of thorns is recognizable by its spiky stems, and donkey spurge is aptly named with thick rope-like stems sprawling away from the plant. Poinsettias are a form of Euphorbia that is recognizable to almost everyone. Most varieties of Euphorbia plants produce weird and unusual flowers.
Gardeners should be cautious when handling Spurge, as all varieties have a milky latex sap that can be irritating or even poisonous. How to Cultivate a Euphorbia Plant As a general rule, Spurge requires well-drained soil in full sun.
A few tolerate shadier conditions, but none of the family is fussy about soil condition. They even thrive in very poor soils and can tolerate periods of drought. Euphorbia plant care is simple. Provide them light, moderate moisture and watch for annoying pests, like whitefly. Provide water under the plant’s leaves to prevent powdery mildew. You will not need to fertilize Spurge often. Wait until the bottom leaves become yellow before feeding with a water-soluble plant food. Prune when the plant gets out of hand. These plants are almost impossible to kill and are a perfect choice for the novice gardener. Growing Euphorbia to share with a friend is also a great beginner propagation project.

Additional Growing Tips for Euphorbia

Spurge grows quite well from seeds sown indoors in pots. You can propagate Euphorbia more quickly and easily by gathering up the “volunteers” around an established plant. You may also root stem cuttings in a soilless medium, such as peat. Keep them lightly misted and enclose the pot in a bag to keep moisture in. Let the pot breathe once a day for an hour, so the soil does not mold. Once the cutting has rooted, you can pot it in regular soil or plant outdoors in moderate climates.

One of the more important growing tips for Euphorbia is to let the stem cutting dry for a few days before planting. This allows the sap to form a callus on the cut end and prevents rotting. Whether you want a giant thornless cactus specimen 6 feet tall or a creeping, sweetly flowering ground cover, you should try growing Euphorbias. They reward the gardener with more than just good looks, but remind us all of the variety and beauty found in nature.

Agriculture / Bleeding Hearts Flower by morrowgarden: 7:46pm On Oct 18, 2017
Blooms of the bleeding heart plant (Dicentra spectabilis) appear in early spring adorning the garden with attention getting, heart shaped flowers borne on arching stems. Attractive bluish green foliage emerges first as the plant wakes from dormancy and flowers of the bleeding heart may be pink and white or solid white as with the bleeding heart cultivar ‘Alba’.

How to Grow Bleeding Hearts
Care for bleeding heart includes keeping the soil consistently moist by regular watering. The bleeding heart plant likes to be planted in organic soil in a shady or part shade area. Work compost into the area before planting the bleeding heart plant in fall or spring. Organic mulch breaks down over time to supply nutrients and helps retain moisture.
Growing bleeding hearts need a cool, shady area for optimum bloom in warmer southern zones, but farther north this specimen may bloom in a full sun location. An herbaceous perennial, the bleeding heart plant dies back to the ground as the heat of summer arrives. As the bleeding heart plant begins to yellow and wither away, foliage may be cut back to the ground as a part of care for bleeding heart. Do not remove the foliage before it turns yellow or brown; this is the time when your bleeding heart plant is storing food reserves for next year’s growing bleeding hearts.

Bleeding heart flower care includes regular fertilization of the growing bleeding heart. When foliage emerges in spring, time release plant food may be worked into the soil around the plant, as may additional compost. This is an important step in growing bleeding heart, as it encourages more and longer lasting blooms. Many are surprised that growing bleeding hearts is so simple. Once you are aware of how to grow bleeding hearts, you may want to use them to brighten dark and shady areas. Seeds of the growing bleeding heart may add more plants to the garden, but the surest method of propagation is to divide clumps every few years. Carefully dig up the roots of the bleeding heart, remove roots that are dried up and divide the rest. Plant these into other areas of the garden for an early spring show.

Agriculture / Check Out Tips About Lily Of The Nile by morrowgarden: 10:22am On Oct 09, 2017
Lily of the Nile, also known as Agapanthus or the African Blue Lily, is a genus of perennial flowering plants originating from South Africa. The name comes from the Greek words "agape," meaning love, and "anthus," meaning flower. This genus consists of about 10 different species. Agapanthus plants may have 20 to 100 flowers depending on the variety, and from May through June, they produce beautiful clusters of blue, white, or violet-blue flowers that resemble lilies. Depending on the species, they grow to be 2 feet high and 2-4 feet wide. There are both evergreen and deciduous types that flourish in Nigeria here. These plants are easy to maintain and are very popular because of their hardiness and attractiveness. Follow these steps to grow your own African Blue Lily and keep it in beautiful condition. Step 1 – Choose a Healthy Specimen Select a healthy looking plant from the nursery. Avoid plants that look dull and those that do not have many flowers or buds. Step 2 – Find a Good Planting Location An Agapanthus should only be planted in areas with full sun. Unless your climate is exceptionally hot, the plants need direct sunlight and plenty of space to thrive. If you are unsure of how your area’s sun exposure will affect the plant, keep in mind that this plant grows very well in containers. If you choose to use a container, you will be free to experiment with full sun, partial sun, and shaded areas as you grow. Plus if the plant ever becomes too large and cramped, you will be able to move it to a more open area. Step 3 – Prepare Your Soil After choosing the planting spot, dig a hole that is not too deep. Mix compost or fertilizer with the dug-out soil. The soil must be rich and well-drained. This plant prefers neutral to slightly acidic soil, with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Tip: Since proper drainage is important for the Lily of the Nile, consider adding a scoop of sand to the soil. Step 4 - Planting When transferring from a container, try to place the roots at the same depth as they were at in the pot or container. Even when planting directly, the roots should be placed no more than 1 foot from the soil surface. Once you’ve positioned your roots, fill the soil back, and fix the plant in place. Tip: If you are growing more than one plant at a time, space the rhizomes (thick bulb-like roots that grow underground) about 8 inches apart with the pointy ends facing up. Step 5 – Mulching and Watering Apply a couple of inches of organic mulch around the plant. Water the plant thoroughly, taking care not to flood the roots since the rhizomes can rot easily when things are too wet. You want to make sure the soil is always moist but not soaked. Keep an eye out for yellow-tipped leaves, as this is an indicator that you’re overwatering. Weekly watering is recommended, but if the summers and winters are unseasonably harsh, feel free to adjust accordingly. Step 6 – Fertilization During the growing stage, it is beneficial to fertilize the plant twice a month. For established plants, fertilizing is only required twice a year, once in the beginning of spring and again towards the end of fall. Apply a formula that provides equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, such as a 15-15-15 preparation. Step 7 – Pruning Every spring, prune the plant by removing any dead foliage and stems. Remove flowers that have bloomed and are beginning to wilt. If you regularly deadhead the flowers, you will see an abundant growth of newer flowers. Clumps can be divided every three to five years by splitting the root ball in late summer or early fall. It will then take about a year for newly divided plants to re-establish themselves. Agapanthus Care Frost Protect your African Blue Lily from frost in colder climates. If you are growing the plant in a pot or container, you can bring it indoors and place it under fluorescent lights or keep it in a warm greenhouse. If the plant is in your backyard, you must mulch the roots to protect them during winter. Pests Lily of the Nile is generally resistant to most pests and diseases. However, they may become infested with snails, thrips, mealy bugs, or by certain fungi. Be watchful of the plant and spray an appropriate fungicide or pesticide when necessary. Snails can devour the stems of the plant, causing considerable harm. You can remove them by hand, or use some kind of bait to get rid of them.

Agriculture / Check Out These 8 Great tips To Reduce Your Home's Energy Use, by morrowgarden: 10:19am On Sep 06, 2017
Given the crazy world we live in, with ever greater demands on our time, it's safe to say most of us are always looking to save more of it (and money, too!) in all areas of our lives- and around the house is no exception! Check out these 8 great tips to reduce your home's energy use, and therefore the numbers on your utility bill. PLUS a short guide of 4 tips on how to grow a lush, healthy, green lawn! Read on...   Fertilize Your Lawn for Summer Fertilizing a lawn is a springtime tradition for many homeowners. Winter can take its toll on a lawn, but fertilizer can go a long way toward helping a lawn recover from harsh weather. While lawn-and-garden enthusiasts might know the ins and outs of fertilizing a lawn, novices might need a little help as they look to restore their lawns. 1. Find out what your lawn needs. Even novice green thumbers likely know that overfertilization can harm a lawn, and that’s a big reason many homeowners approach fertilizing their lawn with some trepidation. A lush lawn adds to the curb appeal of a home, while a lawn that’s patchy or appears to be poorly taken care of can lower property value. Before fertilizing a lawn, obtain a soil test to determine if the lawn has any nutrient deficiencies. 2. Don’t overdo it with nitrogen. Fertilizing with too much nitrogen is a common mistake, as too much nitrogen can be harmful, decreasing root growth and increasing a lawn’s susceptibility to disease. A slow-release fertilizer may be an option, as such fertilizers break down nutrients over a longer period of time, which also allows homeowners to extend the intervals between fertilizing sessions. But a lawn can get nitrogen from other sources as well. Such sources include grass clippings or raked leaves left on the lawn after being shredded by a mulching mower. 3. Consider using granules instead of spray. Spraying a lawn with fertilizer might seem like the easiest and quickest way to fertilize, but spraying is typically best left to the professionals. That’s because novices often struggle to evenly apply the fertilizer when spraying, and many do not account for the wind when spraying fertilizer. A traditional spreader that fertilizes a lawn with granules makes it easier for nonprofessionals to apply the fertilizer accurately and evenly. Before fertilizing with granules, read the package to determine if you need to water the lawn before application, as some fertilizers are only effective when applied to a lawn after it has been watered. Also, be sure to fill the spreader on asphalt instead of the lawn. Chances are you’re going to spill granules when filling the spreader, and such spills can be harmful to the lawn. 4. Plan to fertilize several times. Some homeowners only fertilize twice a year—once in the spring and then once again in the fall. But fertilizer should be applied multiple times throughout the year, beginning in the early spring. The first time to fertilize is when the soil temperature reaches roughly 55 degrees Fahrenheit, which is often evident because grass typically starts to grow again when the soil reaches that temperature. Fertilize again roughly a month after fertilizer is first applied, and then do so every six to eight weeks after through October. Professionals often recommend using an organic material during the third fertilizing session.

QUEEN PALM

Also known as feather palm, queen palm (Syagrus romanzoffianum) is a lush, graceful palm with interesting gray bark and glossy fronds that reach more than 10 feet long. At maturity, queen palms reache heights of 30 to 40 feet. In warm weather, the tree produces waxy flowers, soon replaced by clusters of small, orange dates.

(1)
Water the queen palm deeply and slowly with a soaker hose or let a garden hose trickle at the base of the tree. Provide enough water to soak the soil to a depth of 2 to 3 feet, wetting the soil around the trunk to a width of about 5 feet. Repeat every other week throughout summer, decreasing to every four to six weeks in winter. Adjust as necessary to allow for rainfall. The queen palm is not drought-tolerant and needs regular watering.

(2)
Apply a fertilizer formulated specifically for palms in mid-spring and early summer at the rate suggested on the label. Scatter the fertilizer evenly on the soil under the canopy, and then water deeply. Palm fertilizer contains necessary amounts of nitrogen, as a lack of nitrogen causes the fronds to turn yellow or pale green. Palm fertilizer also contains potassium, which prevents yellowing of leaves in older plants.

(3)
Pull loose fronds and cut off those that are dead, damaged or diseased. Cut off fruit clusters that hang over sidewalks or walkways. Remove suckers or small palms that sprout at the base of the tree. Prune queen palm once or twice every year to improve the appearance of the tree. It's healthiest for the tree to leave all green fronds in place. Never cut off green fronds that point up or grow horizontally.

(4)
Spray the palm periodically with a garden hose to remove dust and prevent mites and other insects that hide in the fronds. Cleaning is especially important for palms growing near the ocean as it removes salt buildup on the leaves.
