PropertiesNot Every Property Problem Is A Price Problem by mosaic77(op): 12:50pm On Feb 20
Not every property problem is a price problem.
Most times, it is a documentation problem.

This week, we have been having conversations around Certificates of Occupancy, Governor’s Consent, registered deeds, and seller legitimacy.

What we have noticed is this:

Many buyers do not lose money because they didn’t have funds.
They lose money because they didn’t verify.

Real estate in Nigeria is not just about finding land.
It is about understanding:

• Who owns it
• What rights exist on it
• Whether it can legally be transferred
• And if the seller even has authority to sell

Mosaic, we approach transactions from a documentation first mindset.

Because ownership clarity is more important than square meters.

If you are investing, build with structure.
If you are selling, operate with transparency.

The market is evolving. Professionals must evolve with it.

PropertiesHow Proper Facility Maintenance Boosts Business Performance by mosaic77(op):
First impressions are invaluable. The building that houses your business is often the very first thing customers and clients see. It should reflect your company’s professionalism, integrity, stability, and the quality of the products or services you provide. Facility maintenance is not simply an occasional task to check off a list. A strategic and proactive maintenance approach can significantly influence your company’s overall performance, reputation, and long-term success.

With this in mind, Mosaic has compiled the following facility maintenance tips and recommendations to help your business maintain a professional appearance and operate at its best:

Compliance
The first and most important rule of facility maintenance is ensuring that your residential, retail, or commercial property remains fully compliant and properly maintained at all times.

This includes maintaining accessible areas such as ramps and restrooms, ensuring all emergency exits are clearly marked and unobstructed, and meeting all applicable safety codes and regulatory requirements. Staying proactive with compliance not only protects your business from costly violations and penalties but also safeguards your employees, customers, and reputation.

Work with your facility maintenance provider to conduct an initial property assessment. Request a comprehensive compliance checklist and routine inspection plan to help prevent code violations and ensure your facility consistently meets required standards.

Lighting Maintenance
A clean, professional appearance begins with proper lighting. If customers or clients struggle to see clearly or feel unsafe due to poor lighting conditions. They are unlikely to stay or return. Maintaining a well structured facility is essential to both safety and business success. This includes routinely replacing broken or burned-out bulbs, malfunctioning ballasts, and damaged fixtures to ensure consistent shinning throughout your property.

In larger facilities, lighting components are often located in high or hard to reach areas. Rather than risking employee safety, consult your facility maintenance provider about scheduling regular lighting inspections and walkthroughs. Proactive lighting maintenance not only enhances appearance but also improves safety, energy efficiency, and customer experience.

Replace Broken Materials/Equipment
If you are like most businesses then you are always looking for ways to reduce overhead costs. However, it’s important not to take that search too far especially when it comes to replacements. Cutting corners on essential repairs can end up costing you more in the long run.

For example, exposed ductwork may create an unsightly appearance that reflects poorly on your business. Over time, water damage and general wear can also lead to unsafe conditions for both customers and employees. Investing in proper replacement and maintenance not only preserves your facility’s image but also protects your people and your operation.

Vent Maintenance
Air quality is something many of us take for granted. But when it comes to creating an environment your customers or clients feel safe and comfortable in. It pays to have your ducts and vents cleaned regularly.

Not only is a dust-clogged vent an eyesore, but it may also result in allergic reactions for some customers or clients. What’s more, without proper cleaning techniques and procedures, your facility’s air ducts can become a breeding ground for harmful mould or fungus.

Flooring Maintenance and Repair
You might not think that the ground beneath your customers’ feet can affect your bottom line, but you’d be wrong. When this essential surface falls into disrepair, it not only affects the quality of your customers’ first impressions, it can also pose a significant hazard.

Things like broken tiles and torn carpets can result in costly slip/fall claims and lawsuits. If your facility experiences a flooring issue, be sure to put out clear signage or cordon off the area altogether before calling your maintenance provider and requesting emergency service.

Painting Projects
Nothing makes your retail or commercial location shine like a new coat of paint. Unless, of course, you call in an amateur. Professional painting services are worth every penny when you are striving to create an ideal retail experience.

Not only does a professional have the skills and experience to get your job done fast and minimize the impact on your customers, but the quality of your company’s appearance also depends on the proper application techniques that only a pro knows.

Electrical System Check-Ups and Upgrades
Without the necessary electricity infrastructure in place, it’s lights out for your company. A good facility maintenance provider will provide regular system check-ups to make sure you have the “bandwidth” to keep your business running smoothly around the clock.

Keeping your retail or commercial location up to date and looking good is good for business. With your company’s reputation on the line, finding the right facility maintenance provider is essential. The company you trust to help you make that critical first impression with clients and customers needs to understand your business and its needs.

Nobody knows your facility better than the people who built it. Most quality build out providers also offer facility maintenance services like those listed above. Be sure to ask about facility maintenance and update services when partnering with your retail construction and build-out provider. Then, when an issue or emergency arises, you can rest assured that you and your facility are covered.

Do not let maintenance issues disrupt your operations.
Let MOSAIC help you maintain a safe, professional facility without the hassle.

There is a place for coincidence...

There is also the increased likelihood of death through strained physical exercise or high risk behaviour.

Both of which are likely to happen in this particular circumstance (White House, Number 10 or Aso Rock)

PoliticsTHE VILLA CURSE: What You Don't Know About The Nigerian Presidential Villa by mosaic77(op): 4:22pm On May 07, 2018
Do you know a lot of Nigerians believe an Angel of Death stalks our corridors of power, The Presidential Villa?

Anyway, what is this Villa curse?

Find out here.

 The History

There are a lot of State Houses in Africa. But it is only few that can match our Aso Rock in majesty and global power projection.
Yes, it is the name of the executive office and official residence of the Nigerian President. It might not be as glamorous as the White House. It might not also be as historic as the Cheong Wa Dae of South Korea. But it is still the seat of government of the most powerful black nation in the world.

Aso Rock derived its name from Aso Rock, a 400 metres monolith located at the outskirt of Abuja. It is about 936 metres above sea level. The word "Aso" means “victory” in the native language of the aborigines, the Asokoro people.

In 1976, the Military Government of Murtala Mohammed took the decision to relocate the Federal Capital Territory away from Lagos to a more central location. A few years later, the construction of Abuja as the Federal Capital Territory began. During this period, The Aguda House temporarily served as the official residence of the President.

But today, the Vice President of Nigeria uses the Aguda House as his official residence.

President Ibrahim Babangida commenced the construction of the Presidential Villa in 1985 after he took office. In 1991 he completed the Presidential Villa. Then he moved in on 12th  December .

The Villa was the venue of the Aso Rock Declaration. The Heads of Government of the Common Wealth of Nations issued this Declaration in 2003. This was during the 18th session of the Common Wealth Heads of Government Meeting.

The session was attended by 51 participants, out of which 38 were Heads of Government.

The Presidency

The Aso Rock is the seat of the Presidency. It is located within the 3 Arms Zone. This Zone contains the headquarters of the 3 arms of Nigerian governments; the Presidential Villa, the National Assembly and the Supreme Court.
The Presidency is the collective name for all agencies under the executive branch of government. It is made up of the Office of the President, Office of the Vice President, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, the Office of the National security Adviser, Parastatals and the State House Administration.

The Chief of Staff to the President manages the Office of the President. He is also in charge of the President’s schedules and correspondences.

The State House Permanent Secretary oversees the State House administration, while the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation monitors and coordinates the implementation of government policies and programmes.

The Villa Curse

It is believed that all those who had lived at The Aso Rock for over three years had lost a spouse or relation to death while in power, while those that managed to stay less than the said number of years only end up losing a spouse under mysterious circumstances after leaving office.
These occurrences have become so regular that it is now identified as the “the villa curse”.

General Sani Abacha died after 4 years as Head of State in June 1998. It was speculated that some prostitutes extrajudicially executed him through poisoning.

President Olusegun Obasanjo in October 2005 lost his wife to abdominoplasty in Spain, 2 years after winning his second term.

In 2010, President Yar’Adua died in Saudi Arabia as a result of Pericarditis while President Jonathan lost his brother to untimely death after succeeding him. His wife, Patience underwent over 12 operations as a result of strange life-threatening abdominal affliction. The symptoms mysteriously disappeared without any trace and medical explanation after leaving the Aso Rock

President Buhari has spent more time in medical treatment abroad than any President in the history of Nigeria ever since he took up residence at The Villa. Just a few months ago, he almost lost his only son in a motorbike accident.

President Babangida who spent only 2 years at the Aso rock lost his wife to Ovarian cancer in 2009 after leaving The Villa, while Ernest Shonekan who was wise enough to refused to stay at the Villa but preferred the Aguda House and General Abdulsalami who unselfishly transferred power to civilian rule were the only ones that left the Aso Rock unscathed. Unfortunately, he lost his Vice to cancer in 2013.

Do you believe an Angel of Death stalks our corridors of power? Do you believe in this Villa curse?

I don’t.

But, what do you think?

EducationHow To Get Cheap Accommodation In UNILAG by mosaic77(op): 4:53pm On Apr 27, 2018
I guess you are a student of UNILAG. You are here because you are not ready for life inside the school hostel. So you are looking for a cheap accommodation that will match your lean budget.

This is a nice decision.

But I must warn you; this is not going to be easy. The average price of a flat in Yaba is about ₦ 660,000 in a year, with the most expensive ones going as high as ₦ 30 million per annum. Again you need to understand that out of the 58,000 students of UNILAG there are only 8,000-bed spaces. This means you have to fight with the other 50,000 for a cheap accommodation lipsrsealed.

I guess this is really bad news embarassed.

But luckily for you, you are here cheesy. You are going to learn how to beat the competition and get cheap accommodation in UNILAG.

All you need to do is to follow these 7 actionable tips and then thank me later grin.

Go for a moderate apartment

Forget the luxury apartments for now!

You are in UNILAG to learn and not to show off. Don’t even forget you have a lean budget in the first place. So this has already placed some constraints on you. So it is important you go for apartments with moderate facilities that can serve your basic needs. But you need to understand your comfort as a student is not something you should compromise on.

Consider sharing room

Get a good apartment and split the cost with your friend.

If you are an easy going person like me, then I will advise you to consider this option. This will not only cut your future expenses by half but will also provide you with a companion to chat and run around town with.

Be an early bird

Early birds eat the fattest worm wink.

Sorry I am not calling you a bird. Lol. But sometimes you need to behave like one to have the best chance of success. Don’t forget you are not the only one looking for cheap accommodation in UNILAG. In fact, 8,000 students were admitted into the school this 2017/2018 academic session while less than that number left, because of various reasons ranging from school fees and carry-over. This only means stiffer competition for cheap accommodation in Lagos. So it is important you have your money ready and close the deal once you are satisfied with the condition of the apartment.

Know all the agents

Get the names of the top Agents in UNILAG and try to know them personally.

Agents play an important role in Real Estate. Sometimes it is impossible or near impossible to let an apartment in Lagos without going through them. So knowing them personally will assist you to stay ahead of other competitors. So discuss with them the type of apartment you need and the size of your budget. This will enable them to tip you off immediately any becomes available.

Talk to your friends

Don’t just stop with the Agents.  Talk to your friends.

Your friends can also be a source of valuable information. Even if they can’t help you immediately, but the truth is they will know someone who knows someone that knows a person that can help you. Apart from this, they might even know the bad Agents or the “no-go areas” to live within the environ. They would be glad to share this knowledge with you. So it is important you use your friends when looking for a cheap apartment in UNILAG and their network of friends.

Eye final year students

Seek recommendations from final year students.

This is the easiest way to get cheap accommodation in UNILAG. It is unfortunate a lot of people are not taking advantage of this. Luckily you are heresmiley. Take a tour of the area you want to live and identify the apartments that appeal to you most. Talk to the final year students living there about the possibility of hooking you up with the Landlord once their rents are up. A simple recommendation from them will definitely give you an edge over others.

Squat with a friend

Lol. shocked

Squating is a popular cliché among Nigerian students meaning to stay with a friend till you get your accommodation. Getting cheap accommodation in UNILAG is never an easy task. So it is advisable you take your time to look for one that will match your budget without compromising your comfort and safety. It is advisable you stay with a friend throughout the period you are doing this. This will not only save you from stress but will also give you free accommodation throughout the period you will be looking for the accommodation.

Who doesn’t want free things? cheesy

Properties6 Ways To Get Rid Of Rats In Your Home by mosaic77(op): 4:59pm On Apr 12, 2018
You are here because rats have virtually driven you out of your home.

I have bad news for you. Rats are known carriers of several types of diseases that can lead to serious illness and in some cases, even death. They are the carrier of the Lassa fever that has claimed 43 lives in just 2 months in Nigeria. There were 615 reported cases of the fever while 193 cases were confirmed positive. This is a freaking 23.9% fatality rate.

Sorry, I have one more bad news. Rats breed easily. They reach sexual maturity at about 4 to 5 weeks and have a litter size of 6 to 12 pubs. They can wean the pubs after 21 days. This means just within 3 weeks you will have additional 6 to 12 rats running around your property scavenging for foods and invading your space.

I guess you are here because you need proven ways to get rid of rats in your home, not to hear some bad news.

Anyway, we still have good news for you.

To get rid of rats in your home is so easy. All you need to do is to follow these proven ways. They will not cost you much, but just a little time and minimal energy.

Block rat holes

Find the entry points and block them.

Rats are known to have strong teeth and claws. With these, they can dig holes through a building and cut through woods with their teeth. Identifying the holes and setting up effective barriers is a great way to start. This will trap those inside  in the building for easy elimination while shutting out those outside.

Set rat traps

Place various traps at different strategic places to either catch the rats alive or kill them immediately.

Before setting the traps, make sure you eliminate all their food sources. This is important because naturally, rats are wary of unknown objects on their established foraging paths. This scepticism can make trapping a rat particularly difficult for a homeowner. So making them hungry would make them take the bait. It is important you handle the dead rats carefully. This is because they can expose you to health risks.

Ensure good sanitation

Maintain a clean environment at all times, and make this a culture.

A dirty environment is what attracts rats to your home and give them reasons to start co-habiting with you. It is necessary you clean up your environment. Make sure the trash cans are always disposed and properly closed. Remove clutters from your home to deny them hiding places. Destroy their shelter and breeding places.

Use ultrasonic pest repellents

Rats hate sounds. Use this to your advantage. The idea of using sounds to drive rats away was first used by the Chinese 5000 years ago. So this is a proven way to get rid of rats in your home because rats are so sensitive to sounds. Installing an ultrasonic device can emit sounds that can drive rodents away by making them confused, convulse or even die. Fortunately, the sounds are not detectable by human ears.

Don’t forget the cats

Cats prey on rats. Having them around your home can scare rats away.

If you have not watched Tom and Jerry, then you might doubt the effectiveness of using cats to maintain a rat-free home. Healthy cats have the energy and interest to hunt rats. Having them in your home can help you to get rid of rats. They are also important in preventing reinfestation of rats.

Use a professional

Using rat Exterminators shouldn’t be the last resort. Make it part of the overall plan.

You can rid your home of rats, but what about reinfestation? Do you have any plan on how to tackle that? Even if you do, how do you intend to handle the health risks associated with the exposure to dead rats and rat poisons? This is why it is advisable you consider using a pest control professional, especially if you are dealing with an infestation of large-scale dimension.

Speaking with Mosaic can help you to develop a rat removal plan that will match your needs and budget.

PropertiesTop 6 Fire Safety Measures You Should Consider For Your Home by mosaic77(op): 4:45pm On Apr 12, 2018
Do you know that fire outbreak has cost Nigeria about 6 Trillion Naira in the last five years?

In case you don’t understand what this figure means. It can pay 500,000 Nigerian Graduates a gross annual salary of 1.2 Million Naira for 10 years or engage over 8.3 Million Nigerians for 2 years under the N-Power Program. If we use the 2018 Abia State budget as a benchmark, it can finance the Abia State budget for about 42 years or that of Zamfara State for about 45 years.

So you have seen how lack of fire safety measures is costing us as a National. These facts are scary. The bad news is there is no way we can tackle this at the national level if we fail to implement fire safety measures in our respective homes. For this reason, it is important to educate everyone.

So here are the top 6 fire safety measures you should consider for your home.

Fire risk assessment

Carry out a holistic assessment of your home to identify the fire risk level.

The purpose of this assessment is to identify all the likely things that might cause a fire in your home, the likely people at risk and what you need to do prevent that from happening. It assesses the building to develop the best fire escape plan. This is a critical fire safety measure. Getting this wrong can be so catastrophic, so it is important you appoint a good fire safety Professional to carry out this assessment.

Install smoke alarm

Mount Smoke detection devices. This will help you to contain the fire at its early stage.

“There is no smoke without a fire”. This is a popular cliché in Nigeria. Installing smoke detectors at strategic places, especially the areas with greater fire risk will alert you immediately of possible fire outbreak when smoke starts building up in your home. This will enable you to take immediate actions to contain the fire, especially if you are using a good smoke detector in Nigeria.

Acquire fire extinguisher

Acquire and place fire extinguishers at locations where they can easily be accessed.

A good fire extinguisher will help you fight the fire heads on immediately the detection system alerts you to a possible fire occurrence. This is necessary because the first minute of any fire outbreak is the most crucial.

Protect inflammable materials

Since it is not possible to eliminate all inflammable materials in a home, try at least to protect them from direct exposure to fire.

Fire will not burn without fuel. It is inflammable materials that provide fuel for a fire to thrive. Try to avoid this by protecting these materials from direct exposure to fire or anything that might ignite a fire. Try to follow all the OSHA guidelines when dealing with inflammable materials.

Develop a fire escape plan

Don’t forget to have a contingency plan in case something happens.

Even the best safety measures can fail. So it is always important to have a plan to fall back on when things go “south”. A good escape plan will create a rallying point and an escape route during a fire outbreak. It will organise the home such that the exit pathways will always be free for immediate evacuation. It is not possible to design a good escape plan without professional inputs. This is because it will take into account the architectural layout of the building and also the size of people living in the house. So it is important you consult a professional. He will help you develop a plan that will suit all possible scenarios.

Regular fire drills

Practice regularly to master the escape plan.

An escape plan is useless if the people it is meant for cannot activate it. The truth is a sudden blast of the smoke alarm can send people to panic attacks. So regular fire drills will familiarize the people on what to do in events of such outbreak. Don’t forget it is the duty of a Fire Safety Officer to conduct the drills. It is important you understand this very well.

Many lives have been lost to fire outbreak in Nigeria. Implementing fire safety measures might not just save your properties but also your life.

PoliticsIs Lagos’ Land Use Charge Really Oppressive in 2026? by mosaic77(op):
In 2026, Lagos State’s Land Use Charge (LUC) remains one of the most talked‑about fiscal policies affecting property owners across Nigeria’s largest city. Whether it is truly oppressive depends on whom you ask, residents, the government, property investors, or civil society groups because each group has very different experiences and stakes in how the policy affects daily life.

Let's us break down what the Land Use Charge is, how it’s evolved, the criticisms it attracts, and whether it can fairly be labelled oppressive in 2026.

What Exactly Is the Lagos Land Use Charge?

The Land Use Charge is an annual property tax imposed on all properties in Lagos State, brought under the Land Use Charge Law of 2020. It replaces older levies like ground rent, tenement rate and neighbourhood improvement charge, merging them into a single annual payment based on the assessed value of a property. The tax applies to owners of developed properties, vacant land, and even lessees with long leases, and remains a major revenue source for the state.

Changes & Policy Direction in 2026
In January 2026, Lagos implemented significant amendments to the Land Use Charge regime through the Land Use Charge (Amendment) Law 2025.

The key reforms have included:
1. Higher surcharges on undeveloped land (a 100% penalty on unused plots to discourage land hoarding).
2. Incentives for green certified buildings, offering exemptions of 25 –100% depending on sustainability standards.
3. Mandatory digital payment portal with BVN, streamlining compliance but also making the process stricter.

These shifts reflect government goals of encouraging development, capturing revenue from neglected assets, and formalising land records, a significant push that many argue is modernising the city’s property taxation.

Why Some Residents Say It Is Oppressive
Despite reforms and incentives, many Lagosians still see the Land Use Charge as burdensome:

1. High Relative Cost for Property Owners: For ordinary owners, especially middle class and lower income residents, annual land taxes particularly on commercial or rented properties can feel heavy, especially when combined with the city’s high cost of living and rent levels.

2. Historical Resistance: The Land Use Charge was met with intense opposition in earlier years, with human rights groups and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) protesting dramatic hikes that were described as oppressive and arbitrary. The memory of those clashes still shapes popular sentiment about the tax, even if the current rates have been adjusted.

3. Compliance Difficulties: Low compliance remains a concern: one government official noted that less than 7% of enrolled households had paid the charge in prior years, even after incentives were offered.

4. Enforcement Tools: Authorities have threatened measures like publishing names of defaulters and pursued legal sanctions to compel payment moves seen by critics as heavy handed. For many citizens, these features reinforce a feeling that the policy imposes costs without direct, visible returns on services or infrastructure.

Why Some See It as Fair and Necessary
On the other hand, Lagos government officials and many urban planners argue the Land Use Charge is neither unreasonable nor oppressive but rather an essential tool for financing a rapidly growing megacity:

1. Consolidation & Simplicity: Through merging of multiple property levies into one, the LUC simplifies taxation and creates a single, predictable annual obligation.

2. Revenue for Development: The Land Use Charge now contributes significant revenue to the state’s internally generated revenue pool, with billions collected and reinvested in infrastructure and services.

3. Incentives & Discounts: Lagos routinely offers incentives such as 15% early payment discounts and expanded exemptions for certain categories of property, aiming to ease the burden on compliant owners.

4. Modernising Tax Administration: Efforts like online appeal platforms for property owners abroad reduce obstacles and give all taxpayers a mechanism to challenge unfair assessments.

These measures reflect an attempt to balance revenue generation with more efficient and equitable processes.

So, Is It Oppressive in 2026?

The answer is not simple:
For some property owners, especially those in lower value brackets or struggling with broader economic pressures, the Land Use Charge feels heavy, opaque, or punitive. Lack of visible service improvements tied to the tax deepens this sentiment.

For policymakers and many economists, it is a rational and modern property tax, crucial for funding Lagos’ development without overly reliance on federal transfers or debt.

Whether the charge is “oppressive” depends on individual circumstances like property value, income level, and how fairly one’s assessment reflects true worth and perceptions of how transparently revenue is managed.

In 2026, Lagos’ Land Use Charge is not universally oppressive, but it does impose real financial obligations that resonate more heavily with some groups than others. While reforms aim to rationalize the system, public suspicion rooted in past hikes and enforcement actions still colours debates about fairness and burden.

As with most tax policies, the conflict reflects broader tensions between revenue needs for urban development and equity for property owners trying to manage the cost of living in a fast‑changing megacity.

Now, from your own view. Is It Oppressive?

Summary

The Great wall of Benin was constructed over a period of 600 years. Its foundation is over 1000 years older than the Sokoto Caliphate, 500 years older than the Oyo Empire and over 100 years older than the Nri Kingdom.

What more do you know?

The History

The Great Walls of Benin has stood over 1,200 years of Benin history to be recognized as an international monument. Though it is no longer standing, it is still one that conjures emotions in the mind of the Benin people.

It might not be as famous as the Great Wall of China or as beautiful as the city walls of Dubrovnik in Croatia, but it is at one time in history the largest man-made structure in the world ever carried out prior to the mechanical era.

The Great Walls of Benin was constructed over a period 600 years. Its foundation is over 500 years older than the Oyo Empire, about 1000 years older than the Sokoto Caliphate and over 100 years older than the Nri kingdom.

What we know as the Great Wall of Benin is nothing but a rampart and moat constructed around the ancient kingdom of Benin. The excavated earth from the moat was used to form the walls. They were both used as a defence for the ancient city.

The moat was dug by the might of the Edo people. It was estimated to take over 150 million hours of digging. If this digging is to be done today, it would have cost over 1.08 billion dollars for just labour using the USA’s federal minimum wage per hour.

This amount is equal to about 330 billion Naira in today’s official exchange rate. This amount can build 3 second Niger Bridges and still pay 2500 unemployed graduates an annual gross salary of 1.2 million Naira for 10 years.

Construction work on the wall began around 800 AD and ended mid-1400.

The Facts

The Great walls of Benin, apart from being the second largest man-made structure after the Great Wall of China, it is also the largest man-made earthwork in the world.

It was estimated to extend for about 16000 Km in length; both the exterior and interior walls. It occupied a land mass of 6500 km2, which is about 37 percent of the present land mass of Edo State.

In the year 1897, less than 500 after the completion of the Great Wall, the British led an expedition that ravaged the walls. This expedition destroyed about 1,100 years of Benin history and one of the evidence of African civilization.

It was led by Admiral Sir Harry Rawson during the reign of Oba Ovonramwen, in a military campaigned termed “The Punitive Expedition”. The expeditionary force was made up of 1,200 British soldiers. It brought an end to the great Benin Kingdom and led to the looting numerous Benin historical artefacts. The arts were relocated to Britain. They sit majestically in various British museums reminding visitors of the British impunity of 1897.

In 1995, the Great Walls of Benin was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in the cultural category.

In conclusion

The Great Walls of Benin was located at the southern border of the Great Benin Kingdom. For over 400 years it protected about 500 villages that made up the kingdom. It defended the sacred traditions and civilization of the Edo people until the punitive expedition.

Though sitting in ruins now, the Great Walls of Benin tell the story of what an African mind can do. It tells the story of the resilience of an average African person.

Celebrate this city today.

The History

For 173 years, Lagos has been arguably home to the oldest storey building in Nigeria.

The famous white one-storey building in Badagry is believed to be the oldest storey building in Nigeria. It might not be as old at the English’s Dover Castle. But it has stood over 170 years of Nigerian history to be recognized as a national monument.

Rev. Henry Townsend of the Church Missionary Society laid the foundation of the building in 1842, and it was completed 3 years later in 1845. The building was the cradle of western education in Nigeria. It was the site of the first school in Nigeria, the Nursery of infant Church. The school was founded by Rev. Golmer, and it was later renamed St, Thomas’ Anglican Nursery and Primary School.

The building was occupied by Bishop Ajayi Crowther, the first Anglican Bishop in Africa around the mid-1980s when he was translating the English Holy Bible to the Yoruba language.

The two copies of the Bible are presently preserved in a glass case in a room in the building. The English copy of the bible is presently 173 years old while the completed version is 170 years old.

The Records

The building is the Custodian of the oldest Bible written in an indigenous language in Nigeria. It is also reputed to be the first place Christianity was preached in Nigeria. This happened precisely at the site of the fallen Agiya tree by Thomas Birch Freeman and presently, a monument is standing there immortalizing that spot.

This building holds historical values to Christians in Nigeria. It attracts about 2000 visitors every year. But in 2016, 5140 people visited the old site while 9009 people visited in 2017.

The Controversies

History books tell us that the building is the oldest in Nigeria, but is this really true?

Some people claim that the 50-feet Gobarau Minaret is the oldest storey building in Nigeria. They claimed that this Minaret was built around 1348-1398. This was even before Nigeria had contact with the Europeans. This date makes the Minaret over 400 years older than the building in Badagry.

But you can tell us what you think by dropping a comment...

PoliticsThe Pride Of The East: The Coal City. by mosaic77(op):
SUMMARY:

Enugu suffered heavy bombardment during the civil war, but in 2014 the Coal city became the first city in Nigeria to be named in the Top 100 Most Resilient Cities In The World, out of 350 global cities that applied for consideration.

What more do you know about this city? Find out more from below.

The History

There are a lot of beautiful cities in Nigeria, but only few can match the Coal City in beauty and majesty.

Yes, the Coal City is the pet name of Enugu City. Enugu is neither a boring nor dirty city, it is just a city sitting majestically on top of coal. It is the Pride of the East.

It might not be as ancient as Benin City, but it has weathered through a lot of storms to become the first city in Nigeria to be recognised in the Top 100 most Resilient Cities in the World by the Rockefeller Foundation.

Enugu exudes a lifestyle that is summed up in a way of life known as 042. This is the popular cliché for the Coal City. It is one that conjures strong emotions in the mind of Ndi Igbo.

042 is the telephone code for the city of Enugu. Though this might just be a number, to Ndi Igbo, it is a fashionable reference to the cool, calm, collected lifestyle and bubbling nightlife that is unique only to the Coal City.

Enugu was founded on a hilltop where it derives its name enu ugwu. Since the 17th century, the area known as Enugu has been inhabited by the Nike People. In 1903, Enugu had its first contact with the Europeans. This happened when the British geologist Albert Kitson led an exploration in search of solid minerals.

Just 14 after its first contact with the Europeans, Enugu officially acquired township status.

The Records

Though sitting majestically on top of a hill already, the Coal City can never be separated from the Milken hill. This famous hill was named after Engineer Milken. He was the Head Engineer that designed the road that led to the coal mine at the foot of the Milken hill. This 4.8km road holds the record as the first tarred road to the Coal City.

Coal was first discovered in Nigeria in Enugu 1909 by Albert Kitson when he was prospecting for silver. In 1914 the first shipment of coal was made to the UK.

From the first shipment to the discovery of oil, Enugu was not just a major source of revenue to the government but was also strategic to the British interests.

The industrial revolution in Nigeria could be attributed to the discovery of coal in Enugu.

Enugu sits at about 223 feet above sea level. It is approximately a 3-hour drive at 80Kmh from its nearest Seaport in Port Harcourt, 1-hour drive from the largest market in West Africa and about 2 hours drive from Aba.

Enugu is the only city in Nigeria to serve as a capital city for 7 times. It is only closely followed by Ibadan which served as the capital of the defunct Western religion and is presently the capital of Oyo State.

But for Enugu, from serving as the capital of the Southern Provinces, it became the capital of the Eastern Region (now divided into nine States), then the capital of Republic of Biafra, thereafter, the capital of East Central State, Anambra State, (old) Enugu State, and now the capital of the present Enugu State through a process of state creation and diffusion of administrative authority.

The Recognitions

The Coal City is the home of the famous Enugu Rangers Football club. This is the most successful professional football club in Nigeria. Though it shares that status with Enyimba F.C, for now, it is the only one that has never gone to relegation.

Enugu suffered heavy bombardment during the war. In spite of this, in 2014 it became the first city in Nigeria to be named in the Top 100 most resilient cities in the world. Enugu made the list of the 35 cities that were selected out of the 350 global cities that applied. It made this list in the same year with Barcelona, Spain; Paris, France; London, England and Athens of Greece. This means just like the other 35 cities, Enugu is now a model for global cities seeking to build their own resilience.

The Coal City is very serene and has a unique lifestyle. As a result of this, many people believe it is the best place to raise kids in Nigeria.

Do you believe this? Anyway, don’t forget to Share!

PoliticsThis Is Our Lagos: The Third Mainland Bridge. by mosaic77(op):
The History

The Ibrahim Babangida Bridge has been the longest bridge in Nigeria since 1990.

Yes. Ibrahim Babangida Bridge is the official name of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. It was commissioned by General Ibrahim Babangida in 1990. It might not be as glamorous as the London Bridge or the Golden Gate Bridge in the USA but it is still an engineering masterpiece that conjures emotion among Nigerians, especially Lagosians.

The Third Mainland Bridge is one of the three bridges that connect the Lagos mainland to the Island. It snakes through Lagos State, from Oworonshoki over the lagoon to the Adeniji Adele interchange on the Lagos Island.

Construction work on the bridge was abandoned by previous governments and there were fears among the people that the bridge is another project bound for oblivion.

The American press ran a television programme titled "The Squandering of Riches" in the early 1980s to criticize how African leaders embark on white elephant projects. The Lead Presenter predicted the abandoned bridge would meet the same fate. This challenged Brig. Gen Ibrahim Babangida and his informed his desire to change the narratives.

Shortly after assuming leadership of the government in 1985, General Babangida began major moves to commence work on the Third Mainland Bridge through government and private partnership. The Federal Government, the Lagos State Government led by Raji Rasaki and the private company, PGH formed the partnership.

The bridge was constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc for less than 1 billion Naira.

The Records

The Third Mainland Bridge was the longest bridge in Africa for 6 years but it lost that status to the 6th October Bridge in Cairo in 1996. It is currently the second longest in Africa and arguably the 57th in the whole world. The bridge has about half the length of the 6th October Bridge and it is over 8 times longer than the second busiest bridge in Nigeria, the Niger bridge in Onitsha. It has a length that is longer than that of the two other mainland bridges; Eko and Carter Bridges combined.

The Third Mainland Bridge has 8 lanes and carries only vehicular traffic. Driving through the bridge offers spectacular views of the Lagos lagoon, the University of Lagos waterfront and Makoko the floating slum built on the Lagos lagoon. It takes about 10 – 15 minutes to drive through the bridge.

The Controversies

In 2006, commuters complained about the noticeable vibration of the bridge. This led the government to partially close the bridge for repairs. It was executed by Borini and Prono Co. (Nig) Ltd for 1.05 billion Naira and involves the removal of 8 defective expansion joints. The bridge was re-opened in October 2012 to traffic.

However, 4 months after the re-opening of the bridge, Mr Ashaf, the Senator representing Lagos East lamented that the repair works done on Third Mainland Bridge by the Ministry of Works, were mere window dressing on the expansion joints of which some parts had since become disjointed. This was however denied by the authorities.

But do you know a lot of people believe the name Ibrahim Babangida Bridge couldn’t stick to the bridge because of the June 12th saga?

What do you think?
