Osun state’s chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday declared that the factional national secretary of the party, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, was on his own, stressing that his position did not represent that of the party in the state. Prince Oyinlola, former governor of the state, was last Saturday, appointed secretary of former vice president Atiku Abubakar-led faction of PDP, in Abuja. But the party in the state, after an emergency meeting attended by stakeholders of the party, said it was opposed to any form of factionalisation of the party in whatever guise. In the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting by the chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Gani Olaoluwa, the party insisted that it has implicit confidence in the leadership of the party at the national level. Similarly, the communiqué also passed a vote of confidence on president Good luck Jonathan and the newly elected working committee led by Alhaji Bamangar Tukur and other newly elected working committee members. The party promised that come 2014 gubernatorial election in Osun State, PDP was assured of victory and will also deliver the state for President Goodluck Jonathan come 2015 presidential election. According to the communiqué: “The party in Osun is ever formidable and as such will not support factionalisation while urging any member that has any issue with the party to follow the path of consultation rather than confrontation.” The meeting, according to the communiqué, was attended by Alhaji Shuaibu Oyedokun, a member of BOT, Erelu Olusola Obada, Minister of Defence, Dr Olu Alabi, Engr Jide Adeniji, Senator Iyiola Omisore, Chief Abiola Ogundokun and Chief Francis Fadahunsi, among others. The ability to forget is one of the most important, if least acknowledged gifts of man. It is because we are able to forget things that we can go one with life, putting aside memories of lost ones as well as painful recollections of events that would otherwise make the very act of staying alive a struggle, and life, a running agony. But while the ability to forget has its benefits, not many people learn lessons from life’s experiences. Some, either because they are essentially dense or deliberately obtuse, choose to dare fate. How else can one explain the actions of the president’s wife, Mrs. Patience Jonathan who thought it fit to close Nigeria’s capital down for an entire day, in what basically amounts to a brazen continuation of the campaign for her husband’s re-election? For someone, who by her account, only just managed to come back from the dead after multiple surgeries and relapses, it seems that Mrs. Jonathan has not learned any lesson from that experience. Or it may be that the gift of forgetfulness has obfuscated her reasoning faculties. For anyone who had anything meaningful to do (like reporting to work to earn legitimate livelihoods) in Abuja, last Thursday was a commuter’s hell. The impunity with which major roads were closed off is a pointer to what Mrs. Jonathan would do if she were to remain in the villa beyond 2015. |

The Queen has paid a visit to her new great-grandson, the son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The half-hour visit to Kensington Palace came after the new family spent their first night at home. They left St Mary's Hospital in west London on Tuesday evening, where the duke told reporters they were yet to name the third in line to the throne. The Queen visited without her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, as he continues to recover from abdominal surgery. She made the short journey from Buckingham Palace in a dark green Bentley. The private meeting comes as the monarch prepares to leave for Balmoral in Scotland on Friday, where she has her traditional summer break. |
Prince William's wife Kate gave birth to a boy on Monday, the couple's first child and the third in line to the British throne, heralding celebrations in London and messages of goodwill from across the world. "We could not be happier," Prince William said in a brief statement, after he witnessed the birth of his son at 4:24 p.m. (1524 GMT), an event that sparked an international media frenzy and the illumination of London landmarks in blue. His office said Kate and the baby, weighing 8 lbs 6 oz (3.8 kg) and to be publicly named at a later date, were both doing well and would stay in hospital overnight. Prince William phoned his grandmother the queen to give her the news, and also contacted his father Prince Charles and brother Prince Harry, all of whom were said to be delighted. The addition to the family is third in line to the throne after Prince Charles and William. It might take some time for the name to emerge however. The announcement of William's name took more than a week, but bookmakers make George the favorite, followed by James. As the birth of the queen's third great-grandchild was announced, a loud cheer went up from the well-wishers and media gathered outside St. Mary's Hospital in west London, where William was also born to the late Princess Diana in 1982. "It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy," said Prince Charles, the heir to the throne. Within minutes, messages of congratulations began flooding in, while crowds gathered outside the queen's London residence Buckingham Palace where an official notice was placed on a gold-colored easel at the main gates.
