CareerA Guide To Thriving In The Post-covid-19 Workplace-azeez Moshood by moshoodable(op): 8:49pm On May 19, 2020
Even before COVID-19, many workers around the globe lacked key skills - including digital capabilities.
Upskilling in preparation for the changes to come post-COVID-19 should be a critical part of response and recovery.
There are four steps workers and businesses can take today to prepare for tomorrow: Accelerate the move to platform, transition to digital/virtual work, assess your skillset and expand it as needed, and plan for the future.
The pandemic has accelerated the need to ensure that people around the globe have the necessary technology skills and access to do their jobs. Even as China shows signs of recovery and the number of new daily infections worldwide appears to have stabilized, the US has seen an unprecedented number of people file for unemployment, and 57% of Americans surveyed recently report feeling worried about losing their jobs.

The current picture is bleak — and many parts of the world still haven’t felt the pandemic's full impact. However, recovery will come, so what should individuals be doing to make sure they can come back to the workforce stronger?
Shoring up skills
Many of the skills people need to be employable during and after COVID-19 are digital, which will enable, but not guarantee, resilience, creativity and the ability to collaborate with others. In areas where the pandemic is still an active threat, people need to be able to get work done while operating at a distance from co-workers. Managers and team leaders need the skills required to motivate and manage distributed teams. Job seekers may find themselves having to compete in a digital, fast-changing digital work with which they are unfamiliar.

Regional disparities will likely grow, with regions already left behind in the digital era experiencing increased hardship. Two such examples are rural areas, where less robust healthcare systems will exacerbate the pandemic’s impact, and some urban areas, especially in the developing world, where large populations were facing dire employment situations even before COVID-19.

If surviving and thriving in the wake of COVID-19 are our goals as a society, where should we start - and how should we chart our future course?

1. Accelerate the move to platform
One of COVID-19’s most immediate economic effects is to accelerate efforts that businesses, governments and individuals were already making to not only digitalize, but also transition to a platform model.

A platform business takes an approach similar to that of technology giants. The platforms these companies have created comprise ecosystems of technologies, services and products that bring consumers and producers together, and which can scale quickly and encourage third-party collaboration, thus extending their reach.

Our collective ability to operate successfully in a platform-based world will become much more important now because linear models - the most basic example of which is the factory assembly line - are not agile or resilient enough to withstand major disruptions like COVID-19. Such disruptions will become much more common in the decade ahead, so the importance of preparing our businesses, governments and institutions for this cannot be overstated.

Not all sectors are wholly suited to the platform model, but many industries and companies that haven’t started to evolve in that direction will be forced to do so much faster. As an individual, if you own a business you should explore opportunities of adopting a platform-business model or partnering with a platform and should prepare to compete with them. And all of us - whether owners or employees - need to study platforms to understand how they affect our lives, our work, and our future.

2. Transition to digital/virtual work
The requirement that we engage fully in the virtual realm right now is pushing people in many areas of business to learn not only digital skills, but also to improve auxiliary skills such as collaboration, creative problem-solving and openness to new ideas. Managers and team leaders, for example, are having to learn how to motivate and engage teams from afar.

At work, everything that can be done online will be, while activities we can’t do remotely will have to be reconfigured somehow.

Here we get a glimpse of how well-suited existing platform companies are to surviving COVID-19 - and thriving afterwards. In an ecosystem, the players rely on each other collectively, while the virtual aspect adds critical flexibility overall, so weakness in some areas won’t necessarily sink the entire enterprise.
3. Assess your skillset and expand it as needed
For those who gain time in the day because they now work remotely and no longer have to factor in a commute, there’s an opportunity to use the time to gain new skills. If you have been displaced or lost your job as a result of COVID-19, this offers a way to round out your skills and increase your employability.

Of course, many people now have to spend time caring for children who are not in school or other family members. Nonetheless, as people get used to changes in the rhythm of daily life in a world where work and personal lives are happening in a shared space, they can and should build time to assess their skills - digital and otherwise - into their new routines.

You won’t know what skills you need to bolster until you assess your current knowledge, so it makes sense to start with a diagnostic. PwC’s free Digital Fitness app, for example, allows anyone to assess their skills as well as boost knowledge in topics that help shape your behaviors and mindset.

At the same time, you’ve probably learned new skills to continue doing your job without leaving home. In the weeks of quarantine, you’ve likely had to bring different skills to your work: managing time to get work done and tend to others who are quarantined with you. Whatever reserves of resilience you have will likely have been tested - and you can draw on that as you move forward.

4. Plan for the future
Planning for the future in uncertain times is tricky at best, but we can extrapolate how things might shake out by doing some personal scenario planning, similar to the way businesses set strategy. The key is to begin thinking about where demand for work will exist and how best to prepare for those spaces, while realising that there are real uncertainties in the answers to those questions. The type of work that is robust across a lot of different futures is not a bad way to start.

And, in such times as these, it’s always good advice to bet on known trends, rather than try to anticipate what might be. For example, some parts of the world with demographically older population profiles - such as Europe, North America and Asia - may respond differently to these trends than populations in other parts of the world where there is a need for education and as they are about to enter the workforce. Finding ways to connect to these trends, and the implications for where there is likely to be work, makes sense.

PoliticsTinubu Is A Pillar, Leader In Yorubaland – Gov. Fayose by moshoodable(op): 7:33pm On Mar 28, 2016
Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state on Monday described former Lagos state Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as a pillar in Yorubaland and Nigeria as a whole. Fayose said this in a congratulatory message to mark Tiunbu’s 64th birthday. Tinubu was born on March 29, 1952. A statement issued by Mr Idowu Adelusi, the Chief Press Secretary to Fasoye, said that the APC national leader had over the years proven to be a great political figure in the country. “I heartily felicitate with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as he clocks 64 on March 29. “Whether one likes it or not, Asiwaju Tinubu has become a political pillar and leader, not only in Yorubaland but in Nigeria. “He is a great politician who takes well- calculated political steps. “I and the good people of Ekiti State join millions of Nigerians and Asiwaju Tinubu’s friends and supporters across the world to rejoice with him on this auspicious occasion. “Asiwaju Tinubu is a good case study when one talks about political resilience and doggedness and no wonder he now ranks among the leaders of this great country. “I pray that God gives him the grace to witness many more years in sound health in the land of the living,’’ Fayose was quoted as saying in the statement. thenationonlineng.net/tinubu-pillar-leader-yorubaland-fayose/

Jobs/VacanciesHow To Write A Post-interview Thank You Letter by moshoodable(op): 5:06pm On Mar 05, 2016
Sending a thank you letter is as important as
interview preparation. But they’re tough to
write, so people either tell themselves that
not sending one doesn’t matter, or they
procrastinate until it’s too late and almost
pointless anyway. But anyone who tells
themselves that foregoing a fundamental
rule of etiquette doesn’t matter, not only
taints themselves in the mind of the
interviewer, but misses two additional
opportunities to sell.

A thank you letter is an additional sales
piece. As I’ve said before, you’re selling a
product and the product is you. So beyond
the reason of etiquette, the letter sells you
as a polite person who recognizes that the
interviewer gave them something valuable:
time and consideration.
A fundamental rule of sales is to keep the
product in front of the buyer and reinforce
its benefits. So beyond the etiquette, the
letter gives you ample space to comment on
what you liked about the company, why your
skills are of benefit to them, and how much
you’re interested. If something wasn’t tied
up, or was left unsatisfactorily, you should
use the space to further address the issue.
When you miss the opportunity to reinforce
your skills and tie them to the job
requirements, you miss a chance to sell.
When you fail to address a concern or
answer a question and leave it to fester in
the mind of the interviewer, you’ve failed to
overcome an objection. And if a buyer has
an objection to the product, if it isn’t
addressed, the likelihood of the sale is slim.
The third opportunity missed by skipping the
thank you letter is the chance to keep your
name in front of the buyer. Read
newspapers? Watch TV? See the same ads
over and over and over again? It’s somewhat
the same principle – if you keep your name
in front of the hiring authority, they’re more
likely to remember you.
Thank you letters are one of the reasons it’s
important to take notes during an interview.
Not only does it show good attention to
detail, it saves you from having to scrunch
your face up trying to remember some of the
information you learned about the company
and position during the interview. Because if
you met with three separate people during
one visit to the company, that’s three thank
you letters….three different thank you
letters.
So let’s look at how to create one of these
so that it becomes a less odious task.

*First paragraph
Open with the obligatory thank you and
include how you enjoyed the meeting. Say
why. Maybe the people you met were
exceptional. Perhaps their company
philosophy was exactly what you had hoped
for. Or they need to overhaul a department
and you can’t wait to sink your teeth into it
because that’s what you’ve got a stellar
track record of doing. It doesn’t matter. Pick
something out, and put it down. But make it
real.

*Second paragraph
What took place during your interview? Pull
out a piece of information that pleased you,
say what it was, and tell them why. For
instance: I was particularly pleased to find
that X company/the opportunity/your
management style has/was/is/does
whatever. This is exciting because…… . You
can expand on whatever it is for a few
sentences by elaborating: how it relates to
something you’ve experienced and liked — or
didn’t like. Discuss a particular aspect of the
job you find appealing and reiterate why
you’d be successful at it or how long you’ve
been performing it or how similar it is to
something you’ve done in the past.

*Third paragraph
You can add a similar paragraph if the
second was fairly short. Or you can wind it
up if it was a bit lengthy. If there was
something that came up that needed
clarification or about which they were
dubious, address it and clear it up here.

*Fourth paragraph
Wind it up. Re-iterate your interest. Be
enthusiastic! Leave the job speak behind. If
you really want to be hired, let your interest
shine through. There’s nothing wrong with
coming right out and saying, “I’d love to
work with X company!”

Caution: Don’t start every sentence with “I”.
It may be the easiest way to write the letter
but it’s not only repetitive, it’s a turn off and
egotistical. This process is about you getting
a job, but it’s about what they get out of it if
they hire you.

If you really want the job, the letter will be
easy to write because it will contain genuine
impressions and sentiments. If you choose
to skip the letter, perhaps you don’t care if
you’re hired or not. But make that decision
yours and withdraw from the process
instead of letting the decision be made for
you.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: The Big Question by moshoodable: 7:58pm On Jan 23, 2016
The following are methods/metrics used in evaluating employees performance :
1. Behavioral checklist: Behavioral
checklist has a list of criteria that
an employee should workup to be
a diligent worker. The behaviors
differ according to the type of job
been assessed. This method is
considered favorable as the
evaluation is done on the basis of
individual employee performance
without comparisons.
2. 360 degree appraisal: 360 degree
appraisal involves feedback of the
manager, supervisor, team
members and any direct reports.
In this method of appraisal,
employees complete profile has to
be collected and assessed. In
addition to evaluating the
employees work performance and
technical skill set, an appraiser
collects an in-depth feedback of
the employee.
3. Management by objective: This is an
objective type of evaluation which
falls under modern approach of
performance appraisal. In MBO
method of performance appraisal,
manager and the employee agree
upon specific and obtainable goals
with a set deadline. With this
method, the appraiser can define
success and failure easily.
4. Psychological appraisals: This
appraisal method evaluates the
employees intellect, emotional
stability, analytical skills and
other psychological traits. This
method makes it easy for the
manager in placing the employees
in appropriate teams.

BusinessSIM Registration: FG To Sanction Telcoms Over Customers’ Harassment by moshoodable(op): 11:23am On Jan 21, 2016
The federal government has decried the
way and manner Nigerians, especially
women, are being treated in their bid to
comply with the Nigerian
Communications Commission (NCC)
directive on the registration of the
subscriber identification module (SIM) in
use, threatening to deal with erring
telecom companies henceforth.
A statement by the special assistant on
media to the minister of
communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu, Mr
Victor Oluwadamilare, said that this has
become necessary, following the barrage
of compliants by telecoms subscribers
across the country.
According to him, “The minister’s office
had been inundated with complaints from
Nigerians, particularly women in veil, over
the way they were being treated,
sometimes humiliated, by the workers of
telecommunications companies
nationwide.
“In some of the complaints, women in
pudah were required to remove their veils
in public despite requests by such
women that a place should be provided
for them away from public glare and for
only female officials to attend to them.
All entreaties by these women failed,
rather they were allegedly accused of
being Boko Haram agents and refused
registration after several altercations
ensued in some of the registration
centres.”
The minister, who frowned at the
development, urged the
telecommunications companies involved
to accord maximum respect to Nigerian,
particularly women, by respecting their
feminine nature and religious disposition,
moreso since the Nigerian Constitution
has guaranteed the right to freedom of
thought, conscience, and religion of all
citizens and that such right should never
be violated by executive or administrative
lawlessness, high handedness, and
insensitivity.
He noted that Nigerians deserve
unreserved apologies from the concerned
telecoms companies, saying that it is
inhuman and unacceptable to treat
Nigerians in such a cruel manner as it is
a universal maxim that the right of even
minorities are respected worldwide. He,
therefore, urged the telecommunications
companies to train and retrain their
workers on the right and more civilized
ways of treating their customers, adding
that sanction may be applied against any
erring company that refuse to comply
with the policy of the Nigerian
government under the change agenda of
President Muhammadu Buhari.

PoliticsWhat I Tell People Who Twist My First Name, “lai”, To “lie” – Lai Mohammed by moshoodable(op): 6:21pm On Jan 15, 2016
In this interview with PREMIUM TIMES’ Ben Ezeamalu, the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, spoke about his time as an opposition spokesperson, the war against insurgency, and the government’s proposed 2016 budget.
PREMIUM TIMES: For years, you served as the spokesperson for the opposition party. But now you’ve moved to become the spokesperson for the ruling party. What’s the major difference between the two positions?
Lai: Of course there are major differences. As the opposition’s spokesperson, you speak majorly for the opposition and you speak, also, within the information available to you. And you speak with the perspective of how you’ll do things better if you were there.
Now as the government spokesperson, you’ll be speaking not just for the government but the whole of the country. And you are expected to know everything about everything and whatever you say, the government could be held accountable to it. So it has its challenges. It could be quite exciting but it’s also full of challenges. In other words, you must at any given time be very abreast of the government’s policies, programmes, and you must be able to explain to the average Nigerian why things are being done in certain ways or why some things are not being done at all.
Yes, it’s a much more onerous responsibility in the sense that even the outside world will rely on you for information and news about your country. So it means then that you must know exactly how government works, what is happening, what are the reasons for what policies government is taking.
PT: But with you now being on the government side, when you look back to your days as the opposition spokesperson, do you feel there were things you unfairly criticized the then government for the way they handled them?
Lai: No, I don’t think so. Because I’ve gone back, we criticized based on information available to us. Even today I often revisit some of my positions. As at the time those issues were addressed, even with my position in government today, if the opposition today should raise the same issues, I wouldn’t fault them. Unless you can be specific and tell me that look ‘during Boko Haram you said this, today are you not saying a different thing?’ And you find out that there’s nothing I said all through my years on the position of Boko Haram that cannot be defended given circumstances on ground then.
PT: In your time as opposition spokesperson, you had people who admired the way you carried out your duties, as well as those who criticized them. Why is your party, the APC, finding it difficult to get your replacement?
Lai: Well, I think, on one hand, it’s flattering to hear that one is missed at his former position. Again, I believe that there are many Nigerians that can do better…
PT: (Cuts in) Like your deputy, Timi Frank?
Lai: …However, the fact of the matter is that positions in political parties are not usually on ‘merit.’ Or put this way, are not usually entirely on merit. There are other factors. They are not usually based on qualifications and, at times, it might be based on expediency or balancing. So it might be a bit difficult if you are now sourcing for your replacement. By the time you juggle the various political factors and all these things, you might not be able to find the right person.
Let me give you a practical example, and I want to look at it from this perspective. We have an 18 member National Working Committee, there are three from each geo-political zone. So if one resigns from one geo-political zone, because he has been a minister or a commissioner or he takes another political office, he must be replaced by somebody from that same geopolitical zone. You can see where the problem lies.
Yes, my deputy can act for me only until the next national convention of the party. But at that national convention of the party, my zone north-central, which is now left with only two members will expect that the next replacement must come from that zone. So that creates problems a bit.

Two, the occupier of the office also brings a few things to that office. And with all sense of humility, I think I’ve been in that office for quite a while. I was the pioneer national publicity secretary for the AC in 2006, in Benin, Edo State, I was elected. And for almost 10 years I held that office. So think it helped a lot. From the AC to the ACN and to APC. So whoever is going to succeed me may not necessarily have that kind of experience, but he could have some qualities that might even make him better.

PT: As spokesperson for then opposition party, a lot of people saw you as a Master of Propaganda. Some even said your first name ‘Lai’ was synonymous with ‘lie.’ How does it feel being seen in that light?

Lai: I think the democratization of the media space has brought a lot of changes, a lot of developments. Today you must have the capacity to absorb a lot of irritation. You must have the largeness of heart to tolerate a lot of insults. But the important thing is for you to remain focused. Most people react to you based on emotions. Because I’ve always challenged those who called me a propagandist to come out with just one of the thousands of press interventions I have made and say ‘this is propaganda,’ ‘this is not true.’ I’ve always challenged them.

PT: But the last time, you said the fuel scarcity would last for a “few days.” It ended up lasting for weeks…

Lai: No. Number one, I did not say that in my position as the spokesperson for the opposition, I said that as a minister. And what I said was that the payment would be made in a few days time and that will improve the situation. And the payment was actually made a few days after. And I’ve had occasions to explain to the world the complex issues surrounding fuel scarcity. The immediate cause was the fact that we owed marketers lot of arrears and we went to National Assembly and we asked for supplementary budget of N674 billion. Out of it, N532 billion was dedicated to payment of arrears. Nobody can deny these facts, they are there. You see, people react to you based on emotion. And the truth of the matter is that these arrears date back to August 2014. These facts are there but you see people can’t handle hard facts.
Two, I’ve explained that in addition to the backlog of payments which actually led to marketers to the fact that marketers refused to bring in products because banks also refused to extend their credit facility. We’ve always had challenges with the distribution network. We have 5,120 kilometres of pipeline, 24 depots, 21 pump stations, with this network we ought to not to have any problem with administration. But unfortunately the pipeline vandalization has rendered our pipeline networks ineffective. Before now if you are in Ilorin, Ibadan, Mosimi, Satellite, or Ore, you did not need to bring your tankers to Lagos to get products. But because these pipelines have been so vandalized, trucks from Ilorin, from Ibadan, from Mosimi, from Satellite are all now queueing up at the Atlas Cove jetty. It is only about a week or so ago we were able to secure the pipeline, that is the Atlas Cove, that you can see a lot of improvement.

Again, another factor why the queue has been lingering is that the tackney is not good for this kind of scarcity. Because as you approach the winter, most refineries in the world, they would have switched over to LP not PMS – they are approaching winter so they are now refining more of the heavy oil for the heaters and for the homes and they are refining less for PMS for automobiles.
Again, we need to address the issue of enforcement and implementation by the regulatory authorities like PPPRA and DPR.

So to go back, I did not say fuel queues will disappear in days. I said we’ll resolve the matter in a few days time. And we did. Because the budget was passed and we were able to pay all the arrears. But then it’s like resetting your television, it takes a while because it’s a chain of supply and distribution.

Nigerian professional footballer, Obafemi
Akinwunmi Martins is set to launch his fashion
line to “serve millions of fans who are enthralled
by the image of the master dribbler and goal
scoring flip” with quality apparel.
Martins, who was recently recalled to the senior
national team, the Super Eagles by Sunday
Oliseh, after almost two years, scoring 15 goals
in the Major League Soccer (MLS) for his
American club, Seattle Sounders, has already
unveiled some of the works via his Instagram
account, website and stores in the United States
of America two months ago.
He promised Lagosians and Nigerians that the
fashion gear will soon be officially unveiled in the
country.
The collection features T-shirts, sweatshirts, hud
and sweater.
Martins, popularly called ‘Weapon of Mass
Destruction’ in Nigeria is also the face of his
brand, with the back-flip goal celebration image
This is the first time we will have a Nigerian
footballer going into fashion in a civilised and
professional manner. I love clothes. That is the
reason I have decided to branch into creating a
clothing line for at least my fans to have the
opportunity to see my other side.
“It’s not about football alone. A lot is still coming
from me, i am also going to set up my own
foundation soon where I am going to give back
to the society in Nigeria. I have one already, but
I still want to do that in all the states in Nigeria
this time around, it will not be a Lagos thing
alone. The first is this Obagear project and I’m
sure my fans will love it. Obagear is fast selling
in America, hopefully we will unveil it in Lagos
very soon,” said Martins.
The Obagear is yet to hit the Nigerian big
fashion market, but is currently available at a
number of boutiques and stores in the United
States.

PoliticsPresident Buhari Extols Rev. Father Mbaka’s Courage. by moshoodable(op): 4:51pm On Dec 18, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari (C), Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo(l) and Adoration Ministry Priest, Rev Father Ejike Mbaka during an audience with President Buhari at the State House, DEC. 18, 2015.
President Muhammadu Buhari has said that one of the best exhortations to the nation he has heard from the pulpit was the one made early this year by Father Ejike Mbaka of the Adoration Ministries, Enugu.
Receiving Father Mbaka who was on a courtesy call at State House, Abuja on Friday, President Buhari expressed his appreciation of the Catholic priest’s exemplary courage.
“Thank you very much for what you have done and said. It brought you out to the whole country as a man of courage. It was honest and well delivered. It has gone into the records as one of the best concerns expressed from the pulpit, not because it favoured me and my party, the All
Progressives Congress, but because it was good for the country,” the President told Father Mbaka.
President Buhari reaffirmed his conviction that change will come to the country, “with a lot of hard work, despite the security and economic problems.”
He appealed for the continued understanding and patience of Nigerians.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who was present at the President’s audience with Father Mbaka, described the priest as a man “who stood for truth and propriety, and declared corruption unacceptable.”
He added that the Buhari administration “is committed to truth and justice, and won’t encourage corruption in any way.”
Fr. Mbaka, who in the run up to the 2015 presidential election, told his teeming followers that erstwhile President Goodluck Jonathan would not be re-elected because of pervading corruption and insecurity in the land, said he was happy with the mission and methodology of the Buhari administration.
He also wished the President a happy 73rd birthday.

PoliticsSouth Africa, Most Corrupt Country In Africa – Transparency International by moshoodable(op): 3:43pm On Dec 02, 2015
Transparency International (TI) has stated that corruption was undermining development in sub-Saharan Africa saying that South Africa remains most corrupt country In Africa.

The TI also listed, Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ghana as witnessing the highest levels of corruption.

It said in a report published in Johannesburg that investigation has revealed that an estimated 75 million people gave bribes last year.

The report said that Word Bank data showed that Sub-Saharan Africa has a total population of 973 million, and more than 22 per cent of Africans who came into contact with public service in the past 12 months paid bribe.

The organization’s chairman, Jose Ugaz, in a statement said that African nations must do a better job of policing themselves.

“Corruption creates and increases poverty and exclusion,” he said.

“While corrupt individuals with political power enjoy a lavish life, millions of Africans are deprived of their basic needs like food, health, education, housing, access to clean water and sanitation,” he said.

Ugaz called on governments and judges to stop corruption and eradicate impunity for the corrupt, adding that people need to be able to stand up against governments’ misconduct without fear of retaliation.

The organization said that police were often paid to “ignore any crime, however horrific and devastating.”

It gave the example of nine-year-old girl in Zimbabwe who was raped, but the rapist who infected her with HIV was released after paying a bribe.

“While some people pay bribes to escape punishment for crimes, others are “forced to pay to get access to the basic services that they desperately need,” he added.

“That was particularly the case in South Africa, where 83 per cent reported an increase in graft,” it said.
