Grateful to Be Alive – A Cautionary Story

Honestly, I don’t even know where to start. All I can say is thank God I’m alive and back home. What I went through yesterday in Port Harcourt is still hard for me to believe.

Last week, a client reached out, saying he had a job for me. We discussed the project, came to an agreement that worked for him, and he asked me to come on Saturday — which happened to be election day. I told him I’d need part of my workmanship fee upfront so I could come with my boys, check out the site, and prepare properly. He refused, saying he couldn’t send money since we hadn’t worked together before. He promised to refund me if I found a way to get there.

Desperate to secure the job, I took a loan — with my dad standing as guarantor — and traveled to Port Harcourt by night bus on Sunday, hoping to get there early Monday morning. Unfortunately, the journey was delayed and I arrived late at night. I tried calling the client, but his phone was off, so I checked into a cheap hotel.

By 5 a.m., he finally called and said he’d be busy until 10 a.m. Later, he sent someone he claimed was his cousin to pick me up. As we were heading to the site, we were suddenly stopped by two men who started harassing us. Before I could understand what was happening, more men appeared. I realized too late that something was wrong.

I tried to fight my way out, but they overpowered me and beat me up. When I looked around, the supposed "cousin" was gone. That’s when it hit me: it was all a setup.

They took my phone and demanded my father's number. I explained that my family is just managing and I even had to borrow money to make the trip. They contacted my brother and demanded ₦5 million. I laughed — not because it was funny, but because it was absurd. Where would we even get such an amount?

Eventually, they extorted ₦200,000 from my brother and dumped me in the bush with my face covered and nothing but my shorts. Before leaving, they gave me ₦1,000.

Please, let this be a warning to those of us who risk traveling for jobs without knowing the full picture. If a client can’t even send you transport fare, think twice. Don’t put yourself in debt or danger. Right now, my dad and I are in debt of ₦300,000 — not including interest.

Despite everything, I’m still available for work. I’m still your humble guy — CM Interiors. This experience won’t stop me, but I had to share it. Stay safe out there.

. Sorry bro. I have received countless calls from the same Port Harcourt for POP and stamping, asking me to fund my transport, which I declined. I am okay with my Lagos and Ibadan because I understand the terrain.

Ajia is mo more remote area, with newly constructed road that leads to airport, on-going over head bridge, Air force and circular road. Ajia is now expensive

The Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde has said the ongoing 76.67 km Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso road construction will be named after former Oyo state governor, late Adebayo Alao-Akala.
Makinde made the statement on Saturday in Ibadan, during his 10th Omituntun Ramadan Lecture and Anniversary Awards.

Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso road project which was flagged off on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, was awarded to two contractors: Kopek Construction Ltd, handling the 38.1 km Iseyin End which covers Iseyin-Apewo Village with a 65m span bridge, and Craneburg Construction Ltd handling the 38.57 km Ogbomoso End which covers Apewo Village–Ogbomoso with a 45m bridge and underpass.

The Road provides vital inter-zone connectivity between the Ogbomoso and Oke Ogun Zones of Oyo State as well as easy access between the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology
Campus in Ogbomoso and the Iseyin Campus. The Oyo State Government is also constructing other major roads that connect zones in Oyo State.


” I said the 76.67 km Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso Road being constructed by our administration will be commissioned in May this year and will be named the Adebayo Alao-Akala Memorial Highway. euphoria and aroma welcoming people to Ogbomosho Recreation Club is second to none. It is not just like a party. For one week, it was a non-stop carnival. Students, old and young people flooded the venue of the exercise, not just to see the cooking wonder but also taste the different types of food coming from the kitchen.
Aside from the tennis court where the temporary kitchen is mounted, on the training pitch of the Ogbomosho Recreation Club were tents and stages for musicians where several musicians performed everyday till daybreak.

The main attraction for the weeklong event was the competition for the Guinness World Record in marathon cooking. Tope Adebayo was thus the one for whom all the others, musicians and tennis players entertained the crowd.
Tope Adebayo, popularly known as Tope Maggie, who has been in cooking exercise since Last week Thursday, November 9 has been the cynosure of all eyes. He is the reason those who hardly stop over at the Recreation Club prior to his setting shop there on Thursday November 9 came to lay wait for a record that the world was waiting for. For the teeming crowd of fans Tope Maggie was like a deity in the cubicle where he churned out a series of delicacies for one week.

Alabi Tunji Michael, alias ATM, General manager of the exercise, described the exercise as successful. He said on a daily basis, they cook two to three bags of rice, aside semolina, Amala, spaghetti, and others. That must have cost a lot. Perhaps, that cost cannot be determined immediately. ATM said, “We spent a very huge amount of money. (If you) look at the kitchen constructed alone, we spent millions of Naira. Running generating set alone is huge, because we are live and it mustn’t break.”
Tope Adebayo, according to him, started cooking at the age of 6 years, then while helping his mother, a restaurateur who managed Mama Maggie Restaurant. He, however, started his catering career 22 years ago. When asked if he is not tired, Tope said cooking has been part of him that he can do it for a whole month.

Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde has agreed to pay workers in the State the sum of twenty-five thousand naira (N25,000) as wage award.

Equally, the Governor agreed to pay pensioners the sum of fifteen-thousand naira (N15,000).

Makinde made the promise to the workers during a solidarity rally held at the State Secretariat, Governor’s Office, Ibadan on Monday.

Recall that the Governor had about four weeks ago inaugurated an 11-member ad-hoc inter-ministerial committee on the harmonisation of the demands of labour unions in the state.

The governor, who performed the inauguration at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, charged the members of the committee to be open-minded and to come up with homegrown solutions on issues bordering on workers’ welfare in the state.

Makinde also tasked the committee, headed by the secretary to the state government (SSG), Prof Olanike Adeyemo, to come up with a report on the modalities for the implementation of workers’ demands.

While addressing the workers and retirees, Makinde noted that the payment would start from October and will be sustained for the next six months.
