The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) and the National Parents-Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) have said private schools are set to participate in the 2020 senior school certificate examination (SSCE) being conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

It appealed to the federal government to reconsider its position on the matter.

Recall that the government had last week said no Nigerian school would participate in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) earlier scheduled to hold from August 5 to September 5.

The Education Minister, Adamu Adamu, said the atmosphere is not conducive for the May/June diet of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination to hold in the country.

But the stakeholders described the latest position of the government as inconsistent and confusing.

The minister had on Wednesday announced the reversal of the government’s earlier position on schools’ resumption, saying the atmosphere is yet unsafe for teaching and learning in the country.

Mr Adamu’s position was based on the rising cases of coronavirus diseases in the country, saying children would find it difficult to observe the required protocols including social distancing, to keep themselves safe if allowed to return to schools.

Speaking about NAPPS position, the president, Yomi Otubela, in a telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES, said private schools across the country are set to participate in the examination, noting that the required protocols as recommended by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in the management of the coronavirus disease would be observed.

He said a formal appeal will be made to the minister on Tuesday, saying rather than blanket non-participation of Nigerian candidates in the examination, the government should set appropriate rules to guide the conduct of the examination and ensure strict compliance.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sent birthday wishes to Super Eagles and Nantes forward Moses Simon who clocked 25 years on Sunday.

The country’s football governing body sent the wishes on their verified Twitter handle.

“Happy birthday @NGSuperEagles winger, @Simon27Moses,” the NFF wrote.

Born in Jos, Simon is a product of the famed GBS Academy, the same football academy in Nigeria that produced Super Eagles teammate Ahmed Musa.

Simon was linked with Kaduna United, as many professional clubs around the world were also eager to sign him.

On 10 May 2013, it was announced that Simon had signed a pre-contractual agreement with Dutch giants Ajax to join them in pre-season training, having previously been linked with Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, was left fuming after his side lost 3-0 against Sheffield United on Saturday night.

Lampard blamed the defeat on lack of chances created and problems made by his players.

Two goals from David McGoldrick and a strike from Oli McBurnie ensured Sheffield defeated Chelsea at Bramall Lane.

European governing body UEFA has decided the venue of the reverse fixture of the Champions League after the tournament was halted by the outbreak of coronavirus.

A special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation identified as Ali Sadiq has revealed how Olalekan Jacob Ponle, popularly known as Woodberry was arrested alongside his partner Hushpuppi.

Premium Times reported that Woodberry was tracked through his details accessed from his WhatsApp, iPhone, and Bitcoin transactions. It was said that the fraudster used a fake name called Mark Kain to dupe several United States-based companies through Business Email Compromise (BEC) schemes.

Woodberry then directed his victims in the US to open bank accounts in the names of the companies he scammed. After opening the account, he would then tell his victims to send money to a bitcoin wallet that he owned and operated.

However, a name remained constant in the mouth of victims and it was the fake name that Woodberry used for his fraudulent activities.

Findings showed that the scammer used the same mobile number to reach his victims, his WhatsApp chats with victims also revealed how he transacted with his victims and the bitcoin account showed that he asked different victims to send money to the same bitcoin account number on nine different occasions.

On the morning of June 10, news broke that big boy Hushpuppi and Woodberry were arrested by the Dubai police. Following their arrests, new revelations have been made about their fraudulent activities.


Gal Pissetzky of Pissetzky and Berliner argued that the Instagram star is not guilty of the fraud charge brought against him. He said that Hushpuppi has a legal business that he runs which is the source of his income.

Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, says the justice system of the state will no longer grant bail to rapists.

El-Rufai disclosed this when a group of women, advocating for justice for rape victims, staged a peaceful rally at the government house in Kaduna, on Monday.

The governor, who noted that the state already has strong legislation against rape, added that his government is already considering an amendment to the law to include the castration of persons convicted of the crime.

“I am happy that our chief judge has decided to take that very seriously,” el-Rufai said.

“We are also working on that and we know that this epidemic of rape and issues related to rape will be a thing of the past.

“It is 21 years for rape of an adult and life imprisonment for the rape (defilement) of a child.

“In addition to life imprisonment or 21 years’ imprisonment, anyone convicted of rape will have his organ surgically removed so that even after he finishes his term, he will not be able to rape anyone again.

“So long as the tool exists, there is the likelihood that he may go back to do it again.

“Most of the perpetrators are young people, so even after 21 years, they can come back and continue.”

He added that a member of the state house of assembly had already drafted a bill proposing the castration, and promised that the government would look into it.

“This measure is necessary as most cases of rape fail to get convicted because the witnesses disappear or their parents and the communities cover up due to the stigma surrounding rape,” he said.

“We have made it clear that we will protect the faces and identities of the victims and survivors of rape.

“So, there is no problem testifying in court. You will testify behind the screen, so nobody will know who you are or your face.”

The governor called on parents to instill morals in their children and give women the rights and the respect they deserve, NAN reported.

Saratu Abdulaziz, spokesperson of the group, said they were at the government house to seek the governor’s support on ending the incessant cases of rape in the state.

Abdulaziz expressed sadness over the rise in rape cases, saying it posed a serious danger to society.

“People cover up rape cases, which is not good for us. We are, therefore, calling on all victims to always voice out so that they can get the justice they deserve,” she said.

They, however, called for stiffer penalties against persons found guilty of the crime.

Adidas and PUMA are household names, but you probably don’t know the story of how these successful companies came to be.

It’s a story of brothers who started out as business partners and ended up as bitter enemies and rivals. If you’ve ever tried to work with family, maybe you understand how this could happen, but these brothers took it to a whole ‘nother level. Today we’re going to tell the story of the enemy brothers who founded Adidas and PUMA. There’s definitely something to learn from the success of each of these brothers, so let’s start at the beginning.

Who are the Dassler Brothers?

Adolf and Rudolph Dassler were brothers who were born in the small town of Herzogenaurach (Hers-ah-gin-or-ick), Germany, about 12 miles outside Nuremberg. Rudolf, who was born in 1898, was two years older than his brother. The brothers went by the nicknames Rudi and Adi. Their family came from a long line of weavers, but once the textile industry was overtaken by industrialization, Rudi and Adi’s father Christoph learned the art of shoemaking.

In 1913, Adi began an apprenticeship as a baker, but he was much more interested in athletics. After completing his apprenticeship, he decided against being a baker and instead began to learn about shoemaking from his father. He began thinking about how different types of shoes could potentially affect how athletes perform in different sports. After serving in the army for over a year at the end of World War I, Adi decided to start his own shoemaking business that focused on innovative athletic footwear.

Beginnings Adi started the business in his mother’s laundry room, but he had many challenges in the beginning. Germany was devasted after the war, and there were very few sources of materials or machines. But Adi was creative and resourceful. He scavenged debris left over from the war to find materials he could use such as army helmets with leather that could be used for soles and parachutes that could provide silk for slippers.

He also created a leather milling machine that could be powered by a stationary bicycle instead of electricity. Adi had a strong vision for a unique shoe company that would focus on specialized shoes for various sports. He was constantly experimenting with innovative designs and materials like shark skin and kangaroo leather to see what would be most effective for different sports.

Rudi, on the other hand, had planned on becoming a police officer after the war but saw promise in his brother’s shoe business and eventually decided to join him on July 1, 1923. They officially opened the Dassler Brothers Sports Shoe Factory one year later and began making football boots and track shoes with hand-forged spikes.

By 1926, they had moved the company out of the family home and were producing 100 shoes a day with a staff of 25 people. Both brothers joined the Nazi party in May 1933, and Adi saw the opportunity to expand production by supplying shoes to sports clubs in the Hitler Youth movement. In 1934, 34-year-old Adi married 16-year-old Käthe Kate-uh Martz, which would lead to problems later on, but more about that in a minute. The brothers’ would experience their big break two years later.

1936 Olympics Joseph Waitzer, the coach of the German Olympic track and field team, became an early fan of their specialized shoes. He became a vital consultant for the brothers, and this relationship gave them unique access to the athletes at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Athletes had worn the brothers’ shoes in the 1928 and 1932 Olympics, but the Berlin Olympics gave them the opportunity to showcase their products in their home country.

However, their greatest exposure came from American Jesse Owens, who accepted a pair of shoes from Adi and went on to win four gold medals while wearing the shoes. This led to a major spike in business internationally, and by 1938 their company was producing 1,000 pairs of shoes a day with specific designs for 11 different types of sports. But then World War 2 started and everything changed.

From Partners to Enemies While Rudolf was conscripted into the army, Adi was permitted to remain as the head of the factory. Rudi resented this and thought that his younger brother was trying to take over control of the company, which he very well may have been. Rudi even threatened to have the factory shut down just so that his brother would also have to go to war.

Although Adi continued to make shoes, the majority of the production was geared toward weapons and supplies for the war effort. Near the end of the war, Rudi defected from the army but was caught and arrested. He was in prison for about a month before the Allied liberation in May 1945.

She can’t get sick or be late to the set, and her hair and makeup needs are minimal: Her name is Erica, and Hollywood is hoping that a sophisticated robot can be its next big star. The synthetic actor has been cast in “b,” a $70 million science-fiction movie which producer Sam Khoze describes as “a James Bond meets Mission Impossible story with heart.”

Scribe Tarek Zohdy (“1st Born”), says, the story is about scientists who create an AI robot named Erica who quickly realize the danger of this top-secret program that is trying to perfect a human through a non-human form.

Variety caught up with the filmmakers Zohdy and Khoze to discuss “b” the $70 million film that plans to finish shooting next year, after a director and human star have been brought on.

Who is Erica and how did she come to be in the film?

Tarek Zohdy: The producers, Sam Khoze and Anoush Sadegh, in association with professors Hiroshi Ishiguro and Kohei Ogawa of the University of Osaka and Telecommunication Research Institute, took on the task of training Erica to act.

We wanted to create a story, and we wanted to do it in a revolutionary way. A robot doesn’t have life experiences so they created this persona about those experiences, and we taught her how to act.

We found her to be the most capable of performing as an actor. Erica has the ability for natural interaction with people by integrating various technologies such as voice recognition, human tracking, and natural motion generation. She is almost human. Visually, her human-like appearance made her the best-known candidate to play this character in the movie.

We are artists and, we are artists of color who are able to do something with our art. We want to have a very diverse cast and as a diverse filmmaking group, I think that is essential.

How long did it take you to write the script and what can you tell us about the story?

Sam Khoze: We went through several rewrites. VFX Supervisor Eric Pham ( “Sin City”) joined us later to help develop the final version of the story . It’s a really beautiful story because, at its heart, Erica’s father who spent his life developing her wants her to serve humanity and change the way people look at AI and robots.

How long did it take to train Erica and get the performance you needed?

Khoze: It took about two years. She’s 23-years old. She has experience. She goes to the museums once a month to meet people, so she’s a fun robot.

What stage is “B” at right now and how do you see having a character like Erica being an opportunity for the film industry?

Khoze: When we started this project in 2018, we had a director who wasn’t comfortable with having VFX in the movie.

We went off and started researching and we found Erica’s creator. We started training her and she’s been performing flawlessly. She’s probably the closest AI ever made to be an artist. We wanted to experiment to see if she would learn acting. And we basically started to training her and she performs flawlessly and very well.

We don’t want to replace actors with AI, but it’s an interesting opportunity for the entertainment industry to look at AI and robots in Hollywood.

By creating her, we’ve learned she’s fully capable of communicating with people and interacting.

What does that mean? We’ve created this algorithm to digitally preserve people. So, if an actor doesn’t want to risk their life, this allows you to create a digital version of that human being, and she has her own personality without anyone needs to program her. So now we’re using this algorithm to bring actors to set using this AI technology.

A new strain of flu that has the potential to become a pandemic has been identified in China by scientists.

It emerged recently and is carried by pigs, but can infect humans, they say.

The researchers are concerned that it could mutate further so that it can spread easily from person to person, and trigger a global outbreak.

While it is not an immediate problem, they say, it has "all the hallmarks" of being highly adapted to infect humans and needs close monitoring.

As it's new, people could have little or no immunity to the virus.

The scientists write in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that measures to control the virus in pigs, and the close monitoring of swine industry workers, should be swiftly implemented.


Pandemic threat A bad new strain of influenza is among the top disease threats that experts are watching for, even as the world attempts to bring to an end the current coronavirus pandemic.

The last pandemic flu the world encountered - the swine flu outbreak of 2009 - was less deadly than initially feared, largely because many older people had some immunity to it, probably because of its similarity to other flu viruses that had circulated years before.

That virus, called A/H1N1pdm09, is now covered by the annual flu vaccine to make sure people are protected.

The new flu strain that has been identified in China is similar to 2009 swine flu, but with some new changes.



So far, it hasn't posed a big threat, but Prof Kin-Chow Chang and colleagues who have been studying it, say it is one to keep an eye on.

How worried should we be? The virus, which the researchers call G4 EA H1N1, can grow and multiply in the cells that line the human airways.

They found evidence of recent infection in people who worked in abattoirs and the swine industry in China when they looked at data from 2011 to 2018.

Current flu vaccines do not appear to protect against it, although they could be adapted to do so if needed.

Prof Kin-Chow Chang, who works at Nottingham University in the UK, told the BBC: "Right now we are distracted with coronavirus and rightly so. But we must not lose sight of potentially dangerous new viruses."

While this new virus is not an immediate problem, he says: "We should not ignore it."

In theory, a flu pandemic could occur at any time, but they are still rare events. Pandemics happen if a new strain emerges that can easily spread from person to person.

Although flu viruses are constantly changing - which is why the flu vaccine also needs to change regularly to keep up - they do not usually go pandemic.

Prof James Wood, head of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge, said the work "comes as a salutary reminder" that we are constantly at risk of new emergence of pathogens, and that farmed animals, with which humans have greater contact than with wildlife, may act as the source for important pandemic viruses.

AFRICA Magic Viewers Choice Award-winning actor, Osita Iheme has called on the Federal Government to establish a ministry of entertainment for the creative industry.

“We need a ministry of entertainment where we can say if you have any problem go there and report, where the entertainment industry will be having budget every year just like education, security, agriculture,” Iheme said.

The diminutive actor advised that the ministry should function like other ministries in the Nigerian government with budgets rather than inaccessible loans.

“We need a budget for entertainment, we need a budget for the creative industry whereby the creative industry will be able to have their own budget every year that they can use to do whatever they want to do.”

The Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) made this known in a recent interview where he spoke on matters concerning the entertainment industry and way forward.

“We need them (Federal Government) to come and create that infrastructure for us because they keep bringing money but at the end of the day, some people in the industry can’t even access the money.

Bank will say bring this and that collateral, at the end of the day the main players of the industry can’t even access the money which they provide for the industry,” the comic actor began.

Continuing, Iheme said, “Also a lot of people who are not even in the industry will just come up and register an entertainment business, go and pick the money or they have one way or the other to access this money or the structures.

People in the entertainment are suffering putting their money, a lot of people don’t have these structures to access this big loans, when you create these loans you have to create a platform where people can be able to access it, understanding the sector which you are providing the money for, understanding the people in that business, you don’t just keep the loan as normal loan’s whereby you would be requiring for some collateral you know that these people cannot provide and you want them to access the loan.

“By then the commercial banks will tell you to bring this and that, and you know this is a new business and people do not have that kind of structure you are requesting of them to do, they are still building up because this is what they started on their own.

So sometimes if they are providing all this money they should make sure the players are able to access it or even they can forget the money and use the money to build infrastructures inside the business so that technically we will be sound, financially we will be okay.”

Iheme insists that the Federal Government should give more unfettered attention to the creative industry. “Let them reduce referring creatives sectors to bank loans, many sectors who are not doing well like the creative sectors have their own ministry, there is a need for us to have our own ministry because we create a lot of jobs, we contribute and are the biggest employer of labour in the country.

A lot of people come out of school and don’t have anything to do, they fall into creative sector and they get employed, empowered, I am a living example of that and government need to look into it because there is a lot of money in it but because of the oil issue, they think that this industry is not making anything, no that’s wrong” said Osita.

On how the entertainment industry has evolved over the last decade, he said: “I can say we are doing great even though we need some financial and technical support, even though we have been clamoring for the government to come in; we are not calling the government to come and bring in money, we are calling the government to come in and help us in building some infrastructures, help us in developing studios because we started this thing by ourselves, we hustled, made money and started shooting movies”.

He, however, noted that though cinemas are springing up in the country but a majority of them are private sector-driven, making it difficult for movie directors and producers to interact because the cinema owners want to make their money adding that it will be more accessible if the government-owned some of such avenues.
