The Presidency on Sunday challenged former President Olusegun Obasanjo to provide evidence backing his claims that President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration is training secret snipers towards 2015 general election.

An 18-page letter written by Obasanjo was released to the media on Wednesday claiming the existence of the snipers towards eliminating perceived opponents as he leveled other grave allegations against Jonathan.

In a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the Presidency asked the former President to prove his claims or forever remain silent.

The statement reads: “President Jonathan is running a people’s government. He does not need any snipers. His legitimacy comes from the people. Those who are alleging the existence of snipers should step forward and provide the evidence or shut up forever and go down in history as spineless cowards, driven by sheer greed and indecency.”

The Presidency also described the call by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Jonathan’s impeachment as reckless and irresponsible.

“We have noted with utter disdain, the reckless and irresponsible call by the APC on Sunday for the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against President Goodluck Jonathan.”

“Ordinarily, we would not have dignified Alhaji Lai Mohammed’s latest vituperation in the service of his paymasters with a response, but we thought it necessary to warn that the Federal Government will not standby idly and let the nation be plunged into unnecessary crises and political instability because of the desperation and apparent readiness of the APC spokesman and his gang of power-seeking desperadoes to sacrifice the well-being of the country on the altar of their selfish personal ambitions.”

“The Presidency totally condemns the decision by Alhaji Mohammed and his party to move further beyond the bounds of honourable and acceptable political conduct with the senseless call for the impeachment of a President who continues to sincerely devote himself to the discharge of the sacred mandate freely given to him by Nigerians.”

“The APC, which remains a minority party with doubtful credentials in the National Assembly, knows fully well that its attempt to hector and blackmail a Parliament dominated by loyal members of the President’s party, the PDP, into an impeachment process, will come to nothing.”

Dr Tim Anosike, the President of Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, on Friday warned that the Niger Bridge might collapse sooner than envisaged by its designers and engineers.

He made the observation when he spoke in Onitsha, Anambra.

Anosike said that the bridge was being overburdened by the daily traffic gridlocks and had to carry tens of trucks with goods of thousands tonnage each day.



He said that the commencement of the second Niger Bridge was overdue considering the increase in vehicular movement on the bridge in the past five years.

“This chamber will never cease crying to the Federal Government until the construction of the second Niger Bridge is achieved.

“Without this project, the entire life and economic activities of the people in this part of our country are hanging on the balance as the existing bridge can collapse sooner than envisaged.

“We have thought that the critical nature of the project is not something to toy with.

“But very sadly, it has become a strategic weapon for political campaign in the hands of our politicians since time immemorial,’’ he said.

The Federal Government had awarded the construction of the bridge to Julius Berger, but work is yet to start.

Such A sad and wicked story of a beautiful girl who infected 120 male students before her death. How it happened; When she was in form 3, she met a student- teacher from Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya who lured her into a relationship.

The teacher was on a teaching practice at her school but he had not yet graduated from university. Their relationship flourished and they went on to have unprotected s*x.Later, the teacher returned to the university and she resorted to visiting him there. They continued making love in the university. Unknown to her, the student teacher was HIV and he infected her. When she graduated from high school, she joined the university and it is on this time that she discovered that she was HIV .

She enquired about the whereabouts of her former boyfriend and that the time she learnt from his sister that he had died of HIV. She was in pain that she has lost her future. It is at this time that she decided to go on a HIV spreading spree at Moi University claiming that it is there where she got it and in the same place, she will leave it!

In the process, she managed to spread the virus to about 120 male students in her first semester. She slept with 124 students but only 4 used a c0nd0m. She later released a list of the infected student’s names and their admission numbers.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will suspend the five months strike next week after the union signed a Memorandum of Understanding to that effect with Federal Government on Wednesday
ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, who signed the agreement on behalf of the union, confirmed to journalists that the strike would be called off next week following agreement signed by both parties.
Fagge said the MoU contained all the demands presented by the union.

The Police in Imo State, recently,rounded up the brain behind the death of a 12-year-old girl, Ifunanya Favour Iberi who was declared wanted two months ago by arresting a 34-year-old man identified as Samuel Chukwunyere. Police alleged that the suspect was responsible for raping the teenager to death and dumping her lifeless body in a deep well.

The missing little Ifunanya was last seen by members of her family on Sunday, October 13, 2013, when she could not return to their house after her day’s routine activities. Apparently worried by the scaring development, her parents immediately alerted the Imo State Police Command. Their passionate appeal to the Commissioner of Police, Katsina was very simple. “You must please, assist us find our missing daughter.”

Search for suspects

Seeing the depth of grief boldly written on the faces of Ifunanya’s parents, the Imo State police boss assured them of his determination to get to the root of the matter.

Katsina mobilized his men and went after the fleeing criminal. Not long after, a 34-year old artisan from Amaenyi, Nkwerre, Chukwunyere, who lives at Umulolo village, where the missing girl hailed from, was apprehended. This man quickly fled the community when he noticed that he was being linked with the sudden disappearance of little Ifunanya. The suspect was rounded up few days ago by the police when he quietly returned to the village.

Confession of suspect

In an interview with Crime Alert, the suspect confessed that he actually lured the innocent victim to his house and raped her to death. He also disclosed that he lured the girl to his place because he told her that he bought her a phone, adding as soon as they got to his house and on noticing that the place was lonely, he quickly grabbed the young girl.

His words: “I forced her. I tried to use her through her private part but my own thing could not enter. I now turned her and she started shouting. I now held her well, well. I don’t want anybody to hear her voice. I now started using her through her anus. In the process of using her through the anus, she now shouted and I now held her back again, using her. In the process of using her, she now gave up.”

The suspect also explained how he dumped the remains of his young victim inside a deep pit near his residence to avoid being traced by anybody. “I now asked myself how will I manage to hide the corpse of this girl. I now rock my brain and rock my brain and the shovel that I have there cannot dig the ground. This ground sef na stone ground. I cannot dig it alone. I now searched around my place here and I saw that pit there (pointing to the location of the pit) and I now say let me come and put her inside that pit, so that the place will be enough to hide it. Nobody will know. I now rolled her with some cloths. After12 to one o’clockin the midnight, I now brought her to this place and now throw her inside the pit.”

He also confessed that this was not his first rape case, especially as Crime Alert gathered that several girls in the area had previously fallen victim to his nefarious act.

The State Police boss later took Crime Alert to the scene of crime where the skull of the little girl which was already severed from her body and other decomposing parts believed to be her remains were lifted from the pit, which contained greenish water.


Police boss speaks

Speaking to Crime Alert at the scene of the crime, the State Police boss explained that after committing the alleged sordid crime, the suspect threw the lifeless body of the young girl into a nearby well and vowed to bring him to book.

“His arrest and subsequent interrogation encouraged detectives to move to this place where this very horrendous spectacle was again discovered. It is a clear case of sunset at dawn. She may have gone but her soul is seriously crying for justice and this is what I will surely do,” Katsina promised.

Continuing, the Imo police boss said that apart from this sordid incident, investigations also revealed that “this very suspect is a serial killer, serial rapist and is responsible for the missing and death of many of our young girls, not only in Imo State but in some parts of the country.”

While describing the suspect as “an unrepentant killer”, the CP also said that “the man has been involved in many reported cases of ritual-related murders since 2004 till the time he was arrested. Investigations into the matter is on-going to unmask all those behind the dastardly act. I am hoping that pathologists will equally ascertain the real cause of the death of the innocent girl.”

How suspect was arrested

He recalled that the police had painstakingly been on his trail for about two months since little Ifunanya was reported missing by her parents. Giving a graphic account of how the suspect was eventually apprehended, the CP explained that soon after the girl was reported missing, the suspect quietly escaped to Aba, Abia State.

“He later sneaked into Nkwerre when he thought that the search for the missing girl had died down. He was, however, wrong because the Ambush Squad of the Command quickly arrested him on getting wind of his return to base.

It is sad to note how people can be very heartless. On noticing that the innocent girl had died in the process of raping her, the suspect carefully but shamelessly threw her remains into a nearby pit.”

South American country Uruguay is set to become the first country in the world to allow its citizens to grow, sell, buy and smoke marijuana. The country's Senate began its final debate on the issue today Tuesday Dec. 10th and claim they want to legalize it in a bid to take the business from criminals.

If this bill, which has the support of majority of the House and the president of the country, is passed, Uruguay will be the first country to legalize a trade that is illegal everywhere else in the world.

After the trade is made legal, Uruguay will then draft regulations imposing state control over the cultivation and distribution of marijuana. Anyone who wants to go into the business would have to be licensed and registered, with government monitors keeping tabs to enforce limits, such as the 40 grams a month that any adult will be able to buy at pharmacies for any reason.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on Monday made their decision not to return to class as directed by the Federal Government until all the agreement reached are properly signed. “How can you call off a strike when there is nothing to show for it?The government is not qualified to call off the strike. Our union is awaiting the government to state all it has done in black and white. However, it is a serious insult on us for the government to be harassing us with sacking threat. We are not casual workers or labourers. Our research work has been ongoing.”

The striking university teachers also refused to sign any form of attendance registers in their institutions as was directed by the government. They said they were only waiting for the sack letters the Federal Government threatened to give them if they did not return to work.. The National Treasurer of ASUU, Dr. Ademola Aremu, said they would have wasted their time and effort if they caved in and returned to work under threat. Also, the UNICAL ASUU Chairman, Dr. James Okpiliya, insisted that the Federal Government must meet the lecturers’ demands before the strike could be suspended.

However, majority of Nigerians are asking Pastor Okotie who has married and divorced twice, if God does not hate divorce, according to the Scriptures. Pastor Okotie had predicted ‘hell’ for Catholics ‘because they worship Satan and are led by an Anti-Christ Pope who is a friend to the devil’. Okotied added that the Catholic Church was “a counterfeit church set up by Satan” and that Catholics “bow to idols and crucify Jesus every Sunday when they eat bread claiming they are eating Jesus’ body.” “They are not Christians and have never been,” Okotie told a bewildered congregation. “They don’t know Jesus.
They believe that when they eat bread on Sundays, they are eating the body of Jesus. It’s ritual,” Okotie said. He also alleged that Pope Francis is an Anti-Christ who does the job of the devil and that time is fast approaching when the Catholic church will pledge allegiance to Satan. “The pope is an Anti-Christ and the Catholic church will soon declare for Satan. The Federal Government, yesterday, reviewed the seven-day ultimatum given to striking university lecturers to resume today or be sacked as it now gave them till Monday, December 9. This came as most members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities remained adamant and vowed to continue with the strike until their demands were met.

ASUU president, Dr. Nasir Issa Fagge has also assured that once the government opens the bank account with N200 billion as requested by the union, the strike would be suspended.

Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, who announced the shift in the date for the compulsory resumption of Federal Universities to Monday, December 9, said it was as a mark of respect for the former National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Professor Festus Iyayi, who died in an auto accident on his way to a National Executive Committee meeting of ASUU.

Speaking in Abuja, yesterday, Mr Wike said that the family of the late Professor Iyayi officially informed the ministry of the burial rites for the late ASUU President through the National Universities Commission, NUC, on Monday, hence the shift in the mandatory resumption date.

He said that the Federal Government will fully participate in the burial rites of the former ASUU President.

According to a statement by the minister’s Special Assistant, Simeon Nwakaudu: “The decision to shift the date of the compulsory resumption of Federal Universities for academic activities has been taken as a result of the respect we have for the former ASUU President”.

Wike stated that the Federal Government took the decision to re-open the universities in the interest of Nigerians and not to engender any form of show-down with ASUU.

He said Nigerians must appreciate the fact that the pro-chancellors and chairmen of the Federal Universities Governing Councils took the decision to re-open the schools, pointing out that the Federal Government’s directive was to the vice-chancellors who are expected to comply with the directive of the pro-chancellors.

The minister also said that the Federal Government has already opened a dedicated account for the revival of infrastructure in the universities, while the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education has signed the resolution that the Federal Government will commit N1.3trillion into the revival of infrastructure in the universities.

He stated that despite the repeated misrepresentation of facts on the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, the Federal Government had implemented over 80 per cent of the issues contained in the document, with only the payment of earned allowances and revitalisation of infrastructure pending.

Complying lecturers to get salary arrears

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, who briefed journalists in Abuja, yesterday, said the Federal Government was ready to pay the four-month salary arrears owed academic staff who returns to work.

According to him: “Councils have been directed to shift the resumption date to December 9. The new deadline, has already been communicated to the Pro-Chancellors Tuesday (yesterday) morning.

“The Federal Government as an employer of labour cannot just fold its arms while the institutions remain shut and its clients — the students — continue to suffer.

“You cannot pay someone who has failed to resume work. You are on strike and you want to be paid. What if some have already left the system? Some of our very bright lecturers may have got jobs elsewhere already.”

Okojie noted that “the resumption order does not necessarily mean students would commence academic activities immediately but the school environment has to be put back in shape as reptiles may have taken over some places, and the Senate of each institution has to revisit the academic calendar. Students would be expected to resume one or two weeks after the December 9 resumption deadline,”.

Okojie while responding to several issues raised by ASUU, insisted that it was a general consensus at the November 4, 2013 meeting with the President to have the Permanent Secretary of the Education Ministry sign the resolutions reached after the meeting.

Okojie stressed that the issue of the inclusion of a non-victimization clause as now demanded by ASUU did not even come up at all during and after the meeting.

“Jega and Awuzie are past ASUU chairmen. Are they not holding good positions in Nigeria today? Why would anyone victimize someone for exercising his right? If anyone would do such a thing, not the Jonathan government. In fact the mood that day did not reflect such, we were all smiles and hugs. After that meeting we were all hopeful that was the end of the crises,” he said.

He wondered why ASUU would return three weeks later, after it had failed to get back to government on November 8 as agreed, and demand addition of new clauses.

He said: “The 2009 Agreement stipulates that any party that wants a re-negotiation should inform the Ministry of Labour. If ASUU had said they would resume, but the outstanding issues must be addressed, government would have no choice,”.

On the N200 billion revitalization fund which ASUU is demanding should be disbursed within two weeks, Okojie diclosed that the money has been deposited in an account in the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“The money cannot, however, be disbursed just anyhow because they are meant for capital projects”, he said.

Okojie again appealed to the striking union to return to work in the interest of students who he described as the victims.

“One of the universities in Uganda where our children are enrolling, neigbouring countries do not even accept their degrees. Our children are going to schools with poorer degrees,” he lamented.

ASUU gives condition for strike suspension

Meanwhile, the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Nasir Issa Fagge, yesterday, gave conditions for the suspension of the six month old strike. Fagge who spoke on Channels Television, yesterday morning, said once government opens the bank account with N200 billion, requested by the union, the strike would be suspended.

He said “once that is done, and the committee that is supposed to disburse the funds starts working, our members will have no reason not to suspend the strike action”. Dr. Faggie said the union insists on documentation.

He asked: “Why won’t government make available this money so that we know the money is there and the universities commence drawing from this money to address the problem of decay in infrastructure, teaching and research facilities? When that is done, our members will suspend the strike.”

The ASUU president dismissed insinuations in some quarters that the union had been split. On suggestions in some government quarters that ASUU was being influenced by opposition parties, Dr. Fagge said “ASUU is a union of cerebral intellectuals”. He said the union is not influenced by religion, or ethnicity, saying however that members of the union are free to associate with any political party of their choice.

UNICAL resumes today

The University of Calabar has announced that the university resumes today for academic activities and directed all students who did not finish their registration to do so immediately.

But Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities, Unical chapter, Dr. James Ekprinya has warned parents that the university is still on strike and that any one that releases his ward is doing that at his peril.

The university in a press release by the Deputy Registrar, Academic division, Mr. Mike Monity stated that, “Normal Academic/Allied activities will resume tomorrow, the December 4, 2013 at the University of Calabar.

Monity in a release said the resumption was the decision reached at an emergency meeting of senate held at the senate chambers of the Institution.

It further stated that “the decision is in compliance with the directive issued by the Minister of Education” and that details of the revised university calendar would be disclosed in due course.

It also advised students with pending activities like second semester registration, Final year and Post Graduate research projects to start immediately as the school works out time table for lectures.

The ASUU chairman, Dr. Ekpirinya said that the congress rose from its congress with “a strong resolve to continue the strike until the agreements are implemented to the letter.

“We did not close school, we will not re-open it. We warn parents that any one who decides to send his or her ward to school is doing so at his or her peril.”

Iyayi: UNIBEN ASUU vows to continue strike

University of Benin chapter of ASUU, yesterday, vowed to continue the current strike action and admonished President Goodluck Jonathan to embrace dialogue with the union rather than threats.

Meanwhile, no sign of resumption of academic activities at the university yesterday, despite the announcement by the university authorities Monday, calling on students and academic staff to resume duties.

When Vanguard visited the university, it was observed that registers were opened as directed by the Federal Government but none of the academic staff were sighted on campus. Rather members of the ASUU and students were observed preparing for the burial of the late former President of the union, Professor Festus Iyayi which is scheduled for this weekend.

Some of the students who spoke to Vanguard, condemned the Federal Government’s order that the ASUU should resume duties or risk sack, just as they urged President Goodluck Jonathan to sack the supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Nwike, whom they described as a “sycophant”.

Addressing journalists yesterday, chairman of the UNIBEN Chapter of the ASUU, Dr Anthony Monye-Emina who was recently involved in the accident that led to the death of ProfessorIyayi, advised parents to inform their children to stay at home, insisting that the strike action will not be called off until the Federal Government implements the agreements.

According to him: “We want to advise parents not to send their children back to campus in the event of any announcement of resumption of classes by the university administration in line with the supervisory Minister’s directive. The union has not called off the strike. The President should continue on the path of honour to dialogue with the union as this is the only way to find an immediate and lasting solution to the crisis in the university system.”

UNIJOS ASUU waits for directives

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNIJOS, chapter said, yesterday, that classes would only resume in the institution if directed by the national body.

The chapter Chairman, Dr David Jangdam told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos that the lecturers were waiting for directives from the nation body before the five-month strike could be called off.

“Classes will only resume if directed by the national body,” he said. Jangdam told NAN that the decision of the national body was final and binding on all local chapters. A correspondent of NAN, who visited both the temporary and permanent sites of the university in Jos reports that they were deserted.

NAN further reports that the only visible presence was those of security personnel at the various entry and exit points. Jangdam also rejected suggestions that the lecturers had not been fair to university education in the country. “Nigerians should ask the leaders why the educational sector is usually the least in their priorities,” he said.

He, however, said that the union on Monday met with the institutions Student Union Government (SUG), at their instance to explain its position on the continued strike.

The SUG President, Mr Ajik Magaji told NAN that he would not comment on the outcome of the meeting for now. He described the strike by ASUU as a huge threat to national security while blaming the Federal Government for reneging on agreements.

Magaji lamented that the strike had caused the students a whole session. “In UNIJOS, for instance, we lost a complete session to strikes; some of our classmates in other schools have graduated and we are still here,” he said.

ASUU -UNAAB warns members against signing register

The University of Agriculture Abeokuta chapter of ASUU has vowed not to be cowed by the sack threat by the Federal Government, warning its members against signing the register by the University.

Addressing newsmen, yesterday, at the COPLANT auditorium of the University, the chairperson for ASUU -UNAAB, Dr. Biodun Badmus said the Union would not resume as directed by the Federal Government.

Badmus who was flanked by some past leaders of the union in the university advised the Federal Government to implement the agreement made with the Union for the sake of the students in the country.

Speaking on the plans by the union against any member that signs the register, Dr. Badmus said that the union would not hesitate to discipline any member of the Union who signs back to work register.

He said “ Of course, even in the days of Jesus Christ there are Judases, it is envisaged and the union has its practices and code of conduct and there are laid down procedures to thrash out such areas should anybody sign back to work”.

While proffering solution to the problem, the Union leader said “the ball is in the court of the Federal Government, ASUU has not closed its doors to dialogue. We appeal to the Federal Government to do what is needful. “If any meeting should be called, the National officers of ASUU are ready to meet the government to resolve the issue on ground”.

The sack order was made known by the Public Relations Officers (PRO) of the institution, Mr Chike Ezenwa, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Owerri, through telephone.

According to him, the senate of the university had declared all the positions of academic staff in the institution, adding that they would be advertised starting from Monday, December 2.

The senate council, he explained, had already compiled the list of vacant positions in the school, adding that who were willing to resume would be adequately protected.

Meanwhile, the FUTO branch of ASUU has said any attempt to break their ranks would be strongly resisted by their members.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end o their meeting held on Monday, and signed by both the chairman and secretary, Dr Ikenna Nwachukwu and Dr F.M. Eke respectively.

The communiqué urged members to ignore the resumption notice by FUTO management, adding that the branch would not engage in any academic activities until the Federal Government commited itself to implementing the ASUU-FGN agreement.

The Chairman of PDP in Anambra State, Prince Kenneth Emeakayi, was kidnapped today Monday Dec. 2nd by unknown gunmen who abducted him up as he was returning to Awka, the State capital.

Prince Emeakayi was said to be returning from his village in Okija when his car was intercepted at a junction in Nri and was taken away by the gunmen. He hasn't been heard from since and the kidnappers are yet to contact his family.

FORTY eight hours to the deadline given by the Federal Government to striking university lecturers to resume classes or be sacked, the union has remained adamant, advising parents not to risk the lives of their children by sending them to the campuses.

The Presidency, on its part accused ASUU leaders of treachery and warned the university lecturers not to dare the resolve of government to carry out its threat to sack them if they failed to resume.

The Senate President, David Mark has also cautioned the Federal Government over the threat to sack the striking lecturers just as the All Progressives Congress (APC) slammed the government for issuing the threat.
