Abuja – The Super Falcons on Thursday reached the final round of qualifying series for the African Women Championship2014, after Sierra Leone, their next opponent, announced their withdrawal. The Sierra Leonians cited lack of funds as the reason for their withdrawal. The championship, the 9th in the series, will hold in Namibia between Oct.11 and Oct. 25. Ademola Olajire, Assistant Director, Media, Nigeria Football Association (NFA), said this in a statement he issued in Abuja. The statement said Super Falcons, the national female team, were scheduled to play Sierra Leone in February for a slot in the final qualifying round. Super Falcons at their training for Nation’s Cup in Abuja on Tuesday “Both teams were due to square up in a qualifying duel in February. “Sierra Leone’s voluntary exit means that the Falcons will now have to wait for the winner of the fixture between Kenya and Rwanda to know their final round opponent.’’ The letter of withdrawal was addressed to the General Secretary, Confederation of African Football (CAF), Hicham El Amrani and copied to NFA by Sierra Lone Football Association. “I write with regrets to inform you of our decision to withdraw our national female football team from participating in the aforementioned championship. “This decision, which was reached at our last Executive Committee, is due to the present financial status of our Football Association. “The financial situation makes it difficult to honour our proposed fixture against Nigeria in February this year.`’ http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/01/super-falcons-qualify-for-namibia-2014/ |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied claims by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that it is dividing Nigeria along religious line, warning that even in its desperation to cling to power at all cost, the ruling party must desist from fanning the embers of religion ”This irresponsible accusation by the PDP that the APC is dividing Nigerians along religious line is a new low even for a party that stands for nothing but incompetence, looting and election rigging. It is an indication that the desperadoes in the PDP will throw everything, including the kitchen sink, into their campaign to stop the wave of change blowing across Nigeria,” the party said in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. The statement reads further that, ”no party wishing to lead Nigeria aright can do so on the basis of religion or ethnicity. Therefore, we are compelled to warn the PDP not to play what it believes to be its trump card, the religious card, against the APC, because whatever politicians do, they must refrain from ethnic or religious politics and put their country above selfish considerations. Only an irresponsible party will play the religious card for any reason,”. The party also accused the PDP’s top leader, President Goodluck Jonathan of kneeling down before respectable religious leaders and pushing the pictures into the media in an apparent ploy to score political gains. The spokesperson of the APC said it is neither logical nor rational to accuse his party whose 35 interim officials are almost equally split between the adherents of the two major religions (18 Muslims and 17 Christians) and cuts across all ethnic lines; a party whose elected officials – Governors, Senators, House of Representatives members etc – profess various faith and a party that has never expressed any preference for one religion over another as an ”Islamic” party. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/01/apc-islamic-party-lai-mohammed/ |

The Federal Ministry of Aviation has pulled down the profile of embattled Minister Stella Oduah from its website, in what appears an open admission that her bio contained falsehood and misleading claims. Although the website is still functioning, the link to Ms. Oduah’s profile has been deactivated as at 3.32 p.m. Nigerian time Thursday, when our reporter visited. The link now leads visitors to a 404 error suggesting the profile page had been taking down. Stella Oduah’s new bio without a university. It has now been pulled down Mrs. Oduah, and her associates have spent the last two days scrambling to clean up the minister’s biographies on the Internet, following allegations that she lied about her academic qualifications. Initially , her profile on the Ministry of Aviation was revised, with references to St. Paul’s College removed. This is what you get if you try to access the website The Wikipedia page of the minister was also edited and it now has no reference to the university Mrs. Oduah attended. The last edit on the Wikipedia page was done at 14:41 p.m. Nigerian time Tuesday. All links and reference materials on the Wikipedia page capable of linking the minister to the university that has disowned her have also been deleted. Even the minister’s personal website was reviewed to remove any reference to St. Paul’s College. The minister had claimed that she earned Bachelor and Masters degrees from St. Paul’s College but her claim to a masters degree has since been punctured. PREMIUM TIMES has also determined that the minister lied in her claim that she was awarded a honorary doctorate by a non-existing Pacific Christian University in the United States. Mrs. Oduah had since October been enmeshed in a a N255million armoured cars scandal in which she was accused of compelling an agency under her supervision, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, to buy her two exotic bullet cars at clearly inflated prices. The purchase of the cars generated outrage for weeks because its cost was inflated, and it was neither listed in the government-approved budget nor did it comply with the Nigeria’s public procurement law. The House of Representatives has since asked President Goodluck Jonathan to sack the minister but the president has failed to act. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/153038-ministry-aviation-pulls-stella-oduahs-profile-website.html |
