As a small or online business owner, above anything else, what you want is to increase sales, thereby increasing available cash to spend. One of the ways to achieve this is by understanding your customers’ buying journey and knowing what to do to move them to the next stage of buying. To be able to do this, you will need to map out the process from when your customer hears about your product or service to the point where they buy what you are offering. This process is called a Sales Funnel.. Before we go into what a sales funnel is, let’s evaluate this everyday scenario below. Lara has an important interview in a few days, so she wants to buy a new pair of shoes. But because she works long hours, she does not have the time to go shopping for it at her favourite shopping mall. She decides to buy them online, logs onto Instagram and after a few searches finds three shoe sellers in close proximity to her, selling a pair each of shoes she likes. She then follows their Instagram handles and direct messages (d.m) each of them of her interest to buy a pair of shoes she wants on their Instagram store. After chatting briefly with all three sellers, she is willing to pay for any of the three pairs of shoes but she would like to see the pair first before paying to make sure they match exactly with their images online. Now she has a problem, all three shoe sellers have refused to deliver the pair of shoes to her without first receiving payment from her. Lara on the other hand is also not willing to pay until she sees any one of the pair of shoes because she knows a refund is very unlikely after payment is made. One of the sellers realising Lara’s hesitation to make a buying decision decides to make Lara an offer to encourage her to complete the sale. She offers her a “one-and-only time payment on delivery” because she knows Lara is a first time customer and might be a little distrusting of online sellers. She also knows she has the opportunity to make Lara a life-long customer if she can win her trust, thereby continuously earning income from her over time. Who do you think Lara will buy a pair of shoes from? Well….. Lara agrees to this offer, sees and likes the pair of shoes, buys them and continues to buy products from this shoe seller long after her first purchase was made. Let’s get back to what a sales funnels is. WHAT IS A SALES FUNNEL? Money gang, Money gang. How much of that money do we really have? As a business, we know that cash flow (money) is the life blood of any business and to generate it, we need to make steady sales, which in-turn guarantees cash flow. This is absolutely important because without sales, you are really counting bridges in Lagos. Having ample cash on hand will ensure that your suppliers, vendors, employees/anyone helping you and most especially yourself can get paid. For you as a business owner, smooth running of your business is essential. That’s apart from ensuring you have the money to take care of your own personal needs and that of your dependants. The need for cash-flow cannot be over-emphasised. One needs money at hand to solve problems. Sadly, the many myriad of problems small and online based businesses in Nigeria face can be hard, especially when the economic environment makes it difficult to generate anything beyond a couple of sales within a long period of time. So this begs the question, how can you boost your sales in a weak economy?
