[b]The authorities of WAEC has announced the cancellation of the withheld 2014 WAEC results. This was decided at the 59th meeting of the council that was held in Lagos. We can now put this matter to rest by informing all candidates who had their results withheld that WAEC has finally decided to cancel their results. Read the full details as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) The National Examinations Committee of West Africa Examinations Council on Thursday said it had cancelled results of candidates involved in examination malpractice at the 2014 examinations. According to the News Agency of Nigeria , the WAEC Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Damianus Ojijeogu, made this known in a statement in Lagos. The committee, he said, took the decision to cancel the results at its 59th meeting held in Lagos. Ojijeogu said the committee reviewed a report on irregularity and special and clemency cases arising from the conduct of the May/June 2014 West African Senior School Certificate at the meeting. The statement added that the committee considered a report on the conduct of the November/December 2014 WASSCE, including irregularity cases arising from the conduct of the examination. It said, “In the course of considering the various reported cases of malpractice, the committee, after diligent deliberations, approved appropriate sanctions in all established cases of malpractice. “This action is as prescribed by the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the council’s examinations. “It approved that the entire results of such candidates involved in proven cases be cancelled. “The communiqué also recommended that the subjects’ results of those involved in proven cases of malpractice be similarly cancelled. “In addition, some candidates will also suffer other sanctions, such as barring them from sitting for the council’s examinations for a certain number of years.” The statement said that the decisions of the committee would be implemented immediately. It, however, said that the council would release results of candidates exonerated by the committee. According to the communiqué, the committee’s sanctions will also impose sanction on all the ad- hoc examination workers that condoned the malpractice. “The committee has directed all the ad-hoc examination functionaries indicted of involvement or condoning malpractice during the conduct of the examination, be reported to appropriate state ministries of education. “The ad-hoc examination functionaries, who participated during the November/December 2014 WASSCE, would also be reported to relevant bodies for disciplinary action. “This will be in addition to the sanctions imposed on them by the council. “The committee, as in previous meetings, strongly expressed concern at the alarming incidence of malpractice in examination and urged stakeholders to join hands in curbing the menace,” it said. The Federal Government has set up a committee to screen certificates obtained by Nigerian students who studied abroad. This was made known by Prof. Julius Okojie, the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC). According to Okojie, the committee is made up of members from the NUC and the Federal Ministry of Education. “When they come for NYSC, they are referred to the Ministry of Education to look at the quality of their certificates. “Recently, the ministry decided to set up a joint committee of NUC and the Federal Ministry of Education to look at the quality of those certificates; the committee has been set up but it has not been inaugurated. “In Ukraine, where we have many of our stu[dents for instance, it is not that all the universities are bad; some are really good but it depends on which one. “Some of our students who attended universities in Ukraine pass through the UK and get a second degree; in some countries, you can buy a certificate in the airport.’’ He further stated that knowing that a foreign university was approved was not enough as the programme pursued by a student might not be approved. source: http://myschool.com.ng/school/news/36373/fg-sets-up-committee-to-screen-degrees-obtained-abroad.html cc lalasticlala fynestboi |

The out-going Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan recently commented on what he expects the incoming administration that will be led by General Buhari to do in the education sector. According to him, there are already agreements on ground signed by the outgoing administration which promised to release N1.3trillion to the Universities. He mentioned that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, will tackle Buhari if he fails to act in his first six months in office. In his words, "... Buhari will have to find money to pay for the settlement of the 2014 and 2015 agreement." "If he cannot get money immediately, he will have to call ASUU to a meeting and tell its members that he needs a breathing space on the challenges he inherited. He must state his reasons and I am sure that the union, being an association of responsible people, will listen to him. The President cannot pretend that the agreement does not exist." "He will have to do a surgical operation in the education sector. We need to rebuild from the foundation. We must not only pay attention to tertiary education, we also need to pay attention to tertiary and secondary education systems. Education cannot be an orphan." "Buhari must put in place a mechanism to rebuild education in the country. People should not see the education sector as an item of expenditure but a short path to national development." He added.
