Members of Ofu-Obi Igbo Youth Organisation of Nigeria recently told Daily Sun correspondent how they struck a deal with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State to work for the governorship candidate of the party. The President of the group, Eze Nnaemeka Agbo said the agreement contributed to Ambode’s victory. Also, the Coordinator of the Coalition of South East Youths, Lagos, Chima Davis Ukwandu, corroborated Agbo’s position, revealing that both groups collaborated in wooing Igbo residents to cast their votes for Ambode. He also spoke about how they managed the pressure mounted on them from their kinsmen owing to Oba of Lagos’ insulting statement directed at the Igbos. Excerpt: The governorship election in Lagos had been concluded, what significant role did the Igbo people play in determining the eventual winner? I am the president of Ofu-Obi Igbo Youth in Lagos. We had an understanding with Joe Igbokwe who is the Publicity Secretary, APC, Lagos State. He met us sometime last year and pleaded that we work for his party. We told him point blank that we were not going to work for General Muhammadu Buhari of the APC, which we were already in for President Jonathan in his reelection bid. And we promised him that at the end of the day, having worked for Jonathan under Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that we would reassemble to discuss with him on how we will deliver Ambode as the next governor of Lagos State. We were very happy that he understood us and was not that too angry with us. Though he insisted that we work for Buhari, we told him point blank we were not going back on our resolve to deliver 100 per cent votes from Igbo youths to President Jonathan. In my group alone, we have over 5, 000 members in addition to other groups that we collaborated with, altogether, our youths were more than 50, 000. Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah played a key role in mobilizing our members for the president’s interest. Having done the presidential election, Igbokwe came back to us to solicit for our support to deliver Ambode. He reminded us that we promised to work with him and his party for the governorship election in Lagos. We are very happy that the agreement yielded good fruit. Mind you, Igbokwe came back for our support for Ambode, having seen our effort and how far we went in mobilizing Igbo youths to support Jonathan. We are actually the largest youth movement as a political organ in the state. In this group alone, we have more than 5, 000 members and other Igbo groups were altogether more than 50, 000 members. We came back and reminded us of our initial pledge to work for Ambode. We agreed to endorse Ambode and he gave us the APC’s flag. I am proud to say that after that day, my telephone line became busy as my kinsmen kept calling to know why we endorsed Ambode, having also realized the political tension that was in the state then due to what the Oba said about the Igbos. How did your kinsmen react to your romance with a candidate whom Oba Akiolu endorsed? Some of our members actually felt offended based on what the Oba said. Well, that was natural but Igbokwe whom we all see as our father took time to explain to us what actually happened and that the party was not in support of such statement. He went ahead to apologise on behalf of the Oba. Then, we buried the past and agreed that the future was brighter. We equally calmed our members and explained to them why they needed to support APC. After that endorsement, we were all out to mobilize Igbo youths for Ambode. And that was part of what gave Ambode victory. Why there were voters apathy in some areas was the fact that we told our members that it is either they vote Ambode or don’t vote, though it was not a threat. What gave your group assurance that Ambode was a better candidate than his opponents? Governor Babatunde Fashola has actually done a good job in Lagos. Regardless of what the Oba said, APC in the state has given the Igbo more leverage. It is only in APC that you have Igbo man as a Publicity Secretary, members of the executive and other key positions. The party gives all members a sense of belonging. Over the years, it has clearly shown that APC meant well for Lagos. There had been an Igbo commissioner in Lagos and there are many of them in the Civil Service. Why did you collaborate with Ofu-Obi Igbo youths to work for APC? As the coordinator of the Coalition of South East, I believe that APC meant well for Lagos people. We collaborated with Ofu-Obi because we needed to speak with a louder voice. Having come together, we were optimistic that atleast, we had gotten not less than 65, 000 votes of our members. So, for the sake of continuity, we went for APC so that Ambode would continue the beautiful projects that Fashola had begun in the state. It is not only the Igbo that voted for PDP, so Yorubas equally voted for PDP. How were you able to reach out to your people in the course of your campaign? We were networking through text messages. We went to club houses, football match viewing centres to spread the message to our people. We also instructed our members that each of them must get additional five votes for Ambode, so if you multiply that, you could imagine the figures. I congratulate the governor-elect and I want him to continue the good work in the state. SOURCE: http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=115100 |

Islamist Boko Haram militants disguised as preachers killed at least 24 people and wounded several others in an attack near a mosque in northeast Nigeria’s Borno state, a military source and witness said on Monday. The attackers arrived in cars late Sunday and gathered people at a mosque in the remote village of Kwajafa, pretending to preach Islam. They then opened fire on them, witness Simeon Buba said. The group’s six-year insurgency, and President Goodluck Jonathan’s failure to end it or protect civilians, were factors in the victory of opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari in last week’s election. The group fighting for an Islamic state has killed thousands and kidnapped hundreds, although a military operation against it by Nigeria and neighbors Chad, Cameroon and Niger in the past two months has wrested back much of the territory it controlled. “People didn’t know the Boko Haram men came for attack because they lied to our people that they came for preaching,” said Buba in a telephone conversation. “They opened fire on them and killed many people,” he said, adding that houses were set on fire. Some people were being treated for gunshot wounds and burns at a hospital in the Borno state town of Biu on Monday, a source there said. SOURCE : http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=113183 |
