The agricultural farm of the University of Ado Ekiti was yesterday looted. About 3,500 birds, 120 crates of eggs, 10 goats, 75 sheep, 25 rabbits, 30 pigs were carted away by students protesting the crushing to death of one of them by a hit and run driver. They also torched the institution’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre and set ablaze at least five vehicles and several buildings in the town. The university authorities said the losses might be more and immediately shut down the institution. Abiola Teslim Yusuf, a final year student died on Wednesday night of injuries he received after being run over by a vehicle close to Osekita Hostel, an off-campus students hostel in the town. The protesting students, about 150, launched out of their rooms early yesterday at the start of what was supposed to be a peaceful protest. However, the protest soon took a twist when the burning and looting started. The police spokesman in the state, Mr Victor Babayemi, said seven of the students who allegedly partook in the looting and vandalism have been arrested and a search for the fleeing driver commenced. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Oladipo Patrick Aina, condemned “the most barbaric conduct displayed by supposedly cultured youngsters.” He told reporters that investigation would soon commence into the incident and the culprits brought to book. He said the action of the students was capable of jeopardising the on-going infrastructural development in the institution. Announcing the immediate and indefinite closure of the institution, Aina said the management, working in concert with internal security officials, would assess the level of damage to buildings and other properties, as well as uncover the extent of the involvement of students and staff. Prof Aina was disappointed at the failure of the police to respond to the institution’s distress call before the protest got out of hand. He said: “I had called the Police authority at about 7am on Friday to inform them when I got a security report that the students were mobilising for protest over the death of their colleague only for them to come well after the damage had been done.” The police denied the allegation with their spokesman, Victor Babayemi, saying they acted promptly. The VC said he personally supervised the transfer of the accident victim to the Ikere Ekiti Specialists Hospital for medical attention immediately after the mishap. He said: “When we realised that his condition was not stable the way we expected, we moved him down to the Intensive Care Unit of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital. But on Friday, it was confirmed that he had to be operated upon by experts because he sustained serious head injury and this forced us to take him to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). “The student died in Ibadan while being taken to LUTH on Friday. These are our efforts to ensure that he survived even when we have not asked about who was responsible for the student’s death. “I even went to Osekita Hostel on Friday shortly before the incident and spoke with the students, but it was shocking and amazing that they had to take to such act after all our efforts. To us, this is unjustifiable action that will be thoroughly investigated.” |
Dr Lateef Adegbite lived a reputable life, and leaves an exemplary act in Islam. Credits to his personality. There's this act he depicted in Islam which I hope Muslims in Nigeria learn from: he was survived by just one wife. Farewell baba, sunn ree! |
The Nigeria Union of Teachers, Lagos State chapter and its counterpart, Ogun NUT have agreed to embark on indefinite strike if the state governments fail to pay 27.5 Teachers Salary Scale before 24th of September, 2012. The Lagos NUT boss, Comrade Samson Idowu, disclosed this recently at the launch of e-teaching learning process computers for teachers held at Alausa, Lagos. “We are looking forward to resume the new academic session as scheduled, unless we are barred by the inaction of the government on the full payment of 27.5 TSA to our teachers”, he added. Comrade Idowu said there is no going back on the strike if government fails to meet the demand of teachers. “The strike is not a warning strike because we have waited for long. Come 24th of this month, we shall embark on indefinite strike”, he said. “We had a meeting with the Lagos State government recently and they said the balance would be included in the 2013 budget. This should not be so. Why do teachers have to wait so long? We are not going to relent on our proposed strike until the Lagos State government hearkens to our demand. We want this money paid this year. This money has been due since 2008”, he said. |
monotechnics across the country over what teachers describe as the discriminatory application of the tertiary education training fund by the Federal Government. TETFUND, which is applied to the training of polytechnic teachers abroad, SATURDAY PUNCH gathered, is only disbursed for science-related courses. But the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, while deploring the manner the funds were disbursed, vowed to take up the issue with the government. National Publicity Secretary of ASUP, Mr. Clement Chirman, told SATURDAY PUNCH in an interview in Jos on Friday that the association was poised to ensure that the funds were equitably disbursed and also take up the issue of the 60-year age limit for beneficiaries of the TETFUND as against the present 50 years in view of the new retirement age of 65. Chirman said the association was asking the government to release the document on the Consolidated Salary Scheme 15 migration for the lower cadre of polytechnics and monotechnics as soon as possible to enable the authorities of various institutions to implement the new scheme. He said, “We have just held our 72nd National Executive Council meeting in Birnin Kebbi, and these were some of the issues we raised.” He said the patience of the NEC was running out over the delay in the constitution of the renegotiating team and implored the government to begin the process to avoid a breakdown of order in all polytechnics. Chirman said the association supported the transformation agenda of the Federal Government, but would want it to be pursued in a manner that would be beneficial to Nigerians. |

The CBN, in a statement on Thursday, also confirmed that it had received a presidential directive to stop action on the currency restructuring plan. The statement by the apex bank’s spokesperson, Ugo Okoroafor, reads, “The CBN hereby informs the general public that the President, on Thursday, September 20, 2012, directed that further action on the approved restructuring exercise be stopped. “It is important to stress that till date, no contract whatsoever has been awarded by the CBN in connection with the printing and minting of the new currency notes and coins. Consequently, no currency note or coin has been printed or minted under the proposed exercise.” The planned introduction of the note had attracted a huge outcry in the public domain. Those against the move had hinged their position on the fact that it could worsen inflation in the country. They also said it was contrary to the apex bank’s cash-less policy. At resumption on Tuesday, both arms of the National Assembly passed resolutions asking the CBN not to go ahead with the plan. But the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, said that the resolutions are advisory. Jonathan was said to have expressed his readiness to halt the process when he met with the President of the Senate, Mr. David Mark, and Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwwal, on Tuesday. |
