Humanoid robots will continue to replace humans in ever-more complex professions, according to robotics pioneer Hiroshi Ishiguro. Speaking to IBTimes UK, Ishiguro said human-like robots similar to the one currently being trialled as a shop assistant in Tokyo, Japan, will soon provide a better alternative to humans in professions that include modelling, acting and even singing "There are many possibilities, for example an idol singer [pop star]," Ishiguro said. "An android robot is more beautiful, probably, and they never get tired and can keep singing songs forever. "And how about a fashion model? Or newscasters and receptionists - even famous movie stars. Androids never get old and so you can keep a young identity by creating an android that will last forever." Ishiguro gained worldwide attention in 2010 after creating an android version of himself that could carry out his duties as a lecturer at Osaka University. His lab has also been responsible for creating an exhibition of humanoid robots designed to be indistinguishable from their human counterparts... Cars of the near future will stop themselves from working if they detect too much alcohol in the driver's bloodstream, using sensors which discreetly monitor their breath. As well as analysing a driver's breath, the system will also use a sensor embedded into the ignition button or gear stick to take a second reading by shining light through the driver's finger. click here to watch the short explanation video and read full post http://ajidaraviews..in/2015/06/tech-woooow-future-generation-cars-wont.html?m=0

Google is developing software capable of analysing still photos of food and counting the calories it contains, according to reports. Google research scientist Kevin Murphy unveiled the Im2Calories project at the recent Rework Deep Learning Summit in Boston, Popular Science reports, describing how the new form of artificial intelligence could transform the health and fitness applications found on smartphones. By using "sophisticated deep-learning algorithms" and "the depth of each pixel in an image" Im2Calories is able to determine both the type and portion size of the food. "If it only works 30% of the time, it's enough that people will start using it, we'll collect data, and it'll get better over time," Murphy said. "To me it's obvious that people really want this and this is really useful. OK fine, maybe we get the calories off by 20%. It doesn't matter. We're going to average over a week or a month or a year. "We can start to potentially join this information from multiple people and start to do population level statistics. I have colleagues in epidemiology and public health, and they really want this stuff." Im2Calories is still in the research and development phase but plans are already underway to test the technology in other situations. One possible application could be in analysing traffic patterns in order to help drivers find parking spaces. "If we can do this for food, that's just the killer app," Murphy said. "Suppose we did street scene analysis. We don't want to just say there are cars in this intersection. That's boring. "We want to do things like localise cars, count the cars, get attributes of the cars, which way are they facing. Then we can do things like traffic scene analysis, predict where the most likely parking spot is. "And since this is all learned from data, the technology is the same, you just change the data." Are you worried about robots replacing you in the workplace? Data from the University of Oxford shows that both white collar and blue collar jobs that require greater routine are most likely to become almost fully automated, while jobs where creative solutions are needed are less at risk. Dr Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael Osborne of the Oxford Martin School at Oxford University have been researching the impact of robotics on employment for several years, and their latest report Technology at Work: The Future of Innovation and Employment shows that big data and the Internet of Things (IoT) could have huge consequences on even white collar skilled labour jobs. Their report builds on earlier research from 2013, where Frey and Osborne analysed 702 professions to see whether the job required creative intelligence, social intelligence or perception and physical manipulation in order to complete it. The researchers analysed whether individuals had to negotiate with or persuade other parties, whether personal customer service was required, whether original or clever solutions were needed, and whether the data being processed could be taken on by a computer instead. One of the hottest topics for speculation in healthcare today is the unrealized potential for mobile health defined as technologies that use mobile devices, apps or telehealth to connect patients and physicians to transform the way healthcare is sought and delivered. Two-thirds of Americans own a smartphone, and companies are eager to tap this widespread technology for the benefit of patients, doctors and hospitals. But expert say it's not yet obvious how exactly mobile services might be leveraged in the bureucratic world of healthcare with its highly sensitive privacy issues. "The fact is that consumers are mobile so healthcare has to respond to that," Kathy Driscoll, strategic executive at the insurance company Humana, said at a panel discussion on mobile health held on Thursday at the Explorer's Club in Manhattan... A father of two attacked with a sawn-off shotgun would "undoubtedly have died" if it wasn't for the iPhone 5c in his pocket, which took the brunt of the blast. Daniel Kennedy, 25, was shot on a public footpath on 15 July 2014 in Widnes, Cheshire, after he challenged a group of teenagers who had switched off the local water supply as a prank. Most of the double-barrel shotgun's cartridge pellets struck Kennedy's green iPhone 5c, which was in his pocket, saving his life and buying him enough time to stagger toward the block of flats where he lived and call for help. Detective inspector Gary McIntyre of Cheshire Police said: "Fortunately, the victim's mobile phone took the brunt of the shot and, as a result of this, he survived. This is remarkable - had that phone not been in his pocket at that time he would undoubtedly have died." Ryan Duggan, 19, has been convicted of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. His actions were described by McIntyre as "extreme and shocking - the victim went outside to speak to the group about the fact they had turned off the water supply resulting in the defendant shooting him with a powerful weapon." Duggan will be sentenced on 10 July. 'It took me off my feet' Recounting his brush with death, Kennedy told Chester Crown Court: "He spun round. I saw him holding a big silver thing in his hand. There was a flash in front of me and I felt a burning sensation in the bottom of my body. It took me off my feet. " The gun was fired from a range of just five feet. Pathologist Dr Brian Rogers told the court how Kennedy's iPhone had saved his life. "If one of those pellets had [hit] his aorta and gone into a vital organ, it would have led to significant internal haemorrhaging. He would have lost too much blood and would have died before he got to hospital. Jordan Grimes, a 22-year-old friend of Duggan, has pleaded guilty to assisting an offender, having let the gunman stay in his Burnley flat after the incident. He is also due to be sentenced on 10 July. Source: http://ajidaraviews..com/2015/05/tech-how-iphone-5c-saved-mans-life.html

Google's self-driving cars will be let loose on the public roads this summer, following a test programme which has seen them cover over a million autonomous miles. Safety drivers will be onboard the vehicles, complete with removeable steering wheel and pedals to take control should the cars run into trouble, but once development is complete Google says the pod-like vehicles will not have any conventional controls at all, apart from an on/off button. The cars will be driving on public roads around the Mountain View area of California, close to Google's headquarters, and will have their top speed limited to 25 miles per hour. Google's cars will use the same software fitted to its fleet of self-driving Lexus RX450h SUVs, which has covered one million miles and is currently driving 10,000 autonomous miles every week. The new fleet of prototypes have the equivalent of 75 years of driving experience to learn from. Visual updates from Google's first fleet of autonomous cars include the addition of indicators, functional headlights, different wheels, and a more refined sensor cluster on its roof... Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by an organism called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It usually affects the lungs and is caught from other people. The body’s immune system, usually control or destroy the germs once they are inhaled leaving them inactive. This is called latent TB. If you develop TB symptoms this is known as active TB. Some people go on to develop active TB weeks or months later. In others TB can remain latent for many years before becoming active. This is more likely if your body is weakened by other medical problems. You are most at risk of developing active TB if your immune system is damaged or if it works less well following an organ transplant or treatment for conditions such as cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. The TB organism might cause one or many holes in one or both lungs. Healed TB can sometimes be seen on a chest X-ray as white dots of calcium or scars. What are the symptoms? TB can affect any part of the body but it usually affects the lungs or lymph glands. The most common symptom is a cough sometimes with phlegm, also called sputum. The phlegm might be blood-stained. There could also be a painful feeling in the chest, loss of weight or appetite and have a fever with sweating, particularly at night. When TB affects the lymph glands lumps might appear on your neck. How is TB diagnosed? TB is usually diagnosed by a chest X-ray and examining a specimen of your phlegm. Is it Contagious? TB can be passed onto others if there are lots of TB germs in your phlegm. Doctors sometimes call this ‘open TB’ or say one is sputum positive. If you are infectious you must stay at home and have no new visitors. To avoid passing TB on, cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough, then wash your hands and dispose of your tissues carefully. Once you start treatment, you stop being infectious very quickly. After two weeks, there is generally no risk to other people. But you should not return to work, school or college until your specialist or GP confirms you are no longer infectious. There is no risk of infecting others when TB germs cannot be seen in your phlegm. When TB affects only the lymph glands or other parts of the body, but not the lungs, this is not infectious. People you live with, those you spend a lot of time with and sometimes work colleagues will be offered a check-up. They are rarely found to have TB. The check-up usually includes a chest X-ray, a simple skin test and/or a blood test. Negative test results show they are not infected, so they will be offered a BCG vaccination if they haven’t previously been vaccinated. Positive test results show they have been infected with TB at some stage. A simple course of anti-TB medication is given to people, particularly children, who appear healthy but are at increased risk of illness if their latent TB becomes active TB. The BCG vaccination Babies and young people will be offered the BGG vaccination against TB if: they live in an area where there has been a lot of TB or their parents or grandparents were born abroad in an area with a lot of TB. The BCG vaccination does not protect you completely against TB, but it does help your body’s defenses to fight it off. The BCG vaccination lasts for many years. You only need to have it once. How is it treated? TB can be completely cured if you take a course of tablets for at least six months. Many people are treated at home only. But you might be admitted to hospital for the first week or so especially if you are very ill at the time of diagnosis or your doctor thinks you are highly infectious. If you are treated at home for TB there is no need for you to take special precautions such as using separate dishes or cutlery. You do not need to follow a special diet but eating well will help you to recover. Most people find that their appetite improves once they start taking their tablets. Remember: You should take most TB tablets half an hour before eating. Try not to miss taking your tablets. If you do forget them in the morning, take them later in the day. Don’t run out of tablets. Always get a new supply before they are finished. If you’re worried about your symptoms or your treatment, speak to your nurse or other health care professional. TB can be cured completely but only if you take your tablets regularly – and for the whole course. Do not stop just because you’re feeling well again. Only stop when your doctor tells you it is safe to do so. TB can become resistant to treatment if you stop taking your drugs. Are there side effects? One of the medications commonly used to treat TB, called Rifampicin, will give your urine an orange-red color. This happens to everyone taking this drug. Rifampicin might also permanently discolor your soft contact lenses. Rifampicin makes the oral contraceptive pill less effective. If you’re taking the pill, ask your doctor about other methods of contraception while you are on TB treatment. Tablets for TB do not usually cause problems, but if you develop yellowness around your eyes and on your skin, called jaundice, or a rash, itchiness, dizziness, difficulty seeing or you feel sick or experience pins and needles, consult your physician at once. If your medication is upsetting you, your treatment can be changed, but it must not be stopped completely until you are fully cured. How long does treatment last? You will have to visit the hospital clinic until your treatment is finished and sometimes a little longer. This will normally take six months. Most people only have to attend once every two to four weeks at first, then less often. Returning to work You should discuss returning to work with the specialist in charge of your treatment and your GP. Sometimes the TB is so mild that you will not need to stop working. Other people might need to stay off work until they are no longer infectious or they are strong enough to be fully active again. Always make sure you let your employers know that you are being treated for TB. Stay Healthy and don't forget to sahre and or drop comments!!! "You'll want to secure your bag," the Tesla press representative said, showing me a special space in the boot to put my laptop satchel. A strange request, I thought as I opened the door - but then she tapped at the car's touchscreen dashboard, switched on 'Insane' mode and all became clear. Visually identical to the other versions of Model S, the P85D has a 470 horsepower electric motor in the back and combines it with a second, 221hp motor powering the front wheels. This gives the Model S permanent four-wheel-drive and a total power output of 691hp and 687lb ft of torque - more than just about any other road car ever made, and completely unheard of in a five-seat saloon. Even more startling is how the P85D - all 2.2 tonnes of it - can sprint from standstill to 60 miles per hour in a supercar-beating 3.1 seconds, a full second quicker than the P85+ it replaces.... Today I found out why your stomach growls when you are hungry. Generally speaking stomach growling, or as the Greeks named it and Doctors call it today “borborygmi” (which is an onomatopoeia), is the noise created during rhythmic muscle contractions in your stomach and intestines. Your digestive system is one big long tube that goes from your mouth to your butt, with a lot of interesting biological machinery in-between. How the body gets food through this long tube is accomplished via waves of muscle contractions, called “peristalsis”, that run a few inches at a time all down your digestive track. These waves of muscle contractions also serve to mix and churn foods, liquids, and digestive juices together. The resulting cocktail is called “chyme”.... These waves of contractions are really not too dissimilar to how your heart beat works, creating fluctuation of electrical potential in the smooth muscle cells, which causes the muscle to contract in a rhythmic fashion- in this case, called the “Basic Electrical Rhythm” or BER. This rhythm is about 3 times per minute in the stomach, and 12 times per minute in the small intestines. The sound you are hearing when your stomach and intestines make noise are the result of these muscular contractions mixing and moving the chyme along, as well as pushing any resultant air through your system. So why does your stomach seem to growl more when you are hungry? When your stomach and intestines are empty, it triggers a reflexive generation of waves along your stomach and intestine muscles that trigger contractions, even though there isn’t really much of anything in your stomach that needs moved along. These are meant to clear out all of your stomach contents, including the mucus, any remaining food, bacteria, etc. It’s your body’s way of doing a little house cleaning, making sure no food or other matter is accumulating anywhere along your stomach or intestines. It’s typically this that you are hearing when you’re hungry. You might be asking yourself, “Well if my stomach is doing these contractions even when I’m full, moving food along, why don’t I hear them all the time?” To answer that, think of the stomach as hot water bottle. When it is full and you slosh the contents around, there is little to no noise, depending on just how full it is. The less you have in it, the more noise the sloshing makes. This is pretty much exactly what is going on with the stomach only the muscles lining the walls of your stomach and intestines are doing the sloshing as they push the contents of your stomach and intestines towards your derriere. So how does one avoid stomach growling when, say, you are in a quiet classroom taking a test in school or a quiet open office space? The best tip of course is to eat something. But to do this relatively continually without over eating, one needs to eat a series of small meals throughout the day instead of a few large ones. This is also in fact better for you anyways. So probably the best way to go. For those of us who stick to the few “big meals” way of eating though, in order to avoid the sometimes embarrassing growling, I’ll share two tricks of my own device; though I’m sure many others out their have discovered these. Both tricks amount to accomplishing the same thing, but in two different ways. The first trick is, when you feel a growl coming on, to take something like a pencil and quite literally push it hard into your stomach area (eraser end first of course). If you push it hard enough, it will literally compress a part of your stomach, giving it much less space to slosh or even stopping it from being able to slosh at all temporarily. I’ve found just pushing on the stomach area with your hand, tends to not work as well. Something small and thin like your finger or a pencil, seems to work better; probably to do with focusing on a small surface area and specifically on your actual stomach instead of just pushing your upper belly with your hand which also pushes some of your other organs, so less effective. The second trick is, when you feel a stomach growl coming on about 10 or 15 seconds before, take a really deep breath; as deep as you can. Then hold your breath until you feel the growl sensation pass. This effectively does the same thing as the previous method, but from the inside with your lungs expanded pushing down on your stomach and compressing it so that it can’t slosh things about. The “pencil method” works better, but this is a pretty reliable backup and is hands free. If anybody else has any good tips they’ve figured out on stopping stomach growling in potentially embarrassing situations when you can’t get food or if anybody’s used my above two methods in the past. feel free to share and comment below. Next year's BMW 7-Series will be the world's first production car which can park itself without the driver even being aboard. BMW's i3 electric car already packs self-parking features – as do vehicles from Volvo and Audi – but the new 7-Series will be the first t let you park the car while not bein in it. Simply park near the space or your garage, step outside and pre a button on the car's key fob. It wi then use an array of sensors dotte around the car's body to park itsel in the tightest of spaces. The feature is useful for owners who have a very narrow garage, saving them from knocking the door on the wall, and the discomfort of squeezing out of a half-opened door. See picture of the car here http://ajidaraviews..in/2015/04/tech-autonomous-bmw-7-series-can-park.html?m=1 |
