Education / A Journalist, Qualities And Roles In The Media by mymediajourney(m): 11:18am On May 18, 2023
Journalists are mostly defined by the roles they perform in their daily works and tasks. Journalists are sometimes known as the all-news-media personnel who have editorial responsibility for the preparation or transmission of news stories or other basic information units. In the previous lesson under journalism, we got to know that journalism entails the gathering, assessment, creation and presentation of news stories. Based on this, we can deduce the definition of a journalist as the professional responsible for gathering, assessing, creating and disseminating news stories and facts to the public through the various available mass media. A journalist’s solemn aim is to always alert the public and share new stories with them. There are various issues happening around us yet we do not have the ‘eyes’ to see them; it takes the expertise and experience of a journalist to discover such issues and report them to the public. A journalist does not only write and disseminate news to the public, but they also photograph as we discussed in the forms of journalism.

Daily news and updates are always expected to be coming from journalists. They are therefore relied upon to present news in a concise and objective manner without any biases or addition of emotions. A journalist goes beyond wherever it is expected of them just to cover stories and share to the public. That is why there are investigative and crime journalists who sometimes risks it all just to cover stories of public interest and benefit. Journalists sometimes go the extreme of building relationships, banging on people’s door just to get access to information and present them. That is who a journalist is and that is what differentiate them from news anchors and news presenters who are always in the studio to present news covered by the journalists. For journalists, writing a news story could be done everywhere, whether a hotel, in the house or even office. Have you ever imagined how journalists are able to produce news out of interviews? This is the reason why they are journalists, they are created to fit everywhere and perform their functions.

Education / The Human Diversity by mymediajourney(m): 10:59am On May 18, 2023
The first human diversity to consider is the racial diversity. Racial from the word race. There are over seven billion people worldwide and there are many races as well. The estimated figure mentioned above are all humans so despite the racial differences, there is no race that is more human than the other. Every race is unique and must be tolerated in the world society. However, in some parts of the world, people tend to abuse others because of their race despite living with them in the same society. In the European countries for instance, black people are normally marginalized as the whites see them to be inferior despite the various measures being put in place to curb this racial abuse.

There are some races that are finding it difficult to fit-in in some western countries and even all over the world. People try to deprive people of their human rights in the name of their race. There are various police brutality incidences happening each and every day against some races who the society assume are criminals, are thieves or even not fully humans. There African players who are suffering a lot on the various European pitches because of racial abuse. It is not only Africans who are victims of this racial abuse, Asians are being abused, and even Latinos, Arabs, and most importantly Albinos even though they are not a race. However, as a society, it is advisable to respect the various race differences and include them. People should not be deprived of certain roles in the society because of their race, no one had a choice to choose a race he or she must belong to.

Education / Attribution In Journalistic Writing by mymediajourney(m): 9:08am On Sep 30, 2022
In journalism, journalists are opined to write news stories that are educating, informing, entertain, and persuading others. News stories are real-life situations therefore it is factual. It is real so journalists are to report on accurate news.

Journalists rely on sources to get these facts and these facts are based on evidence or proof. Thus journalists are expected to provide shreds of evidence for whatever they are reporting. In journalistic writing, these shreds of evidence come in the form of videos, pictures, recordings, quotes, and attributions.

Why is Attribution Necessary?
Attribution in journalistic writing is stating who said something. Attribution is important in all aspects of media including television and radio. Journalists attribute so that their readers know who is what, who is speaking or where the information comes from. Attribution gives the information credibility. We attribute what we do not observe or know to be factual. Attribution can be used for both spoken and written information. Spoken information that is attributed is gathered from interviews, films, radio, and television stations. Written information that is attributed is gathered from speeches, books, reports, and newspapers.

Education / Communication In Mass Media by mymediajourney(m): 1:00pm On Aug 25, 2022
Communication can be seen from a broader sense since it’s always part of us. There have been scholars who through their dictionaries, have provided different meanings to communication. Below are some of the definitions of communication by some famous dictionaries and scholars;

The Longman Dictionary defines Communication as “the process by which people exchange information or express their thoughts and feelings”.

Louis Allen also defined Communication as “the sum of all the things one person does when he wants to create understanding in the mind of another.”

Keith Davis defined communication as “a process of passing information and understanding from one person to another.”

The Cambridge Dictionary defines Communication as “the various methods of sending information between people and places, especially phones, computers, radio, etc.”

The Oxford Dictionary in 2019 defined Communication as “The transmission or exchange of information, knowledge, or ideas, by means of speech, writing, mechanical or electronic media.”

There are many of them, more of them that can’t be captured in this article. A lot of definitions were developed by many great scholars based on their observations on the communication on daily basis. Based o the few definitions provided above, it can be observed that most of the scholars talked about thoughts and feelings or understanding. Others also emphasized on the transmission which means transmission is always through a medium or channel. Communication always begins with a process and a source. As I am communicating with you through this article, the source here becomes me and the mode of transmission or channel becomes the phone, tablet, laptop or any electronic device you use in accessing this article. The fact that you read and understand this piece means you are the destination of the information being communicated to you. Let’s dive into the communication process;

The meriam-webster.com defines a model as a pattern or figure of something to be made. Models of communication here indicate the various ways communication is achieved in our day-to-day life and especially in public speaking. It would be uncivilized on the part of a public speaker who knows not the models of communication and this is why mymediajourney.com has come to help solve all these issues in the media world.

Shannon and Weaver propounded the first ever communication model in history. Their main aim was to use the propounded model of communication on radios and televisions but by the time they realized this, humans have adopted it into their day-to-day life of communication. The models broadened and eventually, two other models were added later. The three models are the linear model of communication, the interactional model of communication, and finally, the transactional model of communication.
