EducationBreaking News: ASUU, Nasu, Ssanu Shut Down Unn Indefinitely by Myself21(op): 9:11pm On Dec 18, 2013
Barely one day after the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, suspended its 5-month old strike, the University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, has been shut down indefinitely by the institution’s workers, Daily Post reports.

During the serious protest in the University on Wednesday, all the workers union demanded the immediate sack of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bartho Okolo.

According to Vanguard, it was the largest demonstration of members of staff of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, since the university was founded.

Academic and non-academic workers of both campuses converged on the campus in a spontaneous peaceful demonstration to demand the reinstatement of the Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof Emeka Enejere, who was said to have been suspended.

They chanted songs saying it was the Vice Chancellor, Prof Bartho Okolo, instead, who should be sacked.

After marching for half of the day and some members of staff addressed the press at the Freedom Square, they however, dispersed, promising to return for daily demonstrations until the Council Chairman was reinstated and other ills of the university which they alleged originated by Prof Okolo were corrected.

A professor told Vanguard that "the Federal Government would have to choose between only one man (Okolo) or working with all of us."

It has been gathered that Okolo is accused of corrupt practices and neglect of due process in running the affairs of the university.

CelebritiesVIDEO: Jay Z Tribute To Nelson Mandela by Myself21(op): 11:42pm On Dec 10, 2013
The late, great Nelson Mandela inspired countless individuals during his lifetime through his courageous actions, and has since been aptly commemorated in his wake. Last night, Jay Z dedicated a live rendition of "Young Forever" to the South African revolutionary at the Los Angeles stop of the "Magna Carter" Tour.
Hov respectfully made this the closing moment of the night at the Staples Center. With some assistance from a live band, the legend in his own right commanded the crowd to sing along with Mr. Hudson's inspiring chorus. Needless to say that they complied by emphatically chanting the lyrics as well.

Additionally, MCs like Nas, 50 Cent, The Game, and tons of others have paid homage to Mandela. Expect the man also known as Madiba and his many accomplishments to be championed by more people in the coming weeks; and justifiably so.

CelebritiesLots Of Cheques That People Donated Bounced - OJB Says In New Interview by Myself21(op): 10:09pm On Dec 10, 2013

During a recent interview with HipHop World magazine, OJB said that many cheques given to him towards his kidney transplant, bounced.

There are well meaning and bitter people in Naija. Most people were just complaining and these people didn’t even donate. All the figures flying in the air then were just fake and make-belief from different angles because if we had the money we wouldn’t have the governor donate N16million.

Lots of cheques that some people donated bounced. I don’t want to mention names and when we called them to come for their cheques they didn’t come for it. We didn’t want to talk about it in the media because it was about saving a life.

He also talks about his gratitude to his wife for donating her kidney to him, and about the man who gave him N6m to renovate his house, $10,000 for medical expenses and bought him a 2010 Land Rover. See that after the cut...

About his wife, he says:

I will say she is a wonderful person because it is one thing if God is telling you to do something but another to do it. It takes a lot of courage to actually do it. Just as Jesus had made the water for Peter to walk on, Peter needed a lot of courage to take that step and that was what she did at that dying minute.

Even when the doctors came to tell her that they would have to cut her all the way to the back and would have to remove a rib so they could have access to the kidney and if after that you still go ahead to do it then that is serious courage.

About the man who gave him a lot, OJB tells Encomium magazine

A man named Felix Edebor who lives in Abuja has been very helpful. The first day he came he dropped N6million cheque, and it really encouraged us to start the building. When we were India he visited us and gave us $10,000. He later started talking about my mobility and days after he bought me a Land Rover LR 3 2010 model for me. And I didn't know the guy from Adam. I just feel what happened was not human.

PoliticsShocking! Power Outtake In A Nigerian Aeroplane | A Must See by Myself21(op): 10:03pm On Dec 08, 2013

The first thing that hits anyone who comes to Nigeria is the airport. The airports are in a very bad state. The air conditioners are hardly working. People wait for several hours to get their baggage from the carousels From the skyview you will mistake our airport to a game park surrounded by scary bush, with the rusty.

However, Dele Momodu recently tweeted to the aviation minister about the dilapidatng state of the aviation sector. Power outtake in an aeroplane! This is bad. See his tweet below..

PoliticsPanic And Confusion As Student Attacks Teacher With Machete | See Photo by Myself21(op): 12:01pm On Dec 08, 2013

There was anxiety over the state of health of a teacher at the Osogbo Grammar School, Osun State, identified simply as Mr. Olamoyegun, on Thursday as a pupil of the Government Technical College in the town attacked him with a machete Although what led to the attack on the teacher was still sketchy, our correspondent, however, gathered that the pupil pulled a surprise attack on the teacher, making it impossible for him to defend himself. Some pupils of the OGS told our correspondent that the attacker, whose name had yet to be identified, attacked the teacher from the back and inflicted a deep cut on his head with the cutlass. One of the OGS pupils, whose name is withheld for security purpose, said, “I think the person that attacked Mr. Olamoyegun is a cultist. That is what everybody is saying here because he just sneaked behind our teacher and attacked him with the cutlass in his hand. He did not give Mr. Olamoyegun the chance to defend himself. “Now, everybody is worried because nobody knows whether our teacher survived the attack.”

PUNCH Metro, however, learnt that Olamoyegun was rushed to the Government House Clinic from where he was referred to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo. Some of his colleagues in the school said he had been responding to treatment. But when the Principal of Osogbo Grammar School, Mr. A. O. Akinlusi, was contacted on the telephone, he declined comment. He said, “Go to Dada Estate Police Station. Members of the group involved are in police custody.” The Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, promised to find out what actually happened and call our correspondent back. She, however, had not done this as of the time of going to the press.
But the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun State Command, Mr. Ayo Olowe, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone. Olowe said, “The teacher has been treated and he is now okay. The situation is calm now.” A similar incident happened at St. Mark Grammar School, Osogbo on Wednesday where a pupil was reportedly stabbed by one of his mates. Although there was apprehension in the school over the condition of the pupil, he was said to have survived the attack.

There has been growing incidences of violent attack in secondary schools in the state following the merger of schools in the new education policy of Governor Rauf Aregbesola. There was a violent clash at Baptist Girls High School, Osogbo about three weeks ago as some suspected cult members in the school engaged in a bloody clash with a rival cult group from another secondary school. The Principal of Baptist High School, Ejigbo, Mr. Layi Oguntola, was also attacked last week by some Muslim youths, who invaded the school over the allegation that he sent a pupil wearing Hijab, a scarf for Muslim women, away from the school. Oguntola has debunked the claim, saying he merely caned the female pupil because she was unruly.

Celebrities2face, Dbanj, Iyanya, Banky &others Banned By Nigerian Broadcasting Organization by Myself21(op): 11:01pm On Dec 05, 2013
https://naijabang.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/2face-banky-w-banned.jpg
The Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, BON, and the Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria, IBAN, have stopped airing musical productions belonging to Chief Ebenezer Obey, 2Face Idibia, Onyeka Onwenu, Banky W and thousands of other members of the Copyright Society of Nigeria, COSON. In a statement jointly signed by Sonny Adun and Guy Murray Bruce, IBAN Chairman and Secretary respectively, the two bodies said they were constrained to take this step principally as “a result of COSON’s attitude of antagonism and harassment under the leadership of Tony Okoroji (COSON Chairman)”. “No person or organisation, particularly a collection society such as COSON has a monopoly of authority over any other…IBAN and BON have the utmost respect for Nigerian artistes in their individual and collective capacities and have indeed contributed more than any known institution to the promotion of Nigerian music and the development of the entertainment industry as a whole,” the statement reads.

But in a swift reaction, Okoroji, COSON boss, said his organisation has read with amusement the empty threat by the leadership of BON that its affiliate stations would no longer play the music of Nigerian citizens on Nigerian stations because Nigerian musicians are asking for their right to be paid copyright royalties for the exploitation of their music as is done in every country in the world. He said it is only in a country like Nigeria that this can take place with some people having no regards for intellectual property. “The threat by the leadership of BON reveals the crass ignorance with which some members of BON have been misled and steered into easily avoidable crisis. For many years, this people have used ‘divide and rule’ tactics and threats to weaken the music industry and ensure that the industry did not effectively challenge its exploitation,” Okoroji said.

He stated that it is indeed revealing that IBAN/BON people who pretend to be leaders of the broadcast industry in Nigeria believe that they can play music belonging to foreign nationals for free in Nigeria without any consequence. “For their information, by the reciprocal representation agreements entered into between COSON and several collective management organisations around the world and the various copyright conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory, every broadcast station in Nigeria is bound to pay copyright royalties for foreign music as it must for the music belonging to Nigerians.
Failure to pay exposes Nigeria to both economic and diplomatic sanctions,” Okoroji disclosed. He added that COSON has done everything to engage broadcasting stations in Nigeria to do what is done in every other country in a very professional manner. “COSON has met with Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria (IBAN), National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and practically every major broadcasting network in Nigeria. While there are broadcasting stations that have reached agreements with COSON and are broadcasting music comfortably as required by law, some other stations have allowed themselves to be deceived by the empty boast of people who have told them that they can ‘handle’ COSON,” Okoroji added.
But IBAN and BON also said their members are ready and willing to pay royalties for works used but will not be railroaded into arbitrarily imposed and concocted fees which are not based on any agreeable and verifiable tariff and standards. “In the circumstance, we are therefore taking steps in liaison with important stakeholders in the country to address and hopefully come to a fair and reasonable resolution of this COSON induced crises,” IBAN/BON stated. Other artistes who have their musical productions prohibited on air include Iyanya, Azizat, D’Banj, Olamide, Dr. SID, Sammy Okposo, Olu Maintain, Sunny Neji, Rugged Man, Jasman Olofin, X-Project, Asa, African China, Terry G, Waje, Omawumi, Sound Sultan and J Martins.

learnt Prince Emeka Mba, Director General, National Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, has waded in. The NBC boss is said to have called for a negotiated settlement, wondering how the stations can do away with works of the affected artistes who are the best in Nigeria and still meet up with requirement of NBC.

EducationASUU To Members: Remain Resolute by Myself21(op): 5:39am On Dec 04, 2013
The Federal Government shifted yesterday its ultimatum for the reopening of universities till Monday.
The deadline of its resume-or-be-sacked-directive to striking teachers would have been today.
Supervising Minister of Education Nyesom Wike, who gave the much criticised directive, announced the shift of date.
He said since the family of the late Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) ex-President Prof. Festus Iyayi informed the ministry of funeral rites for weekend, the resumption date had to be shifted to enable the government participate in the ceremony.
Wike said: “The decision to shift the date of the compulsory resumption of federal universities for academic activities is now Monday, December 9. This decision has been taken as a result of the respect we have for the former ASUU President.”
He said the Federal Government took the decision to re-open the universities in the interest of Nigerians and not to engage in a showdown with ASUU.
Wike said Nigerians should appreciate that the pro-chancellors and chairmen of the federal universities Governing Councils took the decision to re-open the schools, pointing out that the Federal Government’s directive was to the vice chancellors who are expected to comply with the decision of the pro-chancellors.
The Minister said the Federal Government had already opened a dedicated account for the revival of infrastructure in the universities.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, has signed the resolution that the Federal Government will commit N1.3trillion into the revival of infrastructure in the universities, he said, adding that the advertisement of internal and external vacancies is part of the process to address the shortage of manpower in the nation’s universities.
According to Wike, the Federal Government has implemented over 80per cent of the issues contained in the 2009 agreement, with only the payment of earned allowances and revitalisation of infrastructure pending.
“The Federal Government appreciates the need to revive infrastructure in our universities and other tertiary institutions, hence the government has put in place the process to effectively address the challenges identified by the NEEDS Assessment report voluntarily initiated by President Goodluck Jonathan,” the minister said.
National Universities Commission (NUC) Executive Secretary Prof. Julius Okojie is displeased that ASUU members are yet to call off the strike.
He said the deadline was not a threat but a call to go back to work.
But ASUU restated its rejection of the ultimatum, issuing yesterday a 14-point guideline to its members on why they must sustain the strike.
It also said no external force was behind its action and spurned sack threats because, according to ASUU, such a measure is against the Labour Act and the International Labour Organisation’s Convention.
The union made its position known in Strike Bulletin No. 14, signed by ASUU National President Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge.
ASUU said: “Our union, as you know, derives its strength from members. Government fallacy of ‘external forces’ behind our union only betrays its desperation to distract our genuine cause. You know better!
“Do not believe in the falsehood being peddled by certain persons as regards some fictitious ratio of branches that voted for suspension of strike.
“ASUU operates strong internal democracy and is capable of taking critical decisions on matters of concern to the Union. Your Union will always do your bidding.
“Our struggle is on course; the threat of sack for failure to sign resumption of duty register is part of the oppression that failed in the past. It will fail again.”
The union came up with 14 guidelines signaling that it is prepared for a long drawn battle with the Federal Government.
The guidelines read in part:
•Do not sign any resumption of duty. Government is out to humiliate us. Hold your head high. This too shall pass!!!
•If you receive any query on account of the ongoing strike, failure to sign resumption of duty register, etc, bring such to the attention of the branch chairperson immediately for guidance.
•It is a general knowledge that members of ASUU are on a national strike. It is against the Labour Act and the ILO convention to sack anybody on account of participation in a strike, no matter how remotely related.
•Remain resolute and refrain from violating the ongoing strike. Our Union is capable of protecting its members.
•Meanwhile, be security conscious. Do not visit security agencies alone. In case of difficulties, always consult your Chairperson.
•With our collective resolve, we can again brush off this unwarranted and provocative onslaught. Stand to be counted on the positive side of history. Do not betray your union.
The leadership of ASUU also justified its struggle and insisted that it is in the public interest.
It said: “Our collective national struggle to save the future of public system has entered yet another critical phase. The National Strike Coordinating Committee(NSCC) commends all members for their steadfastness and commitment to this patriotic cause.
“When we commenced the strike, we were clear as to the possible antics of Government, such as attack on our Union, stoppage of salaries, harassment through security agencies, opening of resumption of duty registers, sacking , etc, all aimed at breaking our resolve
“For five months, we have weathered the storm of persecution, oppression, media attack, manipulation of public opinion by government and its agent against our cause, stoppage of salaries, etc. With our sacrifice and dogged determination, we have remained standing.
“In our interactions with government, we craved for better funding, but arrived at a resolution upon which it offered to begin the process of revitalising the Universities by making available N200bn in 2013 and follow with a release of N220bn annually for another five years.
“Our congresses considered the offer by Government and resolved that the strike be suspended after incorporating the ‘non victimisation clause’, ‘the commencement of renegotiation of FGN/ASUU Agreement by 2014’ and the endorsement of the new MoU by representatives of Government and ASUU with NLC President as witness. We have not made a fresh demand.
“For a Government that recently raised question on the validity of its own document (MoU) even when it was signed by the Permanent Secretary for the Minister of Education, have we done anything wrong by insisting that the MoU be duly endorsed?”
Lecturers of the states and Federal universities in the Southwest said they remained resolute.
They described as “primitive and derogatory”, the threat of the Federal government to sack them, should they fail to return to the class, saying a government that could hurry to inject over two trillion naira into ailing banks that are privately owned should not find it difficult to infuse N200bn into public universities across the country.
Addressing reporters on the main campus of the Olabisi Onabanjo University(OOU), Ago – Iwoye, Ogun State, the local ASUU chair, Dr Adesola Nassir, said the Ibadan Zone of ASUU comprising University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Lagos State University, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, would sustain the strike.
Nassir said: “Not Nyesom Wike, Doyin Okupe, Julius Okojie was given the mandate to manage the affairs of this country, education sector inclusive.”
Nassir said: “We just want Nigerians to know that ASUU is not going to be cowed. We are very strict as to the reason why we embarked on strike, we want our universities to be repositioned so that they can churn out the type of graduates that would fit into roles that will power the development of this country.
“We cannot continue to be accomplices in the process of producing the half-baked graduates, as we have been accused of.
“Our position is very clear: the Federal government said it was going to infuse N200bn into the universities in 2010, we are barely three or a little over that today in 2013 and our union is saying, government must live by what it has said it would do.
