Canada is extending restrictions on non-US international travel until February 21, 2021. The month-long travel restrictions extension was announced by federal Public Safety Minister Bill Blair today. “Our Government will never hesitate to take the strong action needed to keep Canadians safe from COVID-19 while maintaining essential trade with our international partners,” Blair wrote in a tweet. Blair had also announced last week that the restrictions imposed on U.S. travellers will be valid until at least February 21. The Canada-U.S. border has been closed since March to non-essential travel and this joint decision by Washington and Ottawa has been extended several times. To protect Canadians from COVID-19, the federal government has also had international travel restriction measures in place since March to limit travel to Canada. The restrictions prohibit most non-essential or discretionary travel to the country. Canadian citizens and residents may, however, return to Canada and welcome immediate and extended family members among a number of other exemptions. Since January 7, 2021, Canada requires every international air traveller aged five years or older to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test done within 72 hours of the traveller’s planned departure for Canada. This negative PCR test is required before a person is allowed to board any flight bound for Canada. Transport Canada announced the pre-departure testing requirements on December 31. The pre-departure test requirements do not exempt travellers from having to complete a 14-day quarantine period. A quarantine plan must be prepared prior to arrival in Canada to specify where and how it will be carried out. Travellers to Canada must also use the ArriveCAN app to send their information to Canadian border services officers and learn how to comply with coronavirus measures at the border. The application is to be used by all incoming travellers to conduct daily self-assessments and share contact tracing information so it can be shared with the provinces and territories to ensure that the quarantine process is completed. Quarantine is enforced in Canada and those who break it may be subject to fines and imprisonment. In recent days, the Canada Border Services Agency and government officials have suggested that restrictions and controls on travellers could be tightened. Quebec Premier François Legault also called on the federal government on Tuesday to ban non-essential international flights during a briefing on the coronavirus. Recent outbreaks of new variants of the virus and the resurgence of cases in several countries around the world contribute to these concerns. Additional control rules could include further screening measures or changes to border control procedures. The number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise in many parts of Canada, with a total of over 723,920 cases reported on January 20. Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec are seeing glimmers of hope in efforts to curb the spread of the infection, although authorities in these provinces believe it is still too early to consider easing existing restrictions. A support group for the reelection of President Muhammadu Buhari, Buhari/Osibanjo Mandate Group, BOMG, Wednesday said there is no love lost between the president and Igbo people. This was disclosed by South East coordinator of the group, Chief Chukwudi Ezenyi while speaking with newsmen at the zonal office of the group in Nnewi, Anambra State. He said that “the rate at which the present administration of President Buhari is attending to infrastructures in Igboland shows that the president is not by any means an enemy of Ndigbo but a friend.” Chief Ezenyi flanked by his executive council said the Onitsha-Enugu-PortHacourt road became a death trap for the sixteen years that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was in control of the nation. “The second Niger Bridge has become issue for electioneering campaign for every succeeding administration before the advent of the government of President Buhari who has committed so much resources to the bridge which would give a respite to travelers in Igboland. “President Buhari has done so well not minding that his performance is not being showcased because of his style of not making noise about what he is doing. “The war against corruption is a successful one, before he came on board, corruption has been institutionalized, but Buhari has many opportunities to illegally enrich himself but decided to stay clean. “The opponents of President Buhari always accuse him that the corruption war is one-sided but I always reply them that it is better to start the war somewhere if not Nigeria would collapse.” Chief Ezenyi pointed out that the mandate of his group is to showcase the achievements of President Buhari and his government in the South East and by so doing educate the Igbo on the need to be wise politically. He expressed optimism that the less than five percent votes recorded by Buhari in the last presidential election will improve to nothing less than forty percent by the time the group is through with it assignment. The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has asked Nigerians to appreciate the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari and re-elect him in the 2019 polls. He said aside from strides in the agricultural sector, Buhari had built foundation for growth and safety nets for the masses. Tinubu said voting for the All Progressives Congress would move the country forward. The former Lagos governor, who spoke in his New Year message, urged Nigerians to perform their civic duties by voting with the best interest of the country at heart. He said, “The nation is on the verge of an election to determine our collective fate, we can either choose to continue forward or return to the old ways that held us back for so long. Just as 2018 must turn into 2019, we must also continue to move forward. “Let us recognise that which has been done this past year. President Buhari has built a foundation for sustainable growth and development, a path for a better future. President Buhari has brought transparency and accountability to the government business. “The Buhari administration… has trained people that they may acquire a livelihood. It has empowered those who wish to start businesses and employ others. It has helped farmers become more productive so that they may earn more money while better feeding the nation.” Source: http://www.nigerianeye.com/2019/01/buhari-has-built-foundation-for-growth.html

The Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, on Monday night held what the government called an extraordinary security meeting to discuss the worsening security situation in the state. At the meeting, the governor admitted that the security situation in the troubled state was getting worse of recent. He, however, said he could not blame President Muhammadu Buhari for the situation unlike how he blamed ex-President Goodluck Jonathan. The meeting was convened by the state government on the heels of recent coordinated attacks and capture of territories, including military formations, by Boko Haram insurgents. Though the military has repeatedly denied claims that communities and soldiers have been dislodged by the rampaging Boko Haram insurgents, people in their hundreds have, since last week, been fleeing their homes into Maiduguri, the state capital. The influx of men, women and children into Maiduguri, as well as reports of many dying on the way, have triggered tension in the state with concerns among citizens calling for drastic action to be taken by the government. It was based on this that Mr Shettima convened the Monday night security meeting that involved almost all sectors, including security agencies, the media and legal practitioners. Mr Shettima delivered a lengthy remark at the opening of the meeting that held at the multipurpose hall of Government House, Maiduguri, detailing why the security meeting was expedient. He specifically admonished the attendees not to engage in blame games over the perceived failure of the soldiers which he said would be unfair giving the enormous sacrifices they have made in the last seven years. He also explained why he refused to condemn President Muhammadu Buhari’s handling of the Boko Haram crisis. “…unlike in previous years when I was treated as an enemy of the Presidency, I have from 2015 to date, gained unfettered access to the President,” Mr Shettima said. The late night security meeting was the first of its kind that had representatives of many groups and associations including traditional rulers. After the initial remarks by the governor, journalists were told to leave the meeting and not to expect a communique. The other attendees went into a closed-door session to deliberate and fashion out counter strategies of tackling the Boko Haram resurgence. Read Mr Shettima’s full speech below: “Your royal highnesses and our elders, I will like to start by saying that the aim of convening this important meeting is not to pass blames or to pass any kind of verdict on our security agencies. “I think the most inhuman way to go is to gather and condemn those who are putting their lives on the line and giving their lives in efforts to find peace. “We are principally here as a family, as a people all affected by the situation in Borno State, to discuss suggestions that will hopefully contribute to combined ongoing efforts towards addressing the problem. “For seven years, we held our regular security council meetings. I from to time consult with some of the participants here. However, I never for once convene an extraordinary meeting of this nature because, frankly speaking, I was avoiding a sort of dramatisation or being sensational about our challenges in Borno State. “Without being insensitive to the realities of our situation, I feel deeply pained whenever Borno is being discussed on the basis of helpless weakness. I prefer to assume a position of strength; a position of normalcy and a character of being incurably optimistic. It was in these regards that we created a full-fledged Ministry of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement and deployed enormous public resources to rebuild more than 30,000 homes of citizens, hospitals, water installations, local government secretariats, schools and palaces of traditional rulers. “It was with the same mind that we kept on pushing for voluntary and dignified return of displaced citizens to safe and rebuilt communities. “My greatest wish was and still is, not to bequeath Boko Haram challenges and IDP Camps to my successor. We wanted to, and still want to get Borno fully back to normal days. Sometimes, I unconsciously find myself boasting that Borno is safer than Lagos. I simply feel very bad to sound pessimistic about Borno. I so much believe in optimism. “Of course, I know that in governance, responding to some situations demand a combination of being both optimistic and realistic. “The realities, Your Royal Highnesses, invited participants, is that while so much was achieved by our gallant military men and women, we are today faced with serious challenges in Borno State. But then, these challenges should strengthen our abiding faith and resolve to continually do whatever we can, in support of our military, the police, the DSS, our Civilian JTF, all para-military agencies and political authorities at the federal level, to end the Boko Haram insurgency. “I have met the President a number of times, including few weeks ago. I have led our national assembly members to the president and in all our discussions, we all saw on the face, in words and actions of the President, absolute sincerity in terms of his deep concern, his empathy and his compassion towards our plight in the northeast, particularly in Borno. “President Muhammadu Buhari is without the slightest doubt, devoted to the fight against Boko Haram. I believe that service chiefs, the IGP, the DG of DSS and heads of all para-military agencies share the commitment of Mr President. “Most importantly, troops in the front lines, have with their own lives, proved their commitment in the service of our country and in obedience to the President, Commander In Chief. The President has mobilised world leaders in support of Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram. He has fostered regional cooperation and he supports troops. “Some persons have asked why I have not criticised the Buhari government or the Nigerian military over situations in Borno. My response to them is that unlike in previous years when I was treated as an enemy of the Presidency, I have from 2015 to date, gained unfettered access to the President. I see the Commander-In-Chief at the shortest request and I tell him my concerns, he listens to me with keen interest and in most cases, he takes measures. I have not had reason to be frustrated with the Presidency, unlike previous years. “Let me say that even under the previous administration, I regularly supported and defended the military. When I said in February 2014, that the military was not being well equipped, it was not a comment by design, it was a spontaneous reaction which came out of frustration and it was in defence of the soldiers being killed in front lines. I knew the problems. Some people have said I was later vindicated. Nigerians can bear witness that from 2011 to date, I prefer to speak from a position of strength rather than a position of hopelessness. “I prefer to inspire our military and citizens. I prefer to make security matters as discrete as possible. There were times I managed to see the former President but our meetings were always under rush. There were times I resorted to writing him for the record. I remember one specific instance I wrote a strong letter in 2013, over serious concerns raised by the Nigerian Air Force command in Borno State, and I have to admit that President Jonathan took immediate measures on that. “As a state government, we have done and will continue to do everything humanly possible in support of the fight against Boko Haram. We have given very serious financial, moral and political support to the counter-insurgency. All security agencies and the federal government (including the previous Jonathan administration) have strongly acknowledged the role of the Civilian JTF in the successes recorded by the military. “From 2013 to date, Borno State Government has been solely responsible for funding the Civilian JTF in terms of their training, their allowances, deployment, operational vehicles and their kits. We will continue to support the Civilian JTF, our military, the police and all other security agencies. We have secretly been engaging hunters in some areas without making noise. We believe security of lives is what makes government legitimate. “Your royal highnesses, invited participants, everyone here has been playing one or more roles in the fight against Boko Haram. This fight is a collective one that affects all of us. We all have stakes in the peace and stability of Borno and this is why we chose to hold an extraordinary security meeting with carefully chosen participants. There are many important stakeholders that were not invited and it is not because they do not matter but because we wanted to minimize our number. We deliberately did not invite persons on individual basis in order to prevent perceptions or feelings of alienation. Even as this gathering is constituted, it is too large from a security point of view. Nevertheless, we are at a point in which we needed to convene a meeting of this nature so as to form a broader and more inclusive platform to listen to each other, to hopefully generate some new ideas. “To chart a new course and to also rebuild public confidence. Leadership requires building and nurturing the hopes of citizens. Times like ours require all of us raising the hopes of citizens, but these hopes should not be blind ones. They should be based on the measures we take. “Their Royal Highnesses are permanent leaders and custodians of our communities. We politicians come and go, royal fathers do not have tenure of office. Our elders here are the conscience of our communities. They stood for Borno when it was impossible to move freely in our state capital. “Our national and state assembly members are representatives of our people. I do not think it is wise to see security as purely an executive thing. I believe in productive and strategic cooperation. We all need ourselves to move faster. The legislature is sometimes the most authoritative in relating with organs of the Federal Government. “All the groups we invited have roles to play. We need the buy-in and ideas of the NLC, whose members have been victims in different places attacked. We need the NBA whose lawyers deal with issues of public rights including being defendants of suspects under prosecution and who should guide us. We need our retired military elders in the Nigerian Legion whose experiences of yesterday can be a benefit to this gathering. We invited journalists. We need the NUJ leadership to as stakeholders, help us manage information in ways that will help the state and not destabilize it. “I have in the course of work realized that the best way to relate with journalists is to sometimes take them into confidence. We invited unions of transport and road workers whose hundreds of members move around the state and have come across different security situations. They see so much on the roads. We invited representatives of our tertiary institutions, religious leaders and management of markets for us to think ahead of insurgents. Knowing the Boko Haram, they may send our minds to the north while planning to head the south. “We need to strengthen security measures in schools, mosques and churches, markets and all public places across Borno State. We should not be taken unawares. We invited the council on women societies because women and our children constitute the largest number of traumatized and displaced victims of the Boko Haram insurgency. They bear the brunt. “Your royal highnesses, elders, national and state assembly members, heads of security establishments, members of the state executive council, chairmen, representatives of various groups, I will like to appeal to all of us that our meeting should not be driven by emotions. We should speak with logic. We should see all of here as stakeholders with genuine interest in the peace and security of Borno. We should speak with mutual respect and with trust in the sincerity of each other. Our focus should largely be about finding solutions. We all know the situation of things. Let us as a family with equal stakes, suggest solutions that will insha’Allah, contribute to addressing our problems. “I wish us a meaningful meeting and not a tea party. I will at this point thank and request our friends in the media to allow us hold a closed-door meeting. I will like to say also that we are not issuing a communique. Whatever we resolve will be transmitted to the President, Commander In Chief in writing and not for public consumption.” Source: http://www.nigerianeye.com/2019/01/boko-haram-why-i-havent-criticised.html

Host communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas, HOSCON, has lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for supporting call for the 13 percent derivation fund to go to oil bearing communities in the Niger Delta region. The body at the end of a meeting in Warri, Delta State also passed a vote of confidence on the President for the resolve, adding that it will speed up development of oil communities. Spokesman of the group, Mr Monday Whiskey also enjoined President Buhari to consider HOSCON security company in the pipeline surveillance job in the region. “That the meeting resolved that President Buhari’s intention to ensure that 13 per cent derivation fund is made available to the people of the oil/gas bearing constituents is one of the most outstanding decisions that this government had taken as it affects the socio-economic and infrastructural transformation of the long neglected and environmentally improvised oil bearing region of the country. “The meeting appealed to President Buhari to ensure that HOSCON security company was giving adequate recognition in the proposed community pipeline policing initiative, as HOSCON promised to use her good will and grassroots contact to ensure adequate and effective policing of the vast pipelines within our communities,” he said. Mr Chermberline Adiaso, the South East Coordinator of the Presidential Support Committee (PSC) says the South East and South South would join forces by voting massively for re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. He said this in a statement issued to newsmen on Monday in Umuahia. Adiaso, who is also the PSC Chairman, noted that the impressive turnout of supporters at the start of the Presidential Campaign in Uyo, in Akwa Ibom, was a sign that Buhari would win in the two zones. The chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Abia said that the president had done well in the two areas to guarantee his re-election. “Some of Buhari’s achievements in the South East include the implementation of the Home Grown School Feeding Programme (HGSFP) in all the five states, whereas there was random selection of states in other geo-political zones,” he said. Adiaso maintained that the second Niger Bridge project and the Enugu-Port Harcourt dual carriageway reconstruction as well as rehabilitation in Aba are part of the footprints of Buhari in the South East. He further said that the investment of 5 million dollars in the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, to establish modern diagnostic centres, were among the laudable achievements of Buhari’s administration in the zone. The coordinator therefore assured that he and his campaign team would work tirelessly to ensure a landslide victory for Buhari and APC in South East in 2019. Adiaso also called for total support for the Uche Ogah/ Martins Azubuike governorship candidacy in Abia under the APC platform. He stressed that the state was in dire need of progressive change to bring smiles to the faces of the people once more. Alhaji Bala Shagari, eldest son of late President Shehu Shagari has expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari over his condolence visit to the family in Sokoto State, even as he noted that his father told them that he had pardoned everybody before his death. According to him, his father had no grudge against Buhari or anyone because Shagari “told us he had pardoned everyone.” The eldest son told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, yesterday, in Sokoto, Sokoto State, that the family was happy with the visit and Buhari’s pledge to immortalize the late president. Bala, who is the District Head of Shagari town in Sokoto, however, said he would not comment on Buhari’s pledge until it was fulfilled. Late Shagari, aged 93, died on December 28 at the National Hospital, Abuja and was buried on Saturday at Shagari, his home town. Shagari was President of Nigeria from 1979 to 1983. He was dethroned by a coup d’etat that brought in Buhari to power as military Head of State, three months after he (Shagari) was sworn in for a second term. He said the late president did not leave any will beside the directive that he should be buried at his home town, Shagari. According to Bala, the directive was strictly observed and implemented as his remains were buried at Shagari town, on Saturday. He acknowledged that the Sultan had offered that the late president should be buried at Hubbare, where Shehu Usman Dan Fodio was laid to rest. “We acknowledged it but late Shagari had told us that he should be buried in Shagari town and even indicated a specific location, so we have to comply with his will,” he added. He explained that the late president’s absence at functions was due to his ill-health, saying that was the reason he stayed in Sokoto and Shagari town before he died. Earlier, President Buhari condoled with the wives and children of late Shagari at the deceased’s residence on Sama Road in Sokoto. During the visit, Prof. Shehu Galadanci led the prayers for late Shagari. He also prayed to God to change the mindset of those spreading hate and disunity among citizens as well as those individuals or organisations working against the laudable and pro-human policies and programmes of the Buhari administration. Buhari was accompanied by Governors Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko and Sokoto State Deputy Governor Alhaji Mannir Dan-Iya, among others. The visit was cheered by crowds chanting; “Nigeria Sai Maigaskiya” meaning Nigeria is for a truthful person. The Federal Government’s delegation led by Secretary to the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, had earlier attended the late president’s funeral on Saturday in Shagari town. The deceased, who held the traditional title of Turakin Sokoto, was born on February 25, 1925 in Shagari, in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto state. After his early education, he worked as a teacher briefly before he became politician in 1951. In 1954, he was elected to the Federal House of Representatives. He served seven times as a federal minister and federal commissioner from 1958–1975, before he was elected president in 1979. Hours after naming Africa’s richest man on the ‘special advisory committee’ to President Muhammadu for his re-election, the presidency has clarified that the businessman is not actually a member of the campaign team. It was reported how Mr Dangote was named among seven members of the advisory committee in a list provided by Mr Buhari’s spokesperson, Femi Adesina. Another businessman, Femi Otedola, was also on the list; while the other five were politicians. The other five are Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; APC national leader; Bola Tinubu; Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan; House of Representatives Leader Femi Gbajabiamila; and the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole. The advisory committee was one of the committees listed in the APC ‘Presidential Campaign Council.’ The naming of the two businessmen was condemned by many Nigerians including the main opposition party, PDP. In another statement on Friday night, however, Mr Adesina explained the status of Mr Dangote. “It has become imperative to further clarify the status of Alhaji Aliko Dangote, named under the sub-head ADVISORY MEMBERS in the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council announced on Friday, December 28, 2018. “Africa’s richest man, not being a card-carrying member of APC, cannot, and is not member of the PCC. He is also a member of the Peace Committee, and thus cannot be in a partisan campaign council,” Mr Adesina said. The spokesperson did not explain why the advisory committee was listed as part of the PCC or whether his exemption of Mr Dangote also applies to the other six members of the advisory committee. President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the news of the passing away of the First Executive President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari. President Buhari’s condolence message is contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Friday. The President said: “On behalf of my family, the government and the people of Nigeria, it is with immense sadness that I received the news of the passing away of the First Executive President of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari which event happened on Friday in Abuja.” He described the death as the departure of a patriot whose life of service and humility was widely acknowledged. President Buhari recalled part of the birthday message he (Buhari) sent to him last February when he said, “ we are enthralled and regaled with the many years of unequalled patriotism, sacrifices and contributions to national development. “More specifically, we celebrate the role modelling qualities of integrity, diligence and humility that have been the hallmark of your visionary leadership.” The President was grateful to God that Shagari lived to a ripe age and led an exemplary life, which he urged Nigerians of all walks of life to emulate. “Nigerians held him in the highest esteem even when he was out of office until his demise and will forever miss his wise counsels,’’ he added. He prayed that Almighty God would comfort the family of the ex-president and all those who mourned him and will grant the soul of the former president eternal rest. The remains of the former president, who died at the age of 93 on Friday at the National Hospital Abuja, would be transported to Sokoto for burial on Saturday according to Islamic rites. Retired Maj.-Gen. Oluyemi Bajowa says President Muhammadu Buhari is the most suitable Presidential candidate that can successfully eradicate corruption in Nigeria. Bajowa made this known on his twitter handle on Friday on the occasion of his 78th birthday message to Nigerians. “We will need President Buhari once again for he has acquitted himself well in his fight against corruption. “He is no doubt putting a check on the Boko Haram insurgency and his social investment package for Nigerian youths is second to none,’’ he said. Bajowa, who is the Agunmolu of Ikale Land in Ondo State, urged the electorate not to throw away their votes by voting for political mercenaries and politicians who would mortgage their future through corrupt tendencies. He noted that Buhari had a dependable antecedent of untainted integrity, unalloyed honesty and altruistic passion for the Nigerian project. Bajowa noted that he had worked with Buhari as a military officer, noting that he could vouch for his integrity. “I worked with him for four years when I served as the Adjutant-General of the Nigerian Army, so I know him very well. I equally know all the Generals as a result of my position as the former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence. “Also, as former Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry and former Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, I can tell you that Buhari has integrity. “He has honesty and he is a person who is sincerely passionate about the unity, progress and economic revival of Nigeria,’’ the retired army general said. He advised Nigerians to shun the candidature of a person once termed “corruption personified’’ by a former president that could not in any way be compared to Buhari in terms of untainted integrity. Bajowa, who is the convener of Legacy Forum, a platform for the actualisation of Muhammadu Buhari’s second term, said that he and eminent Nigerians of like minds would work toward ensuring the overwhelming victory of President Buhari in the 2019 elections. The retired army general implored Nigerians to be steadfast in their prayers for the nation, saying that “we all should see Nigeria as a big project that must neither falter nor fail’’. The Spokesperson for President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organisation, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has challenged the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to come out with proof of corruption against President Muhammadu Buhari, if they have any. He said Nigerians, especially the media, must always demand evidence of any accusation levelled against the ruling All Progressives Congress before the opposition party could be taken seriously. Keyamo said this in response to an allegation by Atiku through his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr Phrank Shaibu, that members of the President’s family now own substantial shares in Etisalat Nigeria, which has an estimated $2bn (about N727bn at N360 per dollar) of its estimated $20bn global net worth. Atiku while citing a report also claimed that the first family had acquired mouth-watering shares in Keystone Bank with total assets of $1.916bn (equivalent of N307.5bn) and purchased about N3bn worth of shares in the new Pakistani Islamic Bank. Saying that Atiku and the PDP deserved no attention, Keyamo urged Nigerians to demand proof from them whenever “they make their spurious and wild allegations” before they could listen to them. “Before Nigerians can listen to them, they (PDP and Atiku) must show some modicum of proof before we can respond; otherwise they will wake up every morning and start making wild, fictitious accusations. These are useless and stupid allegations they have been churning out to show they are clueless,” he said. Atiku had also stated that the reported N1.7bn donated by Nigerian farmers to the campaign of President Buhari contravened Section 91 (9) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), which says, “no individual or other entity shall donate more than N1m to an aspirant or a candidate.” He added that Section 91 (2) of the Electoral Act further stated that a presidential candidate could only spend a maximum of N1bn. But Keyamo argued that the law did not stop people from donating beyond the spending limit. “The law only says N1bn is your spending limit, it didn’t say people cannot donate more. When you receive more you can veer them into other things like charity or party activities other than campaigning,” he said. However, the PDP on Thursday challenged President Buhari to explain to Nigerians how his family members got N1.032tn they allegedly invested for the acquisition of Etisalat Nigeria and Keystone Bank Plc. The party urged Buhari to jettison the thought of going ahead with his re-election campaign without clearing the issue. It stated that the matter directly bordered on his integrity both as a person and the exalted office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, during a media briefing in Abuja, also said Nigerians were not interested in mere rhetoric or attempts by the Buhari Presidency to divert public attention from the issue at hand. He stated that the PDP demanded that Buhari, who prides himself as Mr Integrity, addressed the issues in person. He alleged that Buhari’s refusal to personally address the matter meant consent. Ologbondiyan said, “The PDP Presidential Campaign challenges President Buhari to explain how his family members came about the sum of N1.032tn for this scandalous acquisition. “This is not an issue for Buhari’s aides to howl about in the media; it touches directly on his person, particularly his perception as a symbol of the talakawas. He must therefore address them. “It is a norm that he who comes to equity must come with clean hands. President Buhari and his family members have entangled themselves in corruption. Mr President’s hands can no longer be said to be clean until he proves otherwise.” He added, “The PDP PCO wants Nigerians and the whole world to note that President Buhari’s refusal to personally address this matter means consent. “We, therefore, dare President Buhari to put forth a denial on this disclosure by our candidate and we will spare no thoughts in furnishing the public with details of his corrupt activities within and outside Nigeria. “Nigerians will also recall how the Buhari Presidency muted the case of the aide of the First Lady, Mr Baba-Inna, who was arrested in September this year over accusation of receiving N2.5bn from politicians, businessmen and women on behalf of the First Lady.” He urged Nigerians to recall how the Buhari Presidency allegedly covered up the confession of one Amina Mohammed, paraded by the Department of State Services. Ahead of the 2019 general elections, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, has declared its support for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari. The endorsement which came during the Association’s 5th General Meeting held in Abuja on Thursday had in attendance over 2000 of its members from different parts of the country. National President, MACBAN, Alhaji Muhammadu Kirowa, said the association’s decision to support the President was because ” no administration had looked into our plight the way President Buhari has done since the inception of the association.” Kirowa stated that the President had made significant efforts towards reviving grazing reserves across the country, thereby impacting directly the lives of MACBAN members. He said, “We appreciate government’s programmes aimed at transforming the social lives of Nigerians through empowerments, agricultural development particularly the livestock sub-sector where pilot programmes of developing water and pasture in long-neglected grazing reserves have commenced.” Speaking earlier, the National Secretary, MACBAN, Alhaji Baba Ngelzarma, who pledged the association’s continuous loyalty and support for the President, appealed to members of the association to be law-abiding, avoid friction and utterances that were capable of causing chaos in the country. He also appealed to the media to avoid labelling herdsmen as ‘killers and unwanted citizens.’ Ngelzarma noted, “MACBAN frowns on the sensational and negative stereotyping of herders, who are doing legitimate economic activity that contributes to the gross domestic product of the country and are ensuring food security. “We represent over 20 million members across the country, here in attendance we have over 2000 people who have come from all corners of the country; We have representatives from each local governments, and you heard their views; They have declared their interest in President Muhammadu Buhari.” “This is the decision of the majority, we as leaders, don’t have any option than to follow,” he added.
