Jobs/VacanciesRe: NLNG Recruitment 2025/2026 by Nabzi6: 2:56pm On Apr 03
I have wanted to ask this but always get carried away, this is I think the 5th time you mentioned this "we sell gas" vagueness, I wonder what your response will be when someone presses you further with questions. People can be really clever when they want to extract information from you.

airsaylongcome:
PH is “rough”. NLNG staff are “sweet target” if you know what I’m talking about. If you get k/napped it will get to the company. They will do their best to get you released. No one wants all of that drama. So everyone maintains a low profile. Apart from close family, anyone that asked, I told them “We sell gas in my company”. I wasn’t lying per se, but I was intentionally being vague. Many people thought it was LPG aka cooking gas. And I was fine with them thinking that

Thanks,Na to go find suit be that oo, btw do you know a place I can get nice and affordable suits or someone that sews one in Abuja?

airsaylongcome:
I’m sure you can wear a kaftan. But why though? In these kinds of things, I try to avoid “standing out” unnecessarily. The Assessors are very well trained and are often objective, but dem nor dey know finish. You never know who will subconsciously think “what is this one feeling like sef” and boom you already created a perception for yourself. Stand out while blending in. Subtlety is a nice thing. You don’t want fellow candidates profiling you as well, adding to the pressure of the AC. If you need a confidence boost, knot your tie in a stylish way.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: NLNG Recruitment 2025/2026 by Nabzi6: 9:50pm On Feb 19
Thanks, I appreciate your response

Nimora:
Honestly, that’s a good question. You could try to look a bit more corporate, even though I know it can be a bit tricky for some of us Muslims. During the NNPC interview, I saw a few guys wear jeans with a long sleeve shirt (like a pocket shirt) and then pair it with nice corporate shoes. It still looked neat and presentable.

SUIT IS DEFINITELY NOT the only acceptable dress code. Just aim for business formal or very neat business smart.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: NLNG Recruitment 2025/2026 by Nabzi6: 6:28pm On Feb 19
I actually meant kaftan, but from your response it seems suit is the only acceptable dress code.

airsaylongcome:
Really? You want to wear Agbada or tie wrapper for an interview?
Jobs/VacanciesRe: NLNG Recruitment 2025/2026 by Nabzi6: 3:34pm On Feb 19
Please what about the dressing code, do people also arrive there in their natives?

airsaylongcome:
they are more business related I’d say. So our case study for example was about a contact centre and the challenges and opportunities for improvement for their operations

MODAY1Ali:
The truth of the matter is every resource you need to become a world class software engineer / computer scientist is available for free online. From my experience, the major challenges most people face are:
1. Discipline. Extensive learning as an activity is hard. Learning a technical skill is even harder. No matter the initial ginger/excitement you have in the beginning, there’ll be days where you won’t want to push on. It’s specifically on those days you need to go the extra mile.
2. Knowing where to look and knowing the right combination of resources to use. To be very honest , this one is individual. Different people learn differently. You have to figure out what works for you.
3. Learning the right sequence of things. For example, I wouldn’t recommend jumping into learning C from the jump. Start with a higher level language (python is perfect).
4. Learning how to learn. This may sound paradoxical at first but learning itself is a skill that you can hone and get better at.
5. Knowing what to learn. I myself am not an expert but I can’t help you here.

Here are some core concepts you should learn and understand on an intuitive level and not just surface level:
1. What code/coding specifically is and its difference with program/programming.
2. What programming languages are, capabilities, limitations etc.
3. Core programming concepts like conditional branching, looping, recursion, abstraction etc.

Here are some resources I found useful in my journey:
YOUTUBE
1. Bro codes tutorials on youtube.
2. Crash course computing.
BOOKS
1. Code by Charles Petzold.
2. But how do it know? by J. Clark Scott.
3. Nand2tetris by Noam Nisan and Shimon Schocken.
4. Crash course python by Eric Mathes.
5. Head First Java by Kathy Sierra.

Download python ide from the python official website. Likewise, download jre and then download intellij, eclipse, or netbeans for java. VsCode is also useful.

Start here. By the time you get through these resources, you’ll know enough about the field to chart your own course (and learn about other topics like web development i.e. html/css/javascript, databases i.e. mysql/postgresql plus other topics). After a couple years, preferably with some experience, go for a PGD and then masters as they are the key that will unlock access to senior/management roles.

Also an important tip. As a civil engineer, I’m sure you’re already used to building structures (using designs, models etc). Software is no different, you’re building a structure but this time virtual (also with designs, models etc). Leverage your knowledge of civil engineering to build useful analogies in your software journey when applicable.

WARNING: Few people can learn enough to be employable in under a year. For most people willing to undertake the journey, it will take years (make peace with this).
Thank you so much for all these tips and resources, it will help me a ton, with regards to coding i heard it will be useful to start with C a low level language before proceeding to the likes of python, but I'm not gonna lie the C language is an absolute pain to work with.

When I decide to do the PGD and Masters, would you recommend an open university? I'm a bit skeptical due to their mode of teaching.

My first question would be: Why Cybersec? Did you research other tech related roles before settling on Cybersec? Nothing wrong with Cybersec. I just don't consider it an entry point. I think of it more as a specialisation. Pretty much like Neurosurgery in medicine. First you have to be a Dr, then a surgical resident before homing in on Neurosurgery
To be honest I didn't do enough research on other roles before settling, what made me to be interested in cybersecurity was the ability to manipulate the computer system and network however I want, and I have always wondered how computers communicate on the network and the field just felt right to me, and btw I obtained the ISC2 CC certificate and did some Google cybersecurity certificate.

Your SE path, broaden your horizon. Don't get stuck in programming for engineering. Prior to NLNG, I was working in Supply Chain, Inventory Management specifically and working in Warehouse Software. I was my boss's stellar performer. Make magic happen out of nothing. In NLNG, I kept pushing for the same role. Looking back, if I hs stayed in the business, I would have been stuck in Supply Chain. Today, I'm completely away from Supply Chain, doing a lot of interesting stuff in Telecoms and Voice AI. I don't know if I would have been happy being stuck doing some complex inventory management and demand planning. Open up your horizon. Look into current commercial demanding niches. Your engineering background gives you a strong problem solving mindset.
MODAY1Ali:
When I had fewer life responsibilities, I had the chance to scour through hundreds of recruitment pages devouring any information I could find. In 2023, for a job I wanted, I went through all 319 pages (at the time) of a recruitment thread.

For this recruitment, I applied in September and since then, I only had the chance to sporadically practice. My academic ‘leave’ started early December which is what afforded me the time to practice full time after receiving the invitation.

Regarding my 2 engineering degrees. Yes I studied civil engineering as a first BSc which I got High Honours (3.91/4 final year gpa). I believe in challenging myself so I later went back to bag another degree in software engineering (not full 4 years though since I had so many prerequisites).

Everywhere I’ve been, the best engineers tend to be methodical, thorough (constantly reviewing their work, questioning their assumptions, painstakingly looking for points of failure), with exceptional engineering intuition. These people would be average at best on these type of assessments.

Still though, I’ve only ever heard good things about NLNG. I trust the process and their ability to select exceptional candidates.
Sir's, you have made awesome inputs and I bet discussing with you will be an eye opening experience.

As a bsc holder of civil engineering, I have wondered for a long time now how I can transition into the computer science discipline specifically cybersecurity, MODAY1Ali I can't help but ask how you were able to transition from civil engineering into software engineering and what your experiences were. I would appreciate your advice regarding this endeavor. And btw you seem like you engaged yourself with lots of books due to your use of rich vocabulary and how you structure your sentences it's truly amazing.

@airsaylongcome, I want to appreciate you sir for your efforts and invaluable advices and encouragement you give us on this platform, I noticed your valuable inputs right from the 2022 thread and here I am again. Thank you much.

I noticed also you are in the computer science field if I'm not mistaken, I believe you also have something to say regarding the transition into computer science.

And please if you are reading this feel free to make your inputs also thank you.

PoliticsRe: What Is The Fastest Way To Rise In Rank In The Nigerian Army? by Nabzi6: 1:47pm On Jan 29, 2024
ehissi:
SSC is a Combatant Short Service Commission (formerly known as Short Regular Commission, SRC) that is meant for those interested in field Operations AKA War or peace-keeping or Combat Operations (U assume the rank of second Lieutenant in the army -*- and R usually fielded into fielded into Infantry Corps of the Nigerian army after 9mths - 12mths of training); after 18mths - 2yrs U receive your first promotion to Lieutenant -**- and your subsequent promotions are 4years a rank or as vacancies/slots arise. When U achieve your 6th Year (Usually when U R or awaiting to assume the rank of Captain -***-), U will have the option to retire or convert to Regular commission after a physical exercise; U will receive 2 chances each year to pass this after which at your third fail U will go on compulsory retirement. N.B;- NDA graduates R on Regular Commission by default; This grants them automatic right to hold any appointment anywhere in the armed forces; a right SSC may share if God, age and politics is on your side.

DSSC is Direct Short Service Commission and is meant for professional Officers interested purely in administrative functions of the army (U will assume the rank of Lieutenant -**- after training and will be fielded into any of the Corps where vacancies exist for your discipline after 6-7mths of training). Your First 2 ranks will be achieved after 5years of promotion each. In your 10th year, you will have the option of retiring or convert to Direct Regular Commission which will involve mainly just a medical exam and filling a couple of documents after which U will be deemed converted and subsequent promotion will be achieved on a 4year basis a rank or as vacancy/slots exists N.B;- Direct regular Commission legally can achieve any rank except the APEX rank in each armed forces; In the case of army Lieutenant General. However they cannot hold any Major appointment that demand control of combatant troops, unfortunately most of these appointments R usually assigned to Brigadier or Major Generals (a rank that usually has very limited slots/vacancy for occupancy compared to number of officers qualified to filled them) so most times in the past, DRC don't usually proceed after the rank of Lieutenant Colonel or Colonel - though this trend is fast changing as DRC now achieve the rank of Brigadier General even Major General, thanks to Democracy......

A B. ed can go for DSSC if there is vacancy in the Education Corps only beyond that no hope; a B. ed can go for SSC as what U read doesn't matter everybody will just face Infantry (The Combat land troops department of the army). Education Corps is for teachers and staff of Military school and military institutes, Infantry is war, peacekeeping and training for other combatant troops....

Yes a B.Ed can go for all armed forces but only army has SSC the rest have only DSSC.....

Jets and Crafts/Vessel is exclusively for NDA graduates and not DSSC

Special forces R members of the armed forces trained for specific field OPS (for Now boko Haram & counter insurgency is the core of all Special forces training course menu) Airforce has QRF (Quick response force), Army has CTU (Counter terrorism Unit)..........

Military reserve R meant for Mass recruitment/re-engagement into the armed forces in the event that the armed forces or the Nation is overwhelmed by a foreign or local threat. Retired officers fit the profile, also Civil defence and other paramilitary bodies can be conscripted in the event of a General state of emergency...........

Pistols R meant specifically for commandants/Commanders/Service Chiefs or as occasion demands. Usually the culture is for your Aides to carry arms for U as a very senior officer; a very senior officer or a commander will only agree to carry in the event that his unit is on Military alert (by this time every personnel will be on camouflage only all day of the week instead of switching between other variants of their uniforms)......

Usually for SSC in recent times, 30years is the maximum and 26 is the minimum but if U R younger and have your first degree U will be accepted. DSSC for army and airforce is minimum 26 to 35 maximum but even if U R younger with a first degree U R welcome. Navy insists on maximum of 30yrs and younger with first degree for DSSC.......

Army, Navy, Air force is anyone's choice. Army is a place people R wary of because they have a tradition of promoting at a slower rate than others (though that is changing now), Air force is a place deemed better than army in terms of rate of promotions, though the level of discrimination for appointments against DSSC is far higher than that of army (in the army the man who can do the job and is qualified gets its; airforce they will consider Regular Commission qualified or not before DSSC). Navy is deemed the best in terms of pay and other things; the problem is that its deemed the most difficult to enter...........so U choose as your Spirit leads
This is a very good write up, and the thread is bit old I don't know if something's have changed.

1. I'm really interested in joining the military either the Navy or Air Force through the DSSC, I know you said the pay is better in Navy but what do you think is generally better in terms of overall working conditions and all that stuff.

2. And how does Navy and Air Force compare in terms of DSSC training?

3. I hold a Bsc in Civil Engineering and I'm currently pursuing a Cyber Security certification, so I don't really know my stakes, I know for a fact I'm very good with computers wayy beyond average but not upto a skilled level (at least thats what I think).

So please I would like to hear your thoughts and any advice would be appreciated thank you.

Please I don't if this thread is right place to ask but I will,

Some people have been debating about Pay of NLNG vs Shell vs Chevron and Total, according to the previous thread I read about NLNG there's no way those companies would match NLNG,

What do you think?

2028 grin, well I got my Love letter after SHL so it will be a long wait except maybe if you got love letter you won't ever be allowed to participate again.

But I wonder why people are talking about ATM cards, could be some sort of test?

I saw some people grin grin asking the clothes people wore and if they have eaten or not ( for those that got in)

Now na to wait for the next Gt training and hope for the best inshAllah

Naaaah. Loads of people got called. Many aren't just saying so here. Which I find weird for this set. People just want to soak content without giving in return. Remember that the 2028 set will be looking up to this one for hope and inspiration. Everybody wants to take, nobody wants to give
