Nnamdi Kanu And The Cry For Biafra By Femi Fani- Kayode I am not a Biafran and neither am I igbo. I do however believe that it is the inalienable right of any human being or ethnic nationality to aspire to be free and to be able to determine their own destiny. The right of self- determination is enshrined in international law and it is guaranteed by every moral stricture known to man. It is a right that has been exercised successfully over and over again in world history and it has led to the creation of new nations which were carved out of older ones. The denial of that right and the suppression and persecution of those who attempt to exercise it leads to nothing but defiance, dissent and resistance and, if not properly managed, it eventually spills over into war and carnage. This has been the primary cause of most of history’s most brutal civil wars, including the American, Russian, French, English, Indian, Sri Lankan, Sudanese, Nigerian, Angolan, Congolese, Zimbabwean, Yugoslavian, Ukrainian, Nicaraguan, Cuban, Irish, Syrian, Libyan, Indonesian, Korean, Vietnamese, Spanish, Iraqi, Italian ones and countless others. I do not believe in violent change and neither do I believe in war, revolution, terror or the use of arms in the pursuance of even the most noble causes. I do however believe in the power of ideas and the right of any man, woman or people to yearn to be free from bondage and to peacefully and freely express that yearning. It is in this context that I situate my belief in and support for those that view the Nigerian Federation as an oppressive entity which has effectively enslaved its people in an attempt to create what is essentially an artificial and unworkable state. Those that believe in Nigeria have every right to continue to do so and to voice their resolve to keep Nigeria one. What they do not have the right to do is to refuse to offer the same degree of freedom of expression to those that do not believe in a united Nigeria and who instead believe in the peaceful dissolution of our nation to speak their minds and voice their views. What is good for the goose is surely good for the gander. You cannot grant one side of the divide freedom of expression whilst you deny it to the other. This is all the more so because freedom of expression is the lifeblood of any democracy. It must be accorded in equal measure to those that believe in Nigeria and to those that do not. It is in this light that we must consider the plight of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, the director of Radio Biafra and the man that has been described by the Igbo World Assembly as ”Buhari’s first political prisoner”. We may not like his style, we may not like his radio station, we may not share his views or approve of his methods but one thing that we cannot take from Mr. Kanu is his right to hold such views and to express them in a peaceful and lawful manner no matter how distasteful those views may be to some. To deny him this most basic human right is not only an act of intellectual terrorism but it is also the most grave and barbaric manifestation of what is essentially an evolving police state where different or contrary views cannot be accommodated by those in power. When Mr. Alex Salmon and his Scottish Nationalist Party began the agitation for the dissolution of the United Kingdom and for the establishment of Scottish independence many years ago they were not charged to court, locked up indefinitely or murdered by the British authorities but instead they were eventually given the opportunity to participate in a referendum and test their ideas. The same thing happened in the Catalan region of Spain where the agitation for the establishment of a new nation is compelling and very popular. Sadly President Buhari who, like most in his generation, are still stuck in the mindset of a civil war general, has refused to learn from this. The biggest mistake and miscalculation of his administration so far is not the ruthless implementation of its patently and monstrously unapologetic northern agenda but rather its absurd resolve to lock up Mr. Kanu indefinitely and to effectively throw the key away simply because he dared to call for the establishment of Biafra. As far as I am aware Mr. Kanu has not used or advocated the use of violence whilst expressing himself and neither have any of his supporters. One therefore wonders what has panicked the Federal Government to such a point that they not only have to lock him up but that they also have to violate the law of the land by not allowing him to see his lawyer and by not presenting him before a court of law and charg

Written by S.A to Peter Obi on Media, VALENTINE OBIENYEM..(Oct 10,2015) We enjoyed lively Bigard liturgy As usual with him, since I met Mr. Peter Obi, morning masses have remained an essential part of his morning rituals. After running around in Anambra State yesterday, we drove to Enugu and passed the night there. This morning, we attended mass at the Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu, an old Catholic formation house established in 1924, which has trained many lay people, priests, bishops and cardinals. In line with the unity of the Church, masses are the same throughout the world, but there are many distinguishing features of Bigard masses. Besides the scintillating sermon of the officiating priest, Rev. Dr. Anthony Eze, the music probably reminded one about Beethoven's symphony. After a long time, I witnessed liturgical songs that obeyed the musical concept of graduation of voices. The alto, baritone, tenor and bass rivaled one another in a manner pleasant to the ears. If I were a Pythagorean or a Hindu, those that believe that people reincarnate as lower or higher beings depending on the lives they lived in their previous lives, would have believed that most of those young seminarians were song birds in their previous avatars. After the mass, it was time for a quick breakfast. This set me remembering my smattering Latin , indeed it was " Iantaculum (cena) parata est. The former Governor insisted, and indeed, eat with the seminarians. From the refectory, we proceeded to the Auditorium. The manners and morals of the seminarians were prim and Puritan thus reinforced my belief that the Seminary remains the best institution for training the young ones in discipline and the cultivation of the intellect. Have you wondered why those who had the opportunity of attending the seminary remain perpetually thankful to the institution for channeling their anachaic impulse to order just as culverts, dykes and dams channel the destructive ferocity of flood to productivity. The Bigard family is happy, very happy, with him. As a philosopher, they even see in him the fulfillment of Plato's assertion that the world would become a better place if philosophers become kings or Kings are made to be philosophers. This reminds me about philosophy and her adherents. The Seminary is the authentic citadel where philosophy is cultivated the best way it should. It is painful that the course is derided these days because, unlike courses such as law and medicine, people do not see it as an open sesame to wealth, renown and comfort. The fact is that philosophy remains what it has always been: "Regina Sciantorium", Queen of all sciences. Philosophy is like a soldier in the trenches, fighting to conquer unconquered territories. Each one she conquers, she leaves for one of her numerous offsprings and moves on. The last of these offsprings is Psychology. This is the reason why most older philosophers were cornucopia of knowledge even in an era that knowledge was mostly fragmentary. This is a topic for another day. As we were on the way to the Auditorium, I saw my old friend and an elder brother, Rev. Fr. Dr. Blaise Emebo. Engaging him, I told him that each time I saw or remembered him, I remember the philosopher, Blaise Paschal and his doctrine of wager, were he advised that if there is the equiprobability of the existence of heaven and hell, that it is better to wager for heaven and live a righteous life, because, if at the end it exists, we shall enjoy Augustine's beatific vision in the City of God ( Civitas Dei) losing nothing or else we perish due to unbelief. I also love his description of man as a chimera... In their welcome address by the seminarians, after recognizing what they called Obi's magical transformation of Anambra State hinged on the Millennium Development Goals(MDGs), they expectedly called for more support. Expectedly too, they gave him Seminarians most precious gift: spiritual bouquet. Obi spoke at length to the Seminarians drawing from his personal experience. His speech was characterized by intermittent clapping. He used practical experience to illustrate good governance devoted to the care of the people. He talked about his savings culture in Anambra State under him that ensured that by the time he left office, he had 75 Billion Naira left in cash and investment. The lecture is still on, by and by we shall report more and better. The former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi has shared 20 Million Naira to schools across the country. Obi who disclosed that support to schools has become a passion for him, said that having witnessed the impact the support he gave to schools when he was the Governor of Anambra State yielded in the performances of Anambra schools, that he was encouraged to continue the gesture as part of his contributions to the growth and development of Nigeria. He said this last week as he moved from one school to the another donating 1 Million naira each to them. Some of the schools he visited are: Holy Child Nursery and Primary School, Isiagu; Holy Spirit Secondary School, Ebenebe; St. Anthony Secondary School, Ikenga; Holy Family Secondary School, Igboukwu; St Anthony Nursery and Primary School, Ekwulobia, Immaculate Conception Secondary School, Umuchukwu; Michael Tansi Secondary School, Akpu, Ekwu Memorial Secondary School, Owerri-Ezukala, among others. Speaking at Madonna Nursery and Primary School, Agulu, which he visited on Friday, Obi encouraged the pupils of the school to have their minds fixed on the fact that education is about their future and should not be joked with. He told them that with education, they could compete with their counterparts in any part of the world. Obi disclosed that he has been engaging a lot of international organisations to get them assist Nigeria in the area of education. “A few weeks ago, I meet with the leaders of Build Africa in London over the same matter”, Obi said. Obi took the opportunity to call on wealthy Nigerians to commit certain percentages of their profits to support worthy causes as a way of given back to the society that made them what they are. He described as particularly painful; a situation where Nigerians spend tens of millions to celebrate vanity when 1 or 2 million Naira donated to schools would go a long way in making the society a batter place. Breaking News: Court of Appeal stops Saraki’s arrest By Mayowa Okekale, Abuja on 21/09/2015 The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja minutes ago restrained the Code of Conduct Tribunal from arresting Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki for failing to honour its invitation. Chairman of the Tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar, had on Friday directed Inspector General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase, to ensure the arrest of Saraki and produce him before the Tribunal today for failing to appear in person before the tribunal to answer questions in connection with alleged breach of the Code of Conduct Act. The Appeal Court, however, granted Saraki's prayers seeking a stay of execution of the tribunal's orders. The Senate President had last week gone to the Federal High Court Abuja to challenge the tribunal's summons and both parties were ordered to appear before the court this morning. •Photo shows Saraki. My State Anambra remain indebted to PETER OBI for this feat... In his quote in one of the National Dailies ''"I personally remain indebted to her(Okonjo Iweala) because it was from her persistent preaching on the need to save in the Sovereign National Wealth Fund that made me incorporate savings in foreign currency - that is why one third of the money we left on leaving office was in foreign currency, $156 million(N25 billion at that time). With interest now it would be about $170 million and with the current rate it is almost N40 billion". ... A worthy ex-governor.. PETER OBI would be good for VICE PRESIDENT 2019 |
