Sinners was good but yeah, I'll agree with you, so far based on the limited numbers of horror I've watched this year it's among the best but far off the pecking order against Weapons and Bring Her Back.
Sally Hawkins — I got to pay more attention to her from The Shape of Water.....it's a pretty good film but I thought that film was a little overhyped when it released and shouldn't have won Best Picture that year compared to the quality of the competition it faced off with.
But for Hawkins? I got no issue with her performance, she was top tier that year. I love Guillermo Del Toro but The Shape of Water win wasn't it for me.
Nightmare Alley for me would be GDT's best movie, my favourite would be Pan's Labyrinth. Pinnochio was also very good. I'm eagerly anticipating Frankenstein coming out this October.



On Weapons, why Alex couldn't do it earlier was probably because he was still a kid and was still in shock and didn't really know how to react and what to do. Aunt Gladys was also cautious and didn't let her guard down till the final moments. And that final day was the best chance for Alex to show any resistance since he's proved to be docile and amiable to her. She let her guard down thinking she had a home run already so it worked against her.
Yeah, the homeless dude vs the cop were so hilarious. Truly satisfying ending I tell you.



Heretic was top tier and one of the good things to have come out of horror genre last year. Fully introduced me to that actress Sophie Thatcher. I have her in my sights now.

Jang Jae-Hun was so effing top tier with Exhuma.... easily the best horror film I watched this year. I look forward to more of his filmography.
Together and Wednesday S2 downloaded but yet to start....

Since you're already into foreign language films and deeply in the horror genre, I'd suggest you watch Na Hong-Jin's The Wailing— that film has automatically been my best horror film of all time with the superb storytelling and history it displayed with excellent performances. Quite similar to Exhuma.

Do well to also watch Park Chan Wook's Oldboy. It's not necessarily horror but it's one of the absolute top tier foreign language films to watch at least once in a lifetime if you're deep in international films. It's a narrative masterpiece.
Top tier introduction into the director. Someone to put into your list.

A master of troubled people and morally gray characters, controversial themes and easily one of the best directors currently in the game.

Yeah, sometimes there's some actors or directors you get obsessed with after experiencing one of their films or performances and keep wanting more. I had that with David Fincher for a while.

I completely agree with you on Bring Her Back and Weapons being the wholesome best horror movies of the year. Sinners while it's also good seem overhyped to me.
Bring Her Back is wildly underrated and not talked about like it deserves. Sally Hawkins delivered a GOATED performance and probably my favourite oddball character in film this year, over Weapon's "Aunty Gladys" .

These days, I watch movies by directors I like and not necessarily actors I like. I enjoyed watching "Sinners" and yeah it is not the best horror movie to come out this year, it's just one of the best to me, like let's say top five. I am not going to lie, I watched "Bring her back" because of Sally Hawkins. I have loved her since "The shape of water". She always gives a keen performance. I was so mad at her character for killing poor Andy, he only wanted to protect his sister. But I guess grief can turn you crazy and evil.

Okay so while I enjoyed "Weapons," I had a lot of questions after watching it. Why couldn't Alex have stolen Aunt Gladys wand and broken it to save his parents since he already learnt how to perform the ritual? Also why didn't Aunt Gladys just use Justine as a weapon, it would have made her work easier. Anyway I enjoyed watching the interaction between the crackhead homeless guy and the police (Justine's ex) it was so funny. I also loved when the children ripped Aunt Gladys apart, it was so satisfying.

I have been watching a lot of horror recently. I watched "Heretic", it was so good like very dark and disturbing. I also have watched almost all of Jang-jae-hyun movies, "The priests", "Exhuma", The priest: Dark Nuns". I am yet to watch "Svaha: the sixth finger". I saw "Together" a while ago , it was pretty interesting. I have been watching some series too, I watched season two of "Wednesday" and i finally started watching season two of "The end of the f**king world".

Of course I do watch movies in other languages as long as it falls under the genre I like.

Yeah, I've watched a couple of Aronofsky's movies NOAH and BLACK SWAN which I really enjoyed. I've downloaded REQUIEM FOR A DREAM and THE WHALE but haven't found time to watch them yet.
Also have CAUGHT STEALING in my sights.

I haven't watched EDDINGTON yet. Just downloaded. I've heard it's pretty good and one of this year's best films but I've heard otherwise also. You know just how Aster's polls can be mixed.
But I doubt if anything from him can top MIDSOMMAR or HEREDITARY for me.

I think I am going to watch more of Aronofsky's movies. Wait, he was the one that directed "The whale?" I guess I was not into him when I watched the movie. I only watched it because of Sadie Sink. It was a good movie, I think Brendan Fraser won an Oscar for his role.

I was obsessed with Tim Burton a while ago and I have like almost his entire movies even though I am yet to see everything. I will check out "Eddington" definitely but to me nothing is beating "Hereditary", that's like Ari's best work till date. I watched "Weapons" and "Bring her back" recently and they are like the best horror movies released this year, okay with "Sinners" too.

Hey, I have been alright. I trust you have been doing well too. If you like Ari Aster's movies, there is a probability that you will like Darren Aronofsky's movies. I am yet to see "Eddington." Is it good? Like better than "Hereditary" and "Midsommar"?

I watched "Requiem for a dream" recently. It was so good that I had to go to Reddit to check other people's opinion on it. It made me watch "Black swan" next. Darren Aronofsky knows how to make disturbing movies just like Ari Aster.

The meltdown from the west over Putin and Kim Jong Un meeting Xi Ji Ping in China at the Beijing military parade has been epic.

I feel so bad for Trump's supporters who thought he was not going to cave in to his Israeli masters. It seems like USA will forever be dragged into Israel's wars. The last USA president to defy Israel was JFK and he was eventually murdered. There is this strange bond between Israel and USA where they continue to bleed USA financially and militarily.

I cannot put my head around the fact that an artificial country in the middle east has so much power over the supposedly most powerful country in the world. If this war eventually leads to USA putting boots on ground in Iran, I can say it's going to be one of the costliest mistake that they will make in the region.

The quotes and comments from people on my twitter timeline is really cracking me up rn. Everyone is piling on Israel.

Yeah, I saw a trailer earlier today for HIM. Haven't watched it yet. Yep I know about Ari Aster's latest film EDDINGTON. I posted the trailer here a day ago or so.

Jordan Peele is really good too but somehow I rate these three we've talked about ahead of him.
A24 sure do make some of the most thought provoking and original films around as well as some of the best films of the year.

I have this fondness for Jordan Peele, he is like that favorite uncle who you love listening to his stories.

A24 to me is a gem. A lot of good independent movies can be found there. Now I don't have anything against the big studios like FOX, Universal and the likes but their movies lack that distinct originality and freshness that A24 movies have.

"Yellow Jackets" is like a thriller/horror to me. It involves a bunch of cannibalistic teen girls so yeah that's enough horror I guess. It's also a survivorship story so I guess it has a thrilling element to it too. It's overall a good series if you can stomach it.

When I watched the trailer I immediately knew I was going to enjoy it. Issue was my procrastination and the runtime didn't help matters.



You sure do take your movies seriously. You know your onions. You're a horror fan and also an A24 lover. You sure you are a female?

On a serious note, yep, I totally agree with you. Robert Eggers loves the supernatural and his antique period setting. He doesn't like contemporary modern era, like mid 20th century onwards. I'm eagerly anticipating his Werwulf movie next year. And I might shoot someone if Nigerian cinemas don't distribute that film next December.
On the other hand, Ari Aster focuses on shock factor, loneliness and bizarreness. Midsommar was bizarre AF when it came out and the talk of town. A movie hasn't shocked me and rubbed me weirdly since that film. That film really shot A24 to global recognition.



You're missing a whole lot if you are yet to watch a project from Mike Flanagan. I call him the God of horror genre presently. Only Robert Eggers I see has the potential to match him (later in life). But for now dude remains untouchable. He's so varied and excellent at his work he can work on any and I mean ANY theme, genre or setting. He's the GOAT in my opinion. He's a master storyteller which I don't think anyone in the horror genre comes close to. But his best works are in TV show format. Mike's masterpieces are his TV shows which are so nuanced, well paced, engrossing storytelling and superb all round cast. Only Mike Flanagan can have an ensemble cast with over 20 important characters and still give each of them superb character development, you like multiple personas at once.

His movies are good and can be compared to other top horror directors with films like Hush, Doctor Sleep, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Oculus. But his crème de la Crème lies in his TV shows.
If you don't mind watching TV shows I highly recommend: Midnight Mass, Fall of The House of Usher, Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor. The dialogues in these shows are world class. The realism, mirroring of life, philosophical analysis, and character deconstruction are top notch.

He's the Christopher Nolan of horror genre.
Flanagan is well known for his TV shows but it seems he's currently making a push back to movies with his latest Life of Chuck. There's also The Exorcist movie he's working on.

I've downloaded both Exhuma and Alien: Romulus since late last year but sadly I still haven't watched. 🥲 Romulus is in part because I want to rewatch the older Alien movies first before coming back to last year's version. But most online conversations about it is that it's one of the best of the franchise.

Of course I am not a man, I am just a girl with a taste for good horror movies. (I also think that A24 has the best movies) I was scrolling on twitter just minutes ago before opening naira land and what did I see? A teaser for a new Jordan Peele horror movie "Him"! I am so excited right now, it's going to be released around September this year.

Eggers is definitely not going to disappoint with "Werwulf" He knows his onions especially when it comes to stories involving mythical beings. He pays a great amount of attention to the setting, costuming, and even actors cast in his movies.

I don't know if you know already but Ari Aster also has a new movie that is going to be released around July this year. It's titled "Eddington". I am waiting impatiently.

I will definitely check Mike Flanagan's work out, thank you. It seems like I have been missing out on a lot.

I've seen all works from them both except The Lighthouse from Eggers and Beau is Afraid from Aster. I've downloaded them a long time but yet to find time. 🙃

I think they're very slightly similar in the sense that they work on horror and have distinctive styles. I feel Eggers dwell more on the looming unseen threat and atmosphere of uneasiness while Ari Aster leans more towards gore and bizarreness to deliver the dread. Aster deals with complexity and subtle themes to reveal what he's driving at, but you blink once, you miss the message and might not understand the whole story. While Eggers might field complex characters, the storytelling isn't cumbersome where you feel lost (not taking anything away from Ari).

Still I love both directors; both of them and Mike Flanagan are the bonafide present-day horror directors with an easily recognisable stylistic theme you can identify.

But after Beau is Afraid some people really got pissed with Ari Aster.

"Beau is afraid" is actually good. The movie bothers on surrealism and absurdism so it might seem weird to some. Joaquin Phoenix did a really good work portraying the titular character. "The light house" is like complex and layered with many people giving their interpretation of what the movie might mean. I myself had to check online and I saw people stating what they thought the whole story is all about on Reddit and Quora. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe both gave a stellar performance. It was really riveting.

I agree with what you have mentioned about their different styles. One thing also is that Eggers likes dealing with stories touching on the supernatural, for example in "Nosferatu", it was actually based on vampires. "The light house", was based on mermaids. "The North man" was based on Vikings(they actually existed though) but then it involved witches, sorcerers, seers and prophecies. "The witch" obviously was about witches.

Aster's movies on the other hand bothers on outlandish themes, in your face shock effect. I remember watching the suicide scene in "Midsommar" and I felt sick to my stomach when the elders jumped from the cliff. "Beau is afraid" grossed me out at some point especially the scene where he was struggling to leave his apartment.

Mike Flanagan? I am afraid I haven't seen any of his works. Do you watch foreign horror movies? I highly recommend "Exhuma" by Jang-Jae-Hhun.

PS: Have you by any chance seen Alien:Romulus? Is it any good?

Hereditary isn't a Robert Eggers directed movie. It's from fellow horror auteur filmmaker — Ari Aster.

Robert Eggers also has The Witch, The Lighthouse and Nosferatu to complete his four-films directed filmography.

OMG, I totally mixed them up. I actually have seen all Ari Aster movies except "Hereditary". That means I have seen all of Robert Eggers movies, like the ones you mentioned including "The North man". I love both directors works equally, I think their style are kind of similar.

I watched "The North man recently." I only have to watch "Hereditary" and then I will have watched all Robert Eggers movies. I had to watch this movie twice since some parts were confusing but it's really great, I will give it a solid 8/10.
