Nairaland / General / Updated: Kabul Hit Again By Gunmen by naija4african(m): 5:51pm On Aug 16, 2018
Gunmen launched an attack on an intelligence training centre in Kabul Thursday, officials said, just a day after a suicide bomber killed dozens of students in the war-weary Afghan capital.
It was the latest incident in a blood-soaked week that saw militants deliver crippling blows to government forces across Afghanistan.

“Clashes are ongoing and the area is cordoned off by the Afghan security forces,” said Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai.

The firefight erupted near a training facility overseen by the National Security Directorate — Afghanistan’s intelligence agency — with the gunmen holed up in a construction site near residential homes, an official at the scene said.

A live feed on local broadcaster Tolonews showed the area cordoned off with gunfire echoing through the empty streets.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the incident.

The attack comes just hours after a suicide bomber detonated explosives inside an education centre in western Kabul, where students were studying for college entrance exams, killing at least 37 people.

The school bombing underscored the price that ordinary Afghans have paid in the grinding conflict as the country reels from a recent uptick in violence, including a massive, days-long Taliban onslaught on the eastern city of Ghazni. A statement issued by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, to NAN said that 11 families had showed up at Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre (LSD&FC) for testing and only nine families had been matched.

“On July 5, 2018, samples from the incident were picked up by LSD&FC staff from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Forensic Pathologist, under secured chain of custody.

“Reference DNA profiles were generated at LSD&FC from representative family members and compared to the DNA profiles generated from the victims’ samples received from the Forensic Pathologist.

“Based on the DNA analysis performed at LSD&FC, all victim samples were successfully matched to relatives’ samples.

“Nine bodies have been successfully matched to nine families, out of the 11 families that showed up at LSD&FC.

TV/Movies / Updated News: Museveni Orders Army Snipers To Guard Mps by naija4african(m): 7:24pm On Jul 14, 2018
By Andrew Bagala

President Museveni has directed the Finance Ministry to immediately buy escort vehicles for all the 456 MPs while the army will provide them with “sharp shooters” to protect them from what he called “terrorists.”

He ordered Finance minister Matia Kasaija to immediately set aside money to acquire a fleet of escort vehicles for MPs which will be boosted by marksmen from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

“MPs have been singled out for intimidation and possibly attack. I have decided to protect MPs as we wait for the putting in place of these security measures. MPs already have some police guards. Those will stay with them. I will, however, add two elements; the sharp-shooters of the army and follow-pickups that will be used by these against small arms bullets,” Mr Museveni said in the letter to Mr Kasaija.

“I therefore direct you to immediately acquire a fleet of new 4-wheel drive pick-ups with open carriage beds. Provide additional money for these vehicles quickly. The army will use them to guard the MPs and when the new systems are put in place, these vehicles will be given to army officers as part of the UPDF fleet,” he added.
Mr Museveni said the UPDF sharp-shooters will get personal body armour and helmets that are bullet proof. He concluded telling Mr Kasaija: “Act fast. I thank you and I expect speed.”

His letter is copied to the Vice President, Mr Edward Ssekandi, the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen David Muhoozi, the Minister of Defence, Mr Adolf Mwesige, and Mr Keith Muhakanizi, the Secretary to the Treasury.

In his June 20 letter, Mr Museveni stated that crimes like the killings of six Muslim sheikhs, State prosecutor Joan Kagezi, the kidnap and murder of Susan Magara and the killing of Assistant Inspector General of Police Felix Kaweesi “were committed with the possible collusion of the police.”

In many of the killings, the officials under attack have been seated with their bodyguards in the same car. This, perhaps, is why the President has chosen a separate vehicle for bodyguards.

The legislators started raising alarm bells over their security in December last year following the passing of the contentious Constitution Amendment Bill that amended Article 102(b) and removed age limit on the presidency to allow Mr Museveni contest for reelection as many times as he wishes.

Fears over MPs’ safety were heightened when Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Abiriga was gunned down in Kawanda suburb in Wakiso on June 8, 2018.

His murder followed a wave of high-profile assassinations and killings which sent the country into a state of trepidation, prompting Mr Museveni to unveil a 12-security master plan that he touted as the magic bullet to the spiral in crime.

When MPs met Mr Museveni on June 28 to discuss escalating insecurity in the country, they voiced skepticism about guards from the Counter-Terrorism Police and requested for army escorts instead.
Finance ministry spokesperson Jim Mugunga declined to comment on where the Treasury will get the money to enforce Mr Museveni’s directives on MPs’ security. He referred all inquiries on the matter to Mr Kasaija.

Expenditure

Some car dealers we talked to say on average, such vehicles cost $46,000 (about Shs173 million), implying that the government will have to fork out Shs78.8 billion

Mr Kasaija could not be reached for a comment as he did not pick up our calls.
Butambala MP Muwanga Kivumbi, however, expressed worry on what implications such heavy deployment of military guards around Parliament will create for the country. cheesy shocked cool lipsrsealed tongue

TV/Movies / Updated News: Museveni Urges UK To Drop South Sudan Sanctions by naija4african(m): 7:14pm On Jul 14, 2018
By Misairi Thembo Kahungu

President Museveni has urged the United Kingdom to drop sanctions on South Sudan because they will not help to resolve the challenges the world's youngest nation is facing.

The President made the appeal while meeting the visiting UK minister for Armed Forces, Col Mark Lancaster who called on him at his Kisozi farm in Gomba District.

President Museveni has argued the United Kingdom to drop sanctions on South Sudan because they will not help to resolve the challenges the world's youngest nation is facing.

The President made the appeal while meeting the visiting UK minister for Armed Forces, Col Mark Lancaster who called on him at his Kisozi farm in Gomba District.

According to a statement released by State House yesterday, Mr Museveni and the British delegation discussed regional political developments particularly in Somalia, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"Mr Museveni told his guests that imposing sanctions on South Sudan will not help in finding a solution to that country's challenges adding that observation of ceasefire by the warring groups, security reform and working to have elections, among others, will help the country move towards peace," the statement reads.

In February, the UK government put its weight to European Union sanctions against three former and current officials in South Sudan responsible for serious human rights violations and obstructions of the political process.

Paul Malong, Malek Reuben Riak and Michael Makuei Leuth have be subject to sanctions by all EU member states, effective February.

At the time, UK's minister for Africa, Ms Harriett Baldwin said; "It is more vital than ever that those undermining the peace process recognise the price of their actions. The UK has played a leading role in pushing for these sanctions at an EU level and it is right that we are taking tough action against those who continue to act against the interests of the South Sudanese people."

She also said that the UK government was committed to supporting the peace process and urged the South Sudanese leaders to agree a political solution. grin sad angry shocked

Sports / Updated News: Are Migrants Bringing Glory To France At World Cup 2018? by naija4african(m): 2:46pm On Jul 14, 2018
Kylian Mbappe celebrating scoring a goal for France in a pre-World Cup match in March 2018. His mother is from Algeria and his father from Cameroon.

Analysis By Michael Tantoh

Les Bleus have progressed to the final of the World Cup tournament and are set to meet Croatia on Sunday, having triumphed 2-1 over England. A goal from Cameroon-born French defender Samuel Umtiti was all they needed to overcome a solid Belgian team.

But African fans are divided over the French player line-up.

The team is made up almost entirely of players of African descent, and fans have made their sentiments clear on social media. On the one hand, those who can be considered Pan-Africanists seem displeased by the fact that African players chose the French national team over their countries of origin.

They believe these players should have brought these talents to their various national squads to improve the quality of African football and maybe give Africans hope of one day lifting the World Cup trophy.

Social media comments like "So France imports everything including players ... meaning finally France Na new Africa now," came from Chunka on Facebook. Others like Wolloman wrote "France is Africa United".

But many fans are simply happy that "African" compatriots are proving themselves in the world showpiece. "Go les Bleus" was their attitude. Pheliswa Somciza-Zibi on Facebook said, "The French our people", and Gcobisa Baliso added: "Mabamele icontinent nangoku apho bakhoyo", translated as they are representing the continent.

Below are the French/African players and their origin.

Presnel Kimpembe was born on the August 13, 1995, has a Congolese father and plays as a defender for Paris Saint-Germain and the French national team.

Samuel Umtiti born November 14, 1993 in Yaounde Cameroon plays as a centre-back for Spanish club Barcelona and the French national team.

Paul Pogba was born in Lagny-sur-Marne France to migrant parents from Guinea and plies his trade with English giants Manchester United.

Kylian Mbappé Lottin born on December 20, 1998 in Bondy France of a Cameroonian father and an Algerian mother, plays for Paris Saint-Germain F.C in France and is a forward for the French national team.
