Foreign Affairs / Egypt Urges Dialogue To Settle Crisis In Niger — Foreign Ministry by naijabetlee(m): 4:35pm On Aug 23, 2023
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has stressed the importance of adopting dialogue to reach a peaceful resolution of the crisis in Niger.

“Egypt boosts all efforts exerted to defuse tensions in a way that promotes the democratic order and the sovereignty and stability of Niger and prevents escalations that could shake regional security,’’ the ministry said in a statement.

Earlier on Tuesday, The African Union (AU) Commission suspended Niger from the pan-African bloc until normal constitutional order is restored in the country following the latest military coup.

The coup took place on July 26, resulting in the ousting of democratically-elected President Mohamed Bazoum by a faction of military officers

Politics / Elrufai, Fani-kayode Caution ECOWAS Against Military Intervention In Niger by naijabetlee(m): 3:07pm On Aug 22, 2023
President Bola Tinubu’s staunch supporters and All Progressive Congress, APC, Chieftains, ex-governor of Kaduna, Nasir Elrufai and a former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode are leading voices among party faithful cautioning against ECOWAS invasion of Niger Republic

This latest warning came after Niger Republic military coup plotters told ECOWAS it has begun a 3-year transition plan to return the country to democratic rule, a decision that has been rejected by the ECOWAS. this morning

Reacting to the Niger Impasse, former governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir ElRufai in a tweet warned that a war against the Niger Republic is like taking up arms against brothers.

He tweeted, “TUESDAY THOUGHT: As ECOWAS beats the drums of war, I recall the 1970s rock classic by Dire Straits – ‘Brothers in Arms’, because a war within our subregion is a war between brothers. Indeed, the people of the Niger Republic are one and the same as those living in Northern Nigeria. Let us bend therefore over backwards to avoid this civil war between brothers.”

The former Governor is the latest APC member and Tinubu supporter who has publicly warned against engaging in military warfare with Niger Republic

Earlier, A former Minister of Aviation, Fani-Kayode, in a recent essay Titled “BEWARE OF COUP BELT”, believed that attacking the Niger Republic would have dire consequences on the Economy and security of Nigeria.

He pleaded with President Tinubu to shun the idea of invading Niger as it could plunge the entire Sahel region into a terrorist zone.

He said, “…We must approach the entire matter with the utmost caution, wisdom and care.

“If the Niger Republic and her allies deliberately open a corridor for the elements of ISIS, AQIM, ISWAP etc to move into Benin and Togo, ECOWAS’ weakest link, then the whole of Nigeria’s western borders, from Sokoto to Lagos, would be vulnerable to terrorist attacks.”

“Already some of the elements have penetrated into Niger State, around Borgu and Shiriro, very close to the Benin Republic and some states in the South West of Nigeria.”

Earlier, The African Union suspends the membership of the Niger Republic over the coup that ousted President Mohammad Bazoum from office.

Many foreign diplomatic analysts believed that the suspension from AU might be sending a signal to ECOWAS that the African body was backing its military offensive against the West African nation.

Recall Russia and South Africa had equally called for the restoration of democracy in Niger, including the North African countries of Algeria and Libya.
Politics / Kogi Poll: Gov Adeleke Seeks Unity Among PDP Stakeholders by naijabetlee(m): 5:57pm On Aug 21, 2023
The Chairman of the National Campaign Council of the Peoples Democratic Party for the Kogi State Governorship election, Governor Isiaka Adeleke, has called for unity among party stakeholders in the state in order to ensure victory for the party and its candidate, Senator Dino Melaye.

Adeleke, who is also the Osun State Governor, made the call at the inaugural meeting and inauguration of sub-committees of the campaign council, in Abuja, on Monday.

He said, “We are marching to victory in the upcoming Kogi State governorship election. This gathering is another step towards our march into the Lord Lugard House, Lokoja.

“Few weeks ago, our national leadership inaugurated the campaign council at this venue.

“Today, we are inaugurating the sub-committees to take mobilisation and other associated work to the deeper level. I charged all members of the state committee to be committed to the main goal of this assignment.

“Our job is to ensure that our candidate, Senator Dino Melaye, is elected governor of Kogi State in the forthcoming election. So shall it be and it is done.

“As sub-committee members, we must contribute our areas of mandate to achieve this victory because it is a serious business.

“ If you know you are not ready to sacrifice yourself so that we can get to that Promised Land, nobody is forcing you to be here.

“But if you are ready to join hands together to take Kogi and move Kogi forward to that Promised Land. I’m bringing you a template that worked in Osun State.

“ I’m bringing you templates of hard work, success story. By so doing I’m anointing all the members here so that we can and get Kogi.

“However, it is God first because of we put God first, every is possible. Don’t ever think because we are going for incumbent, I have defeated incumbents several times.

“If we focus our mind and we have faith and when you have faith, anything can be done. You must first of all believe in what we are doing.

“If you don’t believe in what we are doing, you have no business here. Dino and I have things in common. I’m from the West in Osun State, Dino is from Kogi West. As it was the turn of the West in Osun State, it is the turn of the West in Kogi State.

“We need peace for the election. We are talking to each other that we must have peace and it’s already accepted.

“This is democracy. I have already met with Governor Yahaya Bello that we are coming to your state to campaign. Let the best man win. No fighting whatsoever and he has agreed. We want to have a beautiful election.”

In his remarks, Senator Dino Melaye, appealed for the support of not only party members but the entire people of Kogi State.

He described himself as the most experienced governorship candidate going into the election.

Melaye also vowed to continue to seek reconciliation with his fellow party men who were aggrrieved across the three Senatorial Districts.

According to him, Kogi needs a governor who will restore the pride of every indigene of Kogi through the provision of good roads, well equipped hospitals and arrest insecurity in the state.

PDP’s acting National Secretary, Setonji Koshedo, who stood in for the acting national chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who is the Chairman, Strategic Committee for the Kogi election and a PDP stakeholder in Kogi State, Prince Olusola Akamode, described Melaye as the best for candidate for the election and asked the all the committee members to work for his victory in the November 11 governorship poll.

Also, the chairman of the 14-member Caretaker Committee for Kogi State PDP, and the immediate past Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Philip Aduda, equally promised to work with all stakeholders in the state to ensure victory for the party.

Aduda said this after his inauguration as
Chairman of the caretaker committee.

The PDP national organising secretary, Honourable Umar Bature, had in a statement explained that the 14-member committee for Kogi State was approved after extensive consultations with Stakeholders by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

The committee was inaugurated following the expiration of the tenure of the then-elected State Working Committee according to Bature.

Aduda, however, said the he would give his best to deliver the party and its candidate, Dino Melaye during the governorship election.

He said, “Let me say that Kogi is like a home to me and most of the people in Kogi are very close to me. Most of the former governors are the people I knew growing up. Some of their children are my friends and we grew up together.

“For me Kogi is home and I will try my possible best by using my contacts in Kogi. There are some of our people in Kogi and there are some people in FCT from Kogi and don’t forget that we share boundary with Kogi as well.

“There are various tribes in Kogi and the FCT that are interwoven. The party saw that those contacts are there and decided that I should head the caretaker committee. But mine is to do what the party has asked me to do.

“They have set a template for me, they have set a mandate for me with which to navigate through and I believe that by the special grace of God and see what we can do for the success of the party in Kogi State. I have been given an assignment by my party and I will do it well.

While Aduda will serve as the chairman, Hon George Daika will serve as the Secretary. Other members are Hon Joshua Adejoh, Hon Sunday Shigaba, Paul Ukwenya, Hon Gbenga Olorunnipa, Hon MO Sule, Chief Dayo Akande and Hon Siyaka Uchunaye. Audu Idris and Hon Sheidu O Abara, Bilkisu Onusagba, Abiola Olajubu and Grace Atawodi are also members.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on October 22nd, 2022 announced November 11, 2023 for the governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi States.
Politics / Edo: Obaseki Accuses Shuaib Of Adopting ‘emilokan’ As Strategy For Elections by naijabetlee(m): 7:26pm On Aug 15, 2023
Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the ‘Emilokan’ syndrome or spirit is not a strategy for winning elections and ruling Edo people.

The governor said this on Tuesday when leaders of Edo South Senatorial District visited him in Government House on a solidarity visit.

He said what is happening between him and his deputy is really unfortunate, sad and avoidable because “the people know where we are coming from and what we have gone through.”

“What has happened in the last few months is strange and even if you have ambition, this is not the time to express it. The time table for the election is not out. You can’t be part of a government and also be the one to destabilise the same government.

” I thought we came together and will leave together and let the people say you have done a great job and they will now make the decision themselves. They are the ones to say that come rain or sunshine, we must continue.

“You are telling the world one thing and yet doing another. You are loyal to your principal and yet you are in Court with your principal. Everybody has the right to be ambitious but do it the right way.”

He added: “When we came in, I said let’s build institutions, not individuals. The Constitution provides for a Deputy Governor and what I can’t do, I call on my Deputy Governor to do it for me. That is not a crime. The Constitution doesn’t provide for co-governor but Deputy Governor.

On the charge that he gave the deputy governor too much responsibility, Obaseki said: “People are already blaming me now for giving him responsibility and visibility and it’s my fault. How can it be my fault when you want to groom young people? I believe when young people work with you, give them opportunities and expose them, preparing them for leadership positions in life, praying they don’t abuse the privilege.

“I have no regret for exposing my deputy to power and leadership position. I have not made any mistakes but he is the one that made the mistake. I hope he retraces his steps. He is the one that took me to Court; he should be the one to talk to, not me. We are determined and focused to finish well and with your support, we are sure to finish well.

“We are not starting any new projects but finishing the ones already started and making sure all we started we finish and design a plan for those coming in, as no government can finish the work.”

Noting that Edo people cannot afford to make mistakes, he said: “We can’t make any mistake again as our people have suffered in the past. We will not allow them to suffer again. That is why we are doing our best in the State to change the narrative.”

Politics / Coup: Using Military Force To Remove Niger Junta Dangerous — Labour by naijabetlee(m): 6:47am On Aug 14, 2023
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, said yesterday that the disadvantages in the use of military force to remove the military junta in Niger Republic outweigh the benefits.

It also told the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS Heads of State and Government to listen to the wise counsel of people before rushing into decisions that would have adverse consequences on member states.

Labour equally warned the authorities of ECOWAS not to allow themselves to be used by forces outside the regional body or the African continent.

NLC in a statement signed by the President, Joe Ajaero, recalled that at the end of the second extraordinary summit of the Authority of ECOWAS (Committee of Heads of State/Governments) on Thursday, August 10, 2023, it issued a terse statement “directing the Committee of Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS standby force with all its elements immediately;

The statement read: “It will amount to stating the obvious that we at the Nigeria Labour Congress are averse to military rule. Indeed the history of the struggle for democratic rule in Nigeria cannot be complete without mentioning the illustrious contribution of the Labour movement.

“Despite our unimpeachable credentials in the popular struggle against military rule, we would strongly counsel against the use of military force to remove the military junta in Niger Republic as the disadvantages clearly outweigh the benefits.

”The disadvantages range from putting in danger the lives of the deposed President Bazoum and his family to the destabilisation of the entire region, including Northern Nigeria, and loss of many lives in and out of the battle field.

”Equally of significance is the unintended possibility of turning Niger into a fertile territory for proxy wars. Even after the war is over, the region must brace itself for raised acts of terrorism or insurgency just as it might signal the end of ECOWAS as we know it today given the scenario of ten members fighting five.

“Suspicions are rife that the ECOWAS leadership is trying to pull out of the fire the nut for and on behalf of another or others. While we cannot ascertain the veracity of these claims, ECOWAS must conduct itself in such a manner that its citizens and the world would believe it has a mind of its own.

“Coupled with this, we at the Nigeria Labour Congress have reason to believe that ECOWAS in part is victim of its double standards or discriminatory policies as it was in some instances seen as condoning and even celebrating coups in the extant matter of Niger Republic.

”We equally do believe that ECOWAS did not exhaust the process of dialogue before beating war drums. The missions to Niamey were seen as an afterthought.

“One of the consequences of weaponising electricity supply to Niger Republic is the right of proportionate responsorial action by way of Niger Republic damming the Niger River with unimaginable effects on our echo system.

“Beyond all this, time has come for us to ask ourselves if we have the economic strength to prosecute this war. Even seasoned Generals do admit that we can often predict the beginning of wars but can seldom tell how they end.

“As we stated at the beginning of this statement, we are advocates of democracy and will do all that is necessary to promote and preserve it.

“However, what will preserve democracy in our territories will not be the threat or use of military force against sovereign nations but the observance of the core values and rules of democracy.

“It is up to our Presidents or political leaders to do the needful. It is in consideration of these that we join other organisations and respected voices in saying No to War!”

Politics / Subsidy Removal: Kill Corruption, Not Nigerians, Bakare Tells Tinubu by naijabetlee(m): 5:12am On Aug 14, 2023
Senior Pastor of the Citadel Global Community Church, formerly known as the Latter Rain Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, yesterday, declared that he was not against the removal of the fuel subsidy but the corruption in the system.

While he noted that fuel subsidy removal and its harsh economic impact was taking a toll on Nigerians, Bakare urged President Bola Tinubu to kill corruption and not Nigerians.

The fiery televangelist also tasked Tinubu to “mount a genuine fight against corruption, rise above vendetta, foster reconciliation, and give every Nigerian a reason to believe in a united country.

The cleric, who spoke on State of the Nation broadcast, theme ‘’Vice, virtue and time: The three things that shall never stand still’’, held at the church auditorium, located on Kuditat Abiola way, Ikeja in Lagos, also faulted the proposed military intervention in the Niger Republic by ECOWAS.

Speaking on the harsh economy in the country, he said: “What is further clear concerning our domestic challenges is that by imposing hardship on Nigerians without going after those corrupt individuals, corporations and government officials, who have plundered Nigeria over the years in the name of subsidy, the president has picked the wrong fight.

’In his Monday, July 31, 2023, address to the nation, the president stated that the vast sum of money which ‘would have been better spent on public transportation, healthcare, schools, housing and even national security…was being funnelled into the deep pockets and lavish bank accounts of a select group of individuals.

“The president further stated that the subsidy removal policy was to stop the squandering of monies on smugglers and fraudsters.
“This compels us to ask the following salient questions: Who are these select groups of individuals into whose deep pockets our national treasury has been funnelled?
‘’Who are these smugglers and fraudsters that have been defrauding our nation in the name of subsidy?

“Who are these nameless characters that have fed fat at the expense of the poor? Or are they all sacred cows?

‘’Mr President, if you are truly on the side of the poor, if you are serious about the welfare of the people, if you truly want the poor to breathe, as you once said, then kill corruption, not Nigerians.

“Fellow citizens, the rallying cry by which the Save Nigeria Group, SNG, galvanised Nigerians in January 2012 at Gani Fawehinmi Pack, Ojota was ‘kill corruption, not Nigerians’

This was our cry when we made it evident that our fight was not against the removal of fuel subsidy but the corruption in the system. This was our fight when, amid the threats to my life and family, right there at Ojota and live on national and international television, I called out by name those individuals and corporate entities who had allegedly ravaged our nation.

“Mr President, given the complexity of the Nigerian economy, we are not thoroughly convinced that your palliatives will be sufficient to cushion the effect of your policies on the Nigerian citizen.

’What we do know, however, is that on May 29, 2023, you swore an oath to ‘be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

“Mr President, while we admit that, as of today, our nation has transitioned from an administration that came to power on the supposed wings of integrity and anti-corruption to one that cannot be described as such, the fact remains that you are today the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with enormous powers to fight against corruption in its hydra-headed forms.

“Even if the allegations against you are valid, you can still have a road to Damascus experience and decide today to stand on the side of probity and bring to book the vested interests that have built their wealth on the ruins of our nation.

‘’You can decide today to take the burden of reforms off the Nigerian people and go after the corporations and individuals who have plundered our nation. You can decide today to stand with the poor and take the fight to the plunderers.

‘’Mr President, even though you have announced some palliatives, let me remind you that palliatives cannot address the root cause of the problem.

“Therefore, we demand that you address the root cause of the problem. Take the yoke off the neck of the poor, go after the looters, recover the loot, and retool it to the benefit of Nigerians. In simple terms, Mr President, kill corruption, not Nigerians.”

Politics / Economy Must Recover For Good, Greatest Number Of Nigerians – Tinubu by naijabetlee(m): 7:08pm On Aug 11, 2023
President Bola Tinubu on Friday, reassured Nigerians that no stone will be left unturned in his administration’s multifarious efforts to stimulate the economy and make it work for the greatest good of all Nigerians.

The President stated this when he received the Board of Trustees of the All Progressives’ Congress, APC, Professionals Forum led by former Bauchi State Governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja

President Tinubu in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, was quoted as saying, “This economy must recover for the good and greatest number of Nigerians, and we are seriously committed to seeing through a change for the better.”

To steadily ensure measured growth and enhanced public enlightenment on policy outcomes, President Tinubu said every effort across sectors will be documented and periodically reviewed for performance verification and public presentation.

“So far, we have taken some baby steps and pushed some aggressive positions,” the President told the APC professionals, who had earlier pledged their support for the reforms.

While thanking President Tinubu for his bold interventions on the economy, the former Bauchi State Governor said more than two million people have been registered as professionals in different fields since 2018 and stood ready to provide structures for mobilisation and sensitization on government policies.

The group urged the President to take seriously the issue of insecurity in the country in order to attract foreign investors to the country.

“Foreign capital is a coward that does not move into unsafe areas, so with your successful interventions so far, we look forward to better security that will attract investors,” Yuguda added.

Politics / Senate Halts Screening Of 3 Ministerial Nominees Over Alleged Forgery… by naijabetlee(m): 7:24am On Aug 01, 2023
The screening of at least three ministerial nominees was put on hold for reasons of age forgery and age falsification, among others, as the Senate commenced the exercise yesterday.

Of the 14 nominees listed on the order paper for screening, seven, including immediate past governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, were asked to take a bow and go, while four others were screened.

Others asked to take a bow and go included two-term members of House of Representatives, Abubakar Momoh, from Etsako Local Government Area of Edo State; Senator Abubakar Kyari, who was in the 8th and 9th Senate and currently the Acting National Charman of ruling All Progressives Congress, APC; a senator in the 8th Senate, Senator John Enoh; and the immediate past governor of Jigawa State, Abubakar Badaru.

Also asked to take a bow and go were former Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Nkiru Onyejeocha, who represented Isuikwuato/ Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Abia State; former member, House of Representatives and Nigerian Ambassador to Germany, since 2017, Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.

But those whose screening was put on hold and asked to clarify issues were Prof. Joseph Utsev who is currently the Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Wannune, the home town of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume.

Utsev, who hails from Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, is said to be the candidate of Akume.
The nominee in his resume indicated that he was born in 1980 and finished his primary education in 1989 at the age of nine, thereby drawing the attention of the Senate on how he would be in primary one at the age of three.

The two others were Senator Abubakar Sani Danladi, Taraba, who was alleged to have been banned by the Supreme Court from holding public office for ten years and Bello Mohammed from Sokoto State whose case had to do with his secondary school leaving certificate,

The Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio said that those who had issues would have their cases looked into at the stage of confirmation.

The nominees whose names appeared on the Order Paper, but were not screened included Arch. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa – Katsina State; Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji – Enugu State and Stella Erhuvwuoghene Okotete – Delta State
The screening exercise, which commenced at 1.32 pm ended at 6 pm, starting with a two-term of House of Representatives member, Abubakar Momoh from Etsako Local Government Area of Edo State.

Soon after Momoh introduced himself as a former councillor, local government chairman, ex-member, the House of Assembly and a two-time member who represented Etsako federal constituency, he was asked to take a bow and go.

The second to appear before the Senate at the hallowed chamber was the former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike.

Addressing the senators, Wike said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would not regret nominating me as a minister, describing himself as a performer.

Wike, who noted that he executed and commissioned a series of capital projects across Rivers State when he served as governor, said: “Every day I was commissioning projects. Mr President will not regret nominating me as a minister.”
On his part, Senator Mpigi Barinada PDP, Rivers), said that over five million people from the state supported Wike’s ministerial nomination and urged his colleagues to free him.

Akpabio then asked the former Rivers governor to take a bow and go, following a voice vote.

Even when there were shouts of resistance apparently from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, senators, the Senate president hit the gavel.

Another nominee who appeared at 2.55 pm was Senator Abubakar Kyari, who was in the 8th and 9th Senate and currently occupies the position of acting National Chairman of ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Senator Kyari was asked to take a bow and go as a former senator and the acting national chairman of APC.

The next was the immediate past governor of Jigawa State, Abubakar Badaru, followed by a senator in the 8th Senate, Senator John Enoh; then the former Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Nkiru Onyejeocha who represented Isuikwuato/ Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Abia State; former member, House of Representatives and Nigeria Ambassador to Germany, since 2017, Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, who were all asked to take a bow and go.

When the matter of Supreme Court banning him from public office was raised, Senator Abubakar Sani Danladi, who was former acting governor and deputy governor of Taraba State, said: “There was nothing in Appeal Court, they just struck out the case for lack of merit.

” At the Supreme Court, the same thing happened as Mrs Mary Odili said the Federal High Court Jalingo was wrong to have passed the judgment in that manner because when I was a deputy governor in 2007, they used their executive power at that time to nullify me so from Supreme Court, I had to go back to the Federal High Court, Jalingo since the Supreme Court said there was no basis for the Federal High Court,, Jalingo to do that judgement.

“Then the same jurisdiction of the Federal High Court Jalingo now sat on the same judgement and set aside that judgement that is hanging on me.”

Responding, Akpabio said: “The Federal High Court, Jalingo, gave a judgement against you that you were not qualified to contest on the basis of perjury, that you lied on oath in respect of your date of birth, then later the Federal High Court sat on the same matter and cleared you?

“What we are saying is that the moment the Federal High Court gave the first judgement they become Funtus Officio in Law and can no longer sit as appellate court over its own judgement, so you will definitely say what you want to say, we will study this because it is in the interest of Nigeria and it is in public interest, We will give him chance to finish, as soon as he finishes, he can take a bow.”

Senator Danladi continued: “On the same issue , Senator Shaibu Lau took the matter to Federal High Court, Abuja, here sir. The Federal High Court gave me the judgement and he now went to Appeal Court which affirmed the judgement of the Federal High Court.

”He now went to the Supreme Court, the court game me judgement, so there was no judgement from Supreme Court. As I am talking, the Supreme Court is hearing me, there was no judgement. If there is judgement, it is here.”

Politics / We’ll Deliver Our Mandate In Representation, Lawmaking, Oversight – Bamidele by naijabetlee(m): 6:37pm On Jul 29, 2023
The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele has assured Nigerians that the 10th Senate will deliver their mandate at the level of parliament, oversight functions and at the committee level.

Bamidele said this on Friday, at a programme tagged ’24 Hours Marathon Praise and Worship Service’, organised by his admirers to mark his 60th birthday celebration held at the palatial Obafemi Awolowo Civic and Convention Centre in Ado Ekiti.

Bamidele also said that the Senate will be thorough with the screening of the ministerial nominees presented by President Bola Tinubu.

Bamidele said the Senate will scrutinise the ministers thoroughly to ascertain their competences and capabilities to serve Nigeria diligently and in such a way that will bring dividends of democracy to the populace.

While speaking with journalists at the well-attended event, the Senator representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District, said Senator Godswill Akpabio-led Senate was desirous and keen about ensuring that those holding pivotal positions under Tinubu’s presidency are those with capacities to deliver.

“Let me assure Nigerians that the screening won’t be only bow and go, except for those who had been members of the National Assembly before and whom we knew and appreciated that they have the wherewithal to give Nigerians qualitative leadership.

“Nigerians expected us to be thorough. They are expecting us to do a thorough screening. But take a bow and go is not an unparliamentary convention, it has become a practice all over the world and that person must be a former member of the parliament who is well known to us. Somebody we have confidence in his ability.

“We are going to follow the constitution to ensure that we deliver our mandate to make those who voted for us happy. This will occur at the level of parliament, oversight functions and at the committee level.

“We will partner Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deliver on his promises to Nigerians. We are determined to ensure that all the three arms of government, particularly the judiciary are put on a good footing to be able to deliver justice without fear or favour. We are determined to ensure that the right people are brought on board.”

On the removal of the fuel subsidy, Bamidele stated that the federal government will soon roll out social investment programmes to palliate the sufferings of the masses, especially poorest of the poor in the country.

“The federal government will put palliatives in place to help the poorest of the poor . There is also another category of palliatives that will be rolled out for the civil servants apart from the promised salary increment that will be done across states and at the federal level.

“The removal is very significant because the FG will be able to save a lot of money to do infrastructure and make all Nigerians happy. That was the intention of President Tinubu about the removal. He knew what Nigerians are passing through and efforts are underway to cushion the effects of this removal.

Bamidele appreciated God for sparing his life to celebrate 60th birthday, describing the gesture as uncommon favour , having a retrospect of what he had passed through in his political journeys.

In his short exhortation tagged “out of your faithfulness” at the event, the Vicar in charge of the All Saints’ Anglican Church, Iyin Ekiti, Ven Zaccheus Ibitoye, described Bamidele as a dependable and descent politician, who loathes politics of bitterness and do or die.

The Cleric assured that Nigerians will render a good story in the end despite the removal of the fuel subsidy by President Tinubu’s administration to curb allegedly corruption in the system.

“Let us be patient and pray for our leaders. All the presidential candidates promised that they will remove the petrol subsidy and one of them won and removed it. We should all be expecting it.

“Let us be patient with the federal government. We will have a good story to tell for our coming children. This stage and difficulties shall pass away.”

Politics / PDP Demands Investigation Into Attempted Attack On Atiku’s Residence by naijabetlee(m): 10:23am On Jul 25, 2023
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is calling for an investigation into the reported terrorist attack on its presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in Yola, Adamawa.

The call is cntained in a statement issued by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba in Abuja.

Ologunagba said that the PDP was alarmed by the reported foiled terrorist attack on Abubakar, who was its Presidential Candidate and other sensitive locations in Yola, Adamawa.

He said that by the confession of the arrested assailants, the plot had the ”pawmarks of a sponsored attempt on the life of Abubakar”.

“Our party charges the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, to take the lead provided by the confession of the assailants to track down their sponsors and bring them to book in the interest of the security, unity and wellbeing of our nation.

“We also urge the Federal Government to ensure that the perpetrators of the dastardly act and their sponsors are brought to book.

“This particular investigation is important to the country because of the scope and dimension of the attempted attack.”

Ologunagba called on security agencies to tighten security around Abubakar and members of his family at this critical time in Nigeria democratic process.

He commended the collaborative effort of the vigilant people of Yola and security agencies in foiling the attack.

Ologunagba urged Nigerians to remain calm as the authorities begin investigation to fish out those behind the evil plot.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the police in Adamawa on Sunday arrested four people suspected to be members of the Boko Haram, over an alleged plot to attack Abubakar’s residence.

SP Suleiman Nguroje, command spokesperson confirmed this to newsmen on Monday in Yola.

He said one of the suspects was arrested by the security detail attached to Abubakar’s house while the other was picked up at a different location in the state capital.

”One of the suspects, a 29-year-old man, confessed to being a Boko Haram member from Damboa in Borno.

”He was arrested at the gate of Abubakar’s residence while trying to carry out the attack at about 9 p.m. on Sunday.

”They said they were sent to study the house, institutions and some sensitive places for an attack,” he said.

The suspects, Nguroje said, have been handed over to the military authorities for further action. (NAN)

Politics / Courts Responsible For Present Sufferings, Hardships, Underdevelopment — NLC by naijabetlee(m): 6:48pm On Jul 21, 2023
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has accused the courts in the country of being responsible for the present sufferings; hardships and underdevelopment the citizenry are passing through.

NLC also urged Nigerians to disregard the alleged state-sponsored rallies aimed at enslaving workers, stressing that the rallies are clear reminders of the Youth Earnestly Ask for Abacha movement days that forced them to reminiscence the days of the bespectacled dictator that ran roughshod over the nation and trampled upon all known democratic and civil rights of the citizens and workers.

President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who stated this in his address at the closing ceremony of the 2023 Rain School of the congress in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, told workers to be battle-ready and brace for another round of struggle for the emancipation of the people and the workers.

He said that the earlier nationwide action organized by labour over the removal of fuel subsidy was allegedly sabotaged by an abnormal injunction procured and served on NLC in “unholy circumstances” from the Courts by the Government.

“Whether this antics of manipulating the Courts to sabotage our collective resolve will work this time is going to be left in the hands of Nigerians and the seriousness with which they see the imminent peril which our lives are being subjected to. That is why we want Nigerian workers and Nigerian people to blame all our present sufferings, hardships and underdevelopment on the Courts,” he said.

He said, “It is said that after the rain comes shine! Today, it is shining brighter and brighter! At the end of every journey is a time of reckoning and a time to say goodbyes! Time to evaluate what has been done and what has been accomplished! We have all spent a fruitful week learning new skills and getting empowered for the battle ahead; the struggles for a more humane and inclusive globe where workers will no longer be seen as appendages but as critical players towards greater wealth creation and development.

“Comrades! That is why it is indeed with great pleasure and honour that I stand with you on this auspicious occasion that marks the end of this year’s Rain School. The hard work has been done and we believe, the harvests and its various outcomes would soon be demonstrated in new deeper and more robust engagements with the social partners especially as we grapple with the increasing threat of neo-liberalism and its offshoots such as the incipient and burgeoning anti-poor; pro-capital policies of the government of Nigeria.

“It is important that we quickly draw your attention to the insensitive and utterly unacceptable hike in the prices of Petroleum products by the government of Nigeria in the midst of the suffering occasioned by the earlier hike of same product price to N537/litre on the 29th day of May 2023. Nigerians were yet to grapple with the shock of that inauguration day price increase when just few days ago, we were shocked with the announcement of a fresh price hike to N617/litre by the agents of the federal government. To us comrades, this is most unconscionable and a further attempt at emasculating an already suffering and bent Nigerians who are currently groaning under the yoke of an unbending malevolent group presently occupying the corridors of power.

“We have pointed this out so as to prepare all of our minds on the battle that awaits all of us as we leave this place. The skills we have acquired here must be used to strategically respond to this nascent wickedness if we must remain relevant as the people cry out and ask; where is Labour and where is the NLC? A cry is out there in the streets comrades and we must respond creatively and timely to those calls. It is in the nature and robustness of our response that the testimony of what we have acquired these past days will be borne. It is truly going to be a demonstration of our resilience which is anchored on how we are able to meet with the desires and expectations of those who look up to us for the articulation and defense of their rights and privileges.

“It is on this note that we call on all Nigerians to get ready to join hands with us as we begin preparation to build a coalition of all Nigerian people; from the North to the South and from the East to the West. A Coalition of the suffering, oppressed and deprived where everyone will be a leader and everyone will be a follower. Hunger and poverty transcend ethnic and religious boundaries and it is our collective and indeed civic duty to save ourselves and our nation from the clutches of these mindless policies.

“Nigerians must disregard the state sponsored rallies aimed at further enslaving us. These rallies are clear reminders of the Youth Earnestly Ask for Abacha movement days and truly forces us to reminiscence the days of the bespectacled dictator who ran roughshod over our nation and trampled upon all known democratic and civil rights of the citizens and workers.

“As we brace for another round of struggle for the emancipation of our people and ourselves, we call on all of us who have attended this year’s programme to take charge and provide leadership in their various constituencies so that together, we can generate the critical mass needed to compel this government to listen to the wishes of Nigerian people.

“Comrades! Our earlier nationwide action was sabotaged by an abnormal injunction procured and served on us in unholy circumstances from the Courts by the Government.”

Continuing, he said, “As we gird our loins with the lessons from our various discourses here and as we eagerly prepare for our various destinations in and out of Nigeria, we urge you not to remain forever as students. The success of this week can only be measured by what you are able to do with it and how you are able to impact lives and your different unions. Nietsche reminds us that the worst thing we can do to our teachers is to remain students forever!

We therefore urge you to impart on others the lessons learnt here. Apply them and use it to change whatever platform or society that we come across. Be worthy ambassadors of this school and let the light that has been lit in you here shine brightly wherever you go and in whatever you do”.

Politics / APC Crisis: Pressure Mounts On Adamu To Resign by naijabetlee(m): 6:54am On Jul 17, 2023
Ahead of this week’s meeting of the National Caucus and National Executive Committee, NEC, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, strong indications emerged that the party’s National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu and National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore are under pressure to resign.

According to Vanguard, it was learned that some leaders of the party had been going about with a list of alleged “sins” committed by Adamu against President Bola Tinubu weeks before the latter declared his interest to vie for the presidency last year.

An APC official, who is privy to the internal workings of the party, disclosed that the NEC meeting, slated for Tuesday, is likely to approve a timetable for a midterm elective convention to fill party vacancies.

The party leader said: “Consequently, there are some forces within the party who are likely to meet with Adamu on Sunday night or early Monday to pressure him into resigning rather than been shown the exit door.

“As you know, many of the new state governors have not made all their appointments. Even at that, some party officials have been appointed into government.

“At the national level, it is very likely that some national officers or members of the National Working Committee NWC would be appointed into government. Once that is done, there will be vacancies which would be filled through the convention. The convention could also provide a window to get Adamu out.”

Another source informed Vanguard that the move to oust Adamu would also see Omisore being eased out of the equation as some aggrieved members of the NWC have consistently accused him of running the party alone with Adamu.

The party official said the controversial audit report of the party would be part of the issues to use against Adamu.

He said: “Under our constitution, only the NEC of the party can appoint an external auditor to audit the accounts of the party but Adamu, after being forced to render financial accounts, decided to enlist his own auditor, bypassing NEC. He thereafter presented the report of his auditors to the NWC for ratification. The party has an auditor. Adamu should simply have allowed him to do his job and present his report to the NWC. After that, the NWC will go through the report of the National Auditor, deliberate on it and present to NEC, which has the powers to appoint an external auditor to go through our accounts. But this has not been the case.”

While he did not respond to messages seeking his confirmation of the report, National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Felix Morka also went mute on the issue.

Hon Philip Agbese (APC- Benue), representing Ado/ Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, has hailed the 10th House of Representatives under the leadership of Rt—Hon Tajudeen Abbas for amending the 2022 appropriation act.

Agbese, speaking to newsmen after Thursday’s plenary, says the Green Chamber now has a human face with its people-oriented legislation.

The lawmaker was reacting to the passage of President Bola Tinubu’s N500bn request for palliatives to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal.

According to Agbese, the speedy assent of this request shows that the House is very much on the side of the masses who are directly affected by the policy.

Describing the Speaker as humane and a friend of Nigerians, the Benue parliamentarian added that Abbas is in tune with the realities on the ground and has the necessary tools to surmount them.

He said the Speaker has already shown a deep knowledge of contemporary Nigerian society and will go the extra mile to put smiles on the faces of citizens.

“History was made today. Under the amiable leadership of Rt Hon Abbas, the House of Reps have granted the N500bn request by the President to cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal,” he said.

“I call it historic because we now have a Parliament that understands the plights of Nigerians and has put a human face to leadership. The speedy assent of the request shows that we are on the side of the masses. It is unprecedented.

“This is possible due to the compassionate, humane, and kind nature of the Speaker. Rt Hon is all about the interests of Nigerian and will go the extra mile to put smiles on their faces.

“As I have always said, this is a new era. Nigerians should be optimistic. All we need now is their prayers and support. The 10th House of Assembly means business. “

Politics / Guber Polls: Prepare Your Handover Note, Group Tells Diri by naijabetlee(m): 7:54pm On Jul 12, 2023
A group styled New Generation Leaders of Bayelsa state, has called on Governor Douye Diri-led Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government in the state to begin the preparation of their handover notes as they have lost touch with the people of the state.

According to the group, no amount of propaganda or sponsored litigations against the opposition will save the PDP from defeat in the November 11 governorship elections in the state.

The Director-General of the New Generation Leaders of Bayelsa State, Apostle Bodmas Kemepadei, in a statement in Yenagoa on Wednesday, regretted that the current status of Bayelsa State under the present administration is bedeviled with poverty, untold hardship and massive unemployment.

Kemepadei said: “Governor Douye Diri and the “Prosperity” led government has lost touch with the people of Bayelsa State as the government cannot boast of massive youths and women empowerment within its “Prosperity” christened administration, even amongst its political appointees.

“Political appointees and commissioners under this administration have practically become beggars in a supposed prosperity government and their ministries are moribund.

“The current status of Bayelsa State under the present administration is bedeviled with poverty, untold hardship and massive unemployment.

“We advise the PDP government to begin the preparation of their handover notes as no amount of propaganda or sponsored litigations will save them from defeat.”

He noted that the ticket of Chief Timipre Sylva and Joshua Maciver of the All Progressives Congress, APC, currently enjoys massive support from Bayelsans despite futile efforts of the PDP-led state government to employ propaganda and sponsored litigations.

“Sylva/Maciver are known as human capacity builders in areas of wealth creation and infrastructural development in Bayelsa State, and we encourage Bayelsans to remain hopeful and strong as the Sylva/Maclver tickets will address the prevailing political failure and massive hunger meted on the people of the state” Kemepadei stated.

Politics / Peace Critical For National Development – Shettima by naijabetlee(m): 11:08pm On Jul 05, 2023
Vice President Kashim Shettima says peace is an important factor in achieving meaningful development in Nigeria.

Olusola Abiola, Director (Information), Office of the Vice President, in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, said the vice president said this when he received a delegation from Hadeija Emirate Council in Jigawa.

The delegation was led by Alhaji Adamu Maje, Emir of Hadeija and Chairman, Jigawa Traditional Council.

Shettima said that Kano and Jigawa States had been largely peaceful.

The vice president commended the Hadeija Emirate Council for a strong support to the Tinubu/Shettima adminstration.

He also lauded the emirate for its developmental strides.

“As at the time we went to Hadeija, we were not in power and Maje was unequivocal in his support to us.

” It was a huge support and was anchored on the fact that our team was the best for the nation.

“When I traveled from Kano to Hadeija, it was one of my happiest moment.

” I saw development coming up; I saw universities springing up; I saw a rice mill by Aliko Dangote; I saw so many development efforts.”

On the incessant flooding being experienced in Jigawa , the vice president said that the Federal Government would soon address the challenge because of its negative impact on agriculture and food production.

He also spoke on measures aimed at boosting food production in the state.

“I want to convey to you the message from President Bola Tinubu that the challenges of the place will be adequately captured in the next budget.

“In the next programme, we want to cultivate a minimum of 100,000 hectares in the wheat belt, so nearly 50,000 hectares will be devoted to Jigawa as it is one of the few states which grow wheat in the belt comprising Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Yobe and to Borno.

“I think Jigawa is our food basket,” he said.

Earlier in his remarks, Maje congratulated President Tinubu and Shettima on their successful inauguration and promised continued support for the government.

The traditional ruler thanked the vice president for the appointment of one of Jigawa’s sons as the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President and prayed for God’s guidance and direction for the new administration.

Members of the 10th National Assembly from Hadeija and other prominent title holders of the council were part of the delegation.

Politics / Senate Minority: Group Warns Against Causing Disaffection Between Wike, Jarigbe by naijabetlee(m): 6:32pm On Jul 01, 2023
A socio-political group, Pathfinder 4 Unity, has appealed to those interested in the Senate minority position not to use their ambition to cause disaffection between the former Governor of Rivers, Chief Nyesom Wike and Sen. Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe.

The group made the appeal against the background of a statement credited to Agom-Jarigbe to the effect that he (Jarigbe) declined to join Wike in the fight against Sen. Aminu Tambuwal.

In a statement by the convener of the group, Mr Athur Etta and made available to newsmen in Calabar on Saturday, the group advised those interested in the position to be circumspect in what they dished out to the public.

It noted that the former Governor of Rivers and the senator representing Cross River North shared a special relationship.

The group warned that those attempting to cause disaffection between the two because of political position would only end up being disappointed.

The Pathfinder 4 Unity, however, posited that Agom-Jarigbe who is qualified for the position, made his intention known that he was not interested in spite of several attempts to lure him.

It further noted that the relationship shared by the two have always been to ensure the promotion of good governance in South South and the country as a whole.

On the Senate Minority Leader, the group said there had been no discussions whatsoever between Wike and the Senator .

According to the group, a publication has misrepresented facts contained in an interview granted by Sen. Agom Jarigbe on the minority leadership position of the 10th Senate.

“He (Jarigbe) has made his position known on the matter that he is not interested, and that no one has consulted him on the position.

“Our advice remains that anyone interested in that position to make known their attention and stop the blackmailing.

“We want to also admonish them to open consultation with the relevant people and not those who will not add value to their ambition and to also stop the further campaign of calumny against the person of Sen. Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe.

“Let us be reminded that the Senate is not a kindergarten. It is for men, not sycophants.

Politics / Tackle Corruption With Asset Declaration – John Mahama Urges Tinubu by naijabetlee(m): 9:42pm On Jun 22, 2023
Former Ghanaian President, John Mahama, has urged President Bola Tinubu to tackle corruption with asset declaration.

Mahama made this appeal in his keynote presentation, titled, “Asset Valuation As A Global Anti-Corruption Tool:- The Nigeria Experience” at the 53rd Annual Conference of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers held in Ilorin, Kwara State Capital on Thursday.

The former Ghanaian President identified asset declaration by the Public Officers as a tool to tackle the menace of corruption in the public sector.

According to him, corruption is a cankerworm that retards the progress of a nation.

He said corruption must be fought headlong whether it occurs in the public or private sector adding that corruption grows as a result of the failure of the instructions that are established to fight it.

Mahama stated, “Corruption is a global challenge that hinders economic development, diverts investments from infrastructure, institutions, and social services, and undermines efforts to achieve other country-specific development goals and targets.”

The former Ghanaian President explained that those who signed contracts documents that produce bad infrastructures have contributed to the destruction of the economy.

He urged all stakeholders in Nigeria and the African sub-region to rise and defeat corruption in all its ramifications.

He also urged Nigerians to support government efforts and ensure transparency in the fight against corruption in all sectors of the economy.

He also called for the use of the asset declaration mechanism to fight corruption.

Mahama said, “The international community has embarked on a global anti-corruption fight across several sectors, including real estate.

“Real estate asset and property valuation are a critical factor in asset investment decision-making and a vital tool for the global fight against corruption.

“Considering the enormity of the consequences of perversely attributed values to assets, asset valuation deservedly demands and requires increased attention from critical actors, such as the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers.

“Our fragile financial intermediation systems’ security and growth face significant risks from poorly done asset valuation.

“To remain relevant in pursuing economic and social progress and distributive justice and equity, you as professionals must rise to the occasion and create a more responsive regime to aid Africa’s renaissance and growth. You must work to build Africa as a centre of excellence in the asset valuation space.”

Politics / Abia To Begin Payment Of Salary Arrears By End Of June – Otti by naijabetlee(m): 12:33pm On Jun 19, 2023
Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has said that the State Government will begin payment of backlog of salary arrears owed workers by the previous administration with effect from the end of June.

This is as the Governor explained that forensic audit of workers had begun to ascertain the actual number of workers in the state.

Otti had during his inaugural speech promised to defray all arrears of salary owed workers in the state before the end of 2023.

Some workers were owed over 30 months’ salary arrears by the immediate- past administration of Gov Okezie Ikpeazu.

The workers who were on indefinite strike before the exit of Ikpeazu only suspended their strike about one week after Otti assumed office to enable settle down for governance.

Speaking at a reception held in honour of the member representing Ikwuano/ Umuahia federal constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, Gov Otti said his administration was putting measures in place to clear the nearly N200 billion debt it inherited from the Ikpeazu-led Government.

“I must assure you that we will deal with them. By the end of this month we would start paying confirmed salary arrears.

“You also know that a lot of our elderly people, who have retired, have been owed several years of pension arrears. We promised during our campaign that we were going to defray the arrears. We will start as soon as possible.

Politics / Subsidy: How FG Used Court, Others To Ambush Labour by naijabetlee(m): 6:07am On Jun 08, 2023
MORE facts have emerged on how the Federal Government used blackmail and other mechanisms and ambushed Organised Labour to suspend its planned strike over the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, commonly known as petrol.

Leaders of Organised Labour had Monday night suspended the planned nationwide strike intended to force the new administration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to revert to the Pre-May 29, 2023 pump price of N185 per litre as against the 200 per cent hike in price, which was scheduled to commence yesterday.

Recall that Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, had Sunday shunned the rescheduled meeting after the earlier meeting held on Thursday, June 1, 2023, ended in deadlock, insisting that the government revert to status quo or the old pump price of petrol as a condition for further meeting.

However, NLC’s counterpart; the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, attended the meeting and made demands including N200,000 minimum wage. In a U-turn on Monday, the NLC returned to the negotiation table with the government.

About four hours into the meeting, leaders of TUC who had earlier adjoined its meeting with government to Tuesday after parties informed that progress had been made, joined the meeting.

Over an hour after TUC joined the meeting, Organised Labour and governmnet representatives reached an agreement leading to the suspension of the planned strike.

Giving insight into the under currents that forced Labour in reaching a compromise, one of the labour leaders who spoke to Vanguard in confidence, alleged that the governmnet used the National Industrial Court, NIC, and others, to ambush Labour to scuttle the nationwide planned strike.

According to him, “on Monday morning, several influential Nigerians started intervening and imploring us to return to the negotiation table. Similarly, government officials were calling us relentlessly.”
