Nairaland / General / Nobody Should Pay Says Governor Uduaghan Delta State Civil Service Recruitment by naijacareer(f): 10:07am On Jan 10, 2014
Nobody Should Pay Says Governor Uduaghan Delta State Civil Service Recruitment: Governor Uduaghan has warned civil servants to desist from collecting money from individuals seeking employment into Delta States civil service.

The governor, responding to the information that applicants for advertised jobs for Delta State Civil Service Commission were paying money to apply online, directed the Head of Service to stop such collection of fees and that those who have paid the sum of N1,000 for the forms should have their money back.

Fielding questions in Asaba, Delta State, the governor said that it was wrong for applicants for jobs to be made to pay any fee.

“As long as I remain the governor of Delta State, nobody will pay any money to get employment,” he stated.

The governor used the occasion to state that the ‘Delta Beyond Oil’ initiative was designed to create job opportunities for Deltans, stating that the programme, which will be inherited by the incoming administration, was designed to position Deltans not to rely solely on revenue from oil, but to look at other sources of revenue.

Nairaland / General / Suicidal Student Finally Succeeds In Killing Himself Hangs Self In His Room by naijacareer(f): 3:16pm On Jan 07, 2014
Suicidal Student Finally Succeeds In Killing Himself Hangs self In His Room: Part-time student of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Timilehin Ayobami Ogundare tried to kill himself on Sat January 4th by jumping into River Ogun but was stopped and saved by some security guards who handed him over to men of the vigilante service. Timi was later released. The next day, he succeeded in killing himself by hanging himself in his room with his belt.

PM News reports that Timi, who worked as a computer operator in Ibadan, was found dead in his room at Ilupeju area, Baasala, Asero, Abeokuta, Ogun State on Sunday January 5th. A family source disclosed that he'd tried to kill himself last year but was stopped by some people.

“The whole issue is still like a drama because I don’t know what could have made him decide to take his life. We have been looking for him since January 1. Later, we heard that he went to Lagos. He boarded a train from Lagos back to Abeokuta on Saturday and came down at Lafenwa. He trekked from the station through Enu Gada area to Ajitaadun down to Arakanga area with the aim of jumping into the river.

“He was arrested by the security men in the area when they saw him wandering with only his boxer pant on. They handed him over to the Vigilante men at Oke Ilewo for further investigation. We went there to collect him and we were told to come back with him yesterday. On getting to his room, we found out that he had hanged himself. He left a short note, apologizing that he disappointed us,” the source narrated in tears.

When contacted, the spokesman of the Ogun State Vigilante Service, Mr. Soji Ganzallo, confirmed the incident and expressed shock at the boy’s death.

“It is unfortunate that what we tried to prevent eventually happened. They (family) were careless with the way they handled the boy. If the boy had been properly monitored, this sad incident wouldn’t have happened. We got a distress call on Saturday by local security men around Arakanga that a boy was trying to commit suicide by trying to jump into the river. Our men rushed to the area and took the boy to our office.

“In the course of questioning him, he confirmed to us that he left home for Lagos on New Year day but did not tell us where and who he went to meet in Lagos. When we asked about his phone, he said he had no phone but only his sim card was with him.

“Sensing that his parents will be looking for him, I directed that his sim card be inserted into a phone, hoping that someone will call his line,” Ganzallo said.
The vigilante spokesman revealed further that not long after the sim card was inserted into the phone, several calls came in.

“We discovered that those calls were from his mother, sister and a pastor. The pastor later called back and demanded to stand as surety for his bail. We agreed.
“The man of God arrived with the boy’s mother and some relatives. The pastor’s name is Wole Oyenekan and he gave his address as Egba Inner Circle Building, Abiola Way, Abeokuta.
“We questioned the boy but from what I was able to gather, the boy was determined not to tell anybody his problem. The pastor pleaded with me to hand him over to him. I initially disagreed but after much persuasions and assurance that they will monitor him, I released him to them and asked them to come back on Sunday.
“I was shocked when I heard the news that the boy eventually carried out his mission,” Ganzallo lamented.

Another source disclosed that the teenager perfected his suicide by refusing to go to church on Sunday, feigning illness. “I remember that he told the pastor while coming from the Vigilante’s office that he needed some money to pay for his school fees and the pastor told him to see him on Sunday after church service. After the breakfast, he said he was not feeling well and begged to be allowed to stay back, which was granted.

“After the church service, he joined other family members to eat the lunch around 4 p.m. After the food, he went into his room and no one bothered to know what he was doing until around 8p.m. when we were looking for him. When we forced his door opened, we met his lifeless body. He hanged himself with his belt. We went to the Obantoko Police Station to report the matter and the police arrived around 11.45 p.m. and removed his corpse to the mortuary,” he stated.

Foreign Affairs / Spain Kings Daughter Summoned Over Financial Crimes by naijacareer(f): 1:39pm On Jan 07, 2014
Spain Kings Daughter Summoned Over Financial Crimes: A Spanish court summoned King Juan Carlos’ youngest daughter Cristina as a suspect over tax and money-laundering crimes Tuesday, a first for a direct relative of the monarch.

Cristina, 48, has been linked to the business affairs of her husband, former Olympic handball player Inaki Urdangarin, who is under investigation for alleged embezzlement of public funds.

The decision by a court in Majorca is a major blow against the prestige of the 76-year-old Spanish king, who became head of state after the death in 1975 of General Francisco Franco and helped guide the country’s transition to democracy.

His popularity sliding because of royal scandals, Juan Carlos appeared tired Monday as he presided over a military parade while supported on crutches, his first public appearance since undergoing an operation to replace his left hip on November 21.

The judge in Majorca, Jose Castro, has been investigating the corruption allegations against Cristina’s husband since 2010. In summoning Cristina, he overruled opposition by the public prosecutor.

In his written ruling, the judge said he had decided to hear Cristina’s testimony “about alleged tax and money laundering crimes”, summoning her to appear on March 8 as part of an investigation that could lead to formal charges.

Manos Limpias, a litigious far-right pressure group, lodged the suit against Cristina alleging tax evasion and money laundering, although tax authorities have not brought any charges and public prosecutors have said there is no case to answer.

The judge in the Majorca court is investigating allegations that Urdangarin and a former business partner embezzled six million euros ($8 million) in public funds via the Noos Institute, a charitable foundation that he chaired.

Cristina was a member of the board of Noos and with her husband jointly owned another company, Aizoon, which investigators suspect served as a front for laundering the embezzled funds.

The Majorca judge had summoned Cristina on suspicion of corruption once before, in spring 2012, but that decision was overruled following an appeal by the prosecutor.

Juan Carlos is widely respected for his role in Spain’s transition to democracy after the death of Franco.

But his standing among Spaniards has been damaged by the corruption scandal, and outrage over a luxury African elephant-hunting safari he took in 2012.

His health problems together with the scandals have raised speculation about the future of his reign.

The number of people with a high or very high opinion of the king fell nine points over 2013 to 41 percent, according to a poll published on Sunday in daily newspaper El Mundo.

The number of people wanting him to abdicate in favour of Prince Felipe, 45, surged by 17 percent to 62 percent, according to the study by pollster Sigma Dos carried out in late December.

Sixty-six percent had a positive view of the prince and 56 percent thought he could improve the royals’ image if he took over.

General support for the monarchy as an institution, however, fell below half to 49.9 percent, according to the poll.

The royal palace and the king have firmly denied any thoughts of an abdication.

“I want to express to you, as king of Spain, my determination to continue the faithful fulfillment of the mandate and the powers attributed to me,” the king said in his annual televised Christmas Eve address last month. (AFP)

Nairaland / General / Meet The Mega Millions Jackpot Winner $648 Million by naijacareer(f): 4:05pm On Jan 04, 2014
Meet The Mega Millions Jackpot Winner $648 Million: It apparently took him a few days to realize it, but California resident Steve Tran is one of the two winners of the second-largest jackpot in U.S. history, lottery officials said Friday.

Tran, a delivery driver from Northern California, came forward Thursday to claim his half of last month's $648 million Mega Millions jackpot, after spending nearly two weeks oblivious to his win, the California Lottery said.

Tran still has 60 days to decide how to take his prize, the lottery said. He can choose either to receive his half in annuity payments over 30 years, or take his share of the lump-sum cash option, valued at $173.8 million before taxes, it said.

Georgia resident Ira Curry, 56, was the other winner. Curry, who claimed her prize a day after the December 17 drawing, took the $173.8 million lump-sum option, which will net her about $120 million after federal and Georgia taxes.

Tran, who declined to speak to reporters but told his story to lottery officials, bought his winning ticket at a San Jose gift shop and put it in a pile of other lottery tickets that he bought in other towns while making runs as a delivery driver, the lottery said.

It wasn't until Monday, after taking a vacation with his family, that he remembered to check his ticket, he said.

"I woke up in the middle of the night. I remembered, 'I think I went to San Jose,'" he said, according to the lottery.

The winning numbers were 8, 14, 17, 20 and 39, with a Mega ball of 7.

Crime / Female Banker Chop Off Husbands Penis by naijacareer(f): 4:06pm On Dec 31, 2013
Female Banker Chop Off Husbands Penis: A Lagos-based female banker, Bimbo Danju has told Punch why she cut her husband's penis...

“Please, kindly judge this by yourself. As a pregnant woman, will I willingly attempt to cut off my husband’s penis? I ordinarily would not have said anything.

I did not realise this will escalate to this stage. The case is being handled by my lawyer at the moment.

“My husband is not a hot-tempered man but he gets angry once in a while.

He lied that he washes my clothes. He only did that once or twice when I was ill. We had a disagreement that day and he beat me up. My mother came to the house and took away our son.

“Without telling anybody, I went to my hospital and was treated. I did not tell him. But when I got home, he continued to harass me. He said I must ensure his son was returned to the house.

“I was so tired and I went to sleep. But in the middle of the night, he woke me up and asked me again to produce his son. We started fighting and he was beating me. In order to escape his beating, I had to hold his penis. I wanted him to leave me alone. I held on to it until I had a chance to escape.

“Please ask him, which certificate is he even talking about? When I married my husband, he told me he graduated from the Ogun State University, Ago-Iwoye, but that he had an accident some time ago, in which his certificates were burnt,” she said.

“When I married him, he did not have a job. He said he was working on a CD and all the money I made, I spent on him.”

But in a chat with PUNCH, her husband, Lekan, told a different story. He said:
“My pastor had advised me against marrying her because of an encounter he had with her. Before we got married, in a meeting with Bimbo, my pastor said he asked her about her past and my wife said, ‘How dare you!’

“Of course, I did not believe my pastor at the time because I was in love. But now, I rue the day I met that woman.”

Lekan alleged that his wife had been behaving strangely since he lost his job. He stated that he had done everything he could to ensure that she remained happy.

“I wash her clothes including her underwear. Even without a job, I ensure that the proceeds of my gospel music CD are used to take care of her and our son,” he said.

The apartment Lekan shared with his wife is a mini-flat. Asked who paid for the apartment, the man said the house belonged to his father.

According to him, he was living in a rented apartment in Ikorodu before relocating to his father’s house in Surulere so that it would be easier for his wife to get to work.

Lekan explained that Bimbo was a good woman at the time. He said, “I married her legally. We did a church wedding, went to court and did the traditional wedding. But when I lost my job, I realised that after a little disagreement, she would rain abuses on me and my family.

“She would sometimes destroy things in the house. There was a time we had a disagreement and she chased me down the street with a stick. During another disagreement, she took my HND certificate to the end of the street and dropped it beside a gate. Neighbours had to plead with her to bring it back.”

On how is wife attacked him, Lekan said:
“That fateful day, I was washing my wife’s clothes. She reminded me that she needed some money for foodstuffs and I told her that God would provide for us. Later, she came out of the house and said she had eaten noodles and had fed our son.

“When I finished with the clothes, I was so tired because the clothes were many. I ate the leftover of her noodles. There were about three-spoonfuls left.”
Lekan alleged that that did not go down well with his wife who said she still wanted to eat the leftover.

He said he had to go to the street to buy bread for her since she said she was still hungry. He further explained that he had to go out shortly after to get some money from a salesman who handles his CD sales.

“I came home and informed my wife that I got some money from my CD. She told me that she would like to eat wheat and white soup which I usually buy for her from a restaurant. I bought that for her,” he said.

By that time, Lekan said the only thing he had eaten that day was the leftover noodles. He said the remaining money from the CD sales had been used to buy things needed in the house.

But his elder sister who had a shop nearby was to later give him N500 when she noticed that he did not look like he was feeling well.

“I went out to buy rice and when I came in and she saw me eating that, she flared up. She said I lied to her that I had no money. She was shouting but I pleaded with her to calm down so that my people around would not hear. She replied that it would not be well with the people. She abused my relations and parents.

“The following day, a Sunday, I swallowed my pride. I woke up and asked which clothes she would like to wear to church so that I could iron it with mine. When she did not answer, I left for church but came back after the workers’ meeting.

“I got home and saw her preparing jollof rice but I went out to buy N60 bread and N40 beans. Trouble started again when she saw me eating that. She said I refused to give her money but I was buying food to eat. She said, ‘Before I say anything now, you will go and complain to your useless family.’ That was when I told her that it was her whole family that was useless. Had I known, I would have kept quiet. She took the plate of beans and poured it on my head.”

But Lekan said even though many men would have pummelled such a woman, he feared he might kill her in anger. The matter died down, or so it seemed.

Around 2am, Lekan said he received a sudden and painful knock that woke him up from sleep and realised that it was from his wife.

“I knew she had decided to start her trouble again. But I did not in my wildest imagination think that she could do what she did next. Before I realised what she was doing, I felt a sharp pain in my manhood. I touched it and blood was gushing out. I screamed and my immediate thought was, Is this the way I would die?”

Lekan pointed to a kitchen knife in a corner of his room which he said she used to cut his penis. What a wife!

Jonathan Secretly Begs Mark To Stop Senators Joining APC: The signs are now obvious that the APC is coasting home to victory and the PDP will become a minority in the country by early 2014.

Consequently, President Goodluck Jonathan’s camp is now in panic mood.

The President is mounting serious pressure on the leadership of the Senate to persuade aggrieve.PDP men in the Senate not to carry out their plan to dump the party in 2014, promising to “compensate” them.

But one of the senators, who confirmed that meetings were held at the instance of the Presidency, said most of them had made up their minds to already defect to the APC and it is final.

The senator said, “Already some of us have made up our minds to defect and there is no amount of pressure that would stop us. We will formally write the Senate president when we resume in January.”

The Senator told Punch that apart from the meetings, Mark had made it a point to contact each of them daily on the telephone, pleading with them to remain in the PDP.

Another source close to the Senate leadership said that the Senate President, David Mark, had personally held a series of meetings with some of the aggrieved senators with a view to making them have a rethink.

“Meetings are being held to prevent the PDP senators from going ahead with their planned action. I am sure the peace moves are yielding fruitful results,” he told a Punch correspondents on condition of anonymity.

At the moment, the PDP has 73 senators as against the APC’s 33, Labour Party’s three and one for the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
