Health / Is Eating The Same Thing Everyday Bad For You? by naijagym(m): 4:16pm On Jul 26, 2015
If your meal menu runs on repeat, your body might hit a snag: People who eat the same foods over and over again tend to be less healthy than those who strive for variety, suggests recent research in the Journal of Nutrition.

In the study, participants who consumed the widest range of foods were 21 percent less likely to develop metabolic syndrome—a cluster of conditions like high blood pressure, high blood sugar, or increased body fat that ups your risk for heart disease and diabetes—compared to those who stuck to their standbys.

Varied eaters were also less likely to have high blood pressure, and more likely to have a healthy waist circumference.

But wait—doesn’t conventional diet wisdom say that it could be better to stick with the same couple of foods?

Well, yes. Research has shown that eating a lower variety of foods can help you lose weight.

“With fewer options, there’s less of a tendency to just eat the next thing,” says Men’s Health nutrition advisor Alan Aragon, M.S. And that, of course, could really rock your diet.

Here’s the thing, though: This current study looked at people who stuck to foods that are recommended as part of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans—the good stuff, like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.

But the older studies that found eating the same meals can help you lose weight focused on people who ate all kinds of foods, including nutritionally worthless offerings packed with sugar or unhealthy fats.

So it makes sense that variety is a good thing when you’re picking from mostly good-for-you stuff, rather than from healthy fare and all the rest of the junk out there.

Still, striving to work seven different fruits and vegetables or three different whole grains into your diet every day would be totally exhausting.

So instead, just try to hit all of the major food groups—fruit, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean protein, and good fats—on most days, says Aragon.

Then over the span of the week, try to get two different foods from each group, like bananas and blueberries, or brown rice and quinoa, to up your variety, Aragon says.

Health / There Is Scary Reason You Should Never Douche by naijagym(m): 4:08pm On Jul 26, 2015
Gynos everywhere agree that douching isn't great for your health — that it poses too many risks (of bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, pregnancy complications, and, potentially, cervical cancer) without proof of benefits.

Now, new research suggests that douching products can increase your exposure to harmful chemicals called phthalates, which are added to many feminine care products (including tampons and pads) for fragrance or functional purposes, and can be absorbed through the vaginal walls.

Once phthalates are in your system, they can disrupt your hormones, increase your risk of chronic disease, and lead to reproductive and developmental problems — particularly among newborns who are exposed in vitro.

In the study, which was recently published in the journal Environmental Health, researchers compared feminine product use (from douching products to tampons and pads) and urine samples of 739 women.

Women who reported douching at least twice a month had 152% (!) higher traces of phthalate byproduct in their urine than women who didn't douche at all. So if you're clearing douching products off the shelves, there's no better time to rethink your habit.

Women who used feminine sprays and powders also had slightly elevated levels of phthalate byproduct in their urine, although those associations were less significant and less worrisome. And to the surprise of researchers, tampon and pad users seemed to be in the clear.

"It is possible that the phthalates from products specifically used during menstruation [like tampons and pads] may have cleared out of the body in women who were surveyed several weeks after menstruation," explains lead study author Ami Zota, assistant professor of environmental and occupational health at Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University.

Or it could be that "the products designed for external use [like pads and wipes] result in less exposure," she adds.

Another thing: Researchers didn't differentiate between scented and unscented tampons in this study — so they don't know whether certain tampons are riskier than others. (Generally, fragrance-free products contain fewer chemicals, but menstrual product manufacturers aren't required to disclose ingredients.)

So until more research is conducted, there's no reason to forgo your regular lady products. (After all, free-bleeding isn't for everyone.) Stick with 100% cotton tampons (like these!) when you can. And lay off the douching — it's dangerous.

Health / Peep This - USA Spends $450m Yearly In Health Aid To Nigeria – Mission Director by naijagym(m): 1:59pm On Jul 11, 2015
The United States of America (USA) through its various programmes, spends about $450m yearly on health related aid to Nigeria, Mr Michael Harvey disclosed Friday.

Michael, who is the USAID/Nigeria mission director, gave the figure while responding to questions at the Targeted States High Impact Project (TSHIP) end of project information dissemination meeting in Sokoto.

According to him, the USA has great concern over health issues in Nigeria and in  the northern Nigeria in particular.

Michael, stressed that they are celebrating the lives saved, the healthier households built and the durable bonds established between the states in which they carried out interventions. He also stated that, USAID through TSHIP has spent $89m in Sokoto and Bauchi states from 2009 to 2015.

He stressed that they were satisfied with how the people of Sokoto State accepted their programmes, adding that, the former governor, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, had laid an exceptional foundation for the state to move forward quickly in the health sector.

The mission director decried the shortage of staff, especially the female folk, as one of the greatest challenges they experienced in Sokoto State in the course of the six-year TSHIP programme. He called on the government to expedite effort to bridge the gap.

On the lamentations by many, that ending TSHIP projects in Sokoto State might cause pains because of its numerous gains, Mr Michael said, they would continue to build on what they had done.

Speaking on his part, Governor Aminu Tambuwal assured that they would continue to partner with USAID and other donor agencies for their sustained role in the nation’s health sector.

While disclosing that the state government would continue with the funding of its community-based health volunteers, Tambuwal hinted that they would soon develop a marshal plan for the training of 3,000 community midwives.

Earlier, in her goodwill, the wife of Kebbi State governor, Dr Zainab Atiku Bagudu advised that, Nigeria should collectively make women and children health needs very visible and measurable so that it can be addressed.

“To archive this, all governments need to seriously consider a health agenda that includes universal health coverage. Scientists, physicians and researchers in the region have a duty to improve on data collection.

It is only with credible data that we can expect effective interventions and sustainable development to come”.

Dr Zainab therefore called on USAID to extend some of its programmes to Kebbi State

Romance / 10 Things You Never Knew About Condoms by naijagym(m): 8:35am On Jul 11, 2015
1. Only 5 percent of men around the world wear condoms.

Keep in mind, this is a cross section of a variety of different countries that may or may not have easy access to contraception. But still, 5 percent is low. Really low. Especially considering the goal is 100 percent.

2. There are four different kinds of condoms.

Now that things like cloth and turtle shells (yes, really) have gone out of style, there aren't as many condom options, but that's probably a good thing. Most condoms are made out of latex, but there's non-latex for anyone with an allergy, and those are usually made of polyurethane.

Some are even made of polyisoprene, if you're unlucky enough to be allergic to both latex and polyurethane. Then there are lambskin condoms, which are actually made from lamb intestines, not skin.

Finally, you can always pick up female condoms, which function drastically differently but are still designed to protect against pregnancy and STIs.

3. You basically have tires to thank for the modern condom.

Charles Goodyear's rubber vulcanization process led to the first rubber condom being produced in 1855, which is why even present-day latex condoms are sometimes called "rubbers" by people like your grandfather and carnival barkers.

4. Condoms basically haven't been redesigned since they were invented.

Trojan had a latex condom out in the 1920s, and despite all the advances made with bumps and ridges, the condom has remained largely unchanged since.

5. Condoms (on average) don't really affect how good the sex is.

Surveys show that couples were just as satisfied with sex whether or not they were using condoms. So considering condoms are 98 percent effective at preventing pregnancy and make sex ten-thousands of times safer, "it doesn't feel good" isn't an excuse not to use one.

6. Your parents are less likely to be using condoms than you are.

Sorry for the image, but couples over 40 are the least likely to use condoms for a variety of reasons. On average, 25 percent of couples use condoms, while 33 percent of single people use them.

7. Women account for almost half of condom sales.

Even though they go on you know ... joysticks, women account for at least 40 percent of condom sales. Which is good, because you should pretty much always have them on hand.

8. Only a third of high school students are taught how to use a condom.

This is pretty bad, and not just because it'll save them some awkward fumbling when their first time rolls around. Teens who are shown proper condom use are more likely to use condoms in the future.

9. The largest condom isn't the Magnum.

As famous as it is, the Magnum can accommodate an average-size penis and stretch to fit larger ones. TheyFit actually offers up the largest condom at the market: the G31. It can fit, as they put it, a penis "not far off the circumference of a Pringle can." So that's something.

10. Bill Gates really wants to make a better condom.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation actually offers up $100,000 grants to people trying to make better condoms. Some of the potential "condoms of the future" include condoms that actually mold to the penis (making for a one-size-fits-all solution) and one with handles.

Health / Everything You Need To Know About Headaches.. - Very Important by naijagym(m): 6:20pm On Jul 10, 2015
Headaches are very common — like 90 percent of the population common. Just because headaches are common, though, that doesn’t mean you should be caught off guard when your next painful bout hits.

So, here’s everything you need to know about every kind of headache, including tension-type headache, migraine headache, sinus headache, chronic daily headache, and the dreaded cluster headache.

Ninety percent of the population experiences a headache at some point in their lifetime, however, certain people have to deal with headaches or migraines that are a lot more severe than others.

Half of the global population has suffered a severe headache at some point, 25 percent suffer from recurring severe headaches, 12 percent have migraine headaches, and four percent have chronic daily headaches.

Although there are both over-the-counter and prescription medications designed to treat specific types of headaches, there are also easy at-home remedies that can help alleviate the throbbing pain that just won’t quit.

The next time you’re struggling with a headache, try: relaxing and resting, an ice pack, moderate exercise, dietary supplements, hydration, pressure points/gentle massage, taking a hot shower, or diet; multiple small meals.

Health / If You Eat Wheat, Here Are 7 Scientific Reasons To STOP Today by naijagym(m): 12:08pm On Jul 10, 2015
Is wheat bad? Here's the quick backstory: The modern version of wheat is a far cry from the ancient plant.

In fact, the newer, high-yield wheat we've been eating since the 1980s is full of genetic changes that seem to inflame our bodies, cause our guts to leak, and trigger autoimmune diseases.

To figure out some of the strange health problems associated with wheat, we flicked through the pages of the New York Times best-selling book Wheat Belly, and spoke with its author, cardiologist William Davis, MD.

But is a wheat-free diet really for you? Regardless of whether you suffer from celiac disease—an ailment triggered by wheat's gluten—or not, many experts now believe anyone giving up not just gluten, but wheat altogether, could enjoy tremendous weight loss and health benefits.

"It means making soups, salad dressings, and dinners yourself, the most assured way to avoid problem ingredients," says Dr. Davis. "Wheat Belly also discourages people from resorting to the unhealthy gluten-free replacement foods."

Is wheat bad? You be the judge…

1. Sugar-Saturated Bodies

You've been brainwashed into thinking you need whole wheat as part of a healthy diet. The truth is, whole wheat, whether in bread or pasta form or hiding out as an ingredient in canned soup or frozen dinners, could be sending you on a path toward type 2 diabetes.

Get this: Eating two slices of whole wheat bread could spike your blood sugar levels more than if you'd eat two tablespoons of pure sugar!

"Aside from some extra fiber, eating two slices of whole wheat bread is really little different, and often worse, than drinking a can of sugar-sweetened soda or eating a sugary candy bar," Dr. Davis writes in Wheat Belly.

2. Man Boobs

The chronic spikes in blood sugar and insulin spur the growth of dangerous visceral fat, an accumulation that leads to fat encasing your liver, kidneys, pancreas, small intestines, and, on the outside, your belly.

This unique abdominal fat manufactures excess estrogen in both men and women. That increases the risk of breast cancer in women and could lead to dreaded "man boobs" in men.

Use it as a signal that you need to cut wheat. "I'd go as far as saying that overly enthusiastic wheat consumption is the main cause of the obesity and diabetes crisis in the United States," Dr. Davis writes in Wheat Belly.

3. Bagel Face

Skin is your largest organ and a major part of your immune system. Unfortunately, it is not immune to wheat's wicked health effects.

According to Dr. Davis, also author of the new Wheat Belly 30-Minute (or Less!) Cookbook, wheat exerts age-advancing skin effects, including wrinkles and lost elasticity, due to the formation of advanced glycation end products, nasty muck that accumulates and ages us as it elevates our blood sugar.

Wheat's been shown to advance aging and cause wrinkles, but it's also linked to other skin problems, including herpes-like skin inflammation, oral ulcers, psoriasis, and erythema nodosum, shiny red, hot, painful lesions that usually appear on the shins.

4. Ticker Trouble

Ironically, the government pushes whole wheat as a healthy way to keep your heart in good shape. Dr. Davis says that no matter what type of wheat, be it organic, stone-ground, sprouted grain, or home-baked, it's still wheat, a combination of compounds that trigger high blood sugar, visceral fat, unhealthy cholesterol particles in the blood, and inflammation—all bad news for your heart.

5. Baldness

There are many different causes of baldness, some of them hereditary, some of them side effects of medical treatments like chemotherapy. But one type, alopecia areata, could pertain to eating wheat, Dr. Davis says.

Referring to hair loss that occurs in patches, usually from the scalp but sometimes in other parts of the body, too, alopecia areata is fueled by eating wheat and the celiac-like inflammation that flares up in the skin as a result, according to Wheat Belly.

Dr. Davis has seen hair growth return in many of his bald patients after they give up wheat—no hair plugs, creams, or surgery required.

6. Frail Bones

You've probably heard of "hormone disruptors," but how about pH disruptors? Acids that stress your body's normal pH are common in American diets, and animal products are often blamed. Enter wheat, the most commonly ingested grain in the American diet.

Grains are the only plant foods that generate acidic by-products. And when your body is chronically acidic, it starts pulling calcium carbonate and calcium phosphates out of your bones to maintain a healthy pH.

That's bad news for bone health: Your bones could eventually become demineralized, setting you up for osteoporosis and fractures.

7. Hallucinations

Dr. Davis has seen thousands of patients enjoy fewer mood swings, better moods, deeper sleep, and better concentration when wheat is tossed from their diet.

Getting off of it comes with short-term challenges, though. About 30 percent of people kicking the wheat habit experience withdrawal symptoms like irritability, extreme fatigue, brain fog, and even depression—all signs of addiction. And get this. Wheat's even been implicated in schizophrenia. Davis writes in Wheat Belly,

"There have been reports of complete remission of the disease, such as the 72-year-old schizophrenic woman described by Duke University doctors, suffering with delusions, hallucinations, and suicide attempts with sharp objects and cleaning solutions over a period of 53 years, who experienced complete relief from psychosis and suicidal desires within eight days of stopping wheat."

Secret Wheat Hideouts
The bread aisle isn't the only place modern wheat hides. It's in tons of processed foods, including many:
• Frozen dinners
• Salad dressings
• Couscous products
• Different gums
• Canned soups and soup mixes
• Artificial food dyes (and some natural flavorings)
• Fast-food fries—they're often fried in the same oil as breaded chicken patties
• Many other places!

Secrets to Going Wheat-Free
It may take a little time to adjust, but going wheat free is easier than you might think, so long as you're willing to start cooking again. (The recipes can be fast and simple.)
Three key steps are to:
• Start cooking from scratch (you'll save money and your health!).
• Create simple salad dressing using extra-virgin olive oil, vinegar, minced garlic, and onion powder.
• Avoid fast-food joints and convenience foods in your supermarket

Health / 4 Major Things Your Smile Can Predict About Your Future by naijagym(m): 6:16pm On Jul 09, 2015
We all know that smiling is a strategy to looking more attractive, and it can even tell an athlete's brain that it's go-time.

But is there more to those pearly whites than we think (you know, other than those ridiculously high orthodontist bills)?

Scientists studied smiles in all sorts of situations — yearbook photos, boxing matches, and everyday life — to determine what they mean for your future.

Your Love Life
If you want a happy marriage, it's time to cheese it up. Researchers studied college yearbook pictures of women, looking for Duchenne smiles, which are large smiles with elevated cheeks, raised corners of the mouth, and crinkled corners of the eye that express genuine happiness.

The scientists contacted women who showed these expressive smiles 30 years after the they were taken, and the women reported greater happiness in their marriages than their peers who didn't flash big smiles.

Your Health
That same study also found that flashing those pearly whites leads to a healthier life — the women reported higher life satisfaction and better health than those with less animated smiles.

Your Winning Potential

When it comes to competition, ditch the "grin and bear it" motto. Researchers analyzed the smiles of boxers before matches and found that the athletes who flashed wider smiles before the match began were more likely to lose. Looks like the intimidation factor is a real thing, so give your opponent a fierce face before your next game of tennis.

Your Happiness

"Fake it 'til you make it" won't help you here. Turns out a genuine smile can lead to greater feelings of happiness, but only if your smile is for real. Researchers studied two groups of bus drivers in this experiment: One that showed fake smiles, to appear polite to passengers, and one that were told to think about happy things and smile in reaction to those thoughts.

Only the second group experienced better moods and increased productivity levels, proving an authentic smile wins out.

While it seems like some smiles are better than others, we think you should go on and cheese it up all the time. Just like those pesky colds your child is always bringing home from daycare, smiles are super contagious and the easiest way to make others happy.

Health / Bowel Health: How Often Should You Poop? by naijagym(m): 2:53pm On Jul 09, 2015
There are two types of poopers in this world: Type A has their pooping down to a science. They go every day at the same time and usually (if they can help it) in the same toilet.

Then there's Type B. This group heeds nature's calls less frequently with no real ritual to its toilet habits. So, which of these two is the healthier option? Both.

It’s All Relative

Poop, or as it’s also known, feces, is actually around 75 percent water. According to the University of Massachusetts, the remaining parts are made from a mixture of dead bacteria that helped us to digest our food, living bacteria, protein, indigestible fiber, and waste materials from the liver and intestines.

Exactly how often you poop is relative to the individual. The average individual poops about once a day, releasing around one ounce of excrement per 12 pounds of body weight, meaning that a 160-pound person will produce just under a pound of poop a day.

Although once a day may be the average, that does not necessarily make it the norm. As reported by Live Science, gastroenterologists agree that anything in the range of three times a day to three times a week is normal as long as the feces is neither too hard nor too loose.

The frequency and amount that you poop is based on a combination of your personal dietary habits.

For example, it’s been said that Asians have far more frequent bowel movements than individuals in Western countries, such as the U.S.

Live Science reported that this difference in bathroom habits is an effect of the high-fiber diet favorited by many in the East.

Pooping is your body’s way to get rid of waste buildup, but some individuals have taken up colon cleansing in an effort to increase this toxin removal.

In actuality our body is perfectly equipped to rid itself of its own waste and colon cleansing does little, if any, good. Good bacteria in our digestive tract help us break down our foods and maintain homeostasis.

But when we colon cleanse, we also clean these necessary bacteria away. On top of this, colon cleansing can up your chances of seriously injuring your rectal muscles, and may even lead to a blood infection.

Regularly taking laxatives without a doctor's advice is also likely to cause similar long-term effects.

Time For Concern

The only time the frequency of your bathroom habits should cause you worry is if they suddenly change.

For example, if you go from pooping every other day to going twice a day you may need to be concerned.

The most common cause for a change in bathroom habits is a change in diet and lifestyle. For example, Everyday Health reported that most individuals find they are less consistent with their pooping on the weekends or on vacation, which is when they're probably less strict with their eating and exercising.

Menstruation can also cause irregularity in some women’s bathroom habits. Prostaglandins are hormones released by the female body to signal the beginning of the shedding of the uterus lining.

As reported by Popular Science, some women produce more prostaglandins than others, and the stray hormones may make it to the bowels.

Here, they have a similar effect but instead of stimulating the uterus to expel waste, they stimulate the bowel.

Progesterone, another hormone involved in the female menstrual cycle, can also influence a woman’s bowel movements, PopSci reported.

Low levels of progesterone can stimulate the bowels, which is why some women may get diarrhea right before their menstrual period.

Suddenly using the bathroom less frequently than normal may be a sign of something as minor as dietary and exercise changes or something more serious, such as irritable bowel disease or colorectal cancer.

Depression is also a common cause of constipation. If left unaddressed for too long, extreme constipation can lead to an impacted bowel — a treatable but extremely unpleasant health condition.

When it comes to bathroom habits, your own intuition should be the first reference you turn to. As long as your bathroom trips don't cause pain or discomfort you are most likely in the clear.

Your digestive system works all day and every day, so slight hiccups are to be expected. But if either constipation or diarrhea lasts for longer than weeks at a time, it may be time to seek medical assistance.

Romance / 5 Things That Can Suppress A Woman's Libido by naijagym(m): 2:31pm On Jul 09, 2015
There are lots of things that can quell a woman’s desire to have sex, Kavaler told Live Science. These range from psychological factors, such as her self-esteem and mental health, to physical factors, such as her hormone levels and how well she’s sleeping, Kavaler said.

In fact, researchers have conducted dozens of studies exploring the many reasons why a woman might not feel like having sex.

Here are five reasons that women may not be in the mood sad cry:

1. She’s in pain.

Several studies have explored the relationship between sex and pain in women. One study, published in 2009 in The Journal of sexual Medicine, looked at women with dyspareunia — a condition that results in recurrent private part pain during intercourse and that’s estimated to affect 8 to 21 percent of women worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The study found that women with dyspareunia have thoughts about pain that can be easily activated, said Lea Thaler, a researcher at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas who led the study.

Shortly after that study’s publication, Thaler told Live Science in an interview that women with the condition tend to be “hyper-vigilant about” (or constantly on the lookout for) pain during sex.

Although Thaler’s study didn’t focus on how this increased vigilance about pain may affect a woman’s desire to have sex, other studies have explored the relationship between pain and libido.

A 2014 study published in The Journal of Neuroscience found that female mice that are in pain are less motivated to have sex than female mice that are not in pain.

The study also found that the same thing is not true for male mice, which were willing to copulate even when in pain.

The findings of this study could provide clues about how libido works in women, according to the researchers, who told Live Science that their findings could help scientists understand why women with chronic pain often experience a decreased desire to have sex.

2. She’s on the pill.

Women who use hormonal contraceptives, such as the pill or the patch, are more likely to have a decreased sex drive than women who don’t use hormonal contraceptives, according to a study published in 2010 in the Journal of sexual Medicine.

The link between hormonal contraceptives and low libido needs to be explored further, said the authors, who noted that their findings are preliminary.

Specifically, the researchers said they would like to study the effects of different dosages of estrogen and synthetic progestins (two types of hormones commonly used in contraceptives) on female sexual function.

In 2013, researchers with the European Society of Contraception and Reproductive Health conducted a systematic review of the literature surrounding the link between sexual desire and the use of combined oral contraceptives (which contain both estrogen and synthetic progestins).

They reviewed 36 studies and found that, among the hormonal contraceptive users, 85 percent reported an increase in libido or no change in libido when taking these contraceptives, while 15 percent reported a decrease in libido.

The researchers also found that women who reported a decrease in libido were taking contraceptives containing a lower dose of estrogen hormones.

3. She’d rather self service.

Although testosterone is the hormone most often associated with virility in men, this chemical may actually decrease a woman’s desire to have sex (at least with other people), according to a study published in 2012 in the journal Archives of sexual Behavior.

The study, which found a link between higher levels of testosterone and decreased sex drive in women, also found that high-testosterone women were more likely to self service than low-testosterone women.

Interestingly, the researchers found that men’s levels of testosterone did not affect sexual desire. The average man reported more sexual desire than the average woman, the researchers found,

4. She’s just not that into you (anymore).

Women’s desire may fade as a relationship goes on, according to a study published in 2012 in the Journal of sex & Marital Therapy. Researchers polled 170 heterosexual men and women who had been in relationships for between one and nine months.

They found that although most participants reported feeling satisfied with their relationships and sex lives, women reported lower levels of desire related to the length of their relationships.

Specifically, the researchers found that for each additional month women were in a relationship with their partner, their sexual desire decreased by a small amount — 0.02 points on the Female sexual Function Index (a self-reporting tool that helps scientists study female sexual arousal, pain, satisfaction and climax).

This finding did not hold true for men, whose sexual desire remained steady over time.

“When an individual has had sex with their partner over the course of many, many years, it takes creativity and openness to keep things fresh and exciting, Sarah Murray, one of the sex researchers who conducted the study at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, told Live Science.

“Making time to be together and keep one’s sex life as an important part of one’s relationship is very important, and putting in effort and keeping things fun and interesting are crucial components.”

5. She has a headache.

Women who get frequent headaches or migraines are more likely to have dysfunctional sex lives than women without these health issues, according to a study published in 2012 in the Journal of sexual Medicine.

The study, which looked at 100 women being treated for headaches, found that 91 percent of the patients’ scores on a questionnaire showed they had sex problems beyond what would be considered within the normal range.

Among these problems was low sex drive. About 17 percent of the women surveyed said they weren’t interested in having sex, and another 20 percent of study participants said they not only had a low sex drive, but were also distressed about their lack of desire.

There are many possible reasons why headaches and low sex drive may be linked. Research shows that any type of chronic pain affects desire and arousal, and also that people with headaches often have mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, both of which have been shown to affect sex drive and sexual satisfaction.

The medications taken to treat headaches, depression or anxiety can also interfere with a woman’s desire to slip between the sheets.

Romance / 5 Signs She'll Be Good In Bed by naijagym(m): 2:14pm On Jul 09, 2015
Is it possible to reliably predict what a woman is like in bed? The love scientists say yes – sort of.

"It's very hard to gauge," explains Helen Fisher, an anthropologist at Rutgers University and author of Why We Love, a new book about the nature and chemistry of romantic love.

A woman's high heels, short skirt, and follow-me walk mean little. "Those are signs of intention. But they are not signs that this person is actually good in bed and is compatible with you."

So, besides that old cliche about how she dances, what signs can a man go by? Start with these.

1. She Eats It Up

Take note of how she handles her food. "Watch how she uses her fork. Does she enjoy things? Is she sensuous? Is she poky and grabby?" says Candida Royalle, a producer of femme-friendly adult films and a veteran adult-film star. "If someone eats slowly, it's likely that they like to make love for a long time. I'm one of the slowest eaters I know."

2. She Screams for Ice Cream

You may find the perfect lover by comparing tastes in ice cream, says Alan Hirsch, a neurologist and director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago. Researchers call this "ice-cream hedonics."

Dr. Hirsch conducted a study of 720 people, ages 24 to 59, in which he correlated personality tests, their favorite ice-cream flavors, their partners' favorite ice creams, and relationship status.

Coffee-ice-cream lovers – found to be dramatic, seductive, flirtatious – are most romantically compatible with strawberry fans. Vanilla gals (emotionally expressive and fond of PDA) melt best with rocky-road guys. And mint-chocolate-chip fans are meant for each other.

3. She Talks Like You

There's a scene in Broadcast News in which William Hurt tells Holly Hunter that listening to her talk in his earpiece while he was on the air was "like great sex!" See if you get a similar buzz from your potential bedmate.

"The first thing to look for is mirroring of verbal behavior and pace," explains Michael Cunningham, a professor of social psychology at the University of Louisville.

"That is, if her pace and her nonverbal behavior match yours, her sexual behavior, which is also nonverbal, will also likely match.

If one person seems really slow moving and the other person seems fidgety, they're going to have different sexual paces.

"If somebody says something and the other person goes on to another subject," he says, "they're not tuning in very well. They probably won't tune in during sex, either."

4. She Knows Who Sid Vicious Is

"Young women often aren't relaxed enough to have an orgasm," Fisher says. Older women know what they like and will tell you.

"They realize that if they have frequent orgasms, it's better for the man in the long run."

At menopause, "levels of estrogen recede, unmasking the power of testosterone," Fisher says. "This allows women to be more assertive and demanding, and many of them become more interested in sex."

5. She Gives Good Lip

"The way you kiss says a lot about how you make love," says Ava Cadell, an L.A.-based sexologist and author. "I call kissing 'facial intercourse.' It's not just using the lips; it's using the entire body.

If she uses her hands on you and presses her breasts into you and moans and groans, she's going to be a great lover.

"The best female lovers also create sexual anticipation. They start with baby kisses, and then maybe lick your top lip and suck your bottom lip, and as they're doing that, they play with your hair, or put your hands on them. It's sort of like a dance."

Health / Constantly Sitting Down Could Worsen Mental Health And Anxiety - Study by naijagym(m): 11:14am On Jul 09, 2015
We already know that sitting is bad for pretty much every aspect of your health: It weakens your muscles, impairs blood circulation, and increases your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and obesity.

But it turns out that sitting all day at work, then sitting all night at home in front of the TV, are detrimental to your mental health, too.

A new study examines how a sedentary lifestyle can increase your anxiety. Researchers out of Deakin University’s Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research in Australia found that low-energy activities and sitting down likely makes your anxiety worse.

Working at a computer all day, watching TV, playing video games, or simply crouching over your phone or laptop in bed are all considered low-energy activities that are eating away at your mental acuity.

Megan Teychenne, the lead researcher of the study, notes that modern society has seen a huge surge of anxiety disorders in recent years.

In the U.S., anxiety affects some 40 million adults, or 18 percent of the population, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.

While this increase in anxiety might result from several factors, such as more frequent use of distracting technology and social media or increased urban sprawl and air pollution, the researchers wanted to investigate the link between anxiety and sedentary living.

“[W]e are seeing an increase in anxiety symptoms in our modern society, which seems to parallel the increase in sedentary behavior,” Teychenne said in a press release. “Thus, we were interested to see whether these two factors were in fact linked.”

The study analyzed nine different studies that had previously examined anxiety and sedentary behavior. Five of the nine studies found that sedentary behavior was associated with a higher risk of anxiety.

One-third of American adults are obese, and the majority of Americans live sedentary lifestyles that fuel obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

The mental health consequences of the obesity epidemic haven't been explored, though plenty of studies have associated lack of physical activity with an increased risk of depression and anxiety.

When your day is especially sedentary, make the choice to take a step outside and go for a thirty minute walk. The exercise, and hopefully time spent in nature, will do your body and mind good.

“It is important that we understand the behavioral factors that may be linked to anxiety — in order to be able to develop evidence-based strategies in preventing/managing this illness,” Teychenne said.

“Our research showed that evidence is available to suggest a positive association between sitting time and anxiety symptoms, however, the direction of this relationship still needs to be determined through longitudinal and interventional studies.”
