PoliticsTeenager, 9-year-old Arrested For Kidnapping 9-month-old Baby by naijapips(op): 6:39pm On May 22, 2015
A teenager, Racheal John, and Joy Atunramu, 9, have been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly kidnapping their neighbour’s nine-month-old baby.

According to reports, the baby was said to have been taken from the mother’s shop at the Old Toll gate area of the town by Atunramu, allegedly acting on the instruction of John.

Muyiwa Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said, John was later arrested with the baby at the Ogbere area of Ijebu when the mother of the baby laid a complaint.

He said, “Investigation revealed that the suspect had a conflict with the mother of the baby before the baby was stolen.

“She vowed via a written letter to deal with the mother of the baby.

“The mother did not know who actually stole the baby, but neighbours and some eyewitnesses, who saw the suspect with the baby ─ who was stolen by Atunramu on the instruction of the first suspect, John ─ intimated the mother and the police detectives before the arrest of the suspects.

“It was also gathered that the suspect (John) allegedly demanded the sum of N2m as ransom before she would release the baby.”

PoliticsWhy Applicants Are Denied US Visas – Consul-general by naijapips(op): 3:21pm On May 22, 2015
The Consul-General, United States Embassy, William Laidlaw, has said the US visa application processes were simple and not as stringent as people thought, stressing that the mission was working to improve and make its visa processes better for Nigerians by decentralising it.

Laidlaw explained that to qualify for a visit to the US, an applicant must show that he has social and economic ties sufficient to meet the American immigration terms, adding that those who failed to meet this requirement are often turned down.

The Consul-General, who said this during a tour of the US Consular Section by select journalists in Abuja on Thursday, added that those who had social and economic ties usually had easier time and more chance to obtain US visa than somebody who is just starting out.

He said, “To really qualify for a visit to the US, you have to show you have social and economic ties sufficient to meet the immigration terms we have in our laws.

“To have those social and economic ties usually means somebody who has developed a career, developed a household and has done something to develop himself within Nigeria.”

Laidlaw said people who were refused visa could re-apply if they felt that the situations had changed, as according to him, statistics showed that many who re-applied were issued visas.

“If you can establish your social and economic ties and we understand who you are in Nigerian context, that allows us to make an evaluation judgment; It’s very hard for very young people, I’m sorry, but that’s the way the law is written,” he said.

He, however, said young business people or students who did not receive a visa should not be discouraged as they could be successful the next time they applied.

According to him, no fewer than 7,000 Nigerians are studying in his country, noting that 66 per cent of tourist visa applications were approved in 2014.

The Consul-General said the missions in Abuja and Lagos processed about 400 to 900 visa applications daily, excluding the drop-box applications which are meant for visa renewal.

He said, “Between 2009 and 2014, visa applications rose by 345 per cent in our missions based in Abuja and Lagos. Nigeria is an expanding country and the Nigerian middle class is becoming more and more prominent and growing and all those things reflected in the growth rate we see in visa applications.”

Politics19 People Killed Monthly In Rivers Election Violence by naijapips(op): 3:11pm On May 22, 2015
A monthly average of 19 killings occurred in Rivers State between November 2014 and April 2015, a Rivers Commission of Inquiry has said.

At the presentation of the final draft of the report to the Rivers State government, Thursday, the Commission noted that out of the 97 allegations of killings it received, 94 of them occurred between November 15, 2014, and April 11, 2015.

“This report reaffirms that no state or country should allow a repeat of such violence in the name of politics,” said Chidi Odinkalu, a professor of Law and chairman of the commission.

“It also shows how and why Rivers State and Nigeria must end impunity for political violence.”

The Commission was instituted by Governor Rotimi Amaechi, in April, to probe politically-motivated killings and destruction of properties before and during the 2015 general elections.

The inquiry opened on May 4 and undertook seven days of public hearings during which it heard over 18 hours of oral testimony, in respect of 43 memoranda concerning incidents of violence from 11 of the 23 local government areas in Rivers State.

Forty-nine witnesses testified on oath, four of them ‘in camera.’ They also inspected 10 buildings damaged in alleged political violence and arranged for the valuation of 21 properties destroyed in political violence. In addition, the inquiry also entertained three confidential expert briefings and admitted and examined 221 exhibits.

According to Mr. Odinkalu, the commission received reports of 83 incidents of destruction of property, including acts of vandalism and arson. Seven of the incidents occurred before the election while 77 occurred during the election.

A total of 275 different violations involving killings, injuries to persons or destruction were reported to the Inquiry.

Also, 236 alleged perpetrators were identified in testimonies – while 120 people were named, 116 were unidentified.

“The evidence suggests a significant incidence of internal displacement resulted from political violence in many parts of Rivers State,” Mr. Odinkalu said.

“The Commission of Inquiry also received evidence which strongly suggested that sexual violence was part of the arsenal of political violence in some areas.”

Mr. Odinkalu noted that many of those who testified before the commission appeared genuinely afraid for their lives, some declined to show up, while some withdrew after being threatened.

One member of the commission withdrew from further participation after receiving threats to his life.

Mr. Odinkalu criticised the attitude of security institutions in Rivers State to the work of the commission, adding that it tended to corroborate several witnesses’ allegations that mostly indifferent to acts of political violence in the state.

At the commission’s inaugural sitting on May 4, Patience Adube narrated how her husband, Christopher, was killed at their home in Obrikom, ONELGA (Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area).

Mr. Adube, a former caretaker chairman of the local government, and his three sons were shot to death on April 3. His son-in-law, Ikechukwu, and one of his security men were also fatally shot as gunmen invaded his residence.

Mr. Odinkalu stated that the difficulties encountered by the commission paled into insignificance beside the ordeals of some of the victims of the violence.

“We met some of their survivors,” he said. “There were children orphaned. The youngest we met was 9 months old when his father was killed in his presence. He was still breastfeeding.

“We met young widows of political violence, as well as grand-mothers who had to bury their grand-sons killed in violence. Their stories deserve to be told and heard. They deserve justice as well as political leaders and security agencies that will protect their best interests.”

Receiving the report on behalf of the state government, Emmanuel Chinda said the commission was set up in fulfilment of the government’s primary responsibility of protecting lives and properties.

Mr. Chinda said the state governor had directed that the report be translated into a white paper “as soon as possible.”

“The government set up this Commission to ensure that whoever deserves justice would get it as soon as possible,” said Mr. Chinda, the commissioner for Agriculture. “We will make sure that the purpose for setting up the Commission is fulfilled.”

PoliticsBuhari To Cancel Laws Blocking EFCC From Prosecuting High Profile Cases by naijapips(op): 1:41pm On May 22, 2015
The incoming Buhari-led administration may discard the regulations drawn for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), The Punch reports.

buhari22

The regulation, a subsidiary legislation derived from provisions of section 43 of the EFCC (Establishment) Act 2004, is believed to be hampering the independence of the anti-graft agency in prosecuting high profile corruption cases.

Section 10 of the regulation mandates the EFCC to report the outcome of its investigations on “serious or complex” cases to the AGF before commencing prosecution.

What constitutes a “serious or complex” case, according to Adoke, includes having a “significant international dimension,” involves money or assets worth N50m, or is likely to be of widespread public concern, among others.

“The incoming government will ensure that there is no interference with the investigation and prosecution by the EFCC. So, parts of Adoke’s regulation will be reviewed if not completely discarded,” the source said.

PoliticsSupreme Court Stops Chevron From Selling Disputed Oil Blocks by naijapips(op): 6:33am On May 19, 2015
The Supreme Court on Monday restrained Chevron from selling some disputed oil blocks to an oil firm, Seplat Petroleum Development Company Limited, following a pending appeal challenging the planned transactions.

The appeal before the apex court was filed by Brittania-U Limited, seeking to halt any planned sale of the oil blocks – Oil Mining Lease 52, OML 53 and OML 55 – which it said rightly belonged to it.

The appeal arose from the ruling of the Court of Appeal, setting aside an order of interlocutory injunction, restraining Chevron and Seplat from concluding any deal on the oil leases.

On Monday, the five-man panel of the Supreme Court, presided over by Justice Tanko Muhammad, ordered parties to maintain the status quo pending the determination of the appellant’s appeal.

“Parties in the matter are ordered to maintain status quo. No party is allowed to take any step that will affect the res (subject matter) of the appeal,” Justice Muhammad ruled.

The appellant’s lawyer, Rickey Tarfa (SAN), had earlier reminded the court that at the last sitting on March 24, 2015, the appellant’s application for mandatory injunction was adjourned till Monday for hearing.

But the counsel for Seplat, Damian Dodo (SAN), contended that instead of dissipating energy on the interlocutory application, the apex court should entertain the main appeal.

‎Counsel for Chevron Nigeria and BNP Paribas Securities Corp, Uche Nwoye (SAN), and that of Chevron U.S.A Inc and Mr. Hermant Patel (also a respondent in the suit), Mr. A. V. Etuwewe, all agreed with Dodo’s submission.

But in his response, Tarfa‎ explained that it was necessary to hear his application for mandatory injunction as there might be nothing to benefit from the appeal if an injunction to protect the subject matter of the suit was not issued.

‎Following Tarfa’s submission, the Presiding Justice, Justice Muhammad, asked the respondents’ counsel if they were ready to give undertaking on behalf of their clients not to take any action against the subject matter.

In its unanimous decision, the apex court, then ordered parties to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of the appeal, which it adjourned for hearing till October 6.

PoliticsMinistry Confirms 28 Children Dead From Lead Poisoning In Niger by naijapips(op): 12:27pm On May 17, 2015
The Ministry of Mines and Steel Development yesterday confirmed the death on 28 children from lead poisoning in Niger State.
A statement from the ministry said a case of lead poisoning purportedly resulting from the activities of informal (illegal) miners in Angwan Maijero and Angwan Karo, Madaka District, Rafi Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State was reported by its Federal Mines Officer in charge of the state, last Wednesday.

According to Deputy Director, Press, Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Ambrose Momoh, the ministry had dispatched its Ministerial Task Force to Garin Gabas in the same LGA to evacuate illegal miners from sites in mid-2013.

He, however, made it clear that stopping illegal mining, which was identified as the cause of lead poisoning, was difficult because the practice was entrenched. “It should be noted that the issue of informal mining activities started during the colonial period, and that the task of clearing over one thousand persons from sites like Angwan Maijero and Angwan Karo would not be an easy one.”

Momoh listed other efforts made by the ministry to tackle this problem as the setting up of a Ministerial Task Team to regularly monitor flash points of informal mining nationwide with the view to sensitising these categories of miners on the dangers inherent in the unsafe mining and processing of minerals, and to formalise them into mining cooperatives for easier monitoring and supervision.

“It is pertinent to state at this juncture that, while not ruling out the chances of lead poisoning as the cause of this illness in this case, it is expected that all relevant stakeholders should cooperate to see that the various intervention activities by both local and international agencies to ameliorate the current situation result in the realisation of the desired effect,” he said.

He added: “As a way of addressing the lead poisoning menace, especially after the Zamfara case, there is in place a collaborative effort with the World Bank, which began two years ago. This effort is aimed at developing a process for streamlining Artisanal and Small Scale mining activities in the country. It is thus expected that the project which the World Bank has appointed the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland to handle will help a great deal in addressing the question of artisanal and small scale mining activities in Nigeria.

“The particular activity that gave rise to this outbreak of lead poisoning, as in other cases in the past, has been as a result of the informal mining which involves the adoption of unsafe mining practices, giving little or no regards to personal health, that of the general public and the environment. This was in spite of the establishment of a Special Presidential Mines Surveillance Task Force, which the Secretary to the Government of the Federation inaugurated in June 2012 as part of the efforts to curtail the situation.”

Among the strategies recommended and which are being adopted now under Prevention, Treatment/Chelation and Remediation considerations, Momoh said, are sensitisation/awareness programmes, backfilling the open mines, identifying affected children and probably relocating them to a treatment Centre in Anka, Zamfara and the emergence of a group of experts to put up a Response and Preparedness Plan.

PoliticsThis Is What Lai Mohammed Has To Say About The Buhari’s Ministerial List by naijapips(op): 12:18pm On May 17, 2015
THE All Progressive Congress (APC) has dissociated self from purported cabinet list in circulation. The national publicity secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who spoke with The Guardian yesterday, insisted that the purported ministerial list, said to be under the scrutiny of the security agencies, “is false”, adding the party was not considering any list.

“The most important thing is getting the agenda for governance right. There are many qualified Nigerians that help in actualising the agenda and we are not interested in pulling the cart before the horse.

Frankly, ministerial list is not one of the major priorities of the party for now. You must disregard any of such list,” he said.

Urging, Governors Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, and his Jigawa State counterpart, Sule Lamed, to exercise post-election restrain, the APC frowns at recent comments by the two governors on the party and President-elect, General Muhammadu .

‘’Nigerians have switched from pre-election to post-election mode, making the unsolicited advice and the rehash of the vitriolic electioneering campaign rhetoric from the two governors totally out of tune with reality.

Our commitment to Nigeria is sacrosanct, irrespective of the state of the economy; hence we do not need any cheeky advice from the two governors.

We are not making any excuses, but we will let Nigerians and indeed the world know how much the economy has been wrecked and the role of anyone in bringing the economy to its knees,” the statement read in part.

‘’Governors Aliyu and Lamido are so bitter and traumatised that they have forgotten it was their party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that divided Nigeria along it ethnic, religious and regional fault lines.

They have forgotten that it was their party that cleaned out the commonwealth in its desperation to win at all cost, at a stage shunning the Naira for US dollars and helping to crash the value of the local currency.

‘’The governors are also imagining where they would have been now, had they not betrayed the G7 of which they were original members, seeing the group up to the starting line but cunningly refusing to take off when the race was flagged off.

They made a wrong choice and lost out, and they must live with the consequences of their choice, instead of continuing to snipe at some imaginary enemies. to rebuild Nigeria,’’ APC said.

It is no longer news that several youths have been killed in a gruesome manner in the recent cult war in Benin City, Edo State capital.

The renewed cult war, which has left a lot of casualties loitering the street of Benin has reportedly calm down following the deployment of the federal crack squad ordered by the Inspector General Police, Mr Solomon Arase.

Before the IG’s deployment of special squad, bodies of young men had littered everywhere in the metropolis.

Meanwhile, some of the cult groups have started burying their own, which they call “fallen soldiers” or “victim of war.”

Some members of the Supreme Eiye Confraternity (Bird men), popularly known for wearing blue beret, were recently pictured, burying one of their own in Benin City.

David Olukoga.

46-year-old Olukoga, is the Chairman, Edo State Committee on War Against Indiscipline and Senior Special Assistant on Youth Enhancement to the state governor.

PoliticsPDP To Recruit Atiku, kwankwaso To Contest Against Buhari In 2019 by naijapips(op): 7:05pm On May 16, 2015
■ Offers 2019 presidential ticket as bait

■ We’ll love to have them back- Party

FROM ADE ALADE AND TAIWO AMODU, ABUJA

The undying presidential ambition of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has now become the talking point among close associates of President Goodluck Jonathan who have already begun moves to woo him back into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Saturday Sun gathered that initial meetings on how to get Atiku back into the PDP fold have been held in Abuja where it was decided that “to get the former VP back into our fold (PDP), the party’s 2019 presidential ticket will be placed before him.”

A source, who attended one of the meetings, disclosed that the task of getting Atiku into the PDP has been given to the party’s Board of Trustees, BoT Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih “who is very close to Turaki (Atiku’s traditional title) and maintains a strong influence on him.”

Should Atiku decline the offer, Saturday Sun gathered, Kano State governor, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has been penciled down as a fallback option.

Asked why the PDP is gunning for Atiku who is currently a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the source, who is a trusted associate of President Jonathan, explained that the choice of the former number two citizen “is because of his presidential ambition which has come alive stronger soon after the victory of Gen Buhari at the polls, his deep pocket, his nationwide network and ability to provide leadership for the PDP across the country.”

Rather than his hope dampened by the emergence of Buhari in the April 11 presidential ambition, feelers from the camp of the former Vice President show that he has got more inspired to keep his aspiration alive. “He’s a man who believes that if Buhari can get it at the fourth time, he can also become president if given another chance to contest the presidency in 2019”, a source close to the former VP stressed.

Atiku was VP to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007 on the platform of PDP. He left the party to contest the presidency under the banner of the then South West-based Action Congress (AC) in 2007. Soon after he lost the election to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua of the PDP, he returned to the party but failed to get the party’s presidential ticket again in 2011 because the presidency had been conceded to President Jonathan who had taken over the reins of leadership following the death of Yar’Adua in 2010. When it was obvious Jonathan was going to seize the PDP presidential ticket for the 2015 poll, Atiku again moved to the main opposition party, APC where he is today being tipped as the party’s BoT Chairman, after the influential position was zoned to his North-East zone of the country. His bid to pick the APC ticket was, however, scuttled as he came third at the party’s presidential primaries held in Lagos.

“If Buhari got it at the fourth round, Atiku can also get it in his fourth attempt in 2019, that is why some of us in PDP believe he’s central to our party’s comeback to power in the next general elections”, a PDP chieftain involved in the plot to get Atiku return to the party added.

“Should all entreaties to Atiku fail, which is 98 per cent unlikely, Kwankwaso will be another viable option because of his firm grip on Kano which has always produced the largest bulk votes in recent elections. Beside this, the Kano governor though now a Senator-elect equally enjoys wider acceptability across the country like Atiku. Don’t forget he came second in the APC presidential primary despite his late entrance into the race”, the source stressed.

National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh in a telephone chat with Saturday Sun could not confirm or deny if there were intense pressures on the former Vice-President to return to the party, but noted that the national leadership of the party would be happy to have Atiku back in its fold.

According to Metuh: “I can’t confirm that because there is nothing concrete to it.

But every genuine and well-meaning member of our party would want Atiku back. He is a great mobiliser. So, why not? At this time that we are down, he is a great asset and can be a rallying figure. I think every genuine PDP member would welcome such a move.”

When contacted for reaction to the development on Wednesday, Atiku Abubakar’s spokesman, Garba Shehu pleaded with one of our reporters to allow him clarify with his boss before responding. As at the time of going to press on Friday night, no response had come from him yet.

PoliticsN9bn For Buhari’s Ministers, Lawmakers Outrageous –nigerians by naijapips(op): 9:54am On May 16, 2015
https://codedgist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/wpid-wp-1431755664024.jpeg

A cross section of Nigerians have condemned the planned payment of about N9bn as perks to ministers and lawmakers who will assume office in the government of President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), as recently reported by Saturday PUNCH.

The newspaper on May 9, 2015, in an investigative report, said lawmakers to constitute the 8th National Assembly and ministers to be appointed by Buhari would receive N9bn as perks on assumption of office.

The perks include housing, furniture and motor vehicle allowances, among others.

For instance, the housing allowance for the lawmakers is 200 per cent of their annual salaries; furniture is 300 per cent and motor vehicle loan is 400 per cent.

The report, which has been read about 40,000 times on www.punchng.com as of Friday, generated mixed reactions from the public, many of who demanded pay cut for political office holders in the country.

The readers questioned the payment of such allowances at a time the country’s revenue has dipped.

Chika Kema Junior, one of the readers, said, “All these furniture, car, whatever allowances are unnecessary. I still recommend pay as you go allowances for senators and members of the House of Representatives.

“That is, payment should be done based on sitting, and shouldn’t be more than N300, 000 for senators and N200, 000 for members of the House of Representatives.

“Minister for state positions should be scrapped immediately as they are wasteful. Ministers’ salary should not be more than N150, 000 per month. However, they can have leverage in the purchase of houses or cars since they are government servants.”

Another Nigerian, Michael Akinmola, described the allowance package for the lawmakers and ministers as “alarming” and “ridiculous.”

He said, “Are all these lawmakers living in another planet apart from the one we all live? If the answer is no, I see no reason why these salaries and allowances should not be reduced with immediate effect.

“This is one of the causes of corruption in the society. It is also one of the major reasons why politics in Nigeria has become a do or die affairs.”

Incidentally, state civil servants in many states across the country are being owed salaries following the recent fall in oil prices, fuelling the resentment felt by some Nigerians towards the allowances.

The Nigerians said it was unfair for the predominantly poor taxpayers to be funding the lavish lifestyle of political office holders.

A reader, Yetunde, described the current situation in the country as “completely outrageous.”

Her comment read, “Why should we pay for their domestic help, newspapers, entertainment, and all sorts of garbage?

“The current state of Nigerian economy can’t pay for these. I don’t see why vehicle loans should be given to any lawmaker. If they really need a car, they can approach the bank for loan. It is improper that we have to pay for the fuel and maintenance of a car that is considered personal.”

Another Nigerian, Oreagba Afolabi, wrote, “We should do away with these bogus allowances and work out something more reasonable. There should be nothing like constituency allowances.

“Let them get where they will stay (in the Federal Capital Territory). Enough of all this wastage, the common man on the street is suffering.”

Fayose-ayodele1-610x250

The victims were said to be travelling in a Toyota RAV 4 Sport Utility Vehicle to Ibadan, the Oyo State capital for a wedding, The Nation reports.

Sources revealed that the husband and children were later released while the women were taken away after their mobile phones and other valuables were seized by their captors.

The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, recently wrote a letter to the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, asking for his intervention.

The road leads to Ido Ekiti which has become notorious for kidnapping in the last two weeks.

About seven persons, including a former Chief Medical Director of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Dr Patrick Adegun, his wife, Kikelomo, a senior nurse at the Federal Teaching Hospital Ido Ekiti, Mrs Margaret Aladenika and a lecturer of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, had been kidnapped in the last two weeks in the state.

PoliticsHow Orijin Helped Diageo To Conquer Nigeria by naijapips(op): 9:28am On May 15, 2015
Orijin, made by Diageo Plc, the world’s biggest distiller, since it's introduction in 2013 has claimed more than 50 percent of the market for non-beer bottled drinks with a similar alcohol strength.

orijin

“Orijin has been hugely successful for us in Nigeria,” Chris Stagg, Diageo’s general manager for innovation, said by phone from London on May 1, declining to give sales figures as it isn’t company policy. “That’s caused us to look aggressively at how we bring this particular brand to other consumers in Africa.” The drink is now also being sold in Ghana and Kenya, he said.

A 40 percent slump in oil prices since June is expected to curb economic growth in Nigeria to 4.8 percent this year from 6.3 percent in 2014, the International Monetary Fund said on April 28. That’s had an impact on disposable incomes in Africa’s largest crude producer, with drinkers switching from Guinness to cheaper brands of beer and lager, Diageo’s Lagos-based unit Guinness Nigeria Plc said last year.

Guinness Nigeria’s net income declined to 5.2 billion naira ($26.4 million) in the nine months through March, compared with 5.9 billion naira in the same period in 2014, the company said April 24. The shares gained 3.2 percent to 160 naira as of 1.08 p.m. in Lagos, paring the year’s decline to 4.9 percent. That compares with a 0.9 percent fall on the Nigerian Stock Exchange All Share Index.

PoliticsCABINET FORMATION: South West Govs In Quandary? by naijapips(op): 9:17am On May 15, 2015
https://cdn1.vanguardngr.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/412x345xsouthwest-cat1.jpg.pagespeed.ic.Mx1esk03qe.jpg

The change of baton at the federal level, is expected to be experienced at state levels.

In the South West geo-political zone, only three governors will be inaugurated on May 29.
This is because governorship elections were conducted in only three states (Oyo, Ogun and Lagos States).

While elections were held in Ekiti and Osun States in 2014, Ondo State is slated to hold in 2016. Already in the zone, behind the scene meetings and consultations are being held to present presumed lieutenants who will help drive the agenda of the incoming administrations.
Interestingly, all the state governors in the region have embarked on the journey of dissolving their cabinet members in a bid to have a breadth of fresh air.

In a remarkable change, it is expected that while some of these state executives will make use of technocrats, others will be a mixture of technocrats and party members. In some states within the region, pundits posit that some governors will be in a state of perplexity owing to external influences, who were instrumental to their emergence as governors. Another factor that will play out in the emergence of cabinet members, is the influence of some top party leaders, who worked round the clock to ensure these governors got either elected or re-elected.

Lagos

In Lagos State, there is every likelihood that the governor-elect, Mr Akinwumi Ambode, might find his hands tied over the choice of his cabinet members.

Following the role played during the electioneering campaigns by the former governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu; Mr Ambode may find himself in a difficult situation as he has to consult Tinubu and Akiolu while forming his team.

Just like the outgoing governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola had his team allegedly put together by Asiwaju Tinubu, Ambode.

Members of the Lagos State executive are usually known to be a mixture of technocrats and party members, perhaps a repeat of this might feature in Ambode’s cabinet.

Ogun

For Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, he seems to have entered into some accord with some political bigwigs in the state with a view to accommodating them in his cabinet.

During his first term, Amosun was accused of injecting technocrats in his cabinet to the detriment of party members who worked for his emergence.

However, this development did not go down well with some top-notch of the party, who felt aggrieved and left the fold.

Oyo

For breaking the second term jinx, Governor Abiola Ajimobi will be giving preference to elders and leaders in the state in his cabinet, who worked for his victory at the polls.

Though, feelers from the Agodi Government House suggests that there is perceived tension looming over the possible dissolution of Ajimobi’s cabinet.

In 2011, some leaders and elders from the state presented names of their stooges to Ajimobi for consideration in his cabinet.

Expectedly, in the new cabinet to be formed, the likes of the Alaafin of Oyo, the Arisekola family, late Lam Adesina, Oba Odulana, are perceived to have slots in the new cabinet.

Ondo

It is evident that palpable tension has set in following speculations that governor Olusegun Mimiko before May 29 may disband his cabinet.

Following his return to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, there is the likelihood that Mimiko will be injecting both technocrats and political hirelings into his cabinet.

Osun

Already, the Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has dissolved his cabinet and is expected to present the names of the nominees to the State House of Assembly.

In his first term, Aregbesola went for young technocrats of Osun origin, scattered in all parts of the world, among them were university scholars and other professionals.

This time, the governor will be taking into consideration some All Progressives Congress, APC, bigwigs, who have distinguished themselves in recent times.

These chieftains are already pushing for a slot to be allocated to them in the Aregbesola cabinet.

Ekiti State

There is already a running battle in Ekiti State where 19 lawmakers elected on the platform of the APC are frowning with Governor Ayo Fayose’s alleged impunity.

The Speaker, Dr Adewal Omirin had accused the governor of encouraging six PDP lawmakers to screen commissioners and Special Advisers for Fayose’s cabinet. Though the commissioners have set out to work but Omirin and his colleagues have described their appointment null and void.

Good hands are everywhere—Igbokwe

Speaking on the composition of cabinet members across the South west especially for Lagos State, the Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Engineer Joe Igbokwe said “anybody that is good, should fit into government. You can find them everywhere, they can be technocrats or politicians. They can also be captains of industries, they are everywhere. Whoever that can do the job should be invited because there are good people everywhere but only the best is good for Lagos State.”

PoliticsDear Trekkers, Here Are 5 Other Things You Can Do For Buhari/gej by naijapips(op): 8:51pm On May 14, 2015
Dear trekkers, move on already!

https://i0.wp.com/media./media/UARIRijPRlumI/giphy.gif?resize=573%2C337

There is more to life than going through a worthless stress and self punishment of trekking miles just to congratulate and shake hands with the outgoing president Goodluck Jonathan/ incoming president, Buhari?

Someone has got to hit the nail on the head, so here’s the hard truth, they probably don’t even know you exist.

And even if they read about it in the media, they most likely go bleh, laugh over it and say ‘What is wrong with these people? Are they that jobless?”

Puh-lease.

1. Surf the Internet

Apparently, it is only jobless people that are doing this trekking nonsense. We understand that Jobs are scarce but rather than waste your precous time on the road, why not spend it online sourcing for job openings and more interesting stuffs, like keeping up with the News.

Nah, don’t give the excuse of not being tech savy.

We know many of you are.

Especially Oladele[1] who keeps giving us a minute-by-minute update of his journey on twitter, even the hero, Suleimab kept giving us updates via facebook.

2. Do something charitable

Why not divert all the trekking energy into something more impactful. You could raise funds and carry out a special donation for charity or a good cause. Start a foundation in their honour.

Visit an orphanage home, help them clean up for the day and when asked why, tell them you are doing it in honour of Buhari/GEJ. Render free home services in your neighbourhood, wash cars for free, blah blah and let the receivers know why you are doing it.

Believe us, you will even be more celebrated when the photos storm the internet.

You think that’s less fun?

Then spoil you!

Take yourself on a special treat to celebrate their victory/loss, eat something different from your usual fod routine…and yes, please post the photos/selfies online and don’t forget to add that you did it in honour of ……………..(fil the gap), you will become famous in no time when the blogs stumble on ém.

P.S The nursing mum of a forty days old baby who began her trekking exercise barely twenty four hours ago could decide to cook something special for her family that day or do something she has not done in a while for her home.

3. Go to the studio

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CE9BdG3WgAAZw8q.jpg
Go release a song for these political gods, and if you cannot afford a studio session, do it with your phone, record a song of victory in their honour, send it to your friends and keep sharing with others, upload it to youtube and voila, peeps would see it.

You could even do a video of you dancing, or rapping in their honour, wouldn’t that be awesome?

Blogs would be the first to report what you did.

You would see headlines like ‘Look what a Buhari/Gej fan just recorded to honour him, you like?’

And God help you, the song should be loved, you automatically become a star. Ask Korede Bello.

4. Write a letter

You could also write a congratulatory letter and post it on Nairaland or send it to one of the famous online portals, like YNaija.

Boom!

5. Learn something

If you are not sure of what to do with your life right time, learn a skill or two or more. Invest that ”trekking time’ into a business. By the time you are telling your grass to grace to story when you become accomplished in that trade or skill, you can always say Ï was inspired by these men and look what I have accomplished today.

Oh, none of this is fine for you?

Then, sleep.

https://i1.wp.com/media./media/Ks77XWQDACUgg/giphy.gif?resize=584%2C400

Sleeping is time wasting, but it’s healthier than embarking on a trek that could expose you to blisters, sun burn, rape (for the ladies) and even armed robbers or more dangers.

The next witness, Walter Olaka, steps out to testify.

He says he is into community peace-keeping and currently the youth president of Ogale community.

He says he is a member of the APC.

"On the 28th of March, while I was at Unit 2, there was this complaint that since the result sheet is not available, some group of PDP members want to force pressure on voters to commence voting.

"I went there with the peace-keeping team and saw that they were actually demanding for result sheet. While I was still there, some PDP people came towards us.

"I heard one making a call saying that the youth president is here. After that phone call, not up to 30 minutes, we saw about three Hilux coming towards the market street with full headlight.

"When those people came out, first thing they did was they started shooting. We actually moved back. Since they didn't make harm in their shooting, we now went closer.

He says when they were moving closer, a soldier opened fire on them, shooting one Chris Nneji who was beside him.

"Initially when we ran away, those boys that made call moved closer to the hilux and were discussing with them."

"The person that was in that Hilux was Honourable Olaka Nwogu. I called the police that we just wanted to ask for result sheet and this is our experience."

He says after Chris was shot, he informed Inside Eleme, a newspaper, the DPO of Eleme, and the paramount ruler about the incident.

"The DPO sent Inspector Monday to the place. He told me he would be going back to the DPO to give him the report.

"What the police did was the DPO came in a Hilux and carried the deceased to Last Home mortuary. The corpse is still in the mortuary."

He says on April 16th, he was at home when a crowd of people came. "My sister and brother escaped gunshots. They were asking 'where is Presido?' They damaged the house windows."

He says they came the day Nyesom Wike was announced as winner of the governorship election.

He tenders photographs of damaged of his house, adding that they took away two motorcycles.

He says he knows Olaka Nwogu as a one time Chairman of Eleme local government.

"I know that anytime he comes into a contest, there must be a serious contest, by using intimidation and shooting of gun. That has been his style.

"In 2002, when he was in the House of Reps, I know he brought out a style by using J.O Nwogu who went around burning peoples' houses. Olaka has so much influence on military men.

He says J.O was the Eleme youth leader at the time.

"The police are with them that you don't have any room for questioning."

He says there has always been violence during elections in Eleme.

He says he would appreciate if the Commission can investigate the issues in Eleme and bring perpetrators to justice.

"Because of what happened, there was no election in Ogale."

Loveday Obare, Counsel to Eleme local government area, says he would call three witnesses

The first witness, Marcus Tetenwi, says he resides in Alesa-Eleme. He says he is the Chief Protocol Officer of Eleme local government area.

He says he is a member of the APC.

He says that on March 28th, there was a controversy as to the result sheets and moments later, three Hilux vans drove into the area with soldiers and one Olaka Nwogu, who was inside one of the the vehicles, pointed at him.

He says he quickly ran to his home, wanted to use his car, thought against it, and ran away; returning later to see that the soldiers who had followed him riddled the vehicle with bullets. He says he called a photographer and journalists to cover the incident.

He says he heard several gunshots from where he was hiding.

He tenders before the Commission a photo of his vehicle after the gunshots

"That very day, they (Mr. Nwogu and armed men) actually took over the whole scenario with military men by intimidating and harassing people.

"They were chasing me because I was demanding for the result sheet."

He says Mr. Nwogu have "evil antecedents" in Alesa-Eleme community.

"I was hiding inside my house when they were shooting at my vehicle. My mum and other women came out shouting 'do you want to kill him like you have been killing others.' I think that made him to relent and they went away."

He says a lot of persons were also demanding to see the result sheet on that election day.

"They wanted to commence the election in the absence of the result sheet, but I insisted that if there was no result sheet there would be no election day."

He says the polling unit is about 300 metres from his home. He says his assailants were wearing military uniforms but he does not if they were actual soldiers.

He says he only complained to his party and not the police. "Because during that election, some of us were scared because there is conspiracy between the police and the military men to work with Olaka Nwogu."

He says Mr. Nwogu belongs to the PDP.

He says he became Chief Protocol Officer in 2008 and was not a member of a political party at the time. He says he joined the APC in 2013.

He says he doesn't know if there were cult groups in Eleme.

"Olaka Nwogu should be questioned because there is no time he is vying for position that violence that does not happen. He has a lot of pending cases all over the place."

PoliticsBuhari Approves Plan To Set Up Special Courts For Handling Tax Evasion by naijapips(op): 8:31pm On May 14, 2015
According to a report by National Mirror[1], president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, has reportedly approved plans to have special courts for hearing tax evasion and corruption cases.

The courts will be set up in FCT and will deal with the aforementioned cases involving companies, individuals and government officials.

“We are confident that these courts will give accelerated hearing to tax evasion cases and other cases bothering on corruption,” he said.

Etok expressed optimism that the courts, when established, will take off the burden of such cases from the regular courts and give them accelerated hearing. He said that members of the House of Representatives and coalition of senators have already gotten approval from the president-elect to set up the courts.

He also revealed that the National Assembly is currently probing about 115 tax offenders.
