The current system has created a parasitic mentality. Both on the populace and leaders.

Standing5:
Obasanjo tried banning imported goods but it never worked.
Reasons:
1) Weak dollar subsidy system:- people kept circumventing the dollar restriction and went outside to the very goods that where banned e.g toothpick.
2) Porour borders:- smuggler saw banned items as hot cake. It favoured them as the borders where poorly manned.
3) Custom :- officials are corrupt and do collude with.
We need a more thorough overhaul.
The same question will still be thrown to him... which plan did he take before banning, afterall every business is to make profit. If assuming there's a shift with the support from the government taken note of the ratio to importation. It is that percentage that will be take into consideration as to how to reduce the importation or better it will reduce by itself because if more goods are been produced to satisfy the people with abundant left then who will want to import that particular product

California is the 6th largest economy in the world. It's economy is larger than that of France or Brazil. The little problem is that California is not a country. It is a State in the United States of America. It has little offshore oil, yet its economy is larger than States in the US that are famous for their oil reserves, like Texas. California generates much of its revenue from non-oil products. It found a way to absorb and domesticate much of the intellectual output from its premier university, Stanford University, into saleable products within its economy.

As a matter of fact, much of California's economy is built around Stanford University. So with this, Silicon valley developed. I'm sure you've heard of Silicon Valley at least once in your life. Now with Silicon Valley came companies like Apple, eBay, Cisco, Lockheed, Hewlett Packard (HP), Google, Netflix, Facebook, Oracle, Tesla...and the list goes on and on ad infinitum. These are multibillion-dollar companies. The yearly budget of any one of these companies might be larger than the entire yearly budget of, say for example, Akwa Ibom State. I'm taking about companies that are richer than countries. They are all in California. But that is just in the technology industry where the technologies and inventions spewing out of Stanford are caught midair and converted to money spinning enterprises.

But there is also the entertainment industry in California. Yes, Hollywood is in California. The US movies industry contributes about $504Billion to USA's GDP. Hollywood, as you know, contributes over 70% of that figure. Most iconic movie studios are in Hollywood. As a matter of fact, the "Big Eight" consisting of 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer), Paramount Pictures, RKO Radio Pictures, United Artists, Universal Studios and Warner Bros are, or were, all in Hollywood. These again, are multi-billion dollar companies generating revenue for California.

Despite the above, California also thrives on agriculture. As at 2014, California had nothing less than 77,000 farms and ranches raking in about $55Billion in revenue yearly. It produces over 400 agricultural commodities, a large chunk of which it exports. It is the leader in producing exotic fruits in America. Its wine industry is unique. California wine is drunk with relish the world over. I used to drink some too.

This is just one State in America. You see, California actually had a choice of sitting back and striving to get a piece of the revenue generated from Texas' oil. It could have depended solely on Federal allocation to survive so that every month end, it will send its Commissioner of Finance to Washington DC to receive monthly allocation so that it can barely pay salaries of its workers and nothing more. Then San Francisco would resemble Ajegunle in Lagos. And there certainly would not be those beautiful sights and sounds that make California what it is today. But No, not California. Not America. California gives to the center and, because of its wealth, despises the idea of depending on it for survival. The Federal Government actually needs California to survive, not the other way round.

You see, America is structured in such a way that States must look inwards to exploit their wealth for the good of its citizens. There is no free lunch for the lazy States. There certainly is no commonwealth. But there is your wealth, if you can create it. Under American Federalism, you are the captain of your ship. But again, you are also the waves upon which the ship will sail. That is America. The local government, the government closest to the grassroot, is deliberately made the strongest level of government. Items like Variances (adaptation of state law to local conditions,) Public works (yes, public works!!), Contracts for public works, Licensing of public accommodations, Assessable improvements, Basic public services are all left for local county governments to handle. The State handles weightier m

As a nation We can't just be banning stuff without plans or using our mouth to "diversify to agriculture" Without putting in actions and creating a value chain
PoliticsRe: Banning Of Importation Of Goods Totally Have An Effect Toward The Growth Of The by Naimolawale(op): 5:58pm On Sep 03, 2016
It's a two way thing ... I think for us to ban something, what internal structures have we put in place to replace what we've banned ? What effort are we making to prevent widespread suffering and avoidable scarcity ? The government should have built up local industries and invest heavily in getting the local ones off the ground and gradually wean us off dependence on outside goods or imports But out here, we love to ban, but no organized internal action to prevent the shocks of banning and also start production on a national scale to cover up. Our leaders feel that banning would solve the problem , or leaving the economy on auto pilot , or that entrepreneurs would create something is going to fundamentally solve the problem . ... This is what's called "laissez faire". For example (just making this up) : We've been importing 70% of our rice ... We decided to ban imports of rice ... 30% can't cover the country, scarcity begins, smugglers and other profiteers take advantage of the situation , life gets unbearable for the masses. And we keep struggling and complaining while rice price skyrockets.. Now picture this... We import 70% of our rice, Govt has plans to ban rice imports, it organizes rice growers all over Nigeria , figures out a way of supplying them machinery and needed tools for production , govt takes charge of buying all the rice from them, gets the data and compares it to import ratio & all.. Them with this , govt can start to measure what percentage it would ban while increasing rice productivity .. In such a way that transition won't cause shocks in internal rice price .. And with time since production and consumption is local , it'll be very cheap.. & we are well fed .. Actions must be planned. When farmers know there is a national govt that is going to buy the harvest, then it's green light all d way ... As a nation We can't just be banning stuff without plans or using our mouth to "diversify to agriculture" Without putting in actions and creating a value chain........... by sunki

In as much as I detest nepotism and cronyism a lot, I wouldn't let sentiments becloud my sense of objective reasoning. In governance, one has to sometimes take decisions irrespective of people's opinion.

Would I say because I'm in a position of authority and deny
-my relative(s) from bidding for public contracts even though they are qualified?
-my friend his entitled promotion when he's due coz the public/press would raise alarm
-close friends appointments if I feel they are qualified.

Are my relatives or friends not Nigerians too who have rights to vie for public office and to be appointed into public services (if qualified)?

We've seen some governors appoint their very intelligent classmates in the college or university coz they feel they'd be useful in their government, does that mean they are partial here?

So far due process is followed and they are qualified, let the press shout, it's their problem.

NB: before you shout I'm an APC apologist, remember Seriake Dickson's cousin/brother, Ben Ayade's brother, GEJ's cousin & EFCC,Professor Nahzeem Mimiko, younger brother to Governor was the VC of Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State.

Very unintelligible response to NBS and reality on ground.

You think people don't know the truth.

Inflation has increased
Price of all commodities has increased(some by 50-100%)
Transport fares has increased across the board.
Manufacturing has decreased.
Importation has reduced.

This is clueless government.. no straight path at all
When some individuals talk, they sound naïve. They think we don't know. It is very unfortunate.

Most commentators condemning the government on this forum are economic olodos, no thanks to the numerous textbook economists hellbent on misinforming the generality of the members of the public.

The first thing they usually say to misinform members of the public is to cry that the present administration has no economic team and that the government is not doing anything.

Any honest and intelligent person knows that when an airplane is on a downward trajectory and the right thing has been done to change its direction in upward direction, that the aircraft will not change direction immediately. It will still go in the downward direction for some time before changing direction upward.

We are in that phase of change of direction right now. Things will get worse before they get better whether anybody like it or not. We are reaping what we sow by refusing to collectively condemn the government of former President Jonathan when he was busy mismanaging the economy.

Change takes time. All we need right now is patience and support and encouragement for the present administration.

Contrary to the loud cry of supposedly well educated people who have been misinforming the general public about the economic policies of this government, the government have actually been doing a lot to better the lives of Nigerian people. The result will not be immediate. Instead of focusing on the positives , of which Nigerians will soon begin to reap the benefits, they chose instead to focus on the unavoidable negatives.

A lot is going on in governments efforts to diversify the economy, especially in the area of Agriculture, mining and manufacturing. Rice production have reached 50% of local requirement from barely 10% before this government came into being, and is expected to reach 100% in the next twelve months. Other agricultural products such as maize , wheat and sugar are also coming up.

Mining is also coming up.More income is coming in from mining though not sufficiently enough yet. A lot of investment is being attracted into mining as we speak .A coal mining company is expected to begin operations in Kogi state in September. A new money spinning solid mineral- nickel have just been discovered in Kaduna and the government is also seriously looking into developing other solid minerals scattered all over the country.

In manufacturing, the government has placed a ban on not less than 41 products in order to encourage local production of those products, and as well to prevent a quick and terrible slide in our foreign exchange rate. The situation would have been worse than it is right now had the government not taken this bold initiative.Perhaps we would have been talking about N1000 for $1 right now. Those who complain about the ban don't know this, while those who should know are busy misinforming the people. Imagine what the country will look like right now had the government not ban the products. Even the companies complaining would still no be able to function under such situation.

What we as a people need to do right now is to ask ourselves what we can do in our personal capacity to help in building the economy. While some people are crying and complaining, there lots of people taking the advantages the current economic crises is providing, and using it to better their lives and build their future. Where do you stand. Rise up brother. Stretch youselve beyond your current limit. Come up with ideas. Get people to invest in it. Play your own part and stop whining.

I also want to use this medium to appeal to the government to make adequate and up to date information about its activities and the state of theeconomy in general available to members of the public as most members of the public are unaware of what is going on.

A
Well you've said qiet the truth but telling me all these is meaningless with no valid proof to show. i totally agree to all your comment here which have read in most papers. I am not a fan of jona nor Buhari... all want is the best from any God sent Leader. Now tell me during jona regime we have corruption which was at a high standard and we the citizens know but so far everyone can met ends or still getting some little change. We ignore the corruption fact and the economy was not like this. Buhari came in with a different idea about corruption and other related activities. Tell me can corruption be eradicated completely?. what was his agenda when coming to power.. is it to stop corruption or find a way forward?.He stopped the importation of some goods to improve Local ones. Nice move but at what expense?.. To me he is not being truthful enough.A country that is having devaluation in currency subsides dollar for pilgrimage both muslims and Christians. Beware am a muslim. At a normal rate and leaving the business, marketers to buy dollar at an abnormal rate. Tell me is it subsiding dollar for pilgrimage that will solve our problems? . As a business man. , tell me with the ignorance of the leader to appreciate the local product our own.. what will you go for, importation or domestic product? . Be sincere.
How can you expect a businessman to venture into local product when we the citizens nd Leaders dont appreciate. Well everyone has his/her to play but the government should stop deceiving and telling Lies upon Lies..
Lets No where we are heading to, not telling us what hes doing. There should be sign . positivity. not hardship to the unbearable maximum.

No More Silence
Let this be a warning that Nigerian Youths will no longer fold their hands; we shall protect and defend our fundamental and constitutional rights. Our leaders must explain why they did not improve education, why electricity becomes worse when they leave than when they took office, why our roads remains in an acute states of despair, why people still go to Nigerian hospitals to die while they travel abroad to treat themselves

We all make the Decisions
We've gone pass the military era, unilaterally making of decisions is not acceptable to Nigerians. We have degree holders driving taxis and working as low-level security guards. A country is the people, an entity, a concept. We say no to a Nigeria where politics is ultimately about power!. To be a Nigerian is to love yourself and where you came from, though this is not the case when it comes to the latest political parties in Nigeria

Our Intelligence
Enough!
Of the deliberate policy of exclusion being pursued at the highest echelon of government against the Nigerian youth. The Nigerian youth are assigned ministers who are in their 60s and who have no idea of what the average Nigerian youth is passing through. The generator generation, we know who we are, we have been sick and tired of the loud vibrations for a long time. But sadly it's our gift from the generation before us. A generation that failed us, one that gave us no hope but bigger and bigger generators. When my computer teacher in primary school still has to be my child's teacher - No way! No!

Our Collective Voices
It's time for youths to arise and make their voice count. It's time to shout at the top of our voice and say enough is enough. It's time to reinstate believe in ourselves as youths. It's time to see possibilities become possible. It's time to wake from slumber into real life. It's time to forget the past and redefine the future of this nation.
That time is now! When we'll arise and be leaders as promised us, because the future is counting on us. When we recognise our collective voice that's when we'll be taken seriously. Nigeria belongs to us all.
