Crime / Man Arrested In Ondo After Alleged Sexual Abuse Of 8-year-old Daughter by nairavsdollars(f): 11:34am On Jun 29 |
The Ondo state police command has dragged a 35 year old herb seller, Taiwo Mufutau, before an Akure family Magistrate court, for allegedly, defiling his 8 year old biological daughter. Mufutau was arraigned on a single charge of rape, a violation of Section 25(a) of the Ondo State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law of 2021. The police prosecutor, Martins Olowofeso, informed the court that “the defendant was apprehended on June 18, 2004, following a report made to the Anti-kidnapping Unit at Alagbaka about the inappropriate relationship between him and his daughter. Olowofeso said that the defendant was subsequently detained for further investigation. The charge sheet reads: “That you, Mufutau Taiwo, 35, male, on June 5, 2024, at about 4:pm at No. 40 Egbe-Road, Ayedun Quarters, Akure, did have carnal knowledge of your daughter, (name withheld), aged 8 years old, of the same address, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 25(a) of the Ondo State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law 2021.” The Police prosecutor, told the court that Taiwo and his wife, ran away from their house after the crime and went to Osun State to obtain a fake doctor’s report claiming that nothing happened to the girl. Olowofeso, added that the Police Investigating Officer(IPO), conducted another test in Akure, which revealed that there was penetration and the girl had been bleeding for three days. According to him, the defendant confessed to the alleged crime during questioning by the investigating officer. The plea of the defendant was not taken due to the nature of the offence. Olowofeso, through an application, urged the court to remand the defendant at the Olokuta Correctional Centre pending the issuance of advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP). But counsel to the defendant, G.O. Omoedu, informed the court that his client was just served and that he would need some time to respond on points of law. Omoedu therefore, urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him reply to the remand application. In her ruling, the trail Magistrate, B.A. Alipohul ordered that the defendant be remanded in police custody. Alipohul thereafter, adjourned the case till July 4, 2024, for hearing. https://thescrutinyng.com/index.php/2024/06/29/man-arrested-in-ondo-after-alleged-sexual-abuse-of-8-year-old-daughter/ |

Politics / I Was Called A Genocidal Bleep In Presence Of My Children- Suella Braverman by nairavsdollars(f): 11:24am On Jun 26 |
Former home secretary Suella Braverman has told the BBC she still has the 24-hour personal protection she was given while in government because of the threats and harassment she receives. On a recent trip to a supermarket, she said people called her “a genocidal bleep” in front of her children. The government announced a £31m budget for security for politicians in February. The extra money follows the murder of MPs Jo Cox in 2016 and Sir David Amess in 2021. For the first time, all election candidates now have access to panic alarms and a named police contact to liaise with on security matters. All requests for help are assessed by the Home Office within 24 hours, according to government sources. It comes as there is a growing sense of fear among politicians about violent attacks. Ms Braverman told BBC Radio 4’s The Deadly Business of Democracy that the incident at the supermarket was “aggressive, abusive and intimidatory and harassing” and she was followed to the checkouts. “It’s obviously about the issue to do with Israel and Hamas. And a couple of people came very close up to me. They said ‘Hey, this is Suella Braverman. You’re a genocidal bleep’.” She said the people calling her names then phoned their friends to join in the abuse, but she was able to be insulated by her security and the situation was defused. Pro-Palestinian activists also found out where her husband worked and sent him abusive phone messages, she said. Feeling passionate about an issue is no excuse for violence, she added “It’s not an excuse to tell someone you’re going to kill them or rape them or kill their child.” It’s also “incredibly offensive” to suggest that she’s brought this kind of abuse on herself by being outspoken, she said. “I’ve never incited violence. I’ve never threatened to attack anybody. I’ve never encouraged anybody to be violent. I have set out very legitimate views, about political issues because I’m a politician and it’s my job to do so.” https://thescrutinyng.com/index.php/2024/06/26/i-was-called-a-genocidal-bleep-in-presence-of-my-children-suella-braverman/

Politics / Tinubu Should Take Governance Lessons From Burkina Faso President - Okurounmu by nairavsdollars(f): 9:25am On Jun 25 |
Senator Femi Okurounmu, a chieftain of Afenifere has described President Bola Tinubu's policies in the last one year as disastrous and disappointing. Speaking in an interview with PUNCH, Okurounmu advised Tinubu to travel to Burkina Faso and take governance lessons from the president, Captain Ibrahim Traoré who took power during a coup d'état on 30 September 2022. He said Nigerians will applaud Tinubu if he can imitate the Burkinabe president. " Tinubu’s policies are disastrous and disappointing; my advice for him is that he should go to Burkina Faso and take a lesson from their President. That one is governing the way an African leader should govern. If he can imitate him, we shall all start clapping". Okurounmu, a member of the 2014 national conference said the Tinubu administration did not handle the issues of fuel subsidy removal and naira float well. "The present government did not handle it well at all. For one thing, a politician must always be consistent, and when he has to change his mind, he must let the people know why he has changed his mind". "Throughout the time that (Goodluck) Jonathan was the President, Tinubu was one of the leaders of those demonstrating against Jonathan when he wanted to remove fuel subsidy. Tinubu, Wole Soyinka, (Tunde) Bakare, and a number of them, were all demonstrating, carrying placards, carrying coffins, and so on against Jonathan for his attempt to remove fuel subsidy". "So, if he now thinks that there are different factors why he has to change his mind, he should let the country know; he should explain to us, instead of just coming and arbitrarily saying fuel subsidy is gone with just one sentence. With his fuel subsidy is gone announcement, he has created an inflationary crisis for the country because the price of fuel affects the price of almost everything". "The President removed subsidy not only from fuel; he also removed subsidy from electricity, and everything is now expensive. It has rubbished our currency; it has increased poverty in the land, a lot of people can no longer afford food items, even the common everyday foodstuffs are no longer affordable; rice, beans, tomatoes, and onions, among others". https://thescrutinyng.com/index.php/2024/06/25/tinubu-should-take-governance-lessons-from-traore-burkina-faso-president-okurounmu/ 1 Like

Business / First Bank Directors Accuse EFCC Of Cover-up In Petition Against Ex- MD, Adedunt by nairavsdollars(f): 6:41am On Jun 10 |
First Bank Directors Accuse EFCC Of Cover-Up In Petition Against Ex- MD, Adeduntan Some directors of First Bank have accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of failure to act on the petition they wrote against the immediate past Managing Director of the bank, Adesola Adeduntan. Adeduntan, whose tenure was to officially end on December 31, 2024 suddenly tendered his resignation on April 20, 2024 and proceeded on retirement leave. Speaking with TheScrutinyNG, a credible source in the bank said there was a $60m fraud which happened in the Compliance department of First Bank under Adeduntan’s leadership. He said this was one of the reasons why the former MD was forced to resign. “During that period the bank was also in debt to the tune of N700 billion. So, the bank was in a serious financial mess during that period According to him, when Adeduntan was asked to resign and go quietly, a decision he quickly complied with, some of the directors petitioned the EFCC to launch a probe into some of the infractions that took place under his leadership. They also attached evidence and asked the anti-graft agency to summon him, but nothing has been done about it. “I am aware that some directors wrote a petition to the CBN, while others wrote to the EFCC. Till now, the EFCC failed to act on the matter and I haven’t heard any news that the man was invited” he said. When our correspondent contacted the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, he promised to verify from the investigations department and get back. He failed to do so after a week while calls to his mobile phone were not answered. Shedding more light on the FirstBank crisis, a former director in the CBN said there are many contending forces battling for the soul of the bank, with each using the influence they have to pull the bank in the direction they wanted. “There are many factions in FirstBank and the way many in the financial sectors refer to the bank is ‘the bank of powers and principalities. There is a faction belonging to Femi Otedola, the current chairman of the bank. There is another faction loyal to Oba Otudeko, a former chairman of Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria Holdings. Don’t also forget Ibukun Awosika, Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria Limited. Mike Adenuga of Globacom is also a major shareholder in the bank”. “Each of these people have one agenda or the other and they use their connections in the Presidency and CBN to get things done in their favour. If you recall, in April 2021, some former directors at a board meeting of the bank had voted for Adeduntan to be retired as his second term was to expire”. “Some people in the fingered Otudeko and Awosika as the brain behind it. However, those who wanted him to remain in the position used their connection with former CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele to sack the board and made Adeduntan retain his position”. “Now that Emefiele is gone and Cardoso is in charge, those against Adeduntan were able to use their connection to get him out. The current MD, Olusegun Alebiosu who took over from Adeduntan will also be watching his back”. https://thescrutinyng.com/index.php/2024/06/10/first-bank-directors-accuse-efcc-of-cover-up-in-petition-against-ex-md-adeduntan/

Politics / N80.2bn Fraud: Suspense As Yahaya Bello Appears For Trial Next Week by nairavsdollars(f): 8:05pm On Jun 06 |
After weeks of hide-and-seek game, Yahaya Bello, former governor of Kogi has confirmed that he will appear in court next week in the hearing of the N80.2bn fraud charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). A member of the former governor’s legal team who confirmed the development to TheScrutinyNG on Thursday said Bello has given the assurance that he will be at the Federal High Court, Abuja on June 13,the new date fixed for the trial. Bello, popularly called ‘The White Lion’ by his loyalists has been in hiding since April 17 when officials of the EFCC barricaded his house to arrest him. The anti-graft agency said the current Kogi governor, Usman Ododo smuggled Bello out of the building in his official car. It later issued a public notice declaring Bello wanted. On April 23, the court ordered the EFCC to serve Bello with the money laundering charges against him through his lawyer. When the matter came up on May 10, Justice Emeka Nwite ruled that the application filed by the EFCC, that no application be heard without the defendant being in court, was meritorious. He therefore ordered Yahaya Bello to appear in court on the day of the next trial. Responding, Abdulwahab Mohammed, lead counsel for Yahaya Bello, asked the court to give him four weeks to search for his client, saying his whereabouts remain unknown. When asked by our correspondent if Bello will appear in court next week, one of the lawyers handling the case replied in the affirmative. “He has agreed to show up. We have convinced him to do so” he said. On Bello’s fears that the EFCC may arrest him court if he attends the trial, the lawyer said he strongly believes that the anti-graft agency will show respect for the rule of law and will not do so. “The reason why the EFCC invaded his residence was because they wanted to charge him to court. If he appears as he has promised to do, there won’t be any need for anyone to arrest him at the premises of the court. It is court that will decide whether he is guilty or not” he said. https://thescrutinyng.com/index.php/2024/06/06/n80-2bn-fraud-suspense-as-yahaya-bello-appears-for-trial-next-week/

Politics / Atiku Accuses Tinubu's Govt Of Diverting Funds Through Secret Petrol Subsidy by nairavsdollars(f): 2:35pm On Jun 06 |
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, has accused the Bola Tinubu administration of diverting public funds through petrol subsidy, hence the refusal of the government to reveal how much is being spent on subsidy. Atiku said this in a statement on Thursday in reaction to a statement from the presidency. The former Vice President said the clandestine subsidy regime was one of the reasons investments in the oil sector had refused to come in. He said, “Tinubu has brought the shady nature of running Lagos to the federal level. He claims subsidy is gone but his Special Adviser on Energy, Olu Verheijen, says they are intervening from time to time while his Finance Minister, Wale Edun, described subsidy removal as an ‘ongoing process’. A document authored by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy revealing how much subsidy is being paid is now being disowned by the very authors of the document. “Both the World Bank and the IMF have revealed in separate reports that Nigeria is still paying petrol subsidies, but the Tinubu government refuses to come clean. Even a senior member of the APC had revealed that subsidy was beyond paid. “For a man who claims to be on a mission to attract foreign direct investment, it is ironic that he cannot see that his policy flip flops and lies are capable of dissuading investors. He must come clean on this subsidy issue since he doubles as petroleum minister. The Tinubu administration should be courageous enough to own their policies and outcome with their full chest and responsible enough to be accountable for their actions to Nigerians." This denial lends credence that money meant for the Federation Account, which ought to be shared to states and local governments, is being diverted without any form of accountability whatsoever. There is a need for the National Assembly to get to the bottom of the matter rather than focusing on frivolous issues. “The National Assembly needs to be alive to its responsibilities, especially in the area of oversight. Posterity will not be kind to members of the National Assembly if they continue to look the other way while daylight robbery is taking place,” the former Vice President said. https://thescrutinyng.com/index.php/2024/06/06/atiku-accuses-tinubu-administration-of-diverting-funds-through-secret-petrol-subsidy/
