Nairaland / General / Ukraine: Nans Southwest Condemns Delay In Evacuation Of Nigerians by NANSogun: 10:33pm On Feb 24, 2022
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS.
NANS SOUTHWEST (ZONE D).

PRESS RELEASE.

UKRAINE: NANS SOUTHWEST CONDEMNS DELAY IN EVACUATION OF NIGERIANS

As the assault on the Ukraine territory by Russian forces continue unabated, it's apparent that a conscientious and proactive government would have swiftly executed an emergency rescue operation of her citizens.
Regardless of which side of the divide the nation chose to pitch its diplomatic tent, the welfare, security and safe evacuation of citizens in danger zones should be of utmost priority.

Unfortunately, the over 4,227 Nigerian Students and many other Nigerians who were forced to seek qualitative education and more gratifying source of livelihood due to the national economic comatose have been failed yet again.
TIMES published how the Nigerian embassy in Ukraine on thursday released a statement saying Nigerians in Ukraine should essentially defend themselves.
As shared by Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) on twitter, Nigerian embassy in Ukraine asked Nigerians in Ukraine to be "responsible for their personal security and safety."

While India is still evacuating its students, U.S., Canada and Australia have evacuated most of their citizens from Ukraine.
It is however disheartening that as at now, there is no concrete plan to ensure the transportation of Nigerian nationals from the country or to atleast take responsibility for their safety within the country.

The embassy which is practically demonstrating mental impoverishment is indeed a mirror of the incompetencies in most of the Federal Government agencies.
They seem to be committed to doing the barest minimum to earn their paycheck.
How else can we explain the unwillingness of the commission to do as little as write letter to schools to shift their lectures online so Nigerian students can go back home before the case worsen?
Nigerian students in Ukraine had asked the diplomacy office for the letter when the schools informed them that it's a requirement.
Rather than emulating India and other countries by making such letter available, the gross incompetency and unnecessary bureaucratic practices had stifled them from doing so.

It is even more mind-boggling that the Presidency have failed to make public any decisive decisions on this quagmire.
More than ever, the Nigeria's government need to showcase how much the sanctity and sacredness of the citizens' life mean to them through a well thought out and practicable plan. This is not a time to be shocked or for condolences but a time for definite actions.

In a development that may lead to the much needed relief, the Federal House of Representatives at its plenary in Abuja on Thursday, had directed the Majority Leader, Hon. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, and the Chairman, Committee on Foreign Affairs, Hon. Yusuf Buba, to proceed to Ukraine by Friday (tomorrow).
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, had asked the two lawmakers to immediately liaise with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Intelligence Agency and the management of Air Peace to facilitate the commencement of the evacuation.

While we hope that this exercise will successfully bring all Nigerian nationals in Ukraine to safety, we must however commend the legislative house for making an attempt at proactiveness.
In addition, we charge them to implement their plans speedily and effectively to dodge needless casualties.
Our thoughts and prayers are with every Nigerians within the shores of Ukraine.

JOINT PRESS RELEASE

January 11th, 2022.

NANS, NAOSS MOURNS ERNEST SHONEKAN, CALLS FOR HIS IMMORTALIZATION

The leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students, Ogun Axis and the National Secretariat of National Association of Ogun State Students mourns the passing of a nationalist and moral compass; Chief Ernest Shonekan.

Earlier today, we received with grief, the passing of Chief Ernest Shonekan who headed the Interim National Government that succeeded the military junta of General Ibrahim Babangida.

Described by international bodies as a rare breed and an embodiment of high level achievements, Shonekan is a Yoruba and a chief in Abeokuta, the home town of the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late chief M.K.O Abiola.
He was the interim head of the Nigerian Government between August 26 and November 17, 1993.

We call on President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Dapo Abiodun to speedily implement an immortalization plan for Shonekan who was a seasoned administrator, a lawyer, and a business man as he remains a massive signpost in the terrain of Nigeria history and it is thus a grievous national loss.

While in office, Shonekan released political prisoners detained by Babangida.
His administration also introduced a bill to repeal three major draconian decrees of the military government.

As the international community, Nigeria and the South Western Nigeria particularly rues in bereavement, it is important to remind our leaders to borrow a leaf from the life of Pa Ernest Shonekan as they will also leave this world someday.

May the soul of the deceased rest in perfect peace and his immediate family be granted the fortitude to bear the loss. (Amen).

Education / Nans Queries ₦305 Billion Inec Budget by NANSogun: 10:09pm On Dec 26, 2021
NANS QUERIES ₦305 BILLION INEC BUDGET

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to undertake a downward review of its proposed N305 billion budget for the conduct of 2023 general elections in view of the prevailing economic situation in the country.

The student body has also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to write his name in gold by signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law.

Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, had last week presented a budget of N305 billion to the National Assembly, for the 2023 general elections.

But the Southwest (Zone D) Coordinator of NANS, Comrade Adegboye Olatunji, said the N305 billion requested by the electoral umpire apart from its N40 billion annual budget was too high and be reviewed downward.

Olatunji in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja said the precarious economic climate in Nigeria requires prudence in the management of resources in view of competing demands.

He said: “The function of the government in preparation for the general election is the timely provision of adequate funding for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“This is needed so as to fast-track the procurement and printing of sensitive and non-sensitive materials, importation of necessary equipment, as well as organize befitting remuneration for the workforce, among other things.

“Having said this, it will be inimical and tantamount to delusion and self-deception if we fail to appreciate the precarious economic climate of the nation.

PRESS RELEASE.

NANS/SW/PR/21/005

November 24, 2021.

NANS SOUTHWEST VISITS OSUN CP, CONFIRMS THE DETENTION OF HILTON HOTEL OWNER.

Prior to our emergence as the leadership of NANS SOUTHWEST, the unfortunate demise of Timothy Adegoke, a Masters student of Obafemi Awolowo University have been making rounds on the internet and media with several accusations and counter-accusations flying from different angles.

Following our victory at the polls, we affirmed our utmost commitment and dedication to the welfare of Nigerian students across the Southwest.

We swung into action immediately by organizing a press conference to State affirmatively on position on the ongoing investigation by the Nigerian Police Force.

Earlier today, the leadership of NANS Southwest alongside the Students Union representatives of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU); Comrade Ajayi Oluwafemi Sunday (FM CASTRO), Chairman Electoral Committee, Obafemi Awolowo University paid a working visit to Osun State Commissioner of Police; CP Olawale Olokode.

This visit afforded us the opportunity to engage the Nigeria Police Force directly and assess the level of investigatory work done so far.

At the end of the meeting, On our demand, we were allowed to see Dr. Ramon Adedoyin, owner of Hilton Hotel and Suites who is currently detained at the Police Headquarters, Osun State.

On this note, we want to affirm that Dr. Ramon Adedoyin is being held in line with the police’s normal standard, contrary to a rumor circulating on Social Media that he is enjoying VIP treatment in the cell.

Among other things, the police is still waiting for the postmortem result which will largely influence the direction of the investigation.

As much as we are all pained, we urge the media and general public to refrain from sensationalism and stick with just the facts.

We must state this emphatically and giving a strict warning that no one should commercialize the demise of the victim at all levels. The Zonal leadership is undoubtedly capable to discharge duties appropriately to all quarters.

As we keep solidarizing with OAU community and the deceased’s family, we assure that we shall continue to do everything within our capacity to ensure that justice is served.

May the soul of the deceased rest in perfect peace.

Education / Being The Communique Of The Nans South West (zone D) Covention 2021 by NANSogun: 7:48pm On Nov 22, 2021
BEING THE COMMUNIQUE OF THE NANS ZONE D COVENTION HELD AT THE FEDERAL COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE, AKURE ON SATURDAY 20TH OF NOVEMBER 2021.

The unity convention duly planned by the joint CPC leadership nominated by the two outgoing factions in the zone started properly with the arrival of senators and other students at around 1PM at the venue of the convention.
The accreditation of SUG Presidents (Senators) who are delegate of the eligible institutions to vote in the election hall started with the accreditation of senators from Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos
and Osun respectively while waiting for only Ekiti state to show up.

It is no longer a news that institutions from the six states of the South West Zone are only eligible to participate in this election. But the CPC ensured that the accreditation process was on pend to wait for the arrival of Ekiti senators so as to give everyone a fair chance at the election.
At about 3PM, about fifteen buses led by the National President of NANS, Com Sunday Asefon drove in with armed persons. The arrival of these persons led to chaos and chasing of students peacefully converging at the election venue. While the police couldn’t contain the excesses of these people brought by the NANS President, everyone had to run for their dear lives except for the senators and CPC members who were already inside the hall and on campus as these hoodlums couldn’t gain access into the locked campus gate. The intention of the President was obvious that he wanted to violently chase away students and other observers in order to intimidate people and influence the election.

Fortunately, it takes only about an hour for the security agencies to deploy their tactical anti-cultist units to the venue. These security agencies were therefore able to chase away all security threats at the venue and allowing students with ID Card and no other item into the convention venue. At this point, Com Asefon and his boys could not return to the venue apparently because of the fear of being arrested by the security. It is also believed that the delegates from Ekiti were in the convoy of the NANS President obviously because he’s from Ekiti state.

After the expectation by the CPC that the NANS President will come back peacefully didn’t become a reality, by 4:30PM the election proper started under the coordination of the two CPC Chairmen, Com Ojo Raymond and Adewale Samson who were assisted by their CPC members.

After an address of the senators by the CPC on the process of the election, the nomination for the Convention chairman to oversee the election process was conducted following a motion for commencement by the President of Federal Poly of Agriculture.
The President of TASCE (Ogun) nominated Com Soneye Abdul-Azeez LAS as the convention chairman while it was seconded by the President of FECA (Ondo). Afolabi Olumide of FUTA was equally nominated as the Chairman by the President of FUTA and seconded by President of FECA. An election was conducted in which Comr LAS won and was declared the Convention Chairman.

The Convention Chairman started his address by dissolving the two factional zonal leadership as well as the joint CPC led by Comr Kowe Odunayo and Comr Kappo Samuel as well as Com Ojo Raymond and Comr Adewale Samson respectively. And the election commenced proper. Comr BabTee of Ondo was nominated and approved as the Convention Clerk while the Convention chairman nominated the dissolved CPC co-chairmen as members of the electoral committee.
The President of FCA (Ibadan) nominated Com Alao John as the Deputy Cordinator and seconded by President of Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology(Oyo). In the absence of no other nominations, Comr Alao John was declared the deputy Cordinator elect.
The President of ICT Poly (Itori) nominated Comr Adegboye Olatunji Teejay as coordinated and was seconded by the President of Oyo Special. The President of FECA (Ondo) nominated Comr Olupona Segun DoMercy and seconded by senator of UNIMED (Ondo). Com Awoyinfa Opeoluwa Opiano was equally nominated but he openly stated that he stepped down for Com Teejay. However, Comr Domercy was absent and all senators unanimously agreed that aspirants should be voted for in absentia. Hence, Com Adegboye Olatunji Teejay was unanimously voted for as the Cordinator and announced the Zone D Cordinator elect by the Convention Chairman.
The President of Federal College of Forestry (Ibadan) nominated Comr Awoyinfa Opeoluwa Opiano for the PRO and was seconded by President of UNIMED (Ondo). Com Damola was equally nominated by the President of FECA(Akure). An election was conducted in which Com Opiano won and was declared the PRO elect.

However, the President of OGITECH (Ogun) raised an observation that the day was getting too dark and the election into other offices should be decided at the next senate meeting of the zone. This observation received a unanimous support from all other senators present. Hence, the convention Chairman declared the election into all other offices suspended till the next senate meeting.

We acknowledge the presence of all observers, in particular the CPC co-chairmen, Comr Adewale Samson and Ojo Raymond who were present at the convention from the beginning till the end of the election, the NANS JCC Chairmen of Ondo, Ogun, Oyo and Lagos, past and present NANS leaders namely Com Gambo Muhammed (Ex Senate President), Com Yusuf Lawal (Ex Cordinator Zone A), Com Usman Babacankia (Ex Cordinator Zone A), Com Umar Farouk Faqi (Ex Cordinator Zone A) and several other stakeholders.

SIGNED;

COMRADE SONEYE ABDUL-AZEEZ LEKAN LAS (COVENTION CHAIRMAN)
