Our politics and national life is so divided along ethnic lines, it's an absolute disgrace. I have read that before colonial invasion, there was NO SUCH THING as ''I am Igbo'', ''You are Yoruba'', ''I am Hausa''. These language blocs we call ''tribes'' were deliberately created as IDENTITY GROUPS by the EUROPEAN COLONIZERS as a Divide and Rule tactic in Africa. Prior to their invasion, we had those languages of course, but people who spoke them NEVER IDENTIFIED AS A SINGLE GROUP. Why? Because language spoken was changeable at anytime depending on migration. There was no ''lingua franca'' across the territory we now call Nigeria. If you were Igbo and decided to migrate with your family to another land, eg Ijebu or Oyo, perhaps for better access to water, arable land or whatever, or to escape a conflict, you would arrive there and be COMPELLED by necessity to learn the Yoruba language. FAST. Within a generation or two, your entire family has become ''Yoruba people'' as you would term them today. IN FACT I CAN GUARANTEE YOU 100% that there are millions of you walking around today who call yourselves ''Igbo'' but actually descended from Yoruba, Efik, Edo and even Hausa or Fulani speaking migrants that arrived your village maybe 300 years ago. 400 years ago. Even as early as 200 years ago in some cases. Likewise, many ''Yoruba people'' today, if you did an Ancestry DNA test on them, their results will show their ancestors migrated from ''Igboland'' or even from Ghana or Togo 200 years or 500 years ago. BEFORE COLONIAL INVASION, our people based their identity on their traceable LINEAGE, city, region, or village, NOT the language they spoke. It was the BRITISH INVADERS who came in and saw a more or less UNIFIED PEOPLE who traded among themselves, intermarried etc etc, and decided to DIVIDE them into competing large language blocs they called ''tribes'', so as to engender rivalry and competition for colonial favours among the ''tribes'' instead of the people rising in unity to drive out the thieving colonial invaders. So, by perpetuating this nonsensical ''tribalism'', you are simply a colonial puppet, led by the nose by greedy European imperialists. When will you wake up? One more thing.
