The National Mosque and the National Christian Center are not owned, neither were they built by government.

President Shehu Shagari began putting up structures in Abuja in the early 1980s and it looked like he wanted to move the Federal Government to Abuja before the end of his tenure.

Prominent Muslims got together and decided that they needed to have a central worship center in Abuja. They created a fund raising committee to raise money for the project. The committee was chaired by Sir Siddiq Abubakar, who was the Sultan of Sokoto at the time. Money was raised and AIM Consult was selected as the contractor to design the mosque. The National Mosque, Abuja was thus opened in 1984.


Christians began talking about building a National Christian Center in Abuja. They got a piece of land opposite the National Mosque in 1989, but the project was abandoned for many years.

They began talking about reviving the project in 1999 and fund raising began.

The National Christian Center was opened in 2005 and the ceremony coincided with Nigeria's independence anniversary.

I remember the ceremony because President Obasanjo said something that had been on my mind for a while.

Nigeria built a lot of structures during the oil boom in the 1970s. However, by the 1990s, the country did not have money to maintain them properly. I remember that the central air condition at the National Theater in Lagos was not working.

At the opening of the National Christian Center, President Obasanjo told the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that they needed to plan for money for maintenance. He said, for example, what would happen if the air condition system had a fault? He asked if they would have the money to repair it.

The altar/stage at the National Christian Center rotates and President Obasanjo asked CAN how they would be able to afford to fix it if it developed a fault.

These structures were not built by government.

What resource does Lagos have?

Some would say it was the former federal capital. What was the state of Lagos when it was a federal capital that made them move it to Abuja?

Those days, you'd see heaps of refuse on road medians. Indiscriminate burning of refuse. Disorganized transportation system. Poor school infrastructure and a consistent lack of any plan.

In 2002, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) was set up. We knew who was in power then. The mandate of LAMATA was to reform the transport system in Lagos state. That agency even went as far as hiring transport experts from the UK to run it. 22 years on, no one can boast that LAMATA failed.

When they started dividing the road medians in Lagos, we all complained and wondered why someone would be so senseless to divide our roads when there was transport problems. When the first blue BRT bus rolled in and blared the horns on that corridor, people started leaving their cars at home to enjoy the BRT facility. LAGBUS also started running and the transportation landscape in Lagos changed.

In 2006, Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) was founded. The mandate was simple: regulate outdoor advertizing in Lagos. You see those backlit billboards in Lagos? LASAA gets a lot of money. If you go to Times Square in New York City, you'd find such lighted billboards. We know who was in charge of Lagos when it was set up.

The first medical emergency service in Nigeria, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), was founded in 2001. Who was in power then?

Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) properly started addressing waste management in Lagos state during someone's administration. They employed thousands.

One could go on and on. The point is to remind the young ones who do not know the history of how Lagos evolved, but want to rewrite it from their reservoir of ignorance and hate. The question is whether Lagos had the natural resources then. They had the natural resource every country needs: brains.

The Lagos success is a case of visioning and planning.

Therefore, other states need to do something. Gather yourselves, including the opposition, and come up with a development agenda for your state for 20 years. Irrespective of who comes into power, FOLLOW the template. Put the people first. Government is to cater for the people. Look at the lofty things Donald Duke did for his people and how his vision was not continued. Today, Calabar would have been the destination for international holiday makers and fun seekers.

These main streets, which ran at right angles to each other, had underground drainage made of a sunken impluvium with an outlet to carry away storm water. Many narrower side and intersecting streets extended off them....

“Houses are built alongside the streets in good order, the one close to the other,” writes the 17th-century Dutch visitor Olfert Dapper. “Adorned with gables and steps … they are usually broad with long galleries inside, especially so in the case of the houses of the nobility, and divided into many rooms which are separated by walls made of red clay, very well erected.”

Dapper adds that wealthy residents kept these walls “as shiny and smooth by washing and rubbing as any wall in Holland can be made with chalk, and they are like mirrors. Now, however, the great Benin City is lost to history. Its decline began in the 15th century, sparked by internal conflicts linked to the increasing European intrusion and slavery trade at the borders of the Benin empire.....
