Politics › Obidient Rigging Allegation: Yunusa Tanko Demands ₦5 Billion From Nma Ukpabi by naptu2(op): 1:08pm On Oct 05 |
BREAKING: Ex-Obidient Movement Coordinator Yunusa Tanko Demands N5bn From Fellow Obidient Supporter Over Claims He Stole NDC Ticket For Son
Former National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement and current Political Adviser, Northern Nigeria, to the presidential candidate of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, Dr Yunusa Tanko, has demanded ₦5 billion in damages from fellow Obi supporter Nmaa Ukpabi over alleged defamatory publications concerning the disputed NDC House of Assembly ticket in Kaduna State.
Tanko, through his lawyers, V-C Ottaokpukpu & Associates, Umuchukwu Chambers, issued a pre-action notice dated September 9, 2026, accusing Ukpabi of making defamatory and injurious statements about him on social media platforms and WhatsApp groups.
The dispute is linked to the controversy surrounding the NDC primary election for Kawo Constituency in Kaduna State, where Tanko's son, Yunusa Mohammed Salisu, was declared the party's candidate despite another aspirant, Rakiya Baba Mohammed, being declared winner at the primary.
SaharaReporters had earlier reported that Rakiya allegedly won the direct primary held on May 29/30, 2026, after polling 225 votes against Salisu's 132 votes.
The electoral officer's report seen by SaharaReporters had declared Rakiya the winner and stated that the primary was successfully and peacefully conducted.
However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) later published Salisu as the NDC candidate for the constituency, prompting Rakiya to challenge the development.
The controversy has since triggered accusations of manipulation and alleged interference in the party's internal process.
In the latest development, Tanko's lawyers accused Ukpabi of repeatedly publishing statements they described as defamatory and malicious, including allegations that Tanko manipulated the primary election to secure the ticket for his son.
The letter said Ukpabi had accused Tanko of being a “mandate thief orchestrator” and alleged that he was responsible for replacing Rakiya's name with that of his son.
The lawyers quoted Ukpabi as writing: “Dr. Tanko, the mandate thief orchestrator.”
“You are a huge disappointment to the Obidient movement world-wide.”
“You are corrupt and do not deserve to be associated with the Obidient movement.”
“What you have taught your son in 2026 is to be a mandate thief.”
“It is only a hardened mandate thief professional that would birth a generation of mandate thieves.”
Ukpabi also allegedly wrote: “You stole Rakiya's mandate successfully for your son Salisu last Friday July 31st 2026 and Rakiya's name was removed from the list while Salisu your son's name was uploaded on the list.”
She further described Tanko's son as a “mandate thief” and alleged that Tanko had attempted to influence political figures to pressure Rakiya.
The lawyers said the publications were shared on several WhatsApp groups, including the All Inclusive Obidient Movement-General, Obidient Movement Lagos State, OK-Movement Kaduna State, All-Inclusive Obidient National Coordinators and All-Inclusive Obidient Leaders in NDC Coalition.
They said the alleged publications portrayed Tanko as “a thief, corrupt, fraudulent, wicked, shameless, deceitful, untrustworthy and duplicitous.”
The lawyers also accused Ukpabi of alleging that their client “manipulated the primary election process and corruptly ensured that Rakiya was short changed of her victory” and gave the ticket to his son.
According to the legal notice, the statements were circulated through WhatsApp groups, Facebook, X and other social media platforms.
The lawyers said the publications portrayed their client as a thief, corrupt person and someone who fraudulently manipulated the NDC primary election in favour of his son.
They rejected the allegations, arguing that Tanko's reputation had been built over years of public service and political activism.
The lawyers said their client had been associated with “unity, Youth and grassroots Participation, stronger democratic institutions inter alia”, while his commitment to the rule of law and protection of human rights had never been questioned.
“Our client have (sic) therefore carefully considered the words used by you and made in utmost bad faith contained in your letter and several publications across various social media platforms and unable to fathom and decipher any scintilla and iota of truth in your baseless accusations that may warrant such a defamatory and injurious attack on his character and hard-earned reputation,” the lawyers said.
They further alleged that the disputed publication of June 30, 2026, was not an isolated incident.
“It is quite unfortunate to note that apart from your defamatory message of 30th June 2026, you had on several occasions made further similar malicious and injurious publications against our client which is continuing almost on daily basis now in your aforesaid social media accounts and various WhatsApp groups with wide coverage,” the lawyers said.
The legal notice accused Ukpabi's publications of causing damage to Tanko's reputation and demanded that the alleged defamatory materials be immediately removed.
The legal notice demanded that Ukpabi retract the alleged defamatory statements and publish apologies on two private television stations and the Nigerian Television Authority, as well as two private radio stations and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.
The lawyers also demanded ₦5 billion in damages.
The notice warned that failure to comply within 24 hours would lead to legal action for defamation and alleged violation of Tanko's constitutional rights.
It also said Tanko reserved the right to approach security agencies over what his lawyers described as conduct “perceived as cyberstalking and injurious to our client's reputation.”
Among the demands was that Ukpabi remove “all the publications in its entirety” from WhatsApp groups and social media platforms, including shared individual and group accounts, in order to prevent further damage to Tanko's reputation.
The lawyers also demanded a public apology and retraction of the alleged defamatory statements.
They said Ukpabi must publish an apology and retract the statements in at least two national newspapers within 24 hours of receiving the notice, with the choice of newspapers to be approved by Tanko or his lawyers.
The lawyers further demanded that Ukpabi publish a full retraction and unreserved apology in at least two international newspapers within the same 24-hour period.
The notice stated that the choice of the international newspapers must also be approved by Tanko or his solicitors before publication.
The demand comes amid the continuing controversy over the NDC's Kawo Constituency ticket and allegations by some supporters that the party's internal process was manipulated.
Tanko had previously denied allegations that he hijacked the ticket for his son.
Following the controversy, NDC spokesman Osa Director had told SaharaReporters that the party's appeals committee could overturn the outcome of a primary where an appeal was found to have merit, although he said he could not confirm the details of what happened in the Kawo case.
Tanko's son, Salisu, was among the contestants for the ticket, while Rakiya Baba Mohammed was declared the winner in the primary election according to the electoral officer's report.
Rakiya subsequently challenged her removal from the party's candidate list.
The controversy has continued even as Tanko moved into a new political role following his appointment as Peter Obi's Political Adviser for Northern Nigeria.
Tanko recently accepted the appointment, while Dr Moses Paul, popularly known as Dr Mo, succeeded him as National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement.
The new role requires Tanko to focus on political activities and engagement across Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tanko's lawyers, however, said the allegations made against him were baseless and amounted to an attack on his character and hard-earned reputation.
The notice gives Ukpabi 24 hours to remove the publications, issue the demanded retractions and apologies, failing which Tanko's lawyers said further legal steps would be taken. https://saharareporters.com/2026/10/05/breaking-ex-obidient-movement-coordinator-yunusa-tanko-demands-n5bn-fellow-obidient

Yoi can't possibly understand, even if they open ypur head and drop it in. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN COME AND SEE ANOTHER ONE O! THIS ONE SAID THAT I SUPPORT PETER OBI!psalmsjob: The government is an APGA controlled government not a traditional title holder so why shouldn't the state government campaign for the interest of APGA.
The people of Anambra voted for APGA and that's why Soludo is governor but just like they said people who are disloyal to their home cannot defend other mans home. It is hard for people like you who support Peter Obi to understand what that means and how far that goes and that's why you can be supporting a disloyal man who lacks integrity because you are just like him. |

This is going too far. This type of thing should not be posted on the official Twitter page of the state government.
It would have been OK if it was posted on the APGA page or the page of the governor, or one of the governor's aides, but it shouldn't be on the official page of the state government. |

WHY DID SO MANY JOURNALISTS WRITE THE NAME MFM?
This post is for those that genuinely do not know. It is not for the trolls.
In the 1970s and 1980s there was a popular electronics company called Goldstar. It made television sets, radios, VCRs, etc.
Goldstar merged with Lucky Chemicals in the late 1980s and early 1990s and the name became Lucky Goldstar.
The name was changed to LG in 1995.
Now let me ask you, when last did you see anybody refer to LG as Lucky Goldstar?
There are many similar words and I have used quite a few in this post (I didn't expand etc).
The reason why you see so many journalist refer to that club in that way is simply because the name of the club is MFM Queens Basketball Club. It isn't any other name.
It is owned by another organisation with a longer name but the name of the basketball club is MFM Queens.
Anybody that is looking for a longer name should keep searching. |

You can't reach your peak with this kind of attitude. You don't know the people here in nairaland. Is it because it's a faceless forum? YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW ANYTHING YET YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT CORRECTIONS? ALRIGHT TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO CORRECT |

obailala: C'mon, it’s basic writing etiquette to define abbreviations at first use. I know there's a church called MFM but seeing that it was a basketball league, I kept reading through the report unsure if it was the same MFM I knew or if it meant something else. At least 8 out of 10 readers similarly be confused. I WILL NOT "DEFINE" IT! YOU CAN KEEP WAITING TILL ETERNITY FOR ME TO DEFINE OR EVEN EXPAND IT, IT WON'T HAPPENIf you don't know how to use the internet access that you have, then that's your problem. There are 2 articles on this thread about the game and none of the journalists expanded the initials. But you can keep waiting for me. Keep waiting, you hear! Modified. By David Oyekan October 5, 2026
*Bank pledges continued backing for competition
A total of N19.5m was paid out in team and individual prize money at the finale of the 2026 NBBF/Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League in Lagos on Saturday, as MFM beat First Bank 66-64 after overtime to win the title.
MFM, who claimed their third title in four years after surviving a late scare from record winners First Bank, took home N7.5m. First Bank collected N5m as runners-up. Nigeria Customs won the N3m bronze prize after beating ASO SKY Queens 51-38 in the third-place match earlier on Saturday.
The three team prizes total N15.5m. Individual awards added N4m.
MFM’s Ioumabo Pius, the Most Valuable Player, received N2m in total. Zenith Bank gave her N500,000 for the award and a further N500,000 for making the Tournament Top 5. Dam Foundations and Xejet added N500,000 each.
The other Top 5 players, each paid N500,000 by Zenith Bank, were Favour Anari (ASO SKY Queens), Nwaado Hemban (MFM), Nkem Akaraiwe (Customs) and Marilyn Ofidibe (First Bank).
Zenith Bank Group Managing Director/CEO Dame Adaora Umeoji was represented at the final by executive director Adamu Lawani. He described all the teams as winners and said the bank would keep backing the league, which it has sponsored for 20 years. “All of you already inspire every young girl watching from the stands tonight,” Lawani said. “Zenith Bank remain committed to the game, we’ll be here next season and the seasons after. Once again, congratulations to all of us.
“ To the champions (MFM), you earned this title with discipline and hard work. Congratulations to the runner up (First Bank), you tested the champion to the end, hold your head very high. We will celebrate together.”
MFM captain Okoh Ukamaka thanked the club’s General Overseer, Dr. Daniel Olukoya, and his wife for backing the team.
“Their support means so much to us. They continue to believe in us and provide the encouragement and support we need to compete at this level,” she said.
She also praised the coaching staff and team unity. “This team is like a family. We trust one another, we work for one another and we never give up,” Ukamaka said.

First Bank women's basketball club has been so successful that many Nigerians that were born abroad, like Mfon Udoka, Rena Wakama (the current coach of D'Tigress) and Dr Sarah Ogoke, have played for them. They have won the African Women's Basketball Cup many times and they have also won silver and bronze in the competition.
First Bank won the African Women's Basketball Cup/League in 2003 and 2009, they came second in 2011, third in 1999, 2005, 2006 and 2008 and fourth in 2010.
First Bank are not the only Nigerian team to perform well in the competition. Bini Queens came fourth in 1987 and First Deep Water came third in 2011 and fourth in 2013.
